ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Chance Coughenour - Digital archaeologist
Chance Coughenour is recreating heritage and culture that's been lost throughout the world.

Why you should listen

Chance Coughenour enjoys the innovations made possible by uniting science and archaeological research, which was part of the inspiration in the founding of Rekrei. His previous work on a EU-funded project connected him with Matthew Vincent, an archaeologist and web developer, who together launched Rekrei (formally Project Mosul) on March 8 of 2015 after witnessing the destruction of heritage in northern Iraq. Their open-source, volunteer initiative strives for the digital reconstruction of lost heritage using crowdsourced images and photogrammetry, the process of using 2D images to create 3D models.

From the start, Rekrei aimed to crowdsource the virtual reconstruction of the destroyed objects in the Mosul Cultural Museum and eventually release a virtual museum to digitally preserve its memory. This has already been accomplished thanks to the Economist Media Lab. The project has also expanded globally and continues to increase its activities thanks to our growing collaboration with public and private organizations, all of which has been achieved without any funding resources to date. The key ingredient to Rekrei is the online platform, which provides a simple user interface for identifying locations of destroyed heritage, uploading and sorting images, and a 3D gallery of completed reconstructions.

Coughenour has worked on research projects throughout Europe and the Americas. One of which is demonstrated in the documentary Scanning the End. He is a PhD candidate at the Institute for Photogrammetry at the University of Stuttgart. Coughenour joined Google Arts & Culture where he coordinates cultural heritage preservation efforts on a global scale. He's responsible for organizing partnerships and leading projects which employ emerging technology for cultural heritage documentation, dissemination and education.

03:01
When Matthew馬修 Vincent文森特 and I saw this video視頻,
47
169976
2861
03:04
we were shocked吃驚.
48
172861
1268
03:07
Since以來 we are archaeologists考古學家
03:10
for digital數字 preservation保存,
50
178511
1790
03:12
an idea理念 sprung彈性 to mind心神.
51
180325
1559
03:14
Maybe we can crowdsource眾包 the images圖片
that were taken採取 of these artifacts文物
52
182502
4813
03:19
before they were destroyed銷毀,
53
187339
1815
03:21
to create創建 digital數字 reconstructions重建.
54
189178
1943
03:23
If we can do that,
55
191765
1150
03:24
maybe we can put them
into a virtual虛擬 museum博物館
56
192939
2091
03:27
to tell that story故事.
57
195054
1234
03:32
And so two weeks after we saw this video
58
200030
3504
03:35
we started開始 the project項目
03:40
Remember記得 the pictures圖片 of the statue雕像
I showed顯示 you before?
60
208328
2773
03:43
This is actually其實 the crowdsourced眾包
reconstruction重建 of it
61
211471
4377
03:47
before it was destroyed銷毀.
62
215872
1605
03:50
Now, many許多 of you may可能 be wondering想知道,
63
218776
2123
03:52
how exactly究竟 does this work?
64
220923
1738
03:54
Well, the key to this technology技術
is called photogrammetry攝影,
65
222966
3375
03:58
and it was invented發明 here, in Germany德國.
66
226365
2456
04:01
It is the technology技術 that allows允許 us
to use two-dimensional二維 images圖片
67
229890
3406
04:05
taken採取 of the same相同 object目的
from different不同 angles
68
233320
2949
04:08
to create創建 a 3D model模型.
69
236293
1395
04:11
I know you may可能 be thinking思維
this sounds聲音 like magic魔法 -- but it's not.
70
239269
4199
04:15
Let me show顯示 you how it works作品.
71
243492
1531
04:17
Here are two crowdsourced眾包 images圖片
of the same相同 statue雕像.
72
245047
2771
04:20
What the computer電腦 can do
73
248928
1395
04:22
is it can detect檢測 similar類似 features特徵
between之間 the photographs照片 --
74
250347
4215
04:26
similar類似 features特徵 of the object目的.
75
254586
2033
04:29
Then, by using運用 multiple photos相片,
76
257569
2976
04:32
in this case案件, it can begin開始
to reconstruct重建 the object目的 in 3D.
77
260569
3728
04:36
In this case案件,
78
264815
1150
04:37
you have the position位置 of the cameras相機
when each image圖片 was taken採取,
79
265989
3432
04:41
shown顯示 in blue藍色.
80
269445
1178
04:44
Now, this is a partial局部
reconstruction重建, I admit承認,
81
272282
3414
04:47
but why would I say partial局部?
82
275720
1592
04:49
Well, simply只是 because the statue雕像
was positioned定位的 against反對 a wall.
83
277617
4679
04:54
We don't have photographs照片
taken採取 of it from the back.
84
282871
2603
04:58
If I wanted to complete完成 a full充分
digital數字 reconstruction重建 of this statue雕像,
85
286339
4952
05:03
I would need a proper正確 camera相機,
86
291315
1709
05:06
but we simply只是 can't do that
with crowdsourced眾包 images圖片.
88
294817
2490
05:10
Think about it:
89
298149
1150
05:11
How many許多 of you, when you visit訪問 a museum博物館,
90
299323
2233
05:13
take photographs照片
of all parts部分 of the statue雕像,
91
301580
2241
05:15
even the back side of it?
92
303845
1465
05:18
Well, maybe if some of you find
05:22
I guess
94
310027
1151
05:23
(Laughter
95
311202
1484
05:25
But the thing is,
96
313168
1489
05:26
if we can find more images圖片 of this object目的,
97
314681
3140
05:29
we can improve提高 the 3D model模型.
98
317845
1624
05:33
When we started開始 the project項目,
99
321133
2174
05:35
we started開始 it with
the Mosul摩蘇爾 Museum博物館 in mind心神.
100
323331
2149
05:37
We figured想通 we may可能 get a few少數 images圖片,
101
325504
1667
05:39
some people interested有興趣,
102
327195
1246
05:40
make one or two virtual虛擬 reconstructions重建,
103
328465
2479
05:42
but we had no idea理念 that we had sparked引發
something that would grow增長 so quickly很快.
104
330968
4759
05:48
Before we knew知道 it,
105
336276
1553
05:49
we realized實現 it was obvious明顯:
106
337853
2031
05:51
we could apply應用 this same相同 idea理念
to lost丟失 heritage遺產 anywhere隨地.
107
339908
3904
05:56
And so, we decided決定 to change更改
the name名稱 of the project項目 to RekreiRekrei.
108
344559
4015
改名為 Rekrei(重建)。
06:02
Then, in the summer夏季 of last year,
109

06:16
Can you imagine想像 us saying no?
115

06:17
Of course課程 not.
116
365992

06:19

07:26
some people have been asking the question:

有些人一直在問這個問題:
07:28
Can we print打印 them in 3D?
142
436534
3396
07:32
We believe 3D printing印花
doesn't offer提供 a straightforward直截了當 solution
143
440555
4257

07:38
Once一旦 an object目的 is destroyed銷毀,

But 3D printing印花 does offer提供

08:40
Using運用 Sketchfab'sSketchfab的 online線上 viewer觀眾,
165
508844
1954
08:42
we can show顯示 that we have reconstructed重建
three parts部分 of the exterior外觀 of the tomb,
166
510822
5655
08:48
but we also have photos相片 of the inside,
167
516501
1905
08:50
so we're beginning開始 to create創建
a reconstruction重建 of the wall
168
518430
2669
08:53
and the ceiling天花板.
169
521123
1150
for many許多, many許多 years年份,
170
522781
2907
08:57
so we also have architectural建築的
drawing畫畫 plans計劃 of this lost丟失 heritage遺產.
171
525712
4737
09:04
Unfortunately不幸, we are not only losing失去
cultural文化 heritage遺產 to areas of conflict衝突
172
532339
6382
09:10
and at war戰爭 --
173
538745
1151
09:11
we're also losing失去 it to natural自然 disasters災害.
174
539920
2299
09:14
This is a 3D model模型

before the earthquake地震
that occurred發生 last April四月 ...
176
546772
2650
09:22
and this is after.
177
550297
1250
09:24
You may可能 be thinking思維,
178
552563
1598
09:26
you didn't create創建 these 3D models楷模
with only tourist遊客 photographs照片,
179
554185
3669
09:29
and that's true真正.
180
557878
1391
09:31
But what this represents代表
181
559293
1476
09:32
is the ability能力 for large, public上市
09:36
to come together一起
for initiatives倡議 like ours我們的.
183
564563
2410
09:41
And so one of the major重大的 challenges挑戰
of our project項目, really,
184
569759
3088
09:44
is to find photographs照片 that were taken採取
before something happens發生, right?
185
572871
3888
09:49
Well, the internet互聯網 is basically基本上 a database數據庫
with millions百萬 of images圖片, right?
186
577620
6024
09:55
Exactly
187
583668
1351
09:57
So we have begun開始 to develop發展 a tool工具
188
585043
3435
10:00
that allows允許 us to extract提取 images圖片
from websites網站 like FlickrFlickr的,
189
588502
3922
Flickr
10:04
based基於 on their geotags地理標記,
190
592448
1498
10:05
to complete完成 reconstructions重建.
191
593970
1583
10:08
Because we're not only losing失去 cultural文化
heritage遺產 to natural自然 disasters災害 and in war戰爭,
192
596396
6763
10:15
but we're also losing失去 it
to something else其他.
193
603183
2969
10:19
Any idea理念, just looking
at these two pictures圖片?
194
607777
2531
10:23
Maybe it's a little difficult to remember記得,
195
611649
2640
10:26
but only a few少數 weeks ago,
196
614313
2420
10:28
this was the example of human人的
10:33
Because a tourist遊客 in Lisbon里斯本
wanted to climb onto this statue雕像
198
621949
5309
10:39
and take a selfie自拍 with it --
199

and pulled it down with him.
201
629696
1532
10:43
So we're already已經 finding發現 photographs照片
202
631596
1989
10:45
to complete完成 a digital數字
reconstruction重建 of this.
203
633609
2154
10:48
We need to remember記得
204
636974
1286
10:50
that the destruction毀壞 of cultural文化 heritage遺產
isn't a recent最近 phenomenon現象.
