ABOUT THE SPEAKER
JR - Street artist
With a camera, a dedicated wheatpasting crew and the help of whole villages and favelas, 2011 TED Prize winner JR shows the world its true face.

Why you should listen

Working anonymously, pasting his giant images on buildings, trains and bridges, the often-guerrilla artist JR forces us to see each other. Traveling to distant, often dangerous places -- the slums of Kenya, the favelas of Brazil -- he infiltrates communities, befriending inhabitants and recruiting them as models and collaborators. He gets in his subjects’ faces with a 28mm wide-angle lens, resulting in portraits that are unguarded, funny, soulful, real, that capture the sprits of individuals who normally go unseen. The blown-up images pasted on urban surfaces -– the sides of buses, on rooftops -- confront and engage audiences where they least expect it. Images of Parisian thugs are pasted up in bourgeois neighborhoods; photos of Israelis and Palestinians are posted together on both sides of the walls that separate them.

JR's gained widespread attention for his project, "Women Are Heroes," which depicted women "dealing with the effects of war, poverty, violence, and oppression” from Rio de Janeiro, Phnom Penh and Delhi to several cities in Africa. His TED Prize wish opened an even wider lens on the world. With the prize, he launched INSIDE OUT -- a global participatory art project. INSIDE OUT invites everyone to share their portrait and transform messages of personal identity into public art.

Twelve years ago, I was in the street writing my name
0

00:20
to say, "I exist."
1
4342
1839
per te thene, "Une ekzistoj".
00:22
Then I went to taking photos of people to paste them on the street
2

Pastaj fillova t'u beja foto njerezve per t'i ngjitur ato ne rruge
00:27
to say, "They exist."

per te thene, " Ata ekzistojne."
00:29
From the suburbs of Paris to the wall of Israel and Palestine,
4

4515
00:33
the rooftops of Kenya

00:41
I asked a question last year:
8
26087
2219
Une bera nje pyetje vitin e kaluar:
00:44
Can art change the world?
9
28306
2275
A mundet arti ta ndryshoje boten?
00:46
Well let me tell you,
10
30581
2002
Me lejoni t'u tregoj,
00:48
in terms of changing the world there has been a lot of competition this year,
11
32583
3740
00:52
because the Arab Spring is still spreading,
12
36323
3194
sepse pranvera Arabike eshte ende duke u shperndare,
00:55
the Eurozone has collapsed ... what else?
13
39517

Eurozona eshte shembur -- çfare tjeter?
00:58
The Occupy movement found a voice,
14
42827
2993
Levizja "Occupy" gjeti zerin,
01:01
and I still have to speak English constantly.
15
45820
2472
dhe une ende duhet te flas Anglisht rregullisht.
01:04
So there has been a lot of change.
16
48292
2833
Keshtu, ka pasur shume ndryshime.
01:07
So when I had my TED wish last year,
17
51125
2135
Kur shpreha deshiren time ne TED vitin e kaluar,
01:09
I said, look, I'm going to switch my concept.
18
53260
3163
thashe, shiko, une do te ndryshoj konceptin tim.
01:12
You are going to take the photos.
19
56423
2668
Ti do ti besh fotografite.
01:14
You're going to send them to me.
20
59091
2580
Do te mi dergosh mua.
01:17
I'm going to print them and send them back to you.
21
61671
3217
Une do t'i printoj dhe do t'i dergoj perseri te ti.
01:20
Then you're going to paste them where it makes sense
22
64888
2482
Pastaj ti do t'i ngjisesh aty ku ka kuptim
01:23
for you to place your own statement.
23
67385
1875
per ty per te shprehur ate qe do te thuash.
01:25
This is Inside Out.
24
69260
2469
Ky eshte projekti Inside Out.
01:27
One hundred thousand posters have been printed this year.
25
71729
4167
100 mije postera jane printuar kete vit.
01:31
Those are the kind of posters, let me show you.
26
75912
4000
Keto jane llojet e posterave, me lejoni te ju tregoj.
01:35
And we keep sending more every day.
27
79912
2255
Dhe ne vazhdojme te dergojme me shume çdo dite.
01:38
This is the size.
28

Kjo eshte madhesia.
01:39
Just a regular piece of paper with a little bit of ink on it.

01:43
This one was from Haiti.

Kjo ishte nga Haiti.
01:46
When I launched my wish last year,
31

2452
Kur une nisa deshiren time vitin e kaluar,
01:49
hundreds of people stood up and said they wanted to help us.
32

01:53

01:56
under the conditions I've always worked:
34
