ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Phil Hansen - Multimedia artist
Taking a cue from his own artistic journey, Phil Hansen challenges us to spark our creativity by thinking inside the box.

Why you should listen

As an art student, Phil Hansen’s intense style of pointillism led to a tremor in his hand and a diagnosis of nerve damage. Devastated, he dropped out and lost his way ... until a neurologist suggested he “embrace the shake.” That piece of advice tweaked Hansen’s point of view and sent him on a quest to invent different approaches to making art by embracing personal and universal limitations.

Hansen challenged himself to create art using unconventional materials (dandelion puffs, matches, live worms, hamburger grease) and canvases (a stack of Satrbucks cups, his torso, bananas). The resulting time-lapse videos of his creative processes are his meta-art, showing that art is action, not just results. Through an integrated view of what sparks creativity, Hansen has devoted himself to teaching others the approaches to creativity that have changed both his outlook and his artistic endeavors. You can read more in his 2012 book, Tattoo a Banana.

Hansen has just started a new project via Kickstarter, inviting people to share their stories of overcoming limitations with him. Anyone who calls him at 651-321-4996 and tells him their story will become a part of the work, the creation of which is watchable on a live feed

00:47
and this progressively逐步 made制作 the shake worse更差,
13

2315
00:50
so I'd hold保持 the pen钢笔 tighter更紧 still.
14

2272
00:52
And this became成为 a vicious恶毒 cycle周期 that ended结束 up

01:14
And he actually其实 took one look at my squiggly弯弯曲曲 line线,
23

2729
01:17
and said, "Well, why don't you just embrace拥抱 the shake?"
24

01:20
So I did. I went home, I grabbed抓起 a pencil铅笔,

01:23
and I just started开始 letting出租 my hand shake and shake.
26

1908
01:25
I was making制造 all these scribble pictures图片.
27
73450

01:27
And even though虽然 it wasn't the kind of art艺术

01:33
And more importantly重要的, once一旦 I embraced拥抱 the shake,

01:35
I realized实现 I could still make art艺术.
31

2375
01:37
I just had to find a different不同 approach途径
32
85884

01:39
to making制造 the art艺术 that I wanted.
33
87154
2353
01:41
Now, I still enjoyed享受 the fragmentation碎片 of pointillism点画,

01:44
seeing眼看 these little tiny dots come together一起

01:48
So I began开始 experimenting试验 with other ways方法 to fragment分段 images图片
37
96157
2951
01:51
where the shake wouldn't不会 affect影响 the work,
38
99108
2178
01:53
like dipping浸渍 my feet in paint涂料 and walking步行 on a canvas帆布,
39
101286
4477
01:57
or, in a 3D structure结构体 consisting of two-by-fours两个由四肢着地,

41
109461
5463
02:06
I discovered发现 that, if I worked工作 on a larger scale规模 and with bigger materials物料,
42
114924
3344
02:10
my hand really wouldn't不会 hurt伤害,
43
118268
2408
02:12
and after having gone走了 from a single approach途径 to art艺术,
44
120676
3600
02:16
I ended结束 up having an approach途径 to creativity创造力
45
124276
2251
02:18
that completely全然 changed my artistic艺术的 horizons视野.
46
126527
3701
02:22
This was the first time I'd encountered遇到 this idea理念
47
130228
1920
02:24
that embracing拥抱 a limitation局限性 could actually其实 drive驾驶 creativity创造力.
48
132148
5472
02:29
At the time, I was finishing精加工 up school学校,
49
137620
2416
02:32
and I was so excited兴奋 to get a real真实 job工作 and finally最后 afford给予 new art艺术 supplies耗材.
50
140036
3608
02:35
I had this horrible可怕 little set of tools工具, and I felt like
51
143644
3761
02:39
I could do so much more with the supplies耗材
52
147405
2110
02:41
I thought an artist艺术家 was supposed应该 to have.
53
149515
2532
02:44
I actually其实 didn't even have a regular定期 pair of scissors剪刀.
54
152047
2205
02:46
I was using运用 these metal金属 shears until直到 I stole偷了 a pair
55
154252
2512
02:48
from the office办公室 that I worked工作 at.
56
156764
2248
02:51
So I got out of school学校, I got a job工作, I got a paycheck薪水,
57
159012
2932
02:53
I got myself to the art艺术 store商店,
58
161944
1654
02:55
and I just went nuts坚果 buying购买 supplies耗材.
59
163598
3114
02:58
And then when I got home, I satSAT down
60
166712
1628
03:00
and I set myself to task任务 to really try to create创建 something
61
168340
3108
03:03
just completely全然 outside of the box.
62
171448
2764
03:06
But I satSAT there for hours小时, and nothing came来了 to mind心神.
63
174212
4424
03:10
The same相同 thing the next下一个 day, and then the next下一个,
64
178636
2547
03:13
quickly很快 slipping滑倒 into a creative创作的 slump暴跌.
65
181183
3689
03:16
And I was in a dark黑暗 place地点 for a long time, unable无法 to create创建.
66
184872
4248
03:21
And it didn't make any sense, because I was finally最后 able能够
67
189120
2574
03:23
to support支持 my art艺术, and yet然而 I was creatively创造性 blank空白.
68
191694
4374
03:28
But as I searched搜索 around in the darkness黑暗,
69
196068
2212
03:30
I realized实现 I was actually其实 paralyzed by all of the choices选择
70
198280
3528
03:33
that I never had before.
71
201808
2568
03:36
And it was then that I thought back to my jittery风声鹤唳 hands.
72
204376
3723
03:40
Embrace拥抱 the shake.
73
208099
2717
03:42
And I realized实现, if I ever wanted my creativity创造力 back,
74
210816
2676
03:45
I had to quit放弃 trying so hard to think outside of the box
75
213492
3764
03:49
and get back into it.
76
217256
2716
03:51
I wondered想知道, could you become成为 more creative创作的, then,
77
219972
2086
03:54
by looking for limitations限制?
78
222058
2898
03:56
What if I could only create创建 with a dollar's美元 worth价值 of supplies耗材?
79
224956
5181
04:02
At this point, I was spending开支 a lot of my evenings晚上 in --
80
230137
2273
04:04
well, I guess猜测 I still spend a lot of my evenings晚上 in Starbucks星巴克
81
232410
2773
04:07
but I know you can ask for an extra额外 cup杯子 if you want one,
82
235183
3208
04:10
so I decided决定 to ask for 50.
83
238391
2393
04:12
Surprisingly出奇, they just handed them right over,
84
240784
1783
04:14
and then with some pencils铅笔 I already已经 had,
85
242567
1988
04:16
I made制作 this project项目 for only 80 cents.
86
244555
3180
04:19
It really became成为 a moment时刻 of clarification澄清 for me
87
247735
2536
04:22
that we need to first be limited有限
88
250271
2880
04:25
in order订购 to become成为 limitless无限.
89
253151
3048
04:28
I took this approach途径 of thinking思维 inside the box
90
256199
2008
04:30
to my canvas帆布, and wondered想知道 what if, instead代替 of
91
258207
1903
04:32
painting绘画 on a canvas帆布, I could only paint涂料 on my chest胸部?
92
260110
3329
04:35
So I painted 30 images图片, one layer at a time,
93
263439
2584
04:38
one on top最佳 of another另一个,
94
266023
1200
04:39
with each picture图片 representing代表 an influence影响 in my life.
95
267223
4500
04:43
Or what if, instead代替 of painting绘画 with a brush,
96
271723
2652
04:46
I could only paint涂料 with karate空手道 chops印章? (Laughter笑声)
97
274375
2752
04:49
So I'd dip my hands in paint
98
277127
1476
04:50
and I just attacked袭击 the canvas帆布,
99
278603
1420
04:52
and I actually其实 hit击中 so hard that I bruised伤痕累累 a joint联合 in my pinkie小指
100
280023
2709
04:54
and it was stuck卡住 straight直行 for a couple一对 of weeks.
101

05:01
Or, what if instead代替 of relying依托 on myself,
103
289027
4205
05:05
I had to rely依靠 on other people
104
293232
1933
05:07
to create创建 the content内容 for the art艺术?
105
295165
2652
05:09
So for six days, I lived生活 in front面前 of a webcam摄像头.
106
297817
2791
05:12
I slept on the floor地板 and I ate takeout取出,
107
300608
2640

05:20
Their stories故事 became成为 the art艺术
110
308236
2452
05:22
as I wrote them onto the revolving旋转 canvas帆布.
111
310688
3512
05:26
(Applause
112
314200
4465
05:30
Or what if instead代替 of making制造 art艺术 to display显示,
113
318665
4496
05:35
I had to destroy破坏 it?
114
323161
2263
05:37
This seemed似乎 like the ultimate最终 limitation局限性,
115
325424
2272
05:39
being存在 an artist艺术家 without art艺术.
116
327696
2492
05:42
This destruction毁坏 idea理念 turned转身 into a yearlong长年的 project项目
117
330188
2548
05:44
that I called Goodbye再见 Art艺术,
118
332736
1353
05:46
where each and every一切 piece of art艺术 had to be destroyed销毁 after its creation创建.
119
334089

05:50
In the beginning开始 of Goodbye再见 Art艺术, I focused重点 on
120
338785
1491
05:52
forced被迫 destruction毁坏, like this image图片 of Jimi吉米 Hendrix亨德里克斯,

05:58
Then I opened打开 it up to creating创建 art艺术 that was destroyed销毁 naturally自然.
124
346974
3189
06:02
I looked看着 for temporary临时 materials物料,
125
350163
2613
06:04
like spitting随地吐痰 out food餐饮 --
126

06:06
(Laughter

4536
06:18
The last iteration迭代 of destruction毁坏
130

06:20
was to try to produce生产 something that didn't actually其实 exist存在 in the first place地点.
131
368822
4043
06:24
So I organized有组织的 candles蜡烛 on a table, I lit发光的 them, and then blew自爆 them out,
132
372865
3343
06:28
then repeated重复 this process处理 over and over with the same相同 set of candles蜡烛,
133
376208
3640
06:31
then assembled组装 the videos视频 into the larger image图片.
134

06:35
So the end结束 image图片 was never visible可见 as a physical物理 whole整个.
