and the nature of understanding,
we aim for, everyone.
o co každému z nás jde.
your perspective.
you don't have understanding.
nejste schopni porozumět.
as addition, subtraction,
představí sčítání, odčítání,
algebra -- all that stuff.
about the essence of mathematics as well.
co je podstatou matematiky.
has to do with patterns.
souvisí se vzorci.
just from drawing circles
of mathematics that I use every day
a structure, some regularity,
souvislost, strukturu a pravidelnost,
these patterns with a language.
and just seeing what happens.
se zabývá skvělými věcmi.
to do so many things.
the mathematics of tie knots.
center-out and tie.
protáhnout středem a utáhnout.
left-in, center-out and tie.
protáhnout středem a utáhnout.
for the patterns of tie knots,
pro vázání kravatových uzlů,
about tying shoelaces
are all over mathematics.
for patterns in nature.
this with mathematics in a pattern.
vyjádřit matematickým vzorcem.
for dancing, for tap dancing.
to do cool stuff, to do new things,
nové a skvělé kousky,
representing something actually is.
jak úžasné vlastně je, něco si znázornit.
represent the word?
the word and the concept.
znázorňují slovo a pojem.
going on about representing stuff.
that magic that happens
with different widths.
for a particular book.
this book, it's a very nice book.
with some straight lines.
we move one down and one across,
a little bit. I can rotate it.
Můžu to otočit.
and look for the true pattern.
o jaký obrazec se jedná.
a vytvořím takovou kresbu?
the lines like this,
and change our perspective again.
a podívejme se na to znovu jinak.
what started out as just straight lines
co začalo jako pouhé úsečky,
day-to-day definition.
a little bit deeper,
what the nature of this is.
that's a little bit deeper,
to change your perspective.
změnit náš náhled.
you change your perspective,
about what you are watching
thing that we do all the time.
kterou děláme neustále.
this simple equation,
and it's true,
a takto to vyjádříme.
and we represent it like this.
is equal to something else,
se rovná něčemu jinému
that every equation is like this,
where you use that equality sign
kde používáte rovnítko,
and taking two different points of view,
ze dvou různých pohledů
beautiful equations.
and the other one is.
z podstatných součástí matematiky,
of the essential parts
different points of view.
We know what four-thirds is.
those three dots,
ale musíme tam mít ty tři tečky,
we use 10 digits.
and only use two digits,
change the number of digits,
změnit počet číslic
of the same number.
like 1.3 or 1.6.
jednoduše jako 1,3 nebo 1,6.
how many digits you have.
and write it like this.
four divided by three.
protože tu stojí čtyři děleno třemi.
a relation between two numbers.
mezi dvěma čísly.
and three on the other.
a na druhé stojí tři.
from different perspectives.
dívám z různých hledisek.
how we view something,
this line equals five, always.
bude tahle přímka vždycky rovna pěti.
This is a beautiful pattern.
and just play more with this number.
a pohrát si s tímto číslem.
I'm going to rotate them like this.
Budu v nich otáčet úsečku.
four-thirds as fast.
around four times,
this dot where the lines meet.
a vyznačme bod v jejich průsečíku.
is the image of four-thirds.
že jde o znázornění čtyř třetin.
(pokřik)
for a long time, but --
(zvuk tónu)
(pípnutí)
it sounds like this.
a sound, play the same A.
Můžeme zahrát to samé A.
by four-thirds. (Beep)
(zvuk tónu)
(zvuk tónu)
(souzvuk tónů)
I'm changing my perspective.
from another perspective.
three beats at one time (Drumbeats)
zahrát tři údery (pravidelné údery)
four times in that same space.
můžu zahrát jiný zvuk čtyřikrát.
but listen to them together.
ale poslechněte si je dohromady.
and play games with this number.
I love four-thirds!
Mám je strašně rád.
at the volume of the sphere,
of some particular cylinder.
čtyři třetiny konkrétního válce.
It's the volume of the sphere.
Je to objem koule.
to understand something
co znamená něco pochopit,
by understanding something.
you understand something
když na to dokážete
from different perspectives.
It's a beautiful R, right?
Je to krásné R, že?
you've seen a bunch of R's,
spoustu písmenek R,
and found a pattern.
is saying something
and changing your perspective
to teach something,
another story, a metaphor, an analogy,
nabídnu metaforu, analogii,
from a different point of view,
z jiného úhlu pohledu,
over everything you see and hear,
co vidíte a slyšíte, zobecnit
that will become easier for you.
bude to pro vás snadnější.
This is four triangles.
Tohle jsou čtyři trojúhelníky.
to jsou také čtyři třetiny.
we're going to fold it up
and put them together.
change our perspective,
around all of the axes
otáčet ve všech těch osách
from another point of view,
but it looks a little different.
vypadá ale trošku jinak.
something else appears,
more about the object
for creating understanding.
pro vytváření porozumění.
and put them together like this
like the octahedron.
it around like this.
join them together and spin it around,
of an octahedron.
around the octahedron,
narýsovat tři velké kružnice,
is related to the octahedron.
souvisí s osmistěnem.
and just pump it up,
a little bit like the octahedron.
a metaphor, stepping back --
dívat se s odstupem -
with perspectives and analogies.
I'm making several narratives.
make understanding possible.
něčemu porozumět.
of understanding something.
skutečně podstatou chápání.
your perspective --
have a look at the ocean.
and view it up close.
a podíváme se na něj zblízka.
from another perspective.
a little bit more about the ocean.
we can kind of smell it, right?
poznáme to po čichu.
are different perspectives.
in mathematics and computer science.
je tohle naprosto zásadní.
a structure from the inside,
and we've taken this journey
for changing your perspective.
pro změnu perspektivy.
and that you're sitting here.
že jste tam nahoře.
from the outside.
are the most imaginative art forms ever.
formy vědy, které kdy existovaly.
from your perspective,
like from your perspective,
and this is all over computer science,
between empathy and these sciences.
existuje hluboký vztah.
to change your perspective.
změnit svůj úhel pohledu.
try to change your perspective.
makes your mind more flexible.
přispívá k pružnějšímu myšlení.
able to understand things.

Why you should listen
Roger Antonsen is a logician, mathematician, computer scientist, researcher, inventor, author, lecturer, science communicator and public speaker. He teaches logical methods as an associate professor at the Department of Informatics in the research group Logic and Intelligent Data (LogID) at the University of Oslo.
Antonsen is also engaged in various forms of science communication and outreach. His academic interests are logical calculi, proof theory, mathematical logic, complexity theory, automata, combinatorics, philosophy of mathematics, but he is interested in most topics related to mathematics, computer science and philosophy. His vision is to communicate science differently, to inspire creative thinking and to remove the common misconceptions about mathematics and computer science.
