an electronic spreadsheet,
with a spreadsheet by hand,
printing business in Philadelphia?
for hundreds of years.
una hoja de cálculo electrónica,
I started working on an idea
con una hoja de cálculo a mano,
called an Apple II personal computer.
imprenta en Filadelfia?
had really changed when, six years later,
durante cientos de años.
and maybe even were using it.
empecé a trabajar en una idea
propelled the industry forward."
computadora personal Apple II.
more than any other single event."
habían cambiado, 6 años después,
publicó una editorial
for some other computer,
y quizá incluso la usaba.
somebody else right now."
personal computers on business desks.
impulsaron la industria".
más que cualquier otro acontecimiento".
to make it be what it was?
escrito para alguna otra computadora,
back in 1966, when I was 15 --
a otra persona en este momento".
after this photo was taken.
las PC a los escritorios de negocios.
to computers in those days.
and an awful lot of perseverance,
para hacer que fuera lo que fue?
computer time around the city.
en 1966, a mis 15 años,
I went off to MIT to go to college,
I worked on the Multics Project.
acceso a computadoras en esos días.

and Unix operating systems?
en la ciudad.
fui al MIT a la universidad,
as interpreted computer languages,
trabajé en el Proyecto Multics.
in noncomputer fields
pionero de tiempo compartido.
while seated at a computer terminal.
y los sistemas operativos Unix?
Digital Equipment Corporation.
lenguajes informáticos interpretados,
of computerized typesetting.

no computacionales
en una terminal informática.
to places like the Kansas City Star,

and get feedback.
than what I saw in the lab at MIT.

was crafting a user interface
como The Kansas City Star,
y obtenía retroalimentación.

en el laboratorio del MIT.
to work for a small company
cash registers for the fast-food industry.
nuevamente un nuevo campo.
era crear una interfaz de usuario
a company with my friend Bob Frankston
personas que no usaban computadoras.
as much as I could about business.
para una pequeña empresa que hacía
at Harvard Business School.
para casas de comida rápida.

we learned by the case method.

for the particular situation.
sentado en la primera fila.
mediante el método por casos.
laid out in ways that made sense.
we got really close to our calculators.
y estas suelen tener palabras y números
dressed up as a calculator.
para la situación particular.
the professor would call on somebody
they would explain what was going on
en formas que tuvieran sentido.
that the professor would transcribe
nuestras calculadoras.
in the front of the class,
is when you've done all your homework,
de calculadora.
only to find out that you made an error
el profesor llamaba a alguien
you did were wrong.
que el profesor transcribía
in the class, I got to daydream a lot.
del frente de la clase,
worked on mainframes,
tras haber hecho toda tu tarea,
payroll systems and bill-paying systems.
de que habías cometido un error
estaban mal.
on interactive word processing
la participación en clase.
about paper printouts and punch cards,
en clase, soñé mucho despierto.
and wrote a new thing in,
esa época trabajaba en mainframes,
would automatically change,
de nómina y sistemas de pago de facturas.
had mouse hardware on the bottom of it
procesamiento interactivo de textos
like in a fighter plane.
de papel y tarjetas perforadas,
and circle it, and press the sum button.
I'd be able to get the answer.
y escribía algo nuevo,
and turn it into reality.
de manera automática,
pero con números.

to those problems much less expensively.

that I ran into was:
de lo que se intenta construir
menos costosas a esos problemas.
then type in some somewhere else,
point where you want the answer.
sistema de tiempo compartido de Harvard
point to the second,
que encontré fue:
What should I put in the formula?
en las fórmulas?
the computer knew what to put in.
where on the screen it referred to.
the programmer way of doing it.
luego ingresaba algo en otro sitio,
apuntaba dónde quería la respuesta.
to type in a unique name.
menos, apuntaba al segundo,
that was going to be too tedious.
make up the name and put it inside.
¿Qué debo poner en la fórmula?
la computadora supiera.
the order in which you create them?
la pantalla hacía referencia.
that if you had more than a few values
cómo lo haría un programador.
on the screen where things were.
ingreses un nombre único.
allowing you to put values anywhere,
que sería algo tedioso.
por dentro el nombre de forma automática.
the row and column in as a name.
en el orden en que se crean?
across the top and numbers along the side,
con más de unos pocos valores
las cosas en la pantalla.
where it was on the screen.
permitir poner valores por doquier
in yourself, you'd know what to do.
helped solve my problem.
like the ability to have ranges of cells.
con la fila y la columna.
arriba y los números a un lado,
any formula, in any cell.
almost 40 years later.
dónde estaba en la pantalla.
la fórmula, sabría qué hacer.
going to build this product together.
ayudaba a resolver el problema.
how the program was supposed to behave.
como tener rangos de celdas.
to act as documentation.
that the user interface I was defining
cualquier fórmula, en cualquier celda.
and clearly to regular people.
casi 40 años después.
he rented in Arlington, Massachusetts.
construir este producto juntos.
funcionaría el programa.
on a terminal like this.
como documentación.
to a borrowed Apple II

using an acoustic coupler,
y clara para personas comunes.
for this case about the Pepsi Challenge.
que alquiló en Arlington, Massachusetts.
so I had to copy everything down.
so every time it crashed,
sistema Multics del MIT
again, over and over again.
en una terminal como esta.
I got called on, and I presented the case.
a una Apple II prestada
que usaba un acoplador acústico,
I did all sorts of different scenarios.
VisiCalc was already useful.
este caso sobre el Desafío Pepsi.
así que tuve que copiar todo.
about our secret program.
por eso cada vez que se colgaba,
las fórmulas una y otra vez.
and subtracted that."
why didn't you use a ratio?"
la mano; me llamaron y presenté el caso.
that wouldn't have been as exact!"
Presenté todo tipo de escenarios.
"Divide isn't working yet."
VisiCalc ya era útil.
we did finish enough of VisiCalc
sobre el programa secreto.
announced VisiCalc to the world,
no usaste una proporción?"
¡No habría sido tan exacto!"
