2000
00:17
but I'm a big fan of the concrete block.
1
2000
2000
00:19
The first concrete blocks were manufactured in 1868
2
4000
3000
00:22
with a very simple idea:
3
7000
2000
00:24
modules made of cement of a fixed measurement
4
9000
3000
00:27
that fit together.
5
12000
2000
00:29
Very quickly concrete blocks became
6
14000
2000
00:31
the most-used construction unit in the world.
7
16000
3000
00:34
They enabled us to to build things that were larger than us,
8
19000
2000
00:36
buildings, bridges,
9
21000
2000
00:38
one brick at a time.
10
23000
2000
00:40
Essentially concrete blocks had become
11
25000
2000
00:42
the building block of our time.
12
27000
3000
00:45
Almost a hundred years later in 1947,
13
30000
2000
00:47
LEGO came up with this.
14
32000
2000
00:49
It was called the Automatic Binding Brick.
15
34000
3000
00:52
And in a few short years,
16
37000
2000
00:54
LEGO bricks took place in every household.
17
39000
3000
00:57
It's estimated that over 400 billion bricks have been produced --
18
42000
3000
01:00
or 75 bricks for every person on the planet.
19
45000
3000
01:03
You don't have to be an engineer
20
48000
2000
01:05
to make beautiful houses, beautiful bridges, beautiful buildings.
21
50000
3000
01:08
LEGO made it accessible.
22
53000
2000
01:10
LEGO has essentially taken the concrete block, the building block of the world,
23
55000
3000
01:13
and made it into the building block
24
58000
2000
01:15
of our imagination.
25
60000
2000
01:17
Meanwhile the exact same year,
26
62000
2000
01:19
at Bell Labs the next revolution was about to be announced,
27
64000
3000
01:22
the next building block.
28
67000
2000
01:24
The transistor was a small plastic unit
29
69000
2000
01:26
that would take us from a world
30
71000
2000
01:28
of static bricks piled on top of each other
31
73000
2000
01:30
to a world where everything was interactive.
32
75000
2000
01:32
Like the concrete block,
33
77000
2000
01:34
the transistor allows you to build
34
79000
2000
01:36
much larger, more complex circuits, one brick at a time.
35
81000
3000
01:39
But there's a main difference:
36
84000
2000
01:41
The transistor was only for experts.
37
86000
2000
01:43
I personally don't accept this,
38
88000
2000
01:45
that the building block of our time
39
90000
2000
01:47
is reserved for experts,
40
92000
2000
01:49
so I decided to change that.
41
94000
3000
01:52
Eight years ago when I was at the Media Lab,
42
97000
2000
01:54
I started exploring this idea
43
99000
2000
01:56
of how to put the power of engineers
44
101000
2000
01:58
in the hands of artists and designers.
45
103000
2000
02:00
A few years ago I started developing littleBits.
46
105000
3000
02:03
Let me show you how they work.
47
108000
3000
02:07
LittleBits are electronic modules
48
112000
3000
02:10
with each one specific function.
49
115000
3000
02:13
They're pre-engineered
50
118000
2000
02:15
to be light, sound,
51
120000
3000
02:18
motors and sensors.
52
123000
2000
02:20
And the best part about it
53
125000
2000
02:22
is they snap together with magnets.
54
127000
3000
02:25
So you can't put them the wrong way.
55
130000
3000
02:28
The bricks are color-coded.
56
133000
2000
02:30
Green is output, blue is power,
57
135000
3000
02:33
pink is input and orange is wire.
58
138000
2000
02:35
So all you need to do is snap a blue to a green
59
140000
3000
02:38
and very quickly you can start making larger circuits.
60
143000
3000
02:41
You put a blue to a green,
61
146000
2000
02:43
you can make light.
62
148000
2000
02:45
You can put a knob in between
63
150000
4000
02:49
and now you've made a little dimmer.
64
154000
3000
02:52
Switch out the knob
65
157000
3000
02:55
for a pulse module,
66
160000
2000
02:57
which is here,
67
162000
3000
03:00
and now you've made a little blinker.
68
165000
4000
03:04
Add this buzzer
69
169000
2000
03:06
for some extra punch
70
171000
2000
03:08
and you've created a noise machine.
71
173000
2000
03:10
I'm going to stop that.
72
175000
2000
03:12
So beyond simple play,
73
177000
3000
03:15
littleBits are actually pretty powerful.
74
180000
2000
03:17
Instead of having to program, to wire, to solder,
75
182000
3000
03:20
littleBits allow you to program
76
185000
2000
03:22
using very simple intuitive gestures.
77
187000
2000
03:24
So to make this blink faster or slower,
78
189000
2000
03:26
you would just turn this knob
79
191000
2000
03:28
and basically make it pulse faster or slower.
80
193000
3000
03:31
The idea behind littleBits
81
196000
2000
03:33
is that it's a growing library.
82
198000
2000
03:35
We want to make every single interaction in the world
83
200000
2000
03:37
into a ready-to-use brick.
84
202000
2000
03:39
Lights, sounds, solar panels, motors --
85
204000
2000
03:41
everything should be accessible.
86
206000
2000
03:43
We've been giving littleBits to kids and seeing them play with them.
87
208000
3000
03:46
And it's been an incredible experience.
88
211000
2000
03:48
The nicest thing is how they start to understand
89
213000
2000
03:50
the electronics around them from everyday
90
215000
2000
03:52
that they don't learn at schools.
91
217000
2000
03:54
For example, how a nightlight works,
92
219000
2000
03:56
or why an elevator door stays open,
93
221000
2000
03:58
or how an iPod responds to touch.
94
223000
3000
04:01
We've also been taking littleBits to design schools.
95
226000
2000
04:03
So for example, we've had designers
96
228000
3000
04:06
with no experience with electronics whatsoever
97
231000
2000
04:08
start to play with littleBits as a material.
98
233000
3000
04:11
Here you see, with felt and paper water bottles,
99
236000
3000
04:14
we have Geordie making ...
100
239000
2000
04:16
(Clanging)
101
241000
2000
04:18
(Buzzing)
102
243000

04:20
A few weeks ago we took littleBits to RISD
103
245000
3000
04:23
and gave them to some designers
104
248000
2000
04:25
with no experience in engineering whatsoever --
105
250000
2000
04:27
just cardboard, wood and paper -- and told them "Make something."
106
252000
3000
04:30
Here's an example of a project they made,
107
255000
2000
04:32
a motion-activated confetti canon ball.
108
257000
3000
04:35
(Laughter)
109
260000
2000
04:37
But wait, this is actually my favorite project.
110
262000
4000
04:41
It's a lobster made of playdough
111
266000
3000
04:46
that's afraid of the dark.
112
271000
2000
04:48
(Laughter)
113
273000
4000
04:52
To these non-engineers, littleBits became another material,
114
277000
3000
04:55
electronics became just another material.
115
280000
2000
04:57
And we want to make this material accessible to everyone.
116
282000
3000
05:00
So littleBits is open-source.
117
285000
2000
05:02
You can go on the website, download all the design files, make them yourself.
118
287000

05:05
We want to encourage a world
119
290000
2000
05:07
of creators, of inventors, of contributors,
120
292000
3000
05:10
because this world that we live in,
121
295000
2000
05:12
this interactive world, is ours.
122
297000
2000
05:14
So go ahead and start inventing.
123
299000
2000
05:16
Thank you.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ayah Bdeir - Engineer and artistAyah Bdeir is an engineer and artist, and is the founder of littleBits and karaj, an experimental art, architecture and technology lab in Beirut.
Why you should listen
Ayah Bdeir is the creator of littleBits, an open source system of preassembled, modular circuits that snap together with magnets – making learning about electronics fun, easy and creative. An engineer, inventor and interactive artist, Ayah received her master’s degree from the MIT Media Lab and undergraduate degrees in computer engineering and sociology from the American University of Beirut. Ayah has taught graduate classes at NYU and Parsons and taught numerous workshops to get non-engineers – particularly young girls – interested in science and technology. She is also the founder of karaj, Beirut’s lab for experimental art, architecture and technology. littleBits was named Best of Toyfair, has won the editor’s Choice award from MAKE magazine, and has been acquired by MoMA for its collection.
