ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rives - Performance poet, multimedia artist
Performance artist and storyteller Rives has been called "the first 2.0 poet," using images, video and technology to bring his words to life.

Why you should listen

Part poet, part storyteller, part philosopher, Rives is the co-host of TEDActive as well as a frequent TED speaker. On stage, his poems burst in many directions, exposing multiple layers and unexpected treats: childhood memories, grown-up humor, notions of love and lust, of what is lost forever and of what's still out there waiting to unfold. Chimborazo.

A regular on HBO's Def Poetry Jam, Rives also starred alongside model Bar Refaeli in the 2008 Bravo special Ironic Iconic America, touring the United States on a "roller coaster ride through the eye-popping panorama of American pop culture." Flat pages can't contain his storytelling, even when paper is his medium. The pop-up books he creates for children unfold with surprise: The Christmas Pop-Up Present expands to reveal moving parts, hidden areas and miniature booklets inside.

His latest project—the Museum of Four in the Morning—is an ode to a time that may well be part of a global conspiracy. In a good way.

Rives: Reinventando o jogo da enciclopédia

Filmed:

So, last month, the Encyclopaedia Britannica announced
0
611
3386
Então, no último mês, a Enciclopédia Britânica
00:19
that it is going out of print
1
3997
1749
anunciou o fim da edição impressa,
00:21
after 244 years, which made me nostalgic,
2
5746
3825
após 244 anos, o que me deixou nostálgico,
00:25
because I remember playing a game with the colossal encyclopedia set in my hometown library
3
9571
5647
00:31
back when I was a kid,
4
15218
1249
quando era criança,
00:32
maybe 12 years old.
5
16467
1343
talvez com 12 anos.
00:33
And I wondered if I could update that game,
6
17810
2640
E eu me perguntava se poderia atualizar o jogo,
00:36
not just for modern methods,
7
20450
2016
não apenas para os métodos modernos,
00:38
but for the modern me.
8
22466
1704
mas para o Eu moderno.
00:40
So I tried.
9
24170
1136
Então tentei.
00:41
I went to an online encyclopedia,
10
25306
1307
Entrei numa enciclopédia online,
00:42
Wikipedia, and I entered the term "Earth."
11
26613
2758
Wikipedia, e coloquei o termo "Terra".
00:45
You can start anywhere, this time I chose Earth.
12
29371
2666
00:47
And the first rule of the game is pretty simple.
13
32037
2478
E a primeira regra do jogo é bem fácil.
00:50
You just have to read the article
14
34515
1491
Você precisa apenas ler o artigo
00:51
until you find something you don't know,
15
36006
2588
até achar algo que não saiba,
00:54
and preferably something your dad doesn't even know.
16
38594
3105
00:57
And in this case, I quickly found this:
17
41699
2879
E nesse caso, eu rapidamente achei isso:
01:00
The furthest point from the center of the Earth
18
44578
2296
01:02
is not the tip of Mount Everest, like I might have thought,
19
46874
2473
01:05
it's the tip of this mountain: Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador.
20
49347
3296
é o topo desta montanha: Monte Chimborazo no Equador.
01:08
The Earth spins, of course, as it travels around the sun,
21
52643
3520
A Terra gira, claro, enquanto viaja ao redor do sol,
01:12
so the Earth bulges a little bit around the middle,
22
56163
1984
assim a Terra é um pouquinho inchada no centro,
01:14
like some Earthlings.
23
58147
1127
como alguns terráqueos.
01:15
And even though Mount Chimborazo isn't the tallest mountain in the Andes,
24
59274
4890
01:20
it's one degree away from the equator,
25
64164
1671
01:21
it's riding that bulge, and so the summit of Chimborazo
26
65835
3000
01:24
is the farthest point on Earth from the center of the Earth.
27
68835
3400
eis o lugar mais longínquo da Terra.
01:28
And it is really fun to say.
28
72235
2952
E é realmente divertido dizê-lo.
01:31
So I immediately decided,
29
75187
943
Assim, eu imediatamente decidi,
01:32
this is going to be the name of the game,
30
76130
1897
que esse seria o nome do jogo,
01:33
or my new exclamation.
31
78027
1487
ou minha nova exclamação.
01:35
You can use it at TED.
32
79514
970
Vocês podem usar no TED.
01:36
Chimborazo, right?
33
80484
1329
Chimborazo, certo?
01:37
It's like "eureka" and "bingo" had a baby.
34
81813
1702
01:39
I didn't know that;
35
83515
1729
Eu não sabia disso;
01:41
that's pretty cool.
36
85244
1630
é muito legal.
01:42
Chimborazo!
37
86874
1665
Chimborazo!
01:44
So the next rule of the game is also pretty simple.
38
88539
3625
Bom, a próxima regra do jogo também é bem fácil.
01:48
You just have to find another term and look that up.
39
92164
2887
Você deve achar outro termo e pesquisá-lo.
01:50
Now in the old days, that meant getting out a volume
40
95051
2165
01:53
and browsing through it alphabetically,
41
97216
1635
e ir pesquisando em ordem alfabética,
01:54
maybe getting sidetracked,
42
98851
1039
talvez se distraindo,
01:55
that was fun.
43
99890
705
isso era legal.
01:56
Nowadays there are hundreds of links to choose from.
44
100595
2631
01:59
I can go literally anywhere in the world,
45
103226
1952
Posso ir, literalmente, a qualquer lugar no mundo,
02:01
I think since I was already in Ecuador,
46
105178
1729
penso, já que eu estava no Equador,
02:02
I just decided to click on the word "tropical."
47
106907
2711
decidi clicar na palavra "tropical".
02:05
That took me to this wet and warm band of the tropics
48
109618
5241
02:10
that encircles the Earth.
49
114859
1185
que circunda a Terra.
02:11
Now that's the Tropic of Cancer in the north
50
116044
2461
02:14
and the Tropic of Capricorn in the south,
51
118505
1513
e o Trópico de Capricórnio ao sul,
02:15
that much I knew,
52
120018
808
até aí eu sabia,
02:16
but I was surprised to learn this little fact:
53
120826
2201
02:18
Those are not cartographers' lines,
54
123027
2266
Essas não são linhas cartográficas,
02:21
like latitude or the borders between nations,
55
125293
3605
02:24
they are astronomical phenomena caused by the Earth's tilt,
56
128898
2731
02:27
and they change.
57
131629
1605
e elas mudam.
02:29
They move; they go up, they go down.
58
133234
2650
02:31
In fact, for years, the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn
59
135884
3199
02:34
have been steadily drifting towards the equator
60
139083
2640
02:37
at the rate of about 15 meters per year,
61
141723
2497
em aproximadamente 15 metros ao ano,
02:40
and nobody told me that.
62
144220
1166
e ninguém me disse isso.
02:41
I didn't know it.
63
145386
824
Eu não sabia.
02:42
Chimborazo!
64
146210
1418
Chimborazo!
02:43
So to keep the game going, I just have to find another term and look that one up.
65
147628
5776
02:49
Since I'm already in the tropics, I chose "Tropical rainforest."
66
153404
3799
02:53
Famous for its diversity, human diversity.
67
157203
2283
Famosa por sua diversidade, diversidade humana.
02:55
There are still dozens and dozens of uncontacted tribes living on this planet.
68
159486
5526
03:00
They're all over the globe, but virtually all of them live in tropical rainforests.
69
165012
4478
03:05
This is the only place you can go nowadays and not get "friended."
70
169490
4977
03:10
The link that I clicked on here was exotic in the beginning and then absolutely mysterious at the very end.
71
174467
8865
03:19
It mentioned leopards and ring-tailed coatis and poison dart frogs and boa constrictors and then
72
183332
6760
Ele mencionava leopardos e quatis de cauda anelada, sapos flecha de veneno, jibóias constritoras e
03:25
coleoptera,
73
190092
1935
escaravelhos,
03:27
which turn out to be beetles.
74
192027
3239
que na verdade são besouros.
03:31
Now I clicked on this on purpose,
75
195266
2224
Agora, cliquei nesse aqui de propósito,
03:33
but if I'd somehow gotten here by mistake,
76
197490
1554
03:34
it does remind me, for the band, see "The Beatles,"
77
199044
2097
ele me alertaria, para a banda, veja "The Beatles",
03:37
for the car see "Volkswagon Beetle,"
78
201141
1606
para o carro, veja "Fusca",
03:38
but I am here for beetle beetles.
79
202747
2737
mas estou aqui pelo próprio besouro.
03:41
This is the most successful order on the planet by far.
80
205484
3870
03:45
Something between 20 and 25 percent of all life forms on the planet,
81
209354
4250
Algo entre 20 e 25 por cento de todas as formas de vida do planeta,
03:49
including plants, are beetles.
82
213604
1806
incluindo plantas, são besouros.
03:51
That means the next time you are in the grocery store,
83
215410
2183
03:53
take a look at the four people ahead of you in line.
84
217593
2202
03:55
Statistically, one of you is a beetle.
85
219795
3017
Estatisticamente, uma é um besouro.
03:58
And if it is you, you are astonishingly well adapted.
86
222812
5598
04:04
There are scavenger beetles that pick the skin and flesh off of bones in museums.
87
228410
5033
04:09
There are predator beetles, that attack other insects
88
233443
3081
Há besouros predadores que atacam outros insetos
04:12
and still look pretty cute to us.
89
236524
1783
e ainda assim, nos parecem bem bonitinhos.
04:14
There are beetles that roll little balls of dung
90
238307
3504
04:17
great distances across the desert floor to feed to their hatchlings.
91
241811
3295
04:21
This reminded the ancient Egyptians of their god Khepri,
92
245106
3784
04:24
who renews the ball of the sun every morning,
93
248890
3314
que renovava a bola do sol todas as manhãs,
04:28
which is how that dung-rolling scarab
94
252204
2023
04:30
became that sacred scarab on the breastplate of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun.
95
254227
5368
se tornou o escaravelho sagrado no peitoral do faraó Tutancâmon.
04:35
Beetles, I was reminded, have the most romantic flirtation in the animal kingdom.
96
259595
5928
Besouros, me lembraram, têm o flerte mais romântico do reino animal.
04:41
Fireflies are not flies, fireflies are beetles.
97
265523
2583
Vagalumes não são moscas, são besouros.
04:44
Fireflies are coleoptera, and coleoptera communicate in other ways as well.
98
268106
5312
04:49
Like my next link:
99
273418
1376
Como o meu próximo link:
04:50
The chemical language of pheromones.
100
274794
2939
A linguagem química dos feromônios.
04:53
Now the pheromone page took me to a video of a sea urchin having sex.
101
277733
6053
04:59
Yeah.
102
283786
3680
É.
05:03
(Laughter)
103
287466
3088
(Risos)
05:06
And the link to aphrodisiac.
104
290554
2072
E ao link de afrodisíaco.
05:08
Now that's something that increases sexual desire,
105
292626
1664
05:10
possibly chocolate.
106
294290
2201
chocolate possivelmente.
05:12
There is a compound in chocolate called phenethylamine
107
296491
3503
Há um componente no chocolate chamado fenetilamina
05:15
that might be an aphrodisiac.
108
299994
1370
que pode ser afrodisíaco.
05:17
But as the article mentions,
109
301364
2255
Mas como o artigo menciona,
05:19
because of enzyme breakdown,
110
303619
1215
por causa da quebra de enzimas,
05:20
it's unlikely that phenethylamine will reach your brain if taken orally.
111
304834
4170
05:24
So those of you who only eat your chocolate, you might have to experiment.
112
309004
3110
Assim, quem apenas come o chocolate, talvez tenha que experimentar.
05:28
The link I clicked on here,
113
312114
3810
O link que cliquei aqui,
05:31
"sympathetic magic," mostly because I understand what both of those words mean.
114
315924
5199
"magia simpática" principalmente porque eu entendo o que ambas palavras significam.
05:37
But not when they're together like that.
115
321123
2152
Mas não quando estão juntas assim.
05:39
I do like sympathy. I do like magic.
116
323275
2991
Eu gosto de simpatia, gosto de magia.
05:42
So when I click on "sympathetic magic,"
117
326266
1345
Aí quando clico em "magia simpática",
05:43
I get sympathetic magic and voodoo dolls.
118
327611
4805
eu acho magia simpática e bonecos vodus.
05:48
This is the boy in me getting lucky again.
119
332416
2148
05:50
Sympathetic magic is imitation.
120
334564
2519
Magia simpática é imitação.
05:52
If you imitate something, maybe you can have an effect on it.
121
337083
2407
05:55
That's the idea behind voodoo dolls, and possibly also cave paintings.
122
339490
4434
05:59
The link to cave paintings takes me to some of the oldest art known to humankind.
123
343924
5080
06:04
I would love to see Google maps inside some of these caves.
124
349004
2007
06:06
We've got tens-of-thousands-years-old artwork.
125
351011
3496
Temos trabalhos de arte de dezenas de milhares de anos.
06:10
Common themes around the globe include large wild animals and tracings of human hands,
126
354507
4999
06:15
usually the left hand.
127
359506
2321
em geral, a esquerda.
06:17
We have been a dominantly right-handed tribe for millenia,
128
361827
4463
06:22
so even though I don't know why a paleolithic person would trace his hand
129
366290
5336
06:27
or blow pigment on it from a tube,
130
371626
1986
ou derramaria um tubo de tinta nela,
06:29
I can easily picture how he did it.
131
373612
2592
posso facilmente imaginar como ela fez isso.
06:32
And I really don't think it's that different form our own little dominant hand avatar
132
376204
4502
06:36
right there that I'm going to use now to click on the term for "hand,"
133
380706
3332
06:39
go to the page for "hand," where I found the most fun and possibly embarrassing bit of trivia
134
384038
6292
06:46
I've found in a long time. It's simply this:
135
390330
2034
em um longo tempo. É simplesmente isso:
06:48
The back of the hand is formally called the opisthenar.
136
392364
4182
06:52
Now that's embarrassing, because up until now,
137
396546
3673
Bom, isso é embaraçoso, porque até agora,
06:56
every time I've said, "I know it like the back of my hand,"
138
400219
3200
06:59
I've really been saying, "I'm totally familiar with that,
139
403419

queria dizer, " Sou totalmente familiarizado com isso,
07:01
I just don't know it's freaking name, right?"
140
405778
2586
07:04
And the link I clicked on here,
141
408364
3654
E o link que cliquei aqui,
07:07
well, lemurs, monkeys and chimpanzees have the little opisthenar.
142
412018
4152
bom, lêmures, macacos e chimpanzés têm o opistenar pequeno.
07:12
I click on chimpanzee, and I get our closest genetic relative.
143
416170
4250
07:16
Pan troglodytes, the name we give him, means "cave dweller."
144
420420
3991
07:20
He doesn't.
145
424411
1504
Ele não mora.
07:21
He lives in rainforests and savannas.
146
425915
1824
Ele mora nas florestas tropicais e savanas.
07:23
It's just that we're always thinking of this guy as lagging behind us,
147
427739
3207
07:26
evolutionarily or somehow uncannily creeping up on us,
148
430946
3064
07:29
and in some cases, he gets places before us.
149
434010
3674
07:33
Like my next link, the almost irresistible link, Ham the Astrochimp.
150
437684
5222
07:38
I click on him, and I really thought he was going to bring me full circle twice, in fact.
151
442906
4178
07:42
He's born in Cameroon,
152
447084
1200
Ele nasceu em Camarões,
07:44
which is smack in the middle of my tropics map,
153
448284
3760
07:47
and more specifically his skeleton wound up in the Smithsonian museum getting picked clean by beetles.
154
452044

07:54
In between those two landmarks in Ham's life,
155
458266
2953
07:57
he flew into space.
156
461219
2536
ele foi ao espaço.
07:59
He experienced weightlessness and re-entry
157
463755
3237
Ele experimentou a falta de peso e a reentrada

months before the first human being to do it,
158

08:05
Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
159
469563
2864
o cosmonauta soviético Yuri Gagarin.
08:08
When I click on Yuri Gagarin's page,
160
472427
2152
Quando clico na página de Yuri Gagarin,
08:10
I get this guy who was surprisingly short in stature,
161
474579
2919
acho esse cara de estatura surpreendentemente baixa,
08:13
huge in heroism.
162
477498
1537
grande em heroísmo.
08:14
Top estimates, Soviet estimates, put this guy at 1.65 meters,
163
479035
4343
08:19
that is less than five and a half feet tall max,
164
483378
3001
o que é menos de 5.5 pés,
08:22
possibly because he was malnourished as a child.
165
486379
2806
possivelmente porque foi mal nutrido quando criança.
08:25
Germans occupied Russia.
166
489185
2545
Os Alemães ocuparam a Rússia.
08:27
A Nazi officer took over the Gagarin household,
167
491730
3097
08:30
and he and his family built and lived in a mud hut.
168
494827
2804
08:33
Years later, the boy from that cramped mud hut
169
497631
3547
Anos depois, o garoto daquela cabana estreita
08:37
would grow up to be the man in that cramped capsule
170
501178
3506
08:40
on the tip of a rocket
171
504684
1614
na ponta do foguete
08:42
who volunteered to be launched into outer space,
172
506298
3488
08:45
the first one of any of us to really physically leave this planet.
173
509786
4352
08:50
And he didn't just leave it,
174
514138
1348
E ele não apenas deixou,
08:51
he circled it once.
175
515486
2525
ele o circulou uma vez.
08:53
Fifty years later, as a tribute,
176
518011
2226
50 anos depois, como um tributo,
08:56
the International Space Station, which is still up there tonight,
177
520237
3927
09:00
synced its orbit with Gagarin's orbit,
178
524164
4080
sincronizou sua órbita com a de Gagarin,
09:04
at the exact same time of day,
179
528244
1166
exatamente na mesma hora do dia,
09:05
and filmed it,
180
529410
1560
e filmou,
09:06
so you can go online and you can watch over 100 minutes
181
530970
3584
09:10
of what must have been an absolutely mesmerizing ride,
182
534554
3509
09:13
possibly a lonely one,
183
538063
1141
possivelmente solitária,
09:15
the first person to ever see such a thing.
184
539204
2280
a primeira pessoa a ver tal coisa.
09:17
And then when you've had your fill of that,
185
541484
1423
Daí quando estiver cheio disso,
09:18
you can click on one more link.
186
542907
2617
você pode clicar em mais um link.
09:21
You can come back to Earth.
187
545524
1342
Pode voltar à Terra.
09:22
You return to where you started.
188
546866
2161
Você volta ao início.
09:24
You can finish your game.
189
549027
2217
Pode terminar o jogo.
09:27
You just need to find one more fact that you didn't know.
190
551244
3590
09:30
And for me, I quickly landed on this one:
191
554834
2480
E eu? Rapidamente cheguei nesse:
09:33
The Earth has a tolerance of about .17 percent from the reference spheroid,
192
557314
5016
09:38
which is less than the .22 percent allowed in billiard balls.
193
562330
3969
09:42
This is the kind of fact I would have loved as a boy.
194
566299
2432
09:44
I found it myself.
195
568731
1247
Eu mesmo o achei.
09:45
It's got some math that I can do.
196
569978
2275
Têm algumas contas que eu posso fazer.
09:48
I'm pretty sure my dad doesn't know it.
197
572253
2125
Tenho certeza que meu pai não sabe.
09:50
What this means is that if you could shrink the Earth to the size of a billiard ball,
198
574378
5489
09:55
if you could take planet Earth, with all its mountain tops and caves
199
579867
6017
10:01
and rainforests, astronauts and uncontacted tribes and chimpanzees, voodoo dolls,
200
585884
4676
florestas, astronautas, tribos incontáveis, chimpanzés, bonecos de vodu,
10:06
fireflies, chocolate, sea creatures making love in the deep blue sea,
201
590560
5524
vagalumes, chocolates, criaturas marítimas fazendo amor no profundo mar azul,
10:11
you just shrink that to the size of a billiard ball,
202
596084
3201
10:15
it would be as smooth as a billiard ball,
203
599285
3893
10:19
presumably a billiard ball with a slight bulge around the middle.
204
603178
4617
10:23
That's pretty cool.
205
607795
2791
Isso é muito legal.
10:26
I didn't know that.
206
610586
1944
Eu não sabia isso.
10:28
Chimborazo!
207
612530
2225
Chimborazo!
10:30
Thank you.
208
614755
889
Obrigado.
