ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Liza Donnelly - Cartoonist
New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly tackles global issues with humor, intelligence and sarcasm. Her latest project supports the United Nations initiative Cartooning For Peace.

Why you should listen

When Liza Donnelly joined The New Yorker in 1982, she was the youngest cartoonist on staff and one of only three women at the time to draw cartoons for the magazine. She’s still there. In 2005, Donnelly wrote the definitive book about her colleagues: Funny Ladies: The New Yorker’s Greatest Women Cartoonists and Their Cartoons. She’s been part of many other books, including Sex and Sensibility, Cartoon Marriage (about her life with fellow New Yorker cartoonist Michael Maslin) and a popular series of dinosaur books for kids. Her latest is Women on Men.

In 2007, Donnelly joined the United Nations initiative Cartooning for Peace. She travels worldwide to speak out about freedom of speech, world peace, and other global issues. Along with her New Yorker cartoons, Donnelly writes a column for Forbes, and draws a weekly political cartoon for Medium. She's a founding member of the US branch of the international organization FECO, and has taught at Vassar College and The School of Visual Arts. She received an honorary PhD from the University of Connecticut and is a cultural envoy for the US State Department, traveling to speak about women's rights, freedom of expression and cartoons.

A těmi prvotními strážci jsou ženy,
02:28
because we are the carriersdopravců of the traditiontradice.
52
133000

protože jsme nositelkami tradice.
02:30
We passsložit it down from generationgenerace to generationgenerace.

Předáváme ji z generace na generaci.
02:34
Not only that --
54
139000

Nejenže
02:36
we always have this vaguevágní notionpojem

že se od nás něco očekává.
02:40
And on tophorní of all off these rulespravidel,
57
145000
3000
A nadto, ta pravidla
02:43
they keep changingměnící se.
58
148000
2000
se stále mění.
02:45
(LaughterSmích)
59
150000
4000
("Dělá mi starosti, že nemám starosti.")
02:49
We don't know what's going on halfpolovina the time,
60
154000
3000
Polovinu času nevíme, co se děje
02:52
so it putsdělá us in a very tenuousnejasný positionpozice.
61
157000
3000
a to nás staví do velmi slabé pozice.
02:55
(LaughterSmích)
62
160000
2000
("Pravidla: jak se oblékat, chovat se, mluvit, chodit, doplňte další pravidlo").
02:57
Now if you don't like these rulespravidel,
63
162000
2000
Pokud se vám tato pravidla nelíbí,
02:59
and manymnoho of us don't --
64
164000
2000
a mnoha z nás se nelíbí -
03:01
I know I didn't, and I still don't,
65
166000
3000
mně osobně se nelíbila a nelíbí,
03:04
even thoughačkoli I follownásledovat them halfpolovina the time,

03:08
what better way than to changezměna them [than] with humorhumor?
68
173000
3000
jak lépe je změnit než humorem?
03:13
HumorHumor reliesje založena on the traditionstradicemi of a societyspolečnost.
69
178000
3000
Humor se opírá o tradice společnosti.
03:16
It takes what we know, and it twistszvraty it.
70
181000
3000
Vezme si, co známe a otočí to.
03:19
It takes the codeskódy of behaviorchování and the codeskódy of dressšaty,
71
184000
2000
Vezme si pravidla chování a oblékání,
03:21
and it makesdělá it unexpectednečekané,
72
186000
2000
udělá z nich něco nečekaného
03:23
and that's what elicitsvyvolává a laughsmát se.
73
188000
2000
a tak vyvolá smích.
03:25
Now what if you put togetherspolu womenženy and humorhumor?
74
190000
3000
Co se stane, když spojíte ženy a humor?
03:28
I think you can get changezměna.
75
193000
2000
Podle mně můžete dostat změnu.
03:30
Because womenženy are on the groundpřízemní floorpatro, podlaha, dno,
76
195000
2000
Protože my ženy stojíme pevně nohama na zemi,
03:32
and we know the traditionstradicemi so well,
77
197000
2000
a známe tradice tak dobře,
03:34
we can bringpřinést a differentodlišný voicehlas to the tablestůl.
78

03:52
And then alsotaké my familyrodina was in chaoschaos,

Moji rodiče se rozvedli a moji sestru zatkli.
04:11
But I foundnalezeno my placemísto.
92

Ale já jsem se našla.
04:13
I foundnalezeno that I didn't have to wearmít na sobě highvysoký heelspodpatky,

04:20
Now when I was a little olderstarší, in my 20s,

Když jsem byla trochu starší a bylo mi kolem 20,
04:23
I realizeduvědomil there are not manymnoho womenženy in cartooningcartooning.
97

zjistila jsem, že je jen málo žen - kreslířek vtipů.
04:26
And I thought, "Well, maybe I can breakPřestávka

100
255000

A to se i stalo; stala se ze mne kreslířka.
04:32
And then I thought -- in my 40s I startedzačal thinkingmyslící,

I always lovedmiloval politicalpolitický cartoonskarikatury,
