ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Joseph DeSimone - Chemist, inventor
The CEO of Carbon3D, Joseph DeSimone has made breakthrough contributions to the field of 3D printing.

Why you should listen

Joseph DeSimone is a scholar, inventor and serial entrepreneur. A longtime professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, he's taken leave to become the CEO at Carbon3D, the Silicon Valley 3D printing company he co-founded in 2013. DeSimone, an innovative polymer chemist, has made breakthrough contributions in fluoropolymer synthesis, colloid science, nano-biomaterials, green chemistry and most recently 3D printing. His company's Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP) suggests a breakthrough way to make 3D parts.

Read the paper in Science. Authors: John R. Tumbleston, David Shirvanyants, , Nikita Ermoshkin, Rima Janusziewicz, Ashley R. Johnson, David Kelly, Kai Chen, Robert Pinschmidt, Jason P. Rolland, Alexander Ermoshkin, Edward T. Samulsk.

DeSimone is one of less than twenty individuals who have been elected to all three branches of the National Academies: Institute of Medicine (2014), National Academy of Sciences (2012) and the National Academy of Engineering (2005), and in 2008 he won the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize for Invention and Innovation. He's the co-founder of several companies, including Micell Technologies, Bioabsorbable Vascular Solutions, Liquidia Technologies and Carbon3D.

Joseph DeSimone: What if 3D printing was 100x faster?

Joe DeSimone: Wat als 3D-printen 100 maal sneller ging?

Filmed:

03:26
Our approachnadering is to use
some standardstandaard- knowledgekennis
57
194702
3251
Onze aanpak vertrekt
03:29
in polymerpolymeer chemistrychemie
58
197953
2600
van standaardkennis uit de polymeerchemie:
03:32
to harnessharnas lightlicht and oxygenzuurstof
to growgroeien partsonderdelen continuouslydoorlopend.
59
200553
6599
licht en zuurstof benutten
om onderdelen continu te laten groeien.
03:39
LightLicht and oxygenzuurstof work in differentverschillend waysmanieren.
60
207152
2947
Licht en zuurstof
werken op verschillende manieren.
03:42
LightLicht can take a resinhars
and convertconverteren it to a solidsolide,
61
210099
3042
Licht kan een hars omzetten
in een vaste stof,
een vloeistof converteren
naar een vaste stof.
03:45
can convertconverteren a liquidvloeistof to a solidsolide.
62
213141
2154
03:47
OxygenZuurstof inhibitsremt that processwerkwijze.
63
215295
3534
Zuurstof remt dat proces.
03:50
So lightlicht and oxygenzuurstof
are polarpolair oppositestegenstellingen from one anothereen ander
64
218829
3251
Zo zijn licht en zuurstof
vanuit chemisch oogpunt
elkaars tegenpolen.
03:54
from a chemicalchemisch pointpunt of viewuitzicht,
65
222080
2508
03:56
and if we can controlcontrole spatiallyruimtelijk
the lightlicht and oxygenzuurstof,
66
224588
3413
Als we licht en zuurstof
ruimtelijk kunnen beheersen
04:00
we could controlcontrole this processwerkwijze.
67
228001
1947
dan kunnen we dit proces sturen.
04:02
And we referverwijzen to this as CLIPCLIP.
[ContinuousContinu LiquidVloeistof InterfaceInterface ProductionProductie.]
68
230288
3451
We noemen dit CLIP.
[Continue Liquid Interface Production.]
04:05
It has threedrie functionalfunctioneel componentscomponenten.
69
233739
1876
Er zijn drie functionele componenten.
04:08
One, it has a reservoirreservoir
that holdshoudt the puddlePlas,
70
236465
3861
Eén: een reservoir met de vloeistof,
04:12
just like the T-T-1000.
71
240326
1879
net als de T-1000.
Aan de onderzijde van het reservoir
zit een speciaal venster.
04:14
At the bottombodem of the reservoirreservoir
is a specialspeciaal windowvenster.
72
242205
2416
04:16
I'll come back to that.
73
244621
1491
Later meer daarover.
04:18
In additiontoevoeging, it has a stagestadium
that will lowerlager into the puddlePlas
74
246112
3780
Daarnaast een plateau
dat in de vloeistof zakt
04:21
and pullTrekken the objectvoorwerp out of the liquidvloeistof.
75
249892
2589
en het voorwerp uit de vloeistof trekt.
04:24
The thirdderde componentbestanddeel
is a digitaldigitaal lightlicht projectionprojectie systemsysteem
76
252481
3804
De derde component
zit onder het reservoir:
04:28
underneathonder the reservoirreservoir,
77
256285
2020
een digitaal lichtprojectiesysteem
04:30
illuminatingverlichtings- with lightlicht
in the ultravioletultraviolet regionregio.
78
258305
3273
met ultraviolet licht.
04:34
Now, the keysleutel is that this windowvenster
in the bottombodem of this reservoirreservoir,
79
262048
3223
De sleutel is dit venster
in de bodem van dit reservoir.
04:37
it's a compositesamengesteld,
it's a very specialspeciaal windowvenster.
80
265271
2879
Het is een composiet,
een zeer speciaal venster.
04:40
It's not only transparenttransparant to lightlicht
but it's permeablepermeabele to oxygenzuurstof.
81
268150
3646
Het laat niet alleen licht,
maar ook zuurstof door.
04:43
It's got characteristicskenmerken
like a contactcontact lenslens.
82
271796
2659
Net als bij een contactlens.
04:47
So we can see how the processwerkwijze workswerken.
83
275435
2281
Zo kunnen we zien hoe het proces werkt.
04:49
You can startbegin to see that
as you lowerlager a stagestadium in there,
84
277716
3414
Als je het plateau laat zakken
04:53
in a traditionaltraditioneel processwerkwijze,
with an oxygen-impermeablezuurstof-ondoordringbare windowvenster,
85
281130
4179
zal je bij een traditioneel proces,
met een venster dat geen zuurstofdoorlaat,
04:57
you make a two-dimensionaltweedimensionale patternpatroon
86
285309
1839
een tweedimensionaal patroon maken
05:00
and you endeinde up gluinglijmen that ontonaar the windowvenster
with a traditionaltraditioneel windowvenster,
87
288008
3362
dat vastgelijmd zit
op het traditionele venster.
05:03
and so in orderbestellen to introducevoorstellen
the nextvolgende layerlaag, you have to separatescheiden it,
88
291370
3552
Om de volgende laag te introduceren,
moet je het eerst losmaken,
05:06
introducevoorstellen newnieuwe resinhars, repositionherpositioneren it,
89
294922
3529
nieuw hars introduceren, herpositioneren,
05:10
and do this processwerkwijze over and over again.
90
298451
2459
en dat telkens weer.
05:13
But with our very specialspeciaal windowvenster,
91
301400
1834
Maar met ons zeer speciale venster
05:15
what we're ablein staat to do is,
with oxygenzuurstof comingkomt eraan throughdoor the bottombodem
92
303234
3329
kunnen we zuurstof
door de bodem laten komen.
05:18
as lightlicht hitstreffers it,
93
306563
1253
Als er licht op valt,
05:21
that oxygenzuurstof inhibitsremt the reactionreactie,
94
309256
2670
verhindert zuurstof de reactie
05:23
and we formformulier a deaddood zonezone.
95
311926
2624
en vormen we een dode zone.
05:26
This deaddood zonezone is on the orderbestellen
of tenstientallen of micronsmicron thickdik,
96
314550
4319
Deze dode zone is
maar enkele tientallen micron dik.
05:30
so that's two or threedrie diametersdiameters
of a redrood bloodbloed cellcel,
97
318869
3227
Ongeveer twee tot drie keer
de dikte van een rode bloedcel.
05:34
right at the windowvenster interfaceinterface
that remainsstoffelijk overschot a liquidvloeistof,
98
322096
2531
Tegen het raam blijft het dus vloeibaar.
05:36
and we pullTrekken this objectvoorwerp up,
99
324627
1950
Dan trekken we het object omhoog.
05:38
and as we talkedgesproken about in a ScienceWetenschap paperpapier,
100
326577
2392
In een artikel in Science legden we uit
05:40
as we changeverandering the oxygenzuurstof contentinhoud,
we can changeverandering the deaddood zonezone thicknessdikte.
101
328969
4713
hoe we door het zuurstofgehalte
te wijzigen,
we de dikte van de dode zone
kunnen wijzigen.
05:45
And so we have a numberaantal of keysleutel variablesvariabelen
that we controlcontrole: oxygenzuurstof contentinhoud,
102
333682
3692
We controleren dus
een aantal belangrijke variabelen:
zuurstofgehalte, licht, lichtintensiteit,
dosis om uit te harden,
05:49
the lightlicht, the lightlicht intensityintensiteit,
the dosedosis to curegenezen,
103
337374
3065
05:52
the viscosityviscositeit, the geometrymeetkunde,
104
340439
1962
viscositeit, geometrie.
05:54
and we use very sophisticatedgeavanceerde softwaresoftware
to controlcontrole this processwerkwijze.
105
342401
3416
We gebruiken zeer geavanceerde software
om dit proces te sturen.
05:58
The resultresultaat is prettymooi staggeringspreiding.
106
346697
2763
Het resultaat is buitengewoon.
06:01
It's 25 to 100 timestijden fastersneller
than traditionaltraditioneel 3D printersprinters,
107
349460
3736
Het gaat 25 tot 100 maal sneller
dan de traditionele 3D-printers.
06:06
whichwelke is game-changingspel-veranderende.
108
354336
1834
Dat is baanbrekend.
06:08
In additiontoevoeging, as our abilityvermogen
to deliverleveren liquidvloeistof to that interfaceinterface,
109
356170
4336
Als we bovendien de vloeistof
sneller naar die interface krijgen,
06:12
we can go 1,000 timestijden fastersneller I believe,
110
360506
3740
dan kunnen we volgens mij
1.000 keer sneller gaan,
06:16
and that in factfeit opensopent up the opportunitykans
for generatingopwekkende a lot of heatwarmte,
111
364246
3557
en dat gaat veel warmte genereren.
06:19
and as a chemicalchemisch engineeringenieur,
I get very excitedopgewonden at heatwarmte transferoverdracht
112
367803
4063
Als chemisch ingenieur ben ik
erg geïnteresseerd in warmteoverdracht.
06:23
and the ideaidee that we mightmacht one day
have water-cooledWater-Cooled 3D printersprinters,
113
371866
4179
Ooit krijgen we misschien
watergekoelde 3D-printers.
06:28
because they're going so fastsnel.
114
376045
2392
Omdat het zo snel gaat.
06:30
In additiontoevoeging, because we're growinggroeiend things,
we eliminateelimineren the layerslagen,
115
378437
4063
Omdat we dingen kweken,
elimineren we de lagen
06:34
and the partsonderdelen are monolithicmonolitisch.
116
382500

en worden de onderdelen monolithisch.
06:36
You don't see the surfaceoppervlak structurestructuur.
