ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rob Legato - Visual Effects Guru
Rob Legato creates surprising and creative visual illusions for movies.

Why you should listen

Did we really see what we thought we saw? Rob Legato creates visual illusions for movies -- thinking deeply both about vfx's expanding tech power and the truly new creative processes that can result. Legato won his first Oscar in 1998 for his work on James Cameron's Titanic, after several years in television supervising effects on two Star Trek series. His 2012 Oscar win for Hugo, the 3D film about a boy who lives alone in a Paris train station, underscores his fascinating partnership with Martin Scorsese -- doing digital effects on documentaries and new classics like The Departed.

He's worked with the big effects houses like Sony Imageworks and Digital Domain, but is now fascinated with the nimble new workflows made possible with digital tools. He designed the "virtual cinematography pipeline" that let James Cameron shoot Avatar like a feature film, not a software project. We know that fx can create new worlds -- but how can these tools unlock new creativity?

So now I'm in a parkingパーキング lot. Basically基本的に it's a tin can,

03:06
and I'm basically基本的に recreating再作成する the launch打ち上げ with

03:22
is something that's a total合計 falsehood虚偽, and I found見つけた that
64
186488
2435
03:24
really kind種類 of fascinating魅力的な.
65
188923

03:26
And in this particular特に case場合, this is the climaxクライマックス of the movie映画,
66
190317
2976
03:29
and, you know, the weight重量 of achieving達成する it was simply単に
67
193293
3209
03:32
take a modelモデル, throwスロー it out of a helicopterヘリコプター, and shootシュート it.
68
196502
3570
03:35
And that's simply単に what I did.
69
200072
2003
03:37
That's me shooting射撃, and I'm a fairlyかなり mediocre平凡な operatorオペレーター,
70

03:40
so I got that niceいい senseセンス of verisimilitude真実性, of a kind種類 of,
71
204552
3539
03:43
you know, following以下 the rocketロケット all the way down,
72
208091
2832
03:46
and giving与える that little sortソート of edgeエッジ, I was desperately必死に
73
210923

03:48
trying試す to keep it in frameフレーム. So then I come up to the next thing.
74
212602
3500
03:52
We had a NASANASA consultantコンサルタント who was actually実際に an astronaut宇宙飛行士,
75
216102
2597
03:54
who was actually実際に on some of the missionsミッション, of Apolloアポロ 15,
76
218699
3005
03:57
and he was there to basically基本的に doubleダブル checkチェック my science科学.
77
221704
3519
04:01
And, I guess推測 somebody誰か thought they needed必要な to do that.
78
225223
3521
04:04
(Laughter
79
228744
1732
04:06
I don't know why, but they thought they did.
80
230476
2588
04:08
So we were, he's a heroヒーロー, he's an astronaut宇宙飛行士, and
81
233064
4142
04:13
we're all sortソート of excited興奮した, and, you know, I gave与えた myself私自身
82
237206
2806
04:15
the liberty自由 of saying言って, you know, some of the shotsショット I did
83
240012
2471
04:18
didn't really suck吸う that bad悪い.
84
242483
2409
04:20
And so maybe, you know, we were feeling感じ kind種類 of a little
85
244892
3260
04:24
good about it, so I brought持ってきた him in here, and he needed必要な
86
248152
2457
04:26
to really checkチェック and see what we were doing,
87
250609
2537
04:29
and basically基本的に give us our A plusプラス report報告する cardカード,
88
253146
2986
04:32
and so I showed示した him some shotsショット we were workingワーキング on,
89
256132
1965
04:33
and waiting待っている for the reaction反応 that you hope希望 for,
90
258097

04:37
whichどの is what I got.
04:40
So I showed示した him these two shotsショット,
92
264296
2039
04:42
and then he basically基本的に told me what he thought.
93
266335
3417
04:45
("That's wrong違う") (Laughter笑い)
94
269752
2537
04:48
Okay. (Laughter
95
272289
2959
04:51
It's what you dream about.

04:53
(Laughter
97
277172

04:56
So what I got from him is, he turned回した to me and said,
98
280172
3507
04:59
"You would never, ever design設計 a rocketロケット like that.

And he was looking at me. It's like, Yeah, I don't know

07:03
So he basically基本的に setセット up, or basically基本的に shattered砕けた
145
407726
2281
07:05
the suspensionサスペンション of disbelief不信, because what he photographed撮影した

07:08
was the realリアル thing, a Mirミル subサブ going down, or actually実際に

and he created作成した this very haunting出没 footage映像.
149
418180
2037
07:16
It's really beautiful綺麗な, and it conjures想起 up all these
150
420217
2873
07:18
various様々な different異なる emotions感情, but he couldn'tできなかった photograph写真
151
423090

07:21
everything, and to tell the storyストーリー,
152
425284

07:23
I had to fill埋める in the gaps隙間, whichどの is now ratherむしろ daunting大変なこと,
153
428013

07:25
because now I have to recreate再作成する back to back
154

07:28
what really happened起こった and I had, I'm the only one

156

07:35
So this is the footage映像 he photographed撮影した,
157
439754

07:37
and it was prettyかなり moving動く and prettyかなり awe-inspiring畏敬の念を起こす.
158
441794
4644
07:42
So I'm going to just let it run走る, so you kind種類 of absorb吸収します
159
446438

07:50
I got the feeling感じ that my brain wanted to basically基本的に

see it come back to life.
163
459379

07:56
I automatically自動的に wanted to see this ship,
164
460764

07:59
this magnificent壮大 ship, basically基本的に in all its glory栄光,
165
463485

08:02
and conversely逆に, I wanted to see it not in all its glory栄光,
166
466148
3076
08:05
basically基本的に go back to what it looks外見 like.
167
469224
2448
08:07
So I conjured呪われた up an effect効果 that I'm later後で going to showショー you
168
471672

08:11
what I tried試した to do, whichどの is kind種類 of the heartハート of the movie映画,
169
475132

08:13
for me, and so that's why I wanted to do the movie映画,
170
477537

08:17
that's why I wanted to create作成する the sortソート of things I created作成した.
171
481136
3596
08:20
And I'll showショー you, you know, another別の thing that I found見つけた
172
484732
1981
08:22
interesting面白い is what we really were emotingエモートする to
173
486713

08:24

So here'sここにいる the behind後ろに the scenesシーン, a coupleカップル of little shotsショット here.
175
490418
2906
08:29
So, when you saw my footage映像,
176
493324
1963
08:31
you were seeing見る this: basically基本的に, a bunch of guys
177

Jimジム went行った three milesマイル went行った down, and I went行った about

08:45

183
509373

08:47
And so, but what you're emotingエモートする to, or what you're looking
184
511973
2231
08:50
at, had the same同じ feeling感じ, the same同じ haunting出没 quality品質,
185
514204
3112
08:53
that Jim'sジムズ footage映像 had, so I found見つけた it so fascinating魅力的な
186
517316
3241
08:56
that our brains頭脳 sortソート of, once一度 you believe something's何か realリアル,
187
520557
4492

09:06
It's totally完全に make-believe偽り, yetまだ it's not to you,
190

09:09
and I found見つけた that that was a very interesting面白い thing
191
533980
2000
09:11
to explore探検する and use, and it caused原因 me to create作成する the next
192
535980
2795
09:14
effect効果 that I'll showショー you, whichどの is
193
538775
1795
09:16
this sortソート of magicマジック transition遷移, and all I was really attempting試みる
194
540570
3215
09:19
to do is basically基本的に have the audience聴衆 cue合図 the effect効果,
195
543785
3953
09:23
so it becameなりました a seamlessシームレス experience経験 for them,
196
547738
2652
09:26
that I wasn'tなかった showing表示 you my sortソート of interpretation解釈,
197
550390

09:28
I was showing表示 you what you wanted to see.
198
552720
2921
09:31
And the very next shotショット, right after this --
199
555641
6783
09:38
So you can see what I was doing.
200
562424
1565
09:39
So basically基本的に, if there's two subsサブ in the same同じ shotショット,
201
563989
1794
09:41
I shotショット it, because where'sどこですか the cameraカメラ coming到来 from?
202
565783
2908
09:44
And when Jimジム shotショット it, it was only one subサブ,
203
568691
1561
09:46
because he was photographing撮影 from the other,
204
570252
1271
09:47
and I don't remember思い出す if I did this or Jimジム did this.
205
571523
1704
09:49
I'll give it to Jimジム, because he could use the patパット on the back.
206
573227
3370
09:52
(Laughter
207
576597
6318

09:58
Okay. So now the Titanicタイタニック transition遷移.
208
582915
2339
10:01
So this is what I was referring参照する to where I wanted to basically基本的に
209

10:04
magically魔法のように transplant移植 from one state状態 of the Titanicタイタニック

and of courseコース you're looking at the two people on the bow
218
622224

10:40

11:48
Sashaサシャ Baron男爵 Cohenコーエン is a very clever賢い, very smartスマート guy,

Very dangerous危険な, very impossible不可能 to do, and particularly特に

12:10
So let me showショー you the sceneシーン, and then I basically基本的に

12:12
used the trickトリック that was identified特定された by Sergeiセルゲイ Eisensteinアイゼンシュタイン,
