ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Fawn Qiu - Technologist
Fawn Qiu is a multi-disciplinary technologist who introduces the creative side of engineering through playful projects.

Why you should listen

When Qiu managed product development in the technology industry, she noticed a significant lack of women and minorities in her company, so she began to experiment with introducing engineering to people in a more creative and accessible way. From costumes that blink to robots that move to a physical version of the popular app Flappy Bird, these projects engaged people from diverse backgrounds, especially women and minorities. As a result, she founded Make Anything, an organization that empowers people from all technological backgrounds through creative technology workshops.

Qiu was a former research assistant at the MIT Media Lab. She has also developed and launched several mobile applications at major technology companies. Her interactive art installations have been featured in festivals and galleries around the world. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Pennsylvania and a Master’s Degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Minha inspiração vem
de problemas na minha vida diária.
00:24
For example,
4

1216
Por exemplo,
00:26
one time I needed a costume
to go to a comic convention,
5
14120
4016
uma vez eu precisava de uma fantasia
pra ir a uma convenção de quadrinhos,
00:30
but I didn't want to spend too much money,
6
18160
2056
mas não queria gastar muito dinheiro
00:32
so I made my own ...
7
20240
1200
então fiz a minha...
00:34
with a light-up crown and skirt.

00:38
Another time,
10
26640
1216
Outra vez,
00:39
I was devastated
because my favorite mobile game,
11
27880
3936
eu estava arrasada porque meu jogo
de celular favorito, Flappy Bird,
00:43
Flappy Bird,
12
31840
1216
estava sendo retirado
da loja de aplicativos.
00:45
was being taken off the app store.
13
33080
1656
00:46
(Laughter)
14
34760
2056
(Risos)
Então, estava com um dilema
00:48
So I was faced with the dilemma
15
36840
1536
00:50
to either never update my phone
or never play Flappy Bird again.
16
38400
3896
de nunca mais atualizar o meu celular
ou nunca mais jogar Flappy Bird.
00:54
(Laughter)
17
42320
1880
(Risos)
00:57
Unhappy with both options,
18
45240
2016
Insatisfeita com as duas opções,
00:59
I did the only thing
that made sense to me.
19
47280
2536
fiz a única coisa
que fazia sentido para mim:
01:01
I made a physical version of Flappy Bird
20
49840
2176
fiz uma versão física do Flappy Bird
01:04
that could never be
taken off the app store.
21
52040
2096
que nunca poderia ser retirada
da loja de aplicativos.
01:06
(Laughter)
22
54160

(Risos)
(Vídeo)
01:09
(Music)
23

(Música)
01:14
(Beeping)
24

1536
(Música)
01:18
(Laughter)
26

(Risos)
01:21
So a few of my friends
were also pretty addicted to the game,
27
69000
3256
Alguns dos meus amigos
também eram viciados no jogo,
01:24
and I invited them to play as well.
28
72280
1920
então os convidei para jogar também.
01:26
(Video) Friend: Ah!
29
74960
1216
(Vídeo) Amiga: Ahhh!
01:28
(Laughter)
30
76200
1560
(Risos)
01:31
(Video) Friend: What the heck?
31
79000
1616
Amiga: Mas que diabos?
01:32
(Laughter)
32
80640
1016
(Risos)
01:33
And they told me that it was
just as infuriating as the original game.
33
81680
3976
Fawn Qiu: Eles disseram que a minha versão
era tão irritante quanto o jogo original.
01:37
(Laughter)
34
85680
1336
(Risos)
01:39
So I uploaded a demo
of this project online,
35
87040
3376
Então coloquei uma versão
de demonstração desse projeto on-line
01:42
and to my surprise it went viral.
36
90440
2496
e, para minha surpresa,
ela se tornou viral.
01:44
It had over two million views
in just a few days.
37
92960
3096
Teve mais de 2 milhões de visitas
em apenas alguns dias.
(Risos)
01:48
(Laughter)
38
96080
1416
E o que é mais interessante
são os comentários das pessoas.
01:49
And what's more interesting
are people's comments.
39
97520
3216
01:52
A lot of people
wanted to make it their own,
40
100760
2416
Muita gente queria
fazer sua própria versão,
01:55
or asked me how it was made.
41
103200
1856
ou me perguntar como era feito.
01:57
So this kind of confirmed my idea
that through a creative project,
42
105080
4296
Isso confirmou minha ideia
de que, através de um projeto criativo,
02:01
we can teach people about engineering.
43
109400
2160
podemos ensinar engenharia às pessoas.
02:04
With the money made from the viral video,
44
112440
2136
Com o dinheiro que veio do vídeo viral,
02:06
we were able to let students
in our classroom
45
114600
2256
conseguimos permitir,
aos alunos da nossa turma,
02:08
all make their own game in a box.
46
116880
2080
fazerem suas próprias versões
do jogo em uma caixa.
02:11
Although it was pretty challenging,
47
119560
1856
Embora isso fosse muito desafiador,
02:13
they learned a lot of new concepts
in engineering and programming.
48
121440
3200
eles aprenderam diversos novos conceitos
de engenharia e programação.
E ficaram empolgados em aprender,
porque queriam completar o jogo.
02:17
And they were all eager to learn
so they could finish the game as well.
49
125160
3336
02:20
(Laughter)
50
128520
1399
(Risos)
02:22
So before Flappy Bird Box,
51
130440
2616
Então antes do Flappy Bird,
02:25
I had the idea of using creative
engineering projects to teach students.
52
133080
5536
pensei em usar projetos de engenharia
criativos para ensinar os alunos.
Quando estava ensinando
os alunos de ensino médio,
02:30
When I was teaching at a middle school,
53
138640
2256
02:32
we asked our students to build a robot
from a standard technology kit.
54
140920
4816
pedimos para nossos alunos construírem
um robô de um kit tecnológico padrão.
Notei que muitos deles
pareciam entendiados.
02:37
And I noticed that
a lot of them seemed bored.
55
145760
2896
02:40
Then a few of them
started taking pieces of paper
56
148680
2776
Então alguns deles começaram
a pegar pedaços de papel
e decorar seus robôs.
02:43
and decorating their robots.
57
151480
1616
Então outros fizeram isso,
02:45
And then more of them got into it,
58
153120
1936
e ficaram mais interessados no projeto.
02:47
and they became
more interested in the project.
59
155080
2616
Então comecei a procurar
maneiras mais criativas
02:49
So I started looking
for more creative ways
60
157720
2896
de introduzir a tecnologia para os alunos.
02:52
to introduce technology to students.
61
160640
2360
02:55
What I found was that most technology kits
available in school
62
163560
4136
O que descobri foi que a maioria dos kits
tecnológicos disponíveis na escola
02:59
look a little intimidating.
63
167720
1856
pareciam um pouco intimidadores.
Todos eles são feitos de partes
plásticas que você não pode adaptar.
03:01
They're all made of plastic parts
that you can't customize.
64
169600
3160
03:05
On top of that,
they're all very expensive,
65
173560
2616
E, acima de tudo, são muito caros,
03:08
costing hundreds of dollars per kit.
66
176200
2456
custam centenas dólares por kit.
03:10
So that's certainly not very affordable
for most classroom budgets.
67
178680
4040
Então é óbvio que eles não são acessíveis
para a maioria dos orçamentos escolares.
Já que não achei nada,
03:15
Since I didn't find anything,
68
183320
1456
03:16
I decided to make something on my own.
69
184800
2216
decidi fazer algo por conta própria.
Comecei com papel e tecido.
03:19
I started with paper and fabric.
70
187040
2936
Afinal, todos nós brincamos
com isso desde que éramos crianças,
03:22
After all, we all played
with those since we were kids,
71
190000
3176
03:25
and they are also pretty cheap
72
193200
1536
e eles são muito baratos
03:26
and can be found
anywhere around the house.
73
194760
2760
e podem ser encontrados
em qualquer lugar pela casa.
03:30
And I prototyped a project
74
198200
1696
Fiz um protótipo de um projeto
03:31
where students
can create a light-up creature
75
199920
2576
no qual os estudantes podem
criar uma criatura iluminada
03:34
using fabric and googly eyes.
76
202520
2496
usando tecidos e olhos de plástico.
Todos eles estavam ajudando
uns aos outros na classe,
03:37
They were all helping
each other in classrooms,
77
205040
2216
03:39
and were laughing
and discussing the project.
78
207280
2416
e estávamos rindo e discutindo o projeto.
E, mais importante,
03:41
And most importantly,
79
209720
1216
eles foram capazes de colocar
sua própria criatividade no projeto.
03:42
they were able to insert
their own creativity into the project.
80
210960
2960
Então, devido ao sucesso do projeto,
03:46
So because of the success of this project,
81
214680
2056
03:48
I continued to create
more engineering projects
82
216760
2696
continuei criando mais
projetos de engenharia
para desafiar os estudantes.
03:51
to challenge my students.
83
219480
1856
03:53
And I also started to take
these workshops outside of school
84
221360
3896
E também comecei a fazer
esses workshops fora da escola,
03:57
and into the community.
85
225280
1536
na comunidade.
03:58
And something really interesting happened.
86
226840
2336
E algo realmente interessante aconteceu.
Notei que muitas pessoas,
de diferentes formações,
04:01
I noticed a lot of people
from very diverse backgrounds
87
229200
3016
04:04
started coming to our workshops.
88
232240
2376
começaram a aparecer nos nossos workshops.
E, mais especificamente,
04:06
And specifically,
89
234640
1376
04:08
there were a lot more women
and minorities than I expected,
90
236040
4856
havia muito mais mulheres
e minorias do que esperávamos,
04:12
and that you wouldn't usually see
at a traditional engineering workshop.
91
240920
3400
que você não vê normalmente
em workshops de engenharia tradicionais.
Agora veja este relatório de uma grande
companhia de tecnologia em 2016.
04:17
Now take a look at this employee report
at a major technology company in 2016.
92
245280
5896
04:23
Women make up only 19 percent
of the technology workforce.
93
251200
4056
As mulheres correspondem
a 19% da força de trabalho em tecnologia.
E minorias correspondem a 4%.
04:27
And underrepresented minorities
make up only four percent.
94
255280
3400
04:31
This statistic might look familiar
95
259440
2055
Esta estatística pode parecer familiar
04:33
if you walked into
a high school robotics club,
96
261519
3537
se você visitasse um grupo
de robótica de ensino médio
04:37
or a college engineering class.
97
265080
1960
ou uma turma de estudantes de engenharia.
04:39
Now, there's a wide variety of problems
98
267720
4296
Agora, há uma grande
variedade de problemas
que contribuem para a falta
de diversidade na área de tecnologia.
04:44
that contribute to the lack of diversity
in the technology force.
99
272040
4376
Talvez uma solução fosse
introduzir tecnologia
04:48
Perhaps one solution could be
100
276440
2056
04:50
to introduce technology to students
through creative projects.
101
278520
4480
para estudantes através
de projetos criativos.
04:55
I'm not saying that this
could solve everything,
102
283880
3136
Não estou dizendo
que isso resolvesse tudo,
mas isso poderia apresentar a tecnologia
04:59
but it could introduce technology
103
287040
3176
para pessoas que geralmente
não estariam interessadas
05:02
to people who originally
wouldn't be interested in it
104
290240
2656
devido à forma como tem sido
mostrada e ensinada na escola.
05:04
because of how it has been
portrayed and taught in school.
105
292920
2920
Então como começamos a mudar
esta percepção da tecnologia?
05:08
So how do we start to change
the perception of technology?
106
296760
5136
05:13
Most students think
that it's boring or unwelcoming,
107
301920
4616
A maioria dos estudantes pensa
que isso é chato ou desagradável,
então sempre realizo
projetos seguindo três princípios.
05:18
so I have always designed projects
following three principles.
108
306560
3776
O primeiro é ser simples,
05:22
First is having a low floor,
109
310360
2496
o que significa que é fácil de começar.
05:24
and that means this project
is easy to get started.
110
312880
3080
05:29
So take a look at this tutorial.
111
317080
2776
Dê uma olhada neste tutorial.
O primeiro projeto que pedimos
para os alunos fazerem
05:31
The first project
we asked students to learn
112
319880
2096
05:34
is to make a circuit on paper.
113
322000
2096
é um circuito no papel.
Como você pode ver, isto não leva
muito tempo para aprender,
05:36
As you can see, it doesn't
take very long to learn,
114
324120
2496
05:38
and it's pretty easy even for beginners.
115
326640
2320
e é muito fácil, mesmo para iniciantes.
Ser simples também significa que estamos
removendo a barreira financeira
05:41
And having a low floor also means
that we're removing the financial barrier
116
329800
4616
05:46
that prevents people
from completing a project.
117
334440
3016
que dificulta as pessoas
de completarem um projeto.
Então com papel, fita de cobre,
lâmpada e bateria,
05:49
So with paper, copper tape,
lightbulb and a battery,
118
337480
3856
as pessoas podem completar
este projeto com menos de US$ 1.
05:53
people can complete this project
for under a dollar.
119
341360
3160
05:57
So second principle
is having a high ceiling.
120
345280
3456
O segundo princípio
é ter espaço para crescer.
Isto quer dizer que deve
permitir melhorias
06:00
This means that there's
a lot of room to grow,
121
348760
3056
06:03
and students are
constantly being challenged.
122
351840
2280
e que os estudantes são
constantemente desafiados.
06:07
At first it might just be
a light-up creature,
123
355400
2576
No começo pode ser
apenas uma criatura iluminada,
mas depois você pode adicionar
sensores e microcontroladores,
06:10
but then you can add sensors
and microcontrollers,
124
358000
2816
06:12
and start to program the creature
to interact with its environment.
125
360840
3736
e começar a programar a criatura
para interagir com o ambiente.
(Risos)
06:16
(Laughter)
126
364600
1376
06:18
And finally,
127
366000
1336
E finalmente,
o terceiro princípio é personalizar.
06:19
the third principle is customization.
128
367360
2456
Isso significa que podemos tornar
este projeto relevante para qualquer um.
06:21
This means that we can make
this project relevant to anyone.
129
369840
5016
06:26
That's the beauty
of using everyday materials;
130
374880
2496
Essa é a beleza de usar
materiais do dia a dia;
É muito fácil personalizar
usando papel e tecido.
06:29
it's very easy to customize
using paper and fabric.
131
377400
3200
06:33
So even if you don't like Flappy Bird,
132
381160
3176
Então mesmo que você
não goste de Flappy Bird,
você ainda pode fazer seu próprio jogo.
06:36
you can still make your own game.
133
384360
1640
06:39
(Video) Student: So our game
is about Justin Bieber,
134
387440
2456
(Vídeo) Então nosso jogo
é sobre Justin Bieber,
porque ele está correndo,
06:41
because he's been speeding,
135
389920
2696
06:44
and the object is to prevent him
from getting caught by the LAPD --
136
392640
4696
e o objetivo é evitar
que ele seja pego pela polícia...
(Risos)
06:49
(Laughter)
137
397360
2280
06:52
(Video) Student:
Yeah, but he's changing so --
138
400000
2176
Estudante: Sim, mas ele
está mudando, então...
06:54
we're a part of his posse.
139
402200
2136
nós somos parte de seu bando.
(Risos)
