ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Sandra Fisher-Martins - Translator, plain language activist
Sandra Fisher-Martins fights “information apartheid” -- the barrier created by overly complex language.

Why you should listen

Sandra Fisher Martins helps Portuguese businesses and government agencies introduce clarity to their communications.  After seeing a Plain English campaign in England, she was inspired to establish Portugues Claro -- a consulting and training firm that works to ensure that people are not disenfranchised by what she calls an "information apartheid" that keeps the majority of her fellow Portuguese from fully understanding documents they need for their daily lives. She is working to develop Euro-clear, a European diploma in clear communication.

Sandra Fisher-Martins: The right to understand

Filmed:

Medical, legal, and financial documents should be easy to read, but too often they aren’t. With spot-on (and funny) examples, Sandra Fisher Martins shows how overly complex language separates us from the information we need -- and three steps to change that. In Portuguese with English subtitles. (Filmed at TEDxO'Porto.)

25

es muy baja; mostraré una tabla sobre

01:43
You know that about 10, 11% of people, in PortugalPortugal,
26

3581
Alrededor del 10 % u 11%
de las personas en Portugal,
01:47
don't know how to readleer norni writeescribir at all, yettodavía.
27
100273
2809
todavía no saben leer
ni escribir en absoluto.
Ahí están los que saben o dicen saber,
leer y escribir; entonces, ¿qué tenemos?
01:50
Over there are those who know, or say they know,
how to readleer and writeescribir. So, what do we have?
28
103082
4215
01:54
We have that groupgrupo of redrojo people in levelnivel 1,
whichcual is the lowestmás bajo in literacyalfabetismo [ratetarifa].
29
107297
5360
Tenemos ese grupo de personas en rojo

They are personspersonas who are ablepoder to joinunirse lettersletras,

02:05
For exampleejemplo, if a personpersona, from that redrojo groupgrupo,

Por ejemplo, si una persona de
ese grupo rojo tiene que leer

34
127496
2469
ella no lo logra, no puede

02:16
50% of the Portugueseportugués. Then we have 30% more,
those yellowamarillo onesunos,
35
129965
5128
Esto aplica al 50 % de los portugueses.
Tenemos un 30 % más en los amarillos,
02:22
over there, people who get by
on the dailydiariamente basisbase.
36
135093
4551
son las personas que
van sorteando su día a día.
Es decir, si no deben leer nada nuevo
o demasiado diferente, se manejan bien.
02:26
That is, if they don't have to readleer anything too newnuevo
or too differentdiferente, they will managegestionar.
37
139644
3374
02:30
But, for exampleejemplo, if they work in a factoryfábrica and
a newnuevo machinemáquina arrivesllega
38
143018
3700
Pero, por ejemplo, si trabajan en
una fábrica y llega una nueva máquina
02:33
and they have to readleer the machine'smáquina manualmanual

39
146718

y deben leer el manual de la máquina
para trabajar con ella, no lo lograrán.
02:38
And there they go, 80% of the Portugueseportugués people.
40
151616
4452
Y esto aplica al 80 % de los portugueses.
Luego tenemos unos pocos que
pueden entender documentos,
02:43
Then we have a fewpocos more that can handleencargarse de documentsdocumentos,
41
156068
2616
siempre que no sean demasiado complejos,
02:45
as long as they are not too complexcomplejo,
42
158684

02:47
and we have 5% of the populationpoblación that
can handleencargarse de really complexcomplejo documentsdocumentos.
43
160111
5439
y un 5 % de la población que entiende
documentos muy complejos.
02:52
Now, just so you don't think this is normalnormal,
that over there is SwedenSuecia.
44
165550
5037
Para que no piensen que
esto es normal, ahí está Suecia.
02:57
While we have 20% of people with the literacyalfabetismo
consideredconsiderado essentialesencial for a dailydiariamente basisbase,
45
170587
5349
Si bien tenemos un 20 % de personas
con una comprensión considerada esencial
03:02
SwedenSuecia has 75%.
46
175936
3517
para el día a día, Suecia tiene el 75 %.
03:06
And looking at that, what did I realizedarse cuenta de?
47
179453
2108
Y al ver eso, ¿de qué me di cuenta?
03:08
I realizeddio cuenta we livevivir in an apartheidsegregación racial of informationinformación.
48
181561
3335
Me di cuenta de que vivimos en
un apartheid de la información.
03:11
I realizeddio cuenta that there's a smallpequeña minorityminoría of people
who has indeeden efecto accessacceso to informationinformación
49
184896
5751
Me di cuenta de que hay una minoría
con pleno acceso a la información
03:17
and can use it to theirsu advantageventaja and
a hugeenorme majoritymayoria that can't.
50
190647
5394
que puede usarla para su beneficio
y una gran mayoría que no puede.
03:23
And because they can't, they are excludedexcluido
and they are impaireddañado.
51
196041
3806
Y debido a que no pueden,
son excluidos y están en desventaja.
Déjenme darles un ejemplo.
Este es el Sr. Domingos,
03:26
Let me give you an exampleejemplo.
52
199847
2016
03:28
That one is MrSeñor. DomingosDomingos, my building'sedificio doorkeeperportero. MrSeñor. DomingosDomingos startedempezado to readleer at the ageaños of 27,

El Sr. Domingos empezó a leer con 27 años,
03:34
so, he fallscaídas in that yellowamarillo groupgrupo that
we have seenvisto a little while agohace.
54
207230
3048
él está en ese grupo amarillo
que acabamos de ver.
03:37
From time to time, I'm arrivingllegando home and he saysdice:
55
210278
1953
A veces al llegar a casa
él me pregunta:
03:39
"MissPerder SandraSandra!"; "Yes, MrSeñor. DomingosDomingos."
56
212231
2131
"Sra. Sandra",
"Sí, Sr. Domingos, diga".
03:41
"Here is a little lettercarta." So, the dealacuerdo is: when MrSeñor. DomingosDomingos or someonealguien in the familyfamilia or in the neighbourhoodbarrio
57
214362
4519
"Una cartita". Cuando el Sr. Domingos
o alguien de la familia o en el vecindario
03:45

they come to me and I help them to translatetraducir it.
58
218881

03:49
And so, that time he said to me like this:
59
222576
1610
Y me dijo:
"Estoy a punto de tirar esto a la basura,
pero dígame primero si es importante".
03:51
"Oh, MissPerder SandraSandra, I'm about to throwlanzar this away,
but checkcomprobar it if this is importantimportante."
60

It was very importantimportante. He had been waitingesperando,

Era muy importante. Había esperado,
mucho tiempo a una cirugía de rodilla

62

cuando una persona espera mucho tiempo,

04:07
It was almostcasi thrownarrojado away into the garbagebasura,

64

Y la carta casi acaba en la basura,
la carta del Sr. Domingos.
04:10
In that samemismo yearaño, I've foundencontró out,
65

En ese mismo año descubrí que

66
245475

04:16
The other 80%, I don't believe they had been curedcurado
while they were waitingesperando.
67
249069
6087
El otro 80 % no creo que
se curaran solos en la espera.
04:22
They mostmás likelyprobable did the samemismo as MrSeñor. DomingosDomingos:
68
255156
3036
Es más probable que hicieran
lo mismo que el Sr. Domingos:
"¡Ah! ¿Qué es esto? No entiendo,
pues a la basura".
04:25
"AhAh! What's this? I'm not understandingcomprensión,
it's going to the garbagebasura".

Find more examples of plain language at Portugues Claro's website.
