ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Safwat Saleem - Artist, graphic designer, filmmaker
Safwat Saleem uses satire and art to bring to light stories of adversity.

Why you should listen

Safwat Saleem is a Pakistani-American visual artist, graphic designer and filmmaker. He's best known for making politically-charged satirical art. Safwat's artwork has used a variety of media, including illustration, writing, animation, audio, film and sculpture. He often combines several media to create multimedia storytelling experiences that get his audiences talking -- and laughing -- about subjects that tend to otherwise make people feel uncomfortable. Saleem is also the founder of Bandbaja, a Pakistani music magazine that promoted the use of modern popular music as a socio-political tool.

Saleem has a penchant for doing voiceovers in his films for all kinds of silly characters like a bear, sheep, greeting card and a whale to name a few. His work is shown regularly in galleries around the U.S. and has been featured in publications such as Wired, BoingBoing and Brainpickings. Safwat is a TED Senior Fellow and he likes pizza (like, a lot).

And so you see, eventually終於 for me to even

04:46
I can slow it down, speed速度 it up,

105
274100

04:49
And if I stutter口吃 along沿 the way,

106
277935

04:53
I just go back in and fix固定 it.

04:56
SSSS: Using運用 my highly高度 edited編輯
voice語音 in my work
109
284768
2905
04:59
was a way for me
to finally最後 sound聲音 normal正常 to myself.
110
287697
3555
05:04
But after the comments註釋 on the video視頻,
111
292302
2145
05:06
it no longer made製作 me feel normal正常.
112
294924
2005
05:09
And so I stopped停止
using運用 my voice語音 in my work.
113
297897
2373
05:13
Since以來 then, I've thought a lot
about what it means手段 to be normal正常.
114
301984
3766
05:19
And I've come to understand理解
115
307218
2018
05:21
that "normal正常" has a lot to do
with expectations期望.
116
309260
3379
05:25
Let me give you an example.
117
313307
1529
05:26
I came來了 across橫過 this story故事
118
314860
1330
05:28
about the Ancient Greek希臘語 writer作家, Homer荷馬.
119
316214
2266
05:30
Now, Homer荷馬 mentions提到
very few少數 colors顏色 in his writing寫作.
120
318504
3249
05:34
And even when he does,
121
322650
1605
05:36
he seems似乎 to get them quite相當 a bit wrong錯誤.
122
324279
2038
05:38
For example, the sea
is described描述 as wine紅酒 red,
123
326936
3292
05:42
people's人們 faces面孔 are sometimes有時 green綠色
and sheep are purple紫色.
124
330252
3547
05:46
But it's not just Homer
125
334838
1375
05:48
If you look at all
of the ancient literature文學 --
126
336237
2309
05:52
and even the original原版的 Hebrew希伯來語 Bible聖經 --
128
340794
2677
05:55
they all mention提到 very few少數 colors顏色.
129
343495
2576
05:58
And the most popular流行 theory理論
for why that might威力 be the case案件
130
346745
3380
06:02
is that cultures文化 begin開始
to recognize認識 a color顏色
131
350149
2404
06:04
only once一旦 they have the ability能力
to make that color顏色.
132
352577
3085
06:07
So basically基本上, if you can make a color顏色,
133
355686
1850
06:09
only then can you see it.
134
357560
1626
06:11
A color顏色 like red, which哪一個 was fairly相當 easy簡單
for many許多 cultures文化 to make --
135
359727
3659
06:15
they began開始 to see that color顏色
fairly相當 early on.
136
363410
2831
06:18
But a color顏色 like blue藍色,
which哪一個 was much harder更難 to make --
137
366265
2743
06:21
many許多 cultures文化 didn't begin開始 to learn學習
how to make that color顏色
138
369032
2753
06:23
until直到 much later後來.
139
371809
1166
06:24
They didn't begin開始 to see it
until直到 much later後來 as well.
140
372999
2516
06:27
So until直到 then, even though雖然
a color顏色 might威力 be all around them,
141
375539
3650
06:31
they simply只是 did not have
the ability能力 to see it.
142
379213
2445
06:33
It was invisIble無形.
143
381682
1158
06:34
It was not a part部分 of their normal正常.
144
382864
2380
06:38
And that story故事 has helped幫助
put my own擁有 experience經驗 into context上下文.
145
386593
2902
06:42
So when I first read
the comments註釋 on the video視頻,
146
390376
2470
06:44
my initial初始 reaction反應 was to take it
all very personally親自.
147
392870
2895
06:48
But the people commenting評論 did not know
148
396543
1898
I am about my voice語音.
149
398465
2860
06:54
They were mostly大多 reacting反應 to my accent口音,
150
402258
2647
06:56
that it is not normal正常
for a narrator敘述者 to have an accent口音.
151
404929
3517
07:01
But what is normal正常, anyway無論如何?
152
409089
1503
07:03
We know that reviewers評審 will find
more spelling拼字 errors錯誤 in your writing寫作
153
411473
3362
07:06
if they think you're black黑色.
154
414859
1371
07:09
We know that professors教授 are less likely容易
to help female or minority少數民族 students學生們.
155
417144
4292
07:14
And we know that resumes
07:17
get more callbacks回調 than resumes簡歷
07:21
Why is that?
158
429043
1198
07:23
Because of our expectations期望
of what is normal正常.
159
431011
2443
07:26
We think it is normal正常
160
434135
1579
07:27
when a black黑色 student學生 has spelling拼字 errors錯誤.
161
435738
2105
07:30
We think it is normal正常
162
438264
1715
07:32
when a female or minority少數民族 student學生
does not succeed成功.
163
440003
3192
07:35
And we think it is normal正常
164
443962
1639
07:37
that a white白色 employee僱員
is a better hire聘請 than a black黑色 employee僱員.
165
445625
3086
07:41
But studies學習 also show顯示
that discrimination區別 of this kind,
166
449399
2594
07:44
in most cases, is simply只是 favoritism偏愛,
167
452017
2045
07:46
and it results結果 more from wanting希望
to help people that you can relate涉及 to
168
454086
3518
07:50
than the desire慾望 to harm危害 people
that you can't relate涉及 to.
169
458493
3197
07:54
And not relating有關 to people
starts啟動 at a very early age年齡.
170
462944
3207
07:58
Let me give you an example.
171
466175
1380
07:59
One library圖書館 that keeps保持 track跟踪 of characters人物
172
467949
3549
08:03
in the children's兒童 book
collection採集 every一切 year,
173
471522
3293
08:06
found發現 that in 2014,
only about 11 percent百分 of the books圖書
174
474839
5281
08:12
had a character字符 of color顏色.
175
480144
2200
08:14
And just the year before,
that number was about eight percent百分,
176
482368
3677
08:18
even though雖然 half of American美國 children孩子
today今天 come from a minority少數民族 background背景.
177
486069
3808
08:21
Half.
178
489901
1150
一半!
08:23
So there are two big issues問題 here.
179
491353
1624
08:25
Number one, children孩子 are told
that they can be anything,
180
493001
2657
08:27
they can do anything,
181
495682
1151
08:28
and yet然而, most stories故事
that children孩子 of color顏色 consume消耗
182
496857
2473
08:31
are about people who are not like them.
183
499354
1878
08:33
Number two is that majority多數 groups
don't get to realize實現
184
501256
2759
08:36
the great extent程度 to which哪一個
they are similar類似 to minorities少數民族 --
185
504039
3033
08:39
our everyday每天 experiences經驗, our hopes希望,
186
507096
3047
08:42
our dreams, our fears恐懼
187
510167
1872
08:44
and our mutual相互 love for hummus鷹嘴豆泥.
188
512063
1773
08:45
It's delicious
189
513860
1309
08:47
(Laughter
190
515193
1707
08:49
Just like the color顏色 blue藍色
for Ancient Greeks希臘人,
191
517911
2683
08:52
minorities少數民族 are not a part部分
of what we consider考慮 normal正常,
192
520618
3321
08:57
because normal正常 is simply只是 a construction施工
of what we've我們已經 been exposed裸露 to,
193
525440
4961
09:02
and how visible可見 it is around us.
194
530425
1789
09:05
And this is where things
get a bit difficult.
195
533590
2132
09:08
I can accept接受 the preexisting預先存在的 notion概念
of normal正常 -- that normal正常 is good,
196
536714
4280
我可以就接受已存在的 '常態' 是好的概念;
09:13
and anything outside of that very
narrow狹窄 definition定義 of normal正常 is bad.
197
541018
4015
09:17
Or I can challenge
that preexisting預先存在的 notion概念 of normal正常
198
545758
3846
09:22
with my work
199
550462

09:24
and with my voice語音
