My students and I
work on very tiny robots.

00:16
Now, you can think of these
as robotic versions
1
4209
2217
00:18
of something that you're all
very familiar with: an ant.
2
6426
3590
00:22
We all know that ants
and other insects at this size scale
3
10016
2760
00:24
can do some pretty incredible things.
4
12776
2236
00:27
We've all seen a group of ants,
or some version of that,
5
15012
3185
00:30
carting off your potato chip
at a picnic, for example.
6
18197
4270
00:34
But what are the real challenges
of engineering these ants?
7
22467
3443
00:38
Well, first of all, how do we get
the capabilities of an ant
8
25910
3951
00:42
in a robot at the same size scale?
9
29861
2048
00:44
Well, first we need to figure out
how to make them move
10
31909
2604
00:46
when they're so small.
11
34513
1410
00:48
We need mechanisms like legs
and efficient motors
12
35923
2300
00:50
in order to support that locomotion,
13
38223
1849
00:52
and we need the sensors,
power and control
14
40072
2491
00:54
in order to pull everything together
in a semi-intelligent ant robot.
15
42563
3962
00:58
And finally, to make
these things really functional,
16
46525
2546
01:01
we want a lot of them working together
in order to do bigger things.
17
49071
3948
01:05
So I'll start with mobility.
18
53019
2691
01:07
Insects move around amazingly well.
19
55710
3161
01:11
This video is from UC Berkeley.
20
58871
1688
01:12
It shows a cockroach moving
over incredibly rough terrain
21
60559
2783
01:15
without tipping over,
22
63342
1853
01:17
and it's able to do this because its legs
are a combination of rigid materials,
23
65195
3997
01:21
which is what we traditionally
use to make robots,
24
69192
2353
01:23
and soft materials.
25
71545
1599
01:26
Jumping is another really interesting way
to get around when you're very small.
26
74374
3827
01:30
So these insects store energy in a spring
and release that really quickly
27
78201
4069
01:34
to get the high power they need
to jump out of water, for example.
28
82270
4011
01:38
So one of the big
contributions from my lab
29
86281
3122
01:41
has been to combine
rigid and soft materials
30
89403
2750
01:44
in very, very small mechanisms.
31
92153
2214
01:46
So this jumping mechanism
is about four millimeters on a side,
32
94367
3165
01:49
so really tiny.
33
97532
1688
01:51
The hard material here is silicon,
and the soft material is silicone rubber.
34
99220
3838
01:55
And the basic idea is that
we're going to compress this,
35
103058
2895
01:58
store energy in the springs,
and then release it to jump.
36
105953
2701
02:00
So there's no motors
on board this right now, no power.
37
108654
3383
02:04
This is actuated with a method
that we call in my lab
38
112037
2763
02:07
"graduate student with tweezers."
(Laughter)
39
114800
2672
02:09
So what you'll see in the next video
40
117472
1834
02:11
is this guy doing
amazingly well for its jumps.
41
119306
3027
02:14
So this is Aaron, the graduate student
in question, with the tweezers,
42
122333
3614
02:18
and what you see is this
four-millimeter-sized mechanism
43
125947
2683
02:20
jumping almost 40 centimeters high.
44
128630
2211
02:23
That's almost 100 times its own length.
45
130841
2424
02:25
And it survives, bounces on the table,
46
133265
1956
02:27
it's incredibly robust, and of course
survives quite well until we lose it
47
135221
3514
02:30
because it's very tiny.
48
138735
2626
02:33
Ultimately, though, we want
to add motors to this too,
49
141361
2609
02:36
and we have students in the lab
working on millimeter-sized motors
50
143970
3116
02:39
to eventually integrate onto
small, autonomous robots.
51
147086
3600
02:42
But in order to look at mobility and
locomotion at this size scale to start,
52
150686
3581
02:46
we're cheating and using magnets.
53
154267
1974
02:48
So this shows what would eventually
be part of a micro-robot leg,
54
156241
3076
02:51
and you can see the silicone rubber joints
55
159317
2017
02:53
and there's an embedded magnet
that's being moved around
56
161334
2629
02:56
by an external magnetic field.
57
163963
2303
02:58
So this leads to the robot
that I showed you earlier.
58
166266
2683
03:02
The really interesting thing
that this robot can help us figure out
59
169959
3151
03:05
is how insects move at this scale.
60
173110
2007
03:07
We have a really good model
for how everything
61
175117
2225
03:09
from a cockroach up to an elephant moves.
62
177342
1962
03:11
We all move in this
kind of bouncy way when we run.
63
179304
2924
03:14
But when I'm really small,
the forces between my feet and the ground
64
182228
4285
03:18
are going to affect my locomotion
a lot more than my mass,
65
186513
2775
03:21
which is what causes that bouncy motion.
66
189288
2354
03:23
So this guy doesn't work quite yet,
67
191642
1675
03:25
but we do have slightly larger versions
that do run around.
68
193317
3075
03:28
So this is about a centimeter cubed,
a centimeter on a side, so very tiny,
69
196392
3885
03:32
and we've gotten this to run
about 10 body lengths per second,
70
200277
2902
03:35
so 10 centimeters per second.
71
203179
1386
03:36
It's pretty quick for a little, small guy,
72
204565
2033
03:38
and that's really only limited
by our test setup.
73
206598
2362
03:41
But this gives you some idea
of how it works right now.
74
208960
2647
03:44
We can also make 3D-printed versions
of this that can climb over obstacles,
75
212027
3754
03:47
a lot like the cockroach
that you saw earlier.
76
215781
3499
03:51
But ultimately we want to add
everything onboard the robot.
77
219280
2886
03:54
We want sensing, power, control,
actuation all together,
78
222166
3693
03:58
and not everything
needs to be bio-inspired.
79
225859
2906
04:00
So this robot's about
the size of a Tic Tac.
80
228765
3135
04:04
And in this case, instead of magnets
or muscles to move this around,
81
231900
3949
04:08
we use rockets.
82
235849
2425
04:10
So this is a micro-fabricated
energetic material,
83
238274
2666
04:13
and we can create tiny pixels of this,
84
240940
2599
04:15
and we can put one of these pixels
on the belly of this robot,
85
243539
3787
04:19
and this robot, then, is going to jump
when it senses an increase in light.
86
247326
4396
04:24
So the next video is one of my favorites.
87
252645
1973
04:26
So you have this 300-milligram robot
88
254618
3040
04:29
jumping about eight
centimeters in the air.
89
257658
2406
04:32
It's only four by four
by seven millimeters in size.
90
260064
2910
04:35
And you'll see a big flash
at the beginning
91
262974
2156
04:37
when the energetic is set off,
92
265130
1492
04:38
and the robot tumbling through the air.
93
266622
1908
04:40
So there was that big flash,
94
268530
1609
04:42
and you can see the robot
jumping up through the air.
95
270139
3197
04:45
So there's no tethers on this,
no wires connecting to this.
96
273336
3032
04:48
Everything is onboard,
and it jumped in response
97
276368
2494
04:51
to the student just flicking on
a desk lamp next to it.
98
278862
4381
04:55
So I think you can imagine
all the cool things that we could do
99
283243
3654
04:59
with robots that can run and crawl
and jump and roll at this size scale.
100
286897
4707
05:03
Imagine the rubble that you get after
a natural disaster like an earthquake.
101
291604
3790
05:07
Imagine these small robots
running through that rubble
102
295394
2559
05:10
to look for survivors.
103
297953
2218
05:12
Or imagine a lot of small robots
running around a bridge
104
300171
2956
05:15
in order to inspect it
and make sure it's safe
105
303127
2159
05:17
so you don't get collapses like this,
106
305286
2040
05:19
which happened outside of
Minneapolis in 2007.
107
307326
3907
05:23
Or just imagine what you could do
108
311233
1762
05:25
if you had robots that could
swim through your blood.
109
312995
2523
05:27
Right? "Fantastic Voyage," Isaac Asimov.
110
315518
2333
ဟုတ်ပါတယ်၊ Right? Isaac Asimov ရဲ့
"Fantastic Voyage"
05:30
Or they could operate without having
to cut you open in the first place.
111
317851
4355
05:34
Or we could radically change
the way we build things
112
322206
2730
05:37
if we have our tiny robots
work the same way that termites do,
113
324936
3407
05:40
and they build these incredible
eight-meter-high mounds,
114
328343
2765
05:43
effectively well ventilated
apartment buildings for other termites
115
331108
4088
05:47
in Africa and Australia.
116
335196
2091
05:49
So I think I've given you
some of the possibilities
117
337287
2430
05:51
of what we can do with these small robots.
118
339717
2437
05:54
And we've made some advances so far,
but there's still a long way to go,
119
342154
4407
05:58
and hopefully some of you
can contribute to that destination.
120
346561
2858
06:01
Thanks very much.
121
