of being who you are
to your knees in gratitude
that's been bestowed on you;
that you're wasting your life.
in the next 17 minutes --
a conference on happiness,
that in some way, shape, fashion or form,
children, relationships, whatever --
a minute on this.
in order to be happy?
a bunch of stuff comes up:
lots of travel, time, etc, etc, etc.
of, "Here's what I need to get
you can get, you can un-get.
Vast wealth can disappear tomorrow.
have discovered this already.
that can make you happy
to suggest to you.
that you have to get, do or be
do or be in order to be happy.
It is part of your DNA.
I speak in, such as top business schools,
what many of you are thinking,
is my innate nature,
is actually very simple.
your entire life learning to be unhappy.
a particular mental model.
that this is the way the world works.
we've got dozens of mental models.
on how to find a job,
how to pick a restaurant to eat at,
to go to ... dozens of them.
that we have mental models.
that we have mental models.
is the way the world works.
that we buy into so strongly
so we can do something
so we can travel to exotic places
so we can have great sex
of the if-then model.
if I were to get more money,
if only my wife would leave me --
and go to college ...
that's different
that you are focusing on?
and where you were 10 years ago
that you were focusing on?
10 years ago you now have.
is the model itself is flawed.
"If this happens I will be happy" --
that it is the model itself that's flawed,
enormous amounts of time
CEO it would help,
that I want to become a CEO.
not what you put on the "if" side
of such spectacular beauty
into a place of great serenity?
raise your hands if you could.
exactly as it was.
but it's kind of off to the left,
200 yards to the right,
"That's a beautiful valley,
has too many crooked branches.
a chainsaw and 20 minutes,
the universe just as it was,
your innate nature surfaced,
that you think you have --
to make it different.
you can get out of that,
towards getting out of that.
to achieve something, correct?
and we want to have something.
a successful conference.
great programs for your companies
all of that, is that correct?
you would like something to happen.
about the following:
out of your control.
outside your control.
that when you have a goal
you don't achieve your goal,
who said, "Gee, you know,
a lot of attention to my wife,
we went on a business trip,
you know, I care for you,
to his wife, her immediate reaction was,
you don't know my size?"
I never wear this kind of thing?"
he had a full-blown marital spat.
for a particular outcome
was the exact opposite
where what we think of,
in order to get from where I am
from what we would like,
of what we would like.
and you are guaranteed to have
that makes life suck.
invest in the outcome,
is a quote by John Wooden.
are familiar with John Wooden.
the basketball Hall of Fame
NCAA(전미대학체육협회)에서 우승했지만
of victories and finals in the NCAA --
is he never spoke about winning.
and you look in the mirror,
that you were capable of?
that you were capable of,
the best that you were capable of,
I want it so desperately,
to do whatever you can,
on, "This is the outcome."
of a particular outcome
here is where I am,
and that's fine,
to the extent that it gives you direction,
completely in the process.
you want to take,
and from that new starting point,
that every day is a blast.
your hands if you have children.
a small child learn to walk?
typically between 11 and 13 months,
and she sees everybody walking,
she falls down, she starts crying
kisses the place, makes it well.
mommy runs up again.
and no longer runs up
and then she takes another,
she's walking all over the place,
to a new stage of parenting.
feelings of inadequacy
and fail yet again.
to learn to walk if you had to do that,
you had to get a counselor
is focusing on the process.
to invest in the process,
is outside of our control,
all of our emotional energy,
I am going to invest in the process
the vision that I outlined to you.
is people say, "Professor Rao,
you know, here is a list of things.
here's how much I travel,
how deep the carpeting is,
I want to share with you,
first of all, it doesn't exist.
and you were plugged into it,
miserable self there as you are now,
to ignite it within you
to ignite it where you are,
that you are becoming.
that miracles happen on a regular basis.
whom you're delighted to meet.
is you take journeys.
you went on a journey.
your place of work is;
you go on a journey.
affairs with 19-something gardeners
are playing around with models.
but just ask yourself,
I want to spend time?"
the things you talk about,
the books you read --
