and the nature of understanding,
we aim for, everyone.
your perspective.
you don't have understanding.
as addition, subtraction,
algebra -- all that stuff.
about the essence of mathematics as well.
has to do with patterns.
just from drawing circles
of mathematics that I use every day
a structure, some regularity,
these patterns with a language.
and just seeing what happens.
to do so many things.
the mathematics of tie knots.
center-out and tie.
left-in, center-out and tie.
for the patterns of tie knots,
about tying shoelaces
are all over mathematics.
for patterns in nature.
this with mathematics in a pattern.
for dancing, for tap dancing.
to do cool stuff, to do new things,
representing something actually is.
represent the word?
the word and the concept.
going on about representing stuff.
that magic that happens
with different widths.
for a particular book.
this book, it's a very nice book.
with some straight lines.
we move one down and one across,
a little bit. I can rotate it.
and look for the true pattern.
the lines like this,
and change our perspective again.
what started out as just straight lines
day-to-day definition.
a little bit deeper,
what the nature of this is.
that's a little bit deeper,
to change your perspective.
you change your perspective,
about what you are watching
thing that we do all the time.
this simple equation,
and it's true,
and we represent it like this.
is equal to something else,
that every equation is like this,
where you use that equality sign
and taking two different points of view,
beautiful equations.
and the other one is.
of the essential parts
different points of view.
We know what four-thirds is.
Vi ved hvad fire tredjedele er.
those three dots,
we use 10 digits.
and only use two digits,
change the number of digits,
of the same number.
like 1.3 or 1.6.
how many digits you have.
and write it like this.
four divided by three.
a relation between two numbers.
and three on the other.
from different perspectives.
how we view something,
this line equals five, always.
This is a beautiful pattern.
Dette er et smukt mønster.
and just play more with this number.
og lege mere med dette nummer.
I'm going to rotate them like this.
Jeg roterer dem lige sådan her:
four-thirds as fast.
around four times,
fire gange,
this dot where the lines meet.
is the image of four-thirds.
for a long time, but --
it sounds like this.
a sound, play the same A.
by four-thirds. (Beep)
I'm changing my perspective.
from another perspective.
three beats at one time (Drumbeats)
four times in that same space.
but listen to them together.
and play games with this number.
I love four-thirds!
at the volume of the sphere,
of some particular cylinder.
It's the volume of the sphere.
Det er sfærens masse.
to understand something
by understanding something.
you understand something
from different perspectives.
It's a beautiful R, right?
Det er et smukt R, ikke?
you've seen a bunch of R's,
and found a pattern.
is saying something
and changing your perspective
to teach something,
another story, a metaphor, an analogy,
from a different point of view,
over everything you see and hear,
that will become easier for you.
This is four triangles.
Dette er fire triangler.
we're going to fold it up
and put them together.
change our perspective,
around all of the axes
from another point of view,
but it looks a little different.
something else appears,
more about the object
for creating understanding.
and put them together like this
like the octahedron.
it around like this.
join them together and spin it around,
en smuk struktur.
of an octahedron.
around the octahedron,
is related to the octahedron.
and just pump it up,
og puster denne op,
a little bit like the octahedron.
a metaphor, stepping back --
with perspectives and analogies.
I'm making several narratives.
make understanding possible.
of understanding something.
your perspective --
have a look at the ocean.
and view it up close.
from another perspective.
a little bit more about the ocean.
we can kind of smell it, right?
are different perspectives.
in mathematics and computer science.
a structure from the inside,
and we've taken this journey
for changing your perspective.
and that you're sitting here.
from the outside.
are the most imaginative art forms ever.
from your perspective,
like from your perspective,
and this is all over computer science,
between empathy and these sciences.
to change your perspective.
try to change your perspective.
Prøv at ændre dit perspektiv.
makes your mind more flexible.
able to understand things.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Roger Antonsen - Logician, mathematician, computer scientistRoger Antonsen combines science, mathematics and computer science with entertainment, philosophy and visualizations.
Why you should listen
Roger Antonsen is a logician, mathematician, computer scientist, researcher, inventor, author, lecturer, science communicator and public speaker. He teaches logical methods as an associate professor at the Department of Informatics in the research group Logic and Intelligent Data (LogID) at the University of Oslo.
Antonsen is also engaged in various forms of science communication and outreach. His academic interests are logical calculi, proof theory, mathematical logic, complexity theory, automata, combinatorics, philosophy of mathematics, but he is interested in most topics related to mathematics, computer science and philosophy. His vision is to communicate science differently, to inspire creative thinking and to remove the common misconceptions about mathematics and computer science.
