ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Bill Gates - Philanthropist
A passionate techie and a shrewd businessman, Bill Gates changed the world while leading Microsoft to dizzying success. Now he's doing it again with his own style of philanthropy and passion for innovation.

Why you should listen

Bill Gates is the founder and former CEO of Microsoft. A geek icon, tech visionary and business trailblazer, Gates' leadership -- fueled by his long-held dream that millions might realize their potential through great software -- made Microsoft a personal computing powerhouse and a trendsetter in the Internet dawn. Whether you're a suit, chef, quant, artist, media maven, nurse or gamer, you've probably used a Microsoft product today.

In summer of 2008, Gates left his day-to-day role with Microsoft to focus on philanthropy. Holding that all lives have equal value (no matter where they're being lived), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has now donated staggering sums to HIV/AIDS programs, libraries, agriculture research and disaster relief -- and offered vital guidance and creative funding to programs in global health and education. Gates believes his tech-centric strategy for giving will prove the killer app of planet Earth's next big upgrade.

Read a collection of Bill and Melinda Gates' annual letters, where they take stock of the Gates Foundation and the world. And follow his ongoing thinking on his personal website, The Gates Notes. His new paper, "The Next Epidemic," is published by the New England Journal of Medicine.

Bil Gejts (Bill Gates): Nova epidemija? Nismo spremni

03:43
There's threeтри reasonsразлоге why
it didn't spreadширити more.
54
211846
2587
Postoje tri razloga
zašto se ona nije još raširila.
03:46
The first is that there was a lot
of heroicherojski work by the healthздравље workersрадници.
55
214433
4441
Prvi je da su zdravstveni radnici
herojski radili svoj posao.
03:50
They foundнашао the people and they
preventedспречено more infectionsинфекције.
56
218874

Pronašli su ljude

03:54
The secondдруго is the natureприрода of the virusвирус.
57
222136
2485
Drugi je priroda virusa.
03:56
EbolaEbola does not spreadширити throughкроз the airваздух.
58
224621
3076
Ebola se ne širi vadušnim putem.
03:59
And by the time you're contagiouszarazna,
59
227697
2113
Do trenutka kada se zaraze,
04:01
mostнајвише people are so sickболестан
that they're bedriddenprikovana za krevet.
60
229810
2740
većina ljudi je toliko bolesna
da su vezani za krevet.
04:06
ThirdTreći, it didn't get
into manyмноги urbanурбано areasобласти.
61
234220
4191
Treće, nije dospela
do mnogo urbanih okruženja.
04:10
And that was just luckсрећа.
62
238411
1704
To je bila puka sreća.
04:12
If it had gottenготтен into a lot
more urbanурбано areasобласти,
63
240115
2240
Da je došla u više urbanih okruženja,
04:14
the caseслучај numbersбројеви
would have been much largerвеће.
64
242355
3522
brojevi zaraženih bili bi mnogo veći.
04:17
So nextследећи time, we mightМожда not be so luckyСрећно.
65
245877
3589
Sledećeg puta možda nećemo biti te sreće.
04:21
You can have a virusвирус where people
feel well enoughдовољно while they're infectiousinfektivne
66
249466
5064
Možete imati virus gde se ljudi
osećaju dovoljno dobro kada su zarazni
04:26
that they get on a planeавион
or they go to a marketтржиште.
67
254530
3312
da se ukrcaju na avion ili odu na pijacu.
04:29
The sourceизвор of the virusвирус could be
a naturalприродно epidemicепидемија like EbolaEbola,
68
257842
3004
Izvor virusa može biti
prirodna epidemija, poput ebole,
04:32
or it could be bioterrorismbiološko oružje.
69
260846
1980
ili može biti bioterorizam.
04:34
So there are things that would literallyбуквално
make things a thousandхиљада timesпута worseгоре.
70
262826
4648
Postoje stvari koje bi bukvalno
pogoršale sve za hiljadu puta.
04:39
In factчињеница, let's look at a modelмодел
of a virusвирус spreadширити throughкроз the airваздух,
71
267474
6001
Zapravo, pogledajmo model
širenja virusa vazduhom,
04:45
like the Spanishšpanski FluGripa back in 1918.
72
273475
3595
poput španskog gripa iz 1918.
04:49
So here'sево what would happenдесити се:
73
277630
1930
Desilo bi se sledeće:
04:51
It would spreadширити throughoutтоком the worldсвет

74
279560
3998
virus bi se proširio svetom
veoma, veoma brzo.
04:55
And you can see over 30 millionмилиона people
diedумро from that epidemicепидемија.
75
283558
5125
Možete videti da je od te epidemije
umrlo preko 30 miliona ljudi.
05:00
So this is a seriousозбиљан problemпроблем.
76
288683
1813
Ovo je ozbiljan problem.
05:02
We should be concernedзабринути.
77
290496
1761
Treba da budemo zabrinuti.
05:04
But in factчињеница, we can buildизградити
a really good responseодговор systemсистем.
78
292257
4435
Zapravo, možemo izgraditi
veoma dobar odbrambeni sistem.
05:08
We have the benefitsПредности of all the scienceНаука

79

05:33
So we can have toolsалати,

So those are the kindsврсте of things

98
356779

To su stvari sa kojima moramo da radimo

06:13
What are the keyкључ piecesкомада?

Šta su ključni delovi?
06:15
First, we need strongјак healthздравље systemsсистема
