05:33
off InishowenInishowen Peninsula半岛.
135
318000
2000
05:35
Half the challenge挑战 is to get access访问, is to be in the right place地点 at the right time.
136
320000
3000
05:38
But it's a very simple简单 and easy简单 technique技术.
137
323000
2000
05:40
I'll show显示 you what they look like.
138
325000
2000
05:42
We use a pole camera相机 on the boat
139
327000
2000
05:44
to actually其实 film电影 shark鲨鱼.
140
329000
2000
05:46
One is to try and work out the gender性别 of the shark鲨鱼.
141
331000
2000
05:48
We also deployed部署 a couple一对 of satellite卫星 tags标签, so we did use hi-tech高科技 stuff东东 as well.
142
333000
3000
05:51
These are archival档案 tags标签.
143
336000
2000
05:53
So what they do is they store商店 the data数据.
144
338000
2000
05:55
A satellite卫星 tag标签 only works作品 when the air空气 is clear明确 of the water
145
340000
2000
05:57
and can send发送 a signal信号 to the satellite卫星.
146
342000
2000
05:59
And of course课程, sharks鲨鱼, fish, are underwater水下 most of the time.
147
344000
3000
06:02
So this tag标签 actually其实 works作品 out the locations地点 of shark鲨鱼
148
347000
3000
06:05
depending根据 on the timing定时 and the setting设置 of the sun太阳,
149
350000
3000
06:08
plus water temperature温度 and depth深度.
150
353000
2000
06:10
And you have to kind of reconstruct重建 the path路径.
151
355000
3000
06:13
What happens发生 is that you set the tag标签 to detach分离 from the shark鲨鱼 after a fixed固定 period,
152
358000
3000
06:16
in this case案件 it was eight months个月,
153
361000
2000
06:18
and literally按照字面 to the day the tag标签 popped膨化 off, drifted漂流 up, said hello你好 to the satellite卫星
154
363000
4000
06:22
and sent发送, not all the data数据, but enough足够 data数据 for us to use.
155
367000
3000
06:25
And this is the only way to really work out
156
370000
2000
06:27
the behavior行为 and the movements运动 when they're under water.
157
372000
3000
06:30
And here's这里的 a couple一对 of maps地图 that we've我们已经 doneDONE.
158
375000
3000
06:33
That one, you can see that we tagged标记 both off Kerry黑色的小乳牛.
159
378000
3000
06:36
And basically基本上 it spent花费 all its time, the last eight months个月, in Irish爱尔兰的 waters水域.
160
381000
3000
06:39
Christmas圣诞 day it was out on the shelf edge边缘.
161
384000
2000
06:41
And here's这里的 one that we haven't没有 ground-truthed地面truthed it yet然而
162
386000
2000
06:43
with sea surface表面 temperature温度 and water depth深度,
163
388000
2000
06:45
but again, the second第二 shark鲨鱼 kind of spent花费 most of its time
164
390000
2000
06:47
in and around the Irish爱尔兰的 Sea.
165
392000
2000
06:49
Colleagues同事 from the Isle小岛 of Man last year
166
394000
2000
06:53
that went from the Isle小岛 of Man all the way out to Nova新星 Scotia斯科舍省 in about 90 days.
168
398000
3000
06:56
That's nine and a half thousand kilometers公里. We never thought that happened发生.
169
401000
3000
06:59
Another另一个 colleague同事 in the States状态
170
404000
2000
07:01
tagged标记 about 20 sharks鲨鱼 off Massachusetts马萨诸塞, and his tags标签 didn't really work.
171
406000
3000
07:04
All he knows知道 is where he tagged标记 them
172
409000
2000
07:06
and he knows知道 where they popped膨化 off.
173
411000
2000
07:08
And his tags标签 popped膨化 off in the Caribbean加勒比
174
413000
2000
07:10
and even in Brazil巴西.
175
415000
2000
07:12
And we thought that basking sharks鲨鱼 were temperate适度的 animals动物
176
417000
2000
07:14
and only lived生活 in our latitude纬度.
177
419000
2000
07:16
But in actual实际 fact事实, they're obviously明显 crossing路口 the Equator赤道 as well.
178
421000
3000
07:19
So very simple简单 things like that,
179
424000
2000
07:21
we're trying to learn学习 about basking sharks鲨鱼.
180
426000
2000
07:23
One thing that I think
181
428000
3000
07:26
is a very surprising奇怪 and strange奇怪 thing
182
431000
2000
07:28
is just how low the genetic遗传 diversity多样 of sharks鲨鱼 are.
183
433000
3000
07:31
Now I'm not a geneticist遗传学家, so I'm not going to pretend假装 to understand理解 the genetics遗传学.
184
436000
3000
07:34
And that's why it's great to have collaboration合作.
185
439000
3000
07:37
Whereas I'm a field领域 person,
186
442000
2000
07:39
I get panic恐慌 attacks攻击 if I have to spend too many许多 hours小时
187
444000
2000
07:41
in a lab实验室 with a white白色 coat涂层 on -- take me away.
188
446000
3000
07:44
So we can work with geneticists遗传学家 who understand理解 that.
189
449000
3000
07:47
So when they looked看着 at the genetics遗传学 of basking sharks鲨鱼,
190
452000
2000
07:49
they found发现 that the diversity多样 was incredibly令人难以置信 low.
191
454000
3000
07:52
If you look at the first line线 really,
192
457000
2000
07:54
you can see that all these different不同 shark鲨鱼 species种类 are all quite相当 similar类似.
193
459000
3000
07:57
I think this means手段 basically基本上 that they're all sharks鲨鱼
194
462000
2000
07:59
and they've他们已经 come from a common共同 ancestry祖先.
195
464000
2000
08:01
If you look at nucleotide核苷酸 diversity多样,
196
466000
3000
08:04
which哪一个 is more genetics遗传学 that are passed通过 on through通过 parents父母,
197
469000
3000
08:07
you can see that basking sharks鲨鱼, if you look at the first study研究,
198
472000
3000
08:10
was an order订购 of magnitude大小 less diversity多样
199
475000
2000
08:12
than other shark鲨鱼 species种类.
200
477000
2000
08:14
And you see that this work was doneDONE in 2006.
201
479000
2000
08:16
Before 2006, we had no idea理念 of the genetic遗传 variability变化性 of basking sharks鲨鱼.
202
481000
3000
08:19
We had no idea理念, did they distinguish区分 into different不同 populations人群?
203
484000
3000
08:22
Were there subpopulations
204
487000
2000
08:24
And of course课程, that's very important重要 if you want to know
205
489000
2000
08:26
what the population人口 size尺寸 is and the status状态 of the animals动物.
206
491000
2000
08:29
So Les莱斯 Noble高贵 in Aberdeen阿伯丁
207
494000
2000
08:31
kind of found发现 this a bit unbelievable难以置信的 really.
208
496000
2000
08:33
So he did another另一个 study研究
209
498000
3000
08:39
which哪一个 are much more expensive昂贵, much more time consuming消费,
211
504000
3000
08:42
and, to his surprise, came来了 up with almost几乎 identical相同 results结果.
212
507000
3000
08:45
So it does seem似乎 to be
213
510000
2000
08:47
that basking sharks鲨鱼, for some reason原因, have incredibly令人难以置信 low diversity多样.
214
512000
3000
08:50
And it's thought maybe it was a bottleneck瓶颈, a genetic遗传 bottleneck瓶颈
215
515000
2000
08:52
thought to be 12,000 years年份 ago,
216
517000
2000
08:54
and this has caused造成 a very low diversity多样.
217
519000
3000
08:57
And yet然而, if you look at whale sharks鲨鱼,
218
522000
2000
08:59
which哪一个 is the other plankton浮游生物 eating large shark鲨鱼,
219
524000
3000
09:02
its diversity多样 is much greater更大.
220
527000
2000
09:04
So it doesn't really make sense at all.
221
529000
2000
09:06
They found发现 that there was no genetic遗传 differentiation区别
222
531000
2000
09:08
between之间 any of the world's世界 oceans海洋 of basking sharks鲨鱼.
223
533000
3000
09:11
So even though虽然 basking sharks鲨鱼 are found发现 throughout始终 the world世界,
224
536000
2000
09:13
you couldn't不能 tell the difference区别 genetically基因
225
538000
2000
09:15
from one from the Pacific和平的, the Atlantic大西洋, New Zealand新西兰, or from Ireland爱尔兰, South Africa非洲.
226
540000
3000
09:18
They all basically基本上 seem似乎 the same相同.
227
543000
2000
09:20
But again, it's kind of surprising奇怪. You wouldn't不会 really expect期望 that.
228
545000
3000
09:23
I don't understand理解 this. I don't pretend假装 to understand理解 this.
229
548000
2000
09:25
And I suspect疑似 most geneticists遗传学家 don't understand理解 it either,
230
550000
2000
09:27
but they produce生产 the numbers数字.
231
552000
2000
09:29
So you can actually其实 estimate估计 the population人口 size尺寸
232
554000
2000
09:31
based基于 on the diversity多样 of the genetics遗传学.
233
556000
2000
09:33
And Rus罗斯 HoelzelHoelzel came来了 up with an effective有效 population人口 size尺寸:
234
558000
3000
Rus Hoelzel
09:36
8,200 animals动物.
235
561000
2000
8200条
09:38
That's it.
236
563000
2000
09:40
8,000 animals动物 in the world世界.
237
565000
2000
09:42
You're thinking思维, "That's just ridiculous荒谬. No way."
238
567000
2000
09:44
So Les莱斯 did a finer study研究
239
569000
2000
09:46
and he found发现 out it came来了 out about 9,000.
240
571000
2000
09:48
And using运用 different不同 microsatellites微卫星 gave the different不同 results结果.
241
573000
3000
09:51
But the average平均 of all these studies学习 came来了 out --
242
576000
3000
09:54
the mean is about 5,000,
243
579000
2000
09:56
which哪一个 I personally亲自 don't believe,
244
581000
2000
09:58
but then I am a skeptic怀疑论者.
245
583000
2000
10:00
But even if you toss折腾 a few少数 numbers数字 around,
246
585000
2000
10:02
you're probably大概 talking of an effective有效 population人口 of about 20,000 animals动物.
247
587000
3000
10:05
Do you remember记得 how many许多 they killed杀害 off Achill阿基尔 there
248
590000
2000
10:07
in the 70s and the 50s?
249
592000
3000
10:10
So what it tells告诉 us actually其实
250
595000
2000
10:12
is that there's actually其实 a risk风险 of extinction灭绝 of this species种类
251
597000
3000
10:15
because its population人口 is so small.
252
600000
2000
10:17
In fact事实, of those 20,000, 8,000 were thought to be females女性.
253
602000
3000
10:20
There's only 8,000 basking shark鲨鱼 females女性 in the world世界?
254
605000
3000
10:23
I don't know. I don't believe it.
255
608000
2000
10:25
The problem问题 with this
256
610000
2000
10:27
is they were constrained受限 with samples样本.
257
612000
2000
10:29
They didn't get enough足够 samples样本
258
614000
2000
10:31
to really explore探索 the genetics遗传学
259
616000
2000
10:33
in enough足够 detail详情.
260
618000
2000
10:35
So where do you get samples样本 from
261
620000
3000
10:38
for your genetic遗传 analysis分析?
262
623000
2000
10:40
Well one obvious明显 source资源 is dead sharks鲨鱼,
263
625000
2000
10:42
Dead sharks鲨鱼 washed up.
264
627000
2000
10:44
We might威力 get two or three dead sharks鲨鱼 washed up in Ireland爱尔兰 a year,
265
629000
3000
10:47
if we're kind of lucky幸运.
266
632000
2000
10:49
Another另一个 source资源 would be fisheries渔业 bycatch误捕.
267
634000
2000
10:51
We were getting得到 quite相当 a few少数 caught抓住 in surface表面 drift漂移 nets.
268
636000
3000
10:54
That's banned取缔 now, and that'll那会 be good news新闻 for the sharks鲨鱼.
269
639000
3000
10:57
And some are caught抓住 in nets, in trawls拖网.
270
642000
2000
10:59
This is a shark鲨鱼 that was actually其实 landed登陆 in Howth霍斯 just before Christmas圣诞,
271
644000
3000
11:02
illegally非法, because you're not allowed允许 to do that under E.U. law,
272
647000
3000
11:05
and was actually其实 sold出售 for eight euros欧元 a kilo公斤 as shark鲨鱼 steak牛扒.
273
650000
3000
11:08
They even put a recipe食谱 up on the wall, until直到 they were told this was illegal非法.
274
653000
3000
11:11
And they actually其实 did get a fine for that.
275
656000
3000
11:14
So if you look at all those studies学习 I showed显示 you,
276
659000
2000
11:16
the total number of samples样本 worldwide全世界
277
661000
3000
11:19
is 86 at present当下.
278
664000
2000
11:21
So it's very important重要 work,
279
666000
2000
11:23
and they can ask some really good questions问题,
280
668000
2000
11:25
and they can tell us about population人口 size尺寸
281
670000
2000
11:27
and subpopulations亚群 and structure结构体,
282
672000
3000
11:30
but they're constrained受限 by lack缺乏 of samples样本.
283
675000
3000
11:33
Now when we were out tagging标记 our sharks鲨鱼,
284
678000
2000
11:35
this is how we tagged标记 them on the front面前 of a RIB肋骨 -- get in there fast快速 --
285
680000
3000
11:38
occasionally偶尔 the sharks鲨鱼 do react应对.
286
683000
2000
11:40
And on one occasion场合 when we were up in Malin马林 Head up in Donegal多尼戈尔,
287
685000
3000
11:43
a shark鲨鱼 smacked轰出 the side of the boat with his tail尾巴,
288
688000
3000
11:46
more, I think, in startle惊吓 to the fact事实 that a boat came来了 near it,
289
691000
3000
11:49
rather than the tag标签 going in.
290
694000
2000
11:51
And that was fine. We got wet湿. No problem问题.
291
696000
3000
11:54
And then when myself and Emmett
292
699000
2000
11:56
got back to Malin马林 Head, to the pier码头,
293
701000
2000
11:58
I noticed注意到 some black黑色 slime粘液 on the front面前 of the boat.
294
703000
3000
12:01
And I remembered记得 -- I used to spend a lot of time out on commercial广告 fishing钓鱼 boats --
295
706000
2000
12:03
I remember记得 fishermen渔民 telling告诉 me they can always tell
296
708000
2000
12:05
when a basking shark's鲨鱼 been caught抓住 in the net
297
710000
2000
12:07
because it leaves树叶 this black黑色 slime粘液 behind背后.
298
712000
2000
12:09
So I was thinking思维 that must必须 have come from the shark鲨鱼.
299
714000
2000
12:11
Now we had an interest利益
300
716000
2000
12:13
in getting得到 tissue组织 samples样本 for genetics遗传学
301
718000
2000
12:15
because we knew知道 they were very valuable有价值.
302
720000
2000
12:17
And we would use conventional常规 methods方法 --
303
722000
2000
12:19
I have a crossbow, you see the crossbow in my hand there,
304
724000
2000
12:21
which哪一个 we use to sample样品 whales鲸鱼 and dolphins海豚 for genetic遗传 studies学习 as well.
305
726000
3000
12:24
So I tried试着 that, I tried试着 many许多 techniques技术.
306
729000
2000
12:26
All it was doing was breaking破坏 my arrows箭头
307
731000
2000
12:28
because the shark鲨鱼 skin皮肤 is just so strong强大.
308
733000
2000
12:30
There was no way we were going to get a sample样品 from that.
309
735000
2000
12:32
So that wasn't going to work.
310
737000
3000
12:35
So when I saw the black黑色 slime粘液 on the bow of the boat,
311
740000
3000
12:38
I thought, "If you take what you're given特定 in this world世界 ..."
312
743000
3000
12:41
So I scraped it off.
313
746000
2000
12:43
And I had a little tube with alcohol in it to send发送 to the geneticists遗传学家.
314
748000
3000
12:46
So I scraped the slime粘液 off and I sent发送 it off to Aberdeen阿伯丁.
315
751000
2000
12:48
And I said, "You might威力 try that."
316
753000
2000
12:50
And they satSAT on it for months个月 actually其实.
317
755000
2000
12:52
It was only because we had a conference会议 on the Isle小岛 of Man.
318
757000
2000
12:54
But I kept不停 emailing电子邮件, saying,
319
759000
2000
12:56
"Have you had a chance机会 to look at my slime粘液 yet然而?"
320
761000
2000
12:58
And he was like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:00
Anyway无论如何 he thought he'd他会 better do it,
322
765000
2000
13:02
because I never met会见 him before
323
767000
2000
13:04
and he might威力 lose失去 face面对 if he hadn't有没有 doneDONE the thing I sent发送 him.
324
769000
2000
13:06
And he was amazed吃惊 that they actually其实 got DNA脱氧核糖核酸 from the slime粘液.
325
771000
3000
13:09
And they amplified放大 it and they tested测试 it
326
774000
2000
13:11
and they found发现, yes, this was actually其实 basking shark鲨鱼 DNA脱氧核糖核酸,
327
776000
2000
13:13
which哪一个 was got from the slime粘液.
328
778000
3000
13:16
And so he was all very excited
329
781000
2000
13:18
It became成为 known已知 as Simon's西蒙的 shark鲨鱼 slime粘液.
330
783000
3000
13:21
And I thought, "Hey, you know, I can build建立 on this."
331
786000
3000
13:24
So we thought, okay, we're going to try to get out
332
789000
2000
13:26
and get some slime粘液.
333
791000
2000
13:28
So having spent花费 three and a half thousand on satellite卫星 tags标签,
334
793000
4000
13:34
I then thought I'd invest投资 7.95 -- the price价钱 is still on it --
335
799000
3000
13:37
in my local本地 hardware硬件 store商店 in Kilrush基尔拉什
336
802000
3000
13:40
for a mop拖把 handle处理
337
805000
2000
13:42
and even less money on some oven烤箱 cleaners清洁工.
338
807000
3000
13:45
And I wrapped包裹 the oven烤箱 cleaner清洁器 around the end结束 of the mop拖把 handle处理
339
810000
3000
13:48
and was desperate殊死, desperate殊死
340
813000
2000
13:50
to have an opportunity机会
341
815000
3000
13:53
to get some sharks鲨鱼.
342
818000
2000
13:55
Now this was into August八月 now,
343
820000
2000
13:57
and normally一般 sharks鲨鱼 peak at June六月, July七月.
344
822000
2000
13:59
And you rarely很少 see them.
345
824000
2000
14:01
You can only rarely很少 be in the right place地点 to find sharks鲨鱼 into August八月.
346
826000
3000
14:04
So we were desperate
347
829000
2000
14:06
So we rushed out to Blasket布拉斯基特 as soon不久 as we heard听说 there were sharks鲨鱼 there
348
831000
3000
14:09
and managed管理 to find some sharks鲨鱼.
349
834000
2000
14:11
So by just rubbing the mop拖把 handle处理 down the shark鲨鱼
350
836000
2000
14:13
as it swam under the boat --
351
838000
2000
14:15
you see, here's这里的 a shark鲨鱼 that's running赛跑 under the boat here --
352
840000
2000
14:17
we managed管理 to collect搜集 slime粘液.
353
842000
2000
14:19
And here it is.
354
844000
2000
在这里
14:21
Look at that lovely可爱, black黑色 shark鲨鱼 slime粘液.
355
846000
3000
14:24
And in about half an hour小时,
356
849000
3000
14:27
we got five samples样本, five individual个人 sharks鲨鱼,
357
852000
3000
14:30
were sampled取样 using运用 Simon's西蒙的 shark鲨鱼 slime粘液 sampling采样 system系统.
358
855000
3000
14:33
(Laughter
359
858000
2000
14:35
(Applause
360
860000
5000
14:40
I've been working加工 on whales鲸鱼 and dolphins海豚 in Ireland爱尔兰 for 20 years年份 now,
361
865000
3000
14:43
and they're kind of a bit more dramatic戏剧性.
362
868000
2000
14:45
You probably大概 saw the humpback驼背 whale footage镜头
363
870000
2000
14:47
that we got there a month or two ago off County Wexford韦克斯福德.
364
872000
2000
14:49
And you always think you might威力 have some legacy遗产 you can leave离开 the world世界 behind背后.
365
874000
3000
14:52
And I was thinking思维 of humpback驼背 whales鲸鱼 breaching违约
366
877000
2000
14:54
and dolphins海豚.
367
879000
2000
14:56
But hey, sometimes有时 these things are sent发送 to you
368
881000
2000
14:58
and you just have to take them when they come.
369
883000
2000
15:00
So this is possibly或者 going to be my legacy遗产 --
370
885000
2000
15:04
So we got more money this year
372
889000
2000
15:06
to carry携带 on collecting搜集 more and more samples样本.
373
891000
3000
15:09
And one thing that is kind of very useful有用
374
894000
2000
15:11
is that we use a pole cameras相机 -- this is my colleague同事 Joanne乔安妮 with a pole camera相机 --
375
896000
3000
15:14
where you can actually其实 look underneath the shark鲨鱼.
376
899000
2000
15:16
And what you're trying to look at is the males男性 have claspersclaspers,
377
901000
3000
15:19
which哪一个 kind of dangle吊着 out behind背后 the back of the shark鲨鱼.
378
904000
3000
15:22
So you can quite相当 easily容易 tell the gender性别 of the shark鲨鱼.
379
907000
2000
15:24
So if we can tell the gender性别 of the shark鲨鱼
380
909000
2000
15:26
before we sample样品 it,
381
911000
2000
15:28
we can tell the geneticist遗传学家 this was taken采取 from a male or a female.
382
913000
3000
15:31
Because at the moment时刻, they actually其实 have no way genetically基因
383
916000
2000
15:33
of telling告诉 the difference区别 between之间 a male and a female,
384
918000
2000
15:35
which哪一个 I found发现 absolutely绝对 staggering踉跄,
385
920000
2000
15:37
because they don't know what primers引物 to look for.
386
922000
3000
15:40
And being存在 able能够 to tell the gender性别 of a shark鲨鱼
387
925000
2000
15:42
has got very important重要
388
927000
2000
15:44
for things like policing治安 the trade贸易
389
929000
3000
15:47
in basking shark鲨鱼 and other species种类 through通过 societies社会,
390
932000
4000
15:51
because it is illegal非法 to trade贸易 any sharks鲨鱼.
391
936000
2000
15:53
And they are caught抓住 and they are on the market市场.
392
938000
2000
15:55
So as a field领域 biologist生物学家,
393
940000
2000
15:57
you just want to get encounters遭遇 with these animals动物.
394
942000
2000
15:59
You want to learn学习 as much as you can.
395
944000
2000
16:01
They're often经常 quite相当 brief简要. They're often经常 very seasonally季节性 constrained受限.
396
946000
3000
16:04
And you just want to learn学习 as much as you can as soon不久 as you can.
397
949000
3000
16:07
But isn't it fantastic
398
952000
2000
16:09
that you can then offer提供 these samples样本
399
954000
3000
16:12
and opportunities机会 to other disciplines学科, such这样 as geneticists遗传学家,
400
957000
3000
16:15
who can gain获得 so much more from that.
401
960000
3000
16:18
So as I said,
402
963000
2000
16:20
these things are sent发送 to you in strange奇怪 ways方法. Grab them while you can.
403
965000
3000
16:23
I'll take that as my scientific科学 legacy遗产.
404
968000
2000
16:25
Hopefully希望 I might威力 get something a bit more dramatic戏剧性 and romantic浪漫 before I die.
405
970000
3000
16:28
But for the time being存在, thank you for that.
406
973000
3000
16:31
And keep an eye out for sharks
407
976000
2000
16:33
If you're more interested有兴趣, we have a basking shark鲨鱼 website网站 now just set up.
408
978000
3000
16:36
So thank you and thank you for listening.

Simon Berrow - Marine biologist
Simon Berrow is a marine biologist dedicated to studying and preserving the basking shark.

Why you should listen

Born in Ireland, Simon Berrow has travelled the world's oceans studying albatrosses, seals, penguins, sharks, and more. A passionate scientist and lover of Ireland's natural heritage, he founded the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and the Irish Basking Shark Study Group.

He is also the inventor of "Simon's shark slime sampling system" -- a mop handle and oven cleaner -- which has proved to be the most effective way of collecting shark DNA for analysis.

The TEDxTalk was filmed at the Science Gallery in Dublin.
