ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Phil Hansen - Multimedia artist
Taking a cue from his own artistic journey, Phil Hansen challenges us to spark our creativity by thinking inside the box.

Why you should listen

As an art student, Phil Hansen’s intense style of pointillism led to a tremor in his hand and a diagnosis of nerve damage. Devastated, he dropped out and lost his way ... until a neurologist suggested he “embrace the shake.” That piece of advice tweaked Hansen’s point of view and sent him on a quest to invent different approaches to making art by embracing personal and universal limitations.

Hansen challenged himself to create art using unconventional materials (dandelion puffs, matches, live worms, hamburger grease) and canvases (a stack of Satrbucks cups, his torso, bananas). The resulting time-lapse videos of his creative processes are his meta-art, showing that art is action, not just results. Through an integrated view of what sparks creativity, Hansen has devoted himself to teaching others the approaches to creativity that have changed both his outlook and his artistic endeavors. You can read more in his 2012 book, Tattoo a Banana.

Hansen has just started a new project via Kickstarter, inviting people to share their stories of overcoming limitations with him. Anyone who calls him at 651-321-4996 and tells him their story will become a part of the work, the creation of which is watchable on a live feed

00:12
So, when I was in art藝術 school學校,
0
876
1789
00:14
I developed發達 a shake in my hand,
1
2665
1419
00:16
and this was the straightest直的 line I could draw.
2
4084
3032
00:19
Now in hindsight事後, it was actually其實 good for some things,
3
7116
2651
00:21
like mixing混合 a can of paint塗料 or shaking發抖 a Polaroid寶麗來,
4
9767
3189
00:24
but at the time this was really doomsday末日.
5
12956
2698
00:27
This was the destruction毀壞 of my dream夢想 of becoming變得 an artist藝術家.
6
15654
3617
00:31
The shake developed發達 out of, really,
7
19271
2370
00:33
a single-minded專一 pursuit追求 of pointillism點畫,
8
21641
1907
00:35
just years年份 of making製造 tiny, tiny dots.
9
23548
2554
00:38
And eventually終於 these dots went from being存在 perfectly完美 round回合
10
26102
3894
00:41
to looking more like tadpoles蝌蚪, because of the shake.
11
29996
3688
00:45
So to compensate補償, I'd hold保持 the pen鋼筆 tighter更緊,
12
33684
2245
00:47
and this progressively逐步 made製作 the shake worse更差,
13
35929
2315
00:50
so I'd hold保持 the pen鋼筆 tighter更緊 still.
14
38244
2272
00:52
And this became成為 a vicious惡毒 cycle週期 that ended結束 up
15
40516
2216
00:54
causing造成 so much pain疼痛 and joint聯合 issues問題,
16
42732
2224
00:56
I had trouble麻煩 holding保持 anything.
17
44956
2216
00:59
And after spending開支 all my life wanting希望 to do art藝術,
18
47172
3385
01:02
I left art藝術 school學校, and then I left art藝術 completely全然.
19
50557
4611
01:07
But after a few少數 years年份, I just couldn't不能 stay away from art藝術,
20
55168
2460
01:09
and I decided決定 to go to a neurologist神經學家 about the shake
21
57628
2292
01:11
and discovered發現 I had permanent常駐 nerve神經 damage損傷.
22
59920
2860
01:14
And he actually其實 took one look at my squiggly彎彎曲曲 line,
23
62780
2729
01:17
and said, "Well, why don't you just embrace擁抱 the shake?"
24
65509
3423
01:20
So I did. I went home, I grabbed抓起 a pencil鉛筆,
25
68932
2610
01:23
and I just started開始 letting出租 my hand shake and shake.
26
71542
1908
01:25
I was making製造 all these scribble pictures圖片.
27
73450
2094
01:27
And even though雖然 it wasn't the kind of art藝術
28
75544
1830
01:29
that I was ultimately最終 passionate多情 about, it felt great.
29
77374
3656
01:33
And more importantly重要的, once一旦 I embraced擁抱 the shake,
30
81030
2479
01:35
I realized實現 I could still make art藝術.
31
83509
2375
01:37
I just had to find a different不同 approach途徑
32
85884
1270
01:39
to making製造 the art藝術 that I wanted.
33
87154
2353
01:41
Now, I still enjoyed享受 the fragmentation碎片 of pointillism點畫,
34
89507
2840
01:44
seeing眼看 these little tiny dots come together一起
35
92347
1829
01:46
to make this unified統一 whole整個.
36
94176
1981
01:48
So I began開始 experimenting試驗 with other ways方法 to fragment分段 images圖片
37
96157
2951
01:51
where the shake wouldn't不會 affect影響 the work,
38
99108
2178
01:53
like dipping浸漬 my feet in paint塗料 and walking步行 on a canvas帆布,
39
101286
4477
01:57
or, in a 3D structure結構體 consisting of two-by-fours兩個由四肢著地,
40
105763
3698
02:01
creating創建 a 2D image圖片 by burning燃燒 it with a blowtorch噴燈.
41
109461
5463
02:06
I discovered發現 that, if I worked工作 on a larger scale規模 and with bigger materials物料,
42
114924
3344
02:10
my hand really wouldn't不會 hurt傷害,
43
118268
2408
02:12
and after having gone走了 from a single approach途徑 to art藝術,
44
120676
3600
02:16
I ended結束 up having an approach途徑 to creativity創造力
45
124276
2251
02:18
that completely全然 changed my artistic藝術的 horizons視野.
46
126527
3701
02:22
This was the first time I'd encountered遇到 this idea理念
47
130228
1920
02:24
that embracing擁抱 a limitation局限性 could actually其實 drive駕駛 creativity創造力.
48
132148
5472
02:29
At the time, I was finishing精加工 up school學校,
49
137620
2416
02:32
and I was so excited興奮 to get a real真實 job工作 and finally最後 afford給予 new art藝術 supplies耗材.
50
140036
3608
02:35
I had this horrible可怕 little set of tools工具, and I felt like
51
143644
3761
02:39
I could do so much more with the supplies耗材
52
147405
2110
02:41
I thought an artist藝術家 was supposed應該 to have.
53
149515
2532
02:44
I actually其實 didn't even have a regular定期 pair of scissors剪刀.
54
152047
2205
02:46
I was using運用 these metal金屬 shears until直到 I stole偷了 a pair
55
154252
2512
02:48
from the office辦公室 that I worked工作 at.
56
156764
2248
02:51
So I got out of school學校, I got a job工作, I got a paycheck薪水,
57
159012
2932
02:53
I got myself to the art藝術 store商店,
58
161944
1654
02:55
and I just went nuts堅果 buying購買 supplies耗材.
59
163598
3114
02:58
And then when I got home, I satSAT down
60
166712
1628
03:00
and I set myself to task任務 to really try to create創建 something
61
168340
3108
03:03
just completely全然 outside of the box.
62
171448
2764
03:06
But I satSAT there for hours小時, and nothing came來了 to mind心神.
63
174212
4424
03:10
The same相同 thing the next下一個 day, and then the next下一個,
64
178636
2547
03:13
quickly很快 slipping滑倒 into a creative創作的 slump暴跌.
65
181183
3689
03:16
And I was in a dark黑暗 place地點 for a long time, unable無法 to create創建.
66
184872
4248
03:21
And it didn't make any sense, because I was finally最後 able能夠
67
189120
2574
03:23
to support支持 my art藝術, and yet然而 I was creatively創造性 blank空白.
68
191694
4374
03:28
But as I searched搜索 around in the darkness黑暗,
69
196068
2212
03:30
I realized實現 I was actually其實 paralyzed by all of the choices選擇
70
198280
3528
03:33
that I never had before.
71
201808
2568
03:36
And it was then that I thought back to my jittery風聲鶴唳 hands.
72
204376
3723
03:40
Embrace擁抱 the shake.
73
208099
2717
03:42
And I realized實現, if I ever wanted my creativity創造力 back,
74
210816
2676
03:45
I had to quit放棄 trying so hard to think outside of the box
75
213492
3764
03:49
and get back into it.
76
217256
2716
03:51
I wondered想知道, could you become成為 more creative創作的, then,
77
219972
2086
03:54
by looking for limitations限制?
78
222058
2898
03:56
What if I could only create創建 with a dollar's美元 worth價值 of supplies耗材?
79
224956
5181
04:02
At this point, I was spending開支 a lot of my evenings晚上 in --
80
230137
2273
04:04
well, I guess猜測 I still spend a lot of my evenings晚上 in Starbucks星巴克
81
232410
2773
04:07
but I know you can ask for an extra額外 cup杯子 if you want one,
82
235183
3208
04:10
so I decided決定 to ask for 50.
83
238391
2393
04:12
Surprisingly出奇, they just handed them right over,
84
240784
1783
04:14
and then with some pencils鉛筆 I already已經 had,
85
242567
1988
04:16
I made製作 this project項目 for only 80 cents.
86
244555
3180
04:19
It really became成為 a moment時刻 of clarification澄清 for me
87
247735
2536
04:22
that we need to first be limited有限
88
250271
2880
04:25
in order訂購 to become成為 limitless無限.
89
253151
3048
04:28
I took this approach途徑 of thinking思維 inside the box
90
256199
2008
04:30
to my canvas帆布, and wondered想知道 what if, instead代替 of
91
258207
1903
04:32
painting繪畫 on a canvas帆布, I could only paint塗料 on my chest胸部?
92
260110
3329
04:35
So I painted 30 images圖片, one layer at a time,
93
263439
2584
04:38
one on top最佳 of another另一個,
94
266023
1200
04:39
with each picture圖片 representing代表 an influence影響 in my life.
95
267223
4500
04:43
Or what if, instead代替 of painting繪畫 with a brush,
96
271723
2652
04:46
I could only paint塗料 with karate空手道 chops印章? (Laughter笑聲)
97
274375
2752
04:49
So I'd dip my hands in paint
98
277127
1476
04:50
and I just attacked襲擊 the canvas帆布,
99
278603
1420
04:52
and I actually其實 hit擊中 so hard that I bruised傷痕累累 a joint聯合 in my pinkie小指
100
280023
2709
04:54
and it was stuck卡住 straight直行 for a couple一對 of weeks.
101
282732
2932
05:01
Or, what if instead代替 of relying依托 on myself,
103
289027
4205
05:05
I had to rely依靠 on other people
104
293232
1933
05:07
to create創建 the content內容 for the art藝術?
105
295165
2652
05:09
So for six days, I lived生活 in front面前 of a webcam攝像頭.
106
297817
2791
05:12
I slept on the floor地板 and I ate takeout取出,
107
300608
2640
05:15
and I asked people to call me and share分享 a story故事 with me
108
303248
2305
05:17
about a life-changing改變生活 moment時刻.
109
305553
2683
05:20
Their stories故事 became成為 the art藝術
110
308236
2452
05:22
as I wrote them onto the revolving旋轉 canvas帆布.
111
310688
3512
05:26
(Applause
112
314200
4465
05:30
Or what if instead代替 of making製造 art藝術 to display顯示,
113
318665
4496
05:35
I had to destroy破壞 it?
114
323161
2263
05:37
This seemed似乎 like the ultimate最終 limitation局限性,
115
325424
2272
05:39
being存在 an artist藝術家 without art藝術.
116
327696
2492
05:42
This destruction毀壞 idea理念 turned轉身 into a yearlong長年的 project項目
117
330188
2548
05:44
that I called Goodbye再見 Art藝術,
118
332736
1353
05:46
where each and every一切 piece of art藝術 had to be destroyed銷毀 after its creation創建.
119
334089
4696
05:50
In the beginning開始 of Goodbye再見 Art藝術, I focused重點 on
120
338785
1491
05:52
forced被迫 destruction毀壞, like this image圖片 of Jimi吉米 Hendrix亨德里克斯,
121
340276
2727
(Jimi Hendrix)
05:55
made製作 with over 7,000 matches火柴.
122
343003
2805
05:57
(Laughter
123
345808
1166
05:58
Then I opened打開 it up to creating創建 art藝術 that was destroyed銷毀 naturally自然.
124
346974
3189
06:02
I looked看著 for temporary臨時 materials物料,
125
350163
2613
06:04
like spitting隨地吐痰 out food餐飲 --
126
352776
2174
06:06

06:14
and even frozen凍結的 wine紅酒.
129
362225
4536
06:18
The last iteration迭代 of destruction毀壞
130
366761
2061
06:20
was to try to produce生產 something that didn't actually其實 exist存在 in the first place地點.
131
368822
4043
06:24
So I organized有組織的 candles蠟燭 on a table, I lit發光的 them, and then blew自爆 them out,
132
372865
3343
06:28
then repeated重複 this process處理 over and over with the same相同 set of candles蠟燭,
133
376208
3640
06:31
then assembled組裝 the videos視頻 into the larger image圖片.
134
379848
3913
06:35
So the end結束 image圖片 was never visible可見 as a physical物理 whole整個.
