ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Van Jones - Social justice and green energy activist
Van Jones sees a clear link between social justice and green energy -- and works for both.

Why you should listen

Anthony "Van" Jones is founder of the Ella Baker Center for human rights, based in Oakland, California, and of Green for All, an NGO dedicated to "building an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty." His work points to the connection between green energy and job creation. He's the author of The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems. In 2009, US President Obama appointed Jones his Special Advisor on Green Jobs; Jones resigned the position later that year.

Jones is a senior fellow at the Center For American Progress and a senior policy advisor at Green For All. He holds a joint appointment at Princeton as a distinguished visiting fellow in both the Center for African American Studies and in the Program in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

01:08
What people don't think about
22
53000
2000
01:10
is: what if the oil had made製作 it safely安然 to shore支撐?
23
55000
3000
01:13
What if the oil actually其實 got where it was trying to go?
24
58000

01:16
Not only would it have been burned in engines引擎
25
61000

01:18
and added添加 to global全球 warming變暖,
26

3000
01:21
but there's a place地點 called "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同,"
27
66000
3000
01:24
and the reason原因 it's called "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同"
28
69000
2000
01:26
is because the petrochemical石化 industry行業
29
71000
3000
01:29
takes that oil and turns it into plastic塑料
30
74000
2000
01:31
and, in the process處理, kills殺死 people.
31
76000
3000
01:34
It shortens縮短 the lives生活 of the people who live生活 there in the Gulf海灣.
32
79000
3000
01:37
So oil and petrochemicals石油化學產品 are not just a problem問題 where there's a spill;
33
82000
3000
01:40
they're a problem問題 where there's not.
34
85000
2000
01:42
And what we don't often經常 appreciate欣賞
35
87000
2000
01:44
is the price價錢 that poor較差的 people pay工資
36
89000
2000
01:46
for us to have these disposable一次性 products製品.
37
91000
2000
01:48
The other thing that we don't often經常 appreciate欣賞
38
93000
2000
01:50
is it's not just at the point of production生產 that poor較差的 people suffer遭受.
39
95000
3000
01:53
Poor較差的 people also suffer遭受
40
98000
2000
01:55
at the point of use.
41
100000
2000
01:57
Those of us who earn a certain某些 income收入 level水平,
42
102000
2000
01:59
we have something called choice選擇.
43
104000
2000
02:01
The reason原因 why you want to work hard and have a job工作
44
106000
2000
02:03
and not be poor較差的 and broke打破
45
108000
2000
02:05
is so you can have choices選擇, economic經濟 choices選擇.
46
110000
3000
02:08
We actually其實 get a chance機會 to choose選擇
47
113000
2000
02:10
not to use products製品
48
115000
2000
02:12
that have dangerous危險, poisonous有毒 plastic塑料 in them.
49
117000
2000
02:14
Other people who are poor較差的 don't have those choices選擇.
50
119000
3000
02:17
So low-income低收入 people often經常 are the ones那些
51
122000
2000
02:19
who are buying購買 the products製品
52
124000
2000
02:21
that have those dangerous危險 chemicals化學製品 in them that their children孩子 are using運用.
53
126000
3000
02:24
Those are the people who wind up
54
129000
2000
02:28
of this poisonous有毒 plastic塑料 and using運用 it.
56
133000
3000
02:31
And people say, "Well, they should just buy購買 a different不同 product產品."
57
136000
3000
02:34
Well, the problem問題 with being存在 poor較差的 is you don't have those choices選擇.
58
139000
3000
02:37
You often經常 have to buy購買 the cheapest最便宜 products製品.
59
142000
2000
02:39
The cheapest最便宜 products製品 are often經常 the most dangerous危險.
60
144000
3000
02:42
And if that weren't bad enough
61
147000
2000
02:44
if it wasn't just the production生產 of plastic塑料
62
149000
2000
02:46
that's giving people cancer癌症 in places地方 like "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同" and shortening縮短 lives生活
63
151000
3000
02:49
and hurting傷害 poor較差的 kids孩子 at the point of use,
64
154000
3000
02:52
at the point of disposal處置,
65
157000
2000
02:54
once一旦 again, it's poor較差的 people
66
159000
2000
02:56
who bear the burden負擔.
67
161000
2000
02:58
Often經常, we think we're doing a good thing.
68
163000
2000
03:00
You're in your office
69
165000
2000
03:02
and you're drinking your bottled瓶裝 water, or whatever隨你 it is,
70
167000
2000
03:04
and you think to yourself你自己, "Hey, I'm going to throw this away.
71
169000
3000
03:07
No, I'm going to be virtuous.
72
172000
2000
03:09
I'm going to put it in the blue藍色 bin箱子."
73
174000
2000
03:11
You think, "I put mine in the blue藍色 bin箱子,"
74
176000
2000
03:13
and then you look at your colleague同事 and say,
75
178000
3000
03:16
"Why, you cretin笨蛋.
76
181000
2000
“爲什麽你這個低能兒
03:18
You put yours你的 in the white白色 bin箱子."
77
183000
2000
03:20
And we use that as a moral道德 tickle癢癢.
78
185000
2000
03:22
We feel so good about ourselves
03:25
Maybe I'll feel good myself.
80
190000
2000
03:27
Not you, but I feel this way.
81
192000
3000
03:31
And so we kind of have this kind of moral道德 feel-good感覺不錯 moment時刻.
82
196000
3000
03:34
But if we were to be able能夠 to follow跟隨 that little bottle瓶子
83
199000
3000
03:37
on its journey旅程,
84
202000
2000
03:39
we would be shocked吃驚 to discover發現 that, all too often經常,
85
204000
3000
03:42
that bottle瓶子 is going to be put on a boat,
86
207000
2000
03:44
it's going to go all the way across橫過 the ocean海洋
87

03:49
and it's going to wind up in a developing發展 country國家 -- often經常 China中國.
89
214000
3000
03:52
I think in our minds頭腦 we imagine想像 somebody's某人的 going to take the little bottle瓶子,

217000
3000
03:55
say, "Oh, little bottle瓶子.

220000
3000

04:24
Recycling回收 of plastic塑料 in many許多 developing發展 countries國家

04:29
the burning燃燒 of the plastic塑料,

07:59
but you're not as clever聰明 as a clam.
190
464000

There's no poison. There's no pollution

08:08
It turns out that our other species種類

2000
08:10
has figured想通 out a long time ago
195
475000
2000
08:12
how to create創建 many許多 of the things that we need

3000
08:15
using運用 biological生物 processes流程 that nature性質 knows知道 how to use well.
197
480000
3000
08:18
Well that insight眼光 of biomimicry仿生學,
198
483000
2000
08:20
of our scientists科學家們 finally最後 realizing實現
199
485000
2000
08:22
that we have as much to learn學習 from other species種類.
200
487000

08:24
I don't mean taking服用 a mouse老鼠

I mean actually其實 respecting關於 them, respecting關於 what they've他們已經 achieved實現.
204
496000
3000
08:34
That's called biomimicry
205
499000
2000
08:36
and that opens打開 the door
206
501000
2000
08:38
to zero waste浪費 production生產,
207
503000
2000
08:42
that we could actually其實 enjoy請享用
209
507000
2000
08:44
a high quality質量 of life, a high standard標準 of living活的
210
509000
2000
08:46
without trashing搗毀 the planet行星.
211
511000
2000
08:48
Well that idea理念 of biomimicry仿生學,
212
513000
3000
08:51
respecting關於 the wisdom智慧 of all species種類,
213
516000
2000
08:53
combined結合 with the idea理念
214
518000
2000
去結合
08:55
of democracy民主 and social社會 justice正義,
215
520000
2000
08:57
respecting關於 the wisdom智慧 and the worth價值 of all people,
216
522000

09:00
would give us a different不同 society社會.
217
525000
2000
09:02
We would have a different不同 economy經濟.
218
527000
2000
09:04
We would have a green綠色 society社會
219
529000
2000
09:06
that Dr博士. King國王 would be proud驕傲 of.
220
531000
2000
09:08
That should be the goal目標.
221
533000
2000
09:10
And the way that we get there is to first of all recognize認識
222
535000
3000
09:13
that the idea理念 of disposability可處理
223
538000
3000
09:16
not only hurts傷害
224
541000
2000
09:18
the species種類 we've我們已經 talked about,
225
543000
2000
09:20
but it even corrupts腐敗 our own擁有 society社會.
226
545000
3000
09:23
We're so proud驕傲 to live生活 here in California加州.
227
548000
3000
09:26
We just had this vote投票, and everybody's每個人的 like,
228
551000
2000
09:28
"Well, not in our state.
229
553000
3000
“這種事不該在這裡發生。
09:31
I don't know what those other states狀態 were doing."
230
556000
3000
09:34
(Laughter
231
559000
2000
09:36
Just so proud
232
561000
2000
09:38
And, yeah, I'm proud驕傲, too.
233
563000
3000
09:41
But California加州,
234
566000
3000
09:44
though雖然 we lead the world世界 in some of the green綠色 stuff東東,
235
569000
3000
09:47
we also, unfortunately不幸, lead the world世界
236
572000
2000
09:49
in some of the gulag古拉格 stuff東東.
237
574000
3000
09:52
California加州 has one of the highest最高 incarceration監禁 rates利率
238
577000
3000
09:55
of all the 50 states狀態.
239
580000
2000
09:57
We have a moral道德 challenge挑戰 in this moment時刻.
240
582000
3000
10:00
We are passionate多情 about rescuing營救
241
585000
3000
10:03
some dead materials物料 from the landfill垃圾填埋場,
242
588000
2000
10:05
but sometimes有時 not as passionate多情
243
590000
2000
10:07
about rescuing營救 living活的 beings眾生, living活的 people.
244
592000
3000
10:10
And I would say that we live生活 in a country國家 --
245
595000
3000
10:13
five percent百分 of the world's世界 population人口,
246
598000
2000
10:15
25 percent百分 of the greenhouse溫室 gases氣體,
247
600000
3000
10:18
but also 25 percent百分 of the world's世界 prisoners囚犯.
248
603000
2000
10:20
One out of every一切 four people locked鎖定 up anywhere隨地 in the world世界
249
605000
3000
10:23
is locked鎖定 up right here in the United聯合的 States狀態.
250
608000
2000
10:25
So that is consistent一貫 with this idea理念
251
610000
3000
10:28
that disposability可處理 is something we believe in.
252
613000
3000
10:31
And yet然而,
253
616000
3000
然而
10:34
as a movement運動
254
619000
2000
10:36
that has to broaden擴大 its constituency選民,
255
621000
2000
10:38
that has to grow增長,
256
623000
2000
10:40
that has to reach達到 out beyond our natural自然 comfort安慰 zone,
257
625000
3000
10:43
one of the challenges挑戰 to the success成功 of this movement運動,
258
628000
3000
10:46
of getting得到 rid擺脫 of things like plastic塑料 and helping幫助 the economy經濟 shift轉移,
259
631000
3000
10:49
is people look at our movement運動 with some suspicion懷疑.
260
634000
3000
10:52
And they ask a question, and the question is:
261
637000
3000
10:55
How can these people be so passionate多情?
262
640000
3000
10:58
A poor較差的 person, a low-income低收入 person, somebody in "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同,"
263
643000
3000
11:01
somebody in Watts,
264
646000
3000
11:04
somebody in Harlem哈林, somebody on an Indian印度人 reservation保留,
265
649000
2000
11:06
might威力 say to themselves他們自己, and rightfully理所當然 so,
266
651000
2000
11:08
"How can these people be so passionate多情
267
653000
3000
“這些人怎麽會這麽執著地
11:11
about making製造 sure
268
656000
2000
要確認
11:13
that a plastic塑料 bottle瓶子
269
658000
2000
11:15
has a second第二 chance機會 in life,
270
660000
2000
11:17
or an aluminum can has a second第二 chance機會,
271
662000
3000
11:20
and yet然而, when my child兒童 gets得到 in trouble麻煩
272
665000
2000
11:22
and goes to prison監獄,
273
667000
2000
11:24
he doesn't get a second第二 chance機會?"
274
669000
2000
11:26
How can this movement運動 be so passionate多情
275
671000
2000
11:28
about saying we don't have throwaway丟掉 stuff東東, no throwaway丟掉 dead materials物料,
276
673000
3000
11:31
and yet然而 accept接受
277
676000
2000
11:33
throwaway丟掉 lives生活 and throwaway丟掉 communities社區 like "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同?"
278
678000
3000
11:36
And so we now get a chance機會
279
681000
3000
11:39
to be truly proud驕傲 of this movement運動.
280
684000
3000
11:42
When we take on topics主題 like this,
281
687000
2000
11:44
it gives us that extra額外 call
282
689000
2000
11:46
to reach達到 out to other movements運動
283
691000
2000
11:48
and to become成為 more inclusive包括的 and to grow增長,
284
693000
3000
11:51
and we can finally最後 get out of this crazy dilemma困境 that we've我們已經 been in.
285
696000
3000
11:55
Most of you are good, softhearted好心的 people.
286
700000
2000
11:57
When you were younger更年輕, you cared照顧 about the whole整個 world世界,
287

12:00
and at some point
288
705000
2000
12:02
somebody said you had to pick an issue問題,
289
707000
2000
12:04
you had to boil your love down to an issue問題.
290

12:08
you've got to work on trees樹木,

12:20
or are you going to hug擁抱 a child兒童? Pick.
297
725000
2000
