ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jacqueline Novogratz - Investor and advocate for moral leadership
Jacqueline Novogratz works to enable human flourishing. Her organization, Acumen, invests in people, companies and ideas that see capital and networks as means, not ends, to solving the toughest issues of poverty.

Why you should listen

Jacqueline Novogratz writes: "I want to build a movement in which we define success based on the amount of human energy we release in the world.

"I started my career on Wall Street and soon discovered that markets are efficient, but by themselves they too often overlook or exploit the poor. So I moved to Rwanda in 1986 to help found the country’s first micro-finance bank. There I saw the humanitarian ethos of philanthropy, and also how often top-down solutions too often create dependency, the opposite of dignity. Through 30 years of working on solutions to poverty, I have come to redefine it for myself, seeing it not as how much income a person earns, but how free they are to make their own choices and decisions, how much agency they have over their own lives.

Acumen was founded to change the way the world tackles poverty in 2001. Our mission was simple – to raise philanthropy and invest it as patient capital – long-term investment in intrepid entrepreneurs willing to go where markets and government had failed the poor. We enable companies to experiment and fail, never wavering from a commitment to stand with the poor, yet understanding that profitability is necessary for sustainable solutions. We’ve invested more than $110M across South Asia, Africa, Latin America and the US, and have seen entire sectors disrupted and hundreds of millions served.

The work also taught that it was critical to invest in talent. To date, we’ve supported nearly 400 Acumen Fellows across lines of race, class, ethnicity, religion and ideology. They are a beautiful group, full of vision and grit, and a determination to do what is right, not easy. The group itself enables individual leaders to endure the loneliness that is part of the work.

And then we measure what matters rather than just what we can count. Take this all together and you see our mission to do what it takes to build a world in which all of us have the chance to dream and to flourish, not from a place of easy sentimentality but through a commitment to using the tools of capitalism and the attributes of moral leadership to focus on doing what it takes, and no less.

viajando ao redor do mundos estes dias
00:19
talking to groups of students and professionals,
2

3000
falando a grupos de estudantes e profissionais.
00:22
and everywhere I'm finding that I hear similar themes.
3
7000
3000
00:25
On the one hand, people say,
4
10000
2000
Por um lado, as pessoas dizem,
00:27
"The time for change is now."
5
12000
2000
"O tempo para mudança é agora ".
00:29
They want to be part of it.
6
14000
2000
Elas querem ser parte disto.
00:31
They talk about wanting lives of purpose and greater meaning.
7
16000
3000
00:34
But on the other hand,
8
19000
2000
Mas por outro lado,
00:36
I hear people talking about fear,
9
21000
2000
eu ouço pessoas falando sobre medo,
00:38
a sense of risk-aversion.
10
23000
2000
um sentido de aversão ao risco.
00:40
They say, "I really want to follow a life of purpose,
11
25000
2000
00:42
but I don't know where to start.
12
27000
2000
mas eu não sei por onde começar.
00:44
I don't want to disappoint my family or friends."

00:47
I work in global poverty.
14

2000
Eu trabalho na pobreza global.
00:49
And they say, "I want to work in global poverty,
15
34000
2000
E eles dizem. "Eu quero trabalhar na pobreza global,
00:51
but what will it mean about my career?
16
36000
2000
00:53
Will I be marginalized?
17
38000
2000
Eu vou ser marginalizado?
00:55
Will I not make enough money?
18
40000
2000
Eu não vou ganhar o suficiente?
00:57
Will I never get married or have children?"
19
42000
2000
Eu nunca vou casar ou ter filhos?
00:59
And as a woman who didn't get married until I was a lot older --
20
44000
3000
01:02
and I'm glad I waited --
21
47000
2000
e eu estou satisfeita eu esperei -

- e não ter filhos.
01:08
I look at these young people
24
53000
2000
Eu olho para estas pessoas jovens
01:10
and I say, "Your job is not to be perfect.
25
55000
2000
e eu digo. "O seu trabalho não é para ser perfeito.
01:12
Your job is only to be human.
26
57000
2000
01:14
And nothing important happens in life
27
59000
3000
E nada importante acontece na vida
01:17
without a cost."
28
62000
3000
sem um custo".
01:20
These conversations really reflect what's happening
29
65000
2000
01:22
at the national and international level.
30
67000
2000
no nível nacional e internacional.
01:24
Our leaders and ourselves
31
69000
2000
Nossos lideres e nós mesmos
01:26
want everything,
32
71000
2000
querem tudo,
01:28
but we don't talk about the costs.
33
73000
2000
mas nós não falamos sobre os custos,
01:30
We don't talk about the sacrifice.
34
75000
3000
nós não falamos sobre o sacrifício.
01:33
One of my favorite quotes from literature
35
78000
2000
Uma das minhas citações favoritas da literatura
01:35
was written by Tillie Olsen,
36
80000
2000
foi escrita por Tillie Olsen,
01:37
the great American writer from the South.
37
82000
2000
a grande escritora americana do Sul.
01:39
In a short story called "Oh Yes,"
38
84000
3000
Em uma pequena estoria chamada "Oh Sim",
01:42
she talks about a white woman in the 1950s
39
87000
2000
01:44
who has a daughter
40
89000
2000
que tinha uma filha
01:46
who befriends a little African American girl,
41
91000
3000
01:49
and she looks at her child with a sense of pride,
42
94000
3000
01:52
but she also wonders,
43
97000
2000
mas ela também se pergunta
01:54
what price will she pay?
44
99000
2000
que preço ela iria pagar?
01:56
"Better immersion
45
101000
2000
"Melhor imersão
01:58
than to live untouched."
46
103000
2000
do que viver intocável".
02:00
But the real question is,
47
105000
2000
Mas a pergunta verdadeira é,
02:02
what is the cost of not daring?
48
107000
2000
qual é o custo de não ousar?
02:04
What is the cost of not trying?
49
109000
3000
Qual é o custo de não tentar?
02:07
I've been so privileged in my life
50
112000
2000
Eu tenho sido tão privilegiada na minha vida
02:09
to know extraordinary leaders
51
114000
2000
em conhecer líderes extraordinários
02:11
who have chosen to live lives of immersion.
52
116000
3000
que escolheram viver vidas de imersão.
02:14
One woman I knew who was a fellow
53
119000
2000
02:16
at a program that I ran at the Rockefeller Foundation
54
121000
2000
02:18
was named Ingrid Washinawatok.
55
123000
2000
era chamada Ingrid Washinawatok
02:20
She was a leader of the Menominee tribe,
56
125000
3000
Ela era a líder da tribo Menominee,
02:23
a Native American peoples.
57
128000
2000
um grupo nativo americano.
02:25
And when we would gather as fellows,
58
130000
2000
E quando nós nos reunimos como companheiras,
02:27
she would push us to think about
59
132000
3000
ela nos incentivou a pensar sobre
02:30
how the elders in Native American culture
60
135000
3000
como os idosos na cultura Nativa Americana
02:33
make decisions.
61
138000
2000
tomam decisões.
02:35
And she said they would literally visualize
62
140000
2000
E ela disse que eles literalmente visualizavam
02:37
the faces of children
63
142000
2000
os rostos das crianças
02:39
for seven generations into the future,
64
144000
2000
por sete gerações futuras
02:41
looking at them from the Earth,
65
146000
3000
olhando para elas da Terra.
02:44
and they would look at them, holding them as stewards
66
149000
2000
E eles as olhariam, segurando-as como zeladores
02:46
for that future.
67
151000
2000
para aquele futuro.
02:48
Ingrid understood that we are connected to each other,
68
153000
2000
02:50
not only as human beings,
69
155000
2000
não somento como seres humanos,
02:52
but to every living thing on the planet.
70
157000
3000
02:55
And tragically, in 1999,
71
160000
2000
E tragicamente em 1999
02:57
when she was in Colombia
72
162000
2000
quando ela estava na Colômbia
02:59
working with the U'wa people,
73
164000
2000
trabalhando com o povo U'wa
03:01
focused on preserving their culture and language,
74
166000
3000
03:04
she and two colleagues were abducted
75
169000
2000
ela e duas colegas foram seqüestradas
03:06
and tortured and killed by the FARC.
76
171000
4000
torturadas e mortas pelas FARC.
03:10
And whenever we would gather the fellows after that,
77
175000
3000
03:13
we would leave a chair empty for her spirit.
78
178000
3000
03:16
And more than a decade later,
79
181000
3000
E mais do que uma década depois,
03:19
when I talk to NGO fellows,
80
184000
2000
03:21
whether in Trenton, New Jersey or the office of the White House,
81
186000
3000
03:24
and we talk about Ingrid,
82
189000
3000
e nós falamos sobre a Ingrid,
03:27
they all say that they're trying to integrate her wisdom
83
192000
2000
03:29
and her spirit
84
194000
2000
e seu espírito
03:31
and really build on the unfulfilled work
85
196000
3000
e realmente concluir um trabalho incompleto.
03:34
of her life's mission.
86
199000
2000
na missão de vida dela.
03:36
And when we think about legacy,
87
201000
2000
E quando nós pensamos sobre missão,
03:38
I can think of no more powerful one,
88
203000
2000
03:40
despite how short her life was.
89
205000
3000
apesar da breve vida que ela teve.
03:44
And I've been touched by Cambodian women --
90
209000
2000
E eu tenho sido sensibilizada pelas mulheres cambojanas.
03:46
beautiful women,
91
211000
2000
lindas mulheres,
03:48
women who held the tradition of the classical dance in Cambodia.
92
213000
3000
03:51
And I met them in the early '90s.
93
216000
3000
E eu as encontrei no começos dos anos 90.
03:54
In the 1970s, under the Pol Pot regime,
94
219000
2000
03:56
the Khmer Rouge killed over a million people,
95
221000
3000
03:59
and they focused and targeted the elites and the intellectuals,
96
224000
3000
04:02
the artists, the dancers.
97
227000
2000
os artistas e os dançarinos.
04:04
And at the end of the war,
98
229000
2000
E no final da guerra,
04:06
there were only 30 of these classical dancers still living.
99
231000
3000
havia somente 30 destes dançarinos clássicos ainda vivos.
04:09
And the women, who I was so privileged to meet
100
234000
3000
E as mulheres as quais eu tive o privilégio de encontrar
04:12
when there were three survivors,
101
237000
2000
quando havia três sobreviventes
04:14
told these stories about lying in their cots
102
239000
2000
04:16
in the refugee camps.
103
241000
2000
nos campos de refugiados.
04:18
They said they would try so hard
104
243000
2000
Elas diziam que se esforçavam tanto
04:20
to remember the fragments of the dance,
105
245000
3000
para lembrar os fragmentos da dança
04:23
hoping that others were alive and doing the same.
106
248000
3000
04:26
And one woman stood there with this perfect carriage,
107
251000
3000
04:29
her hands at her side,
108
254000
2000
suas mãos ao seu lado,
04:31
and she talked about
109
256000
2000
e ela falou a respeito
04:33
the reunion of the 30 after the war
110
258000
2000
da reunião das 30 depois da guerra
04:35
and how extraordinary it was.
111
260000
2000
e como ela foi extraordinária.
04:37
And these big tears fell down her face,
112
262000
2000
E grandes lágrimas rolaram por sua face,
04:39
but she never lifted her hands to move them.
113
264000
3000
04:42
And the women decided that they would train
114
267000
3000
E as mulheres decidiram que elas iriam treinar
04:45
not the next generation of girls, because they had grown too old already,
115
270000
3000
04:48
but the next generation.
116
273000
2000
mas a geração seguinte.
04:50
And I sat there in the studio
117
275000
2000
E eu sentei lá no estúdio
04:52
watching these women clapping their hands --
118
277000
2000
observando estas mulheres baterem palmas -
04:54
beautiful rhythms --
119
279000
2000
um rítmo bonito -
04:56
as these little fairy pixies
120
281000
2000
a medida que estas pequenos duendes fadas
04:58
were dancing around them,
121
283000
2000
estavam dançando ao redor delas,
05:00
wearing these beautiful silk colors.
122
285000
2000
vestindo estas lindas sedas coloridas.
05:02
And I thought, after all this atrocity,
123
287000
3000
05:05
this is how human beings really pray.
124
290000
3000
05:08
Because they're focused on honoring
125
293000
3000
Porque elas estão focadas em honrar
05:11
what is most beautiful about our past
126
296000
3000
05:14
and building it into
127
299000
2000
e construi-lo como
05:16
the promise of our future.
128
301000
2000
a promessa para o nosso futuro.
05:18
And what these women understood
129
303000
2000
E o que estas mulheres entenderam
05:20
is sometimes the most important things that we do
130
305000
2000
05:22
and that we spend our time on
131
307000
2000
e na qual usamos o nosso tempo
05:24
are those things that we cannot measure.
132
309000
3000
05:28
I also have been touched
133
313000
2000
Eu também fui tocada
05:30
by the dark side of power and leadership.
134
315000
3000
05:33
And I have learned that power,
135
318000
2000
E eu aprendi que aquele poder,
05:35
particularly in its absolute form,
136
320000
2000
particularmente na sua forma absoluta
05:37
is an equal opportunity provider.
137
322000
3000
é um provedor de oportunidades únicas.
05:40
In 1986, I moved to Rwanda,
138
325000
2000
Em 1986, eu me mudei para Ruanda
05:42
and I worked with a very small group of Rwandan women
139
327000
3000
05:45
to start that country's first microfinance bank.
140
330000
2000
05:47
And one of the women was Agnes --
141
332000
3000
E uma das mulheres era Agnes -
05:50
there on your extreme left --
142
335000
2000
aqui na ponta esquerda -
05:52
she was one of the first three
143
337000
2000
ela era uma das três primeiras
05:54
women parliamentarians in Rwanda,
144
339000
2000
mulheres parlamentares em Ruanda
05:56
and her legacy should have been
145
341000
2000
e a sua missão deveria ter sido
05:58
to be one of the mothers of Rwanda.
146
343000
3000
se tornar uma das líderes de Ruanda.
06:01
We built this institution based on social justice,
147
346000
2000
06:03
gender equity,
148
348000
2000
igualdade de sexos,
06:05
this idea of empowering women.
149
350000
3000
esta idéia de promover a mulher.
06:09
But Agnes cared more about the trappings of power
150
354000
3000
06:12
than she did principle at the end.
151
357000
2000
no final mais do que no princípio.
06:14
And though she had been part of building a liberal party,
152
359000
3000
E embora ela tenha participado da construção do partido liberal,
06:17
a political party
153
362000
2000
um partido político
06:19
that was focused on diversity and tolerance,
154
364000
3000
06:22
about three months before the genocide, she switched parties
155
367000
2000
cerca de três meses antes do genocídio, ela trocou de lado
06:24
and joined the extremist party, Hutu Power,
156
369000
3000
06:27
and she became the Minister of Justice
157
372000
2000
e ela se tornou ministra da justiça
06:29
under the genocide regime
158
374000
2000
sobre o regime do genocídio
06:31
and was known for inciting men to kill faster
159
376000
3000
06:34
and stop behaving like women.
160
379000
2000
e pararem de se comportar como mulheres.
06:36
She was convicted
161
381000
2000
Ela foi condenada
06:38
of category one crimes of genocide.
162
383000
3000
na categoria um de crimes de genocídio.
06:41
And I would visit her in the prisons,
163
386000
3000
E eu gostaria de visitá-la na prisão
06:44
sitting side-by-side, knees touching,
164
389000
3000
sentar lado a lado, joelhos se tocando
06:47
and I would have to admit to myself
165
392000
2000
06:49
that monsters exist in all of us,
166
394000
3000
que monstros existem em todos nós,
06:52
but that maybe it's not monsters so much,
167
397000
2000
06:54
but the broken parts of ourselves,
168
399000
3000
mas as partes quebradas de nós mesmos,
06:57
sadnesses, secret shame,
169
402000
3000
tristeza, vergonha escondida,
07:00
and that ultimately it's easy for demagogues
170
405000
3000
07:03
to prey on those parts,
171
408000
2000
atacar naquelas partes,
07:05
those fragments, if you will,
172
410000
2000
naqueles fragmentos, se vocês preferirem,
07:07
and to make us look at other beings, human beings,
173
412000
3000
07:10
as lesser than ourselves --
174
415000
3000
como inferiores a nós -
07:13
and in the extreme, to do terrible things.
175
418000
3000
e no extremo, fazer coisas horríveis.
07:16
And there is no group
176
421000
2000
E nào há nenhum grupo
07:18
more vulnerable to those kinds of manipulations
177
423000
3000
mais vulnerável àquele tipo de manipulação
07:21
than young men.
178
426000
2000
do que homens jovens.
07:23
I've heard it said that the most dangerous animal on the planet
179
428000
3000
07:26
is the adolescent male.
180
431000
2000
é um jovem adolescente.
07:28
And so in a gathering
181
433000
2000
E então num grupo
07:30
where we're focused on women,
182
435000
2000
onde nós estamos focados nas mulheres,
07:32
while it is so critical that we invest in our girls
183
437000
3000
07:35
and we even the playing field
184
440000
2000
e nós mesmos no campo de jogo
07:37
and we find ways to honor them,
185
442000
3000
encontremos meios para honrá-las,
07:40
we have to remember that the girls and the women
186
445000
3000
nós temos que lembrar que as garotas e as mulheres
07:43
are most isolated and violated
187
448000
2000
são mais isoladas e violentadas
07:45
and victimized and made invisible
188
450000
2000
e vitimizadas e tornadas invisíveis
07:47
in those very societies
189
452000
2000
naquelas sociedades
07:49
where our men and our boys
190
454000
2000
onde nossos homens e nossos garotos
07:51
feel disempowered,
191
456000
2000
se sentem desencorajados
07:53
unable to provide.
192
458000
2000
incapazes de realizar.
07:55
And that, when they sit on those street corners
193
460000
3000
E quando eles sentam naquelas esquinas
07:58
and all they can think of in the future
194
463000
2000
08:00
is no job, no education,
195
465000
2000
é desemprego, falta de educação
08:02
no possibility,
196
467000
2000
falta de possibilidades,
08:04
well then it's easy to understand
197
469000
2000
bem então é fácil de entender
08:06
how the greatest source of status
198
471000
2000
como os maiores escalões do poder
08:08
can come from a uniform
199
473000
2000
podem vir com um uniforme
08:10
and a gun.
200
475000
2000
e uma arma.
08:12
Sometimes very small investments
201
477000
2000
Algumas vezes pequenos investimentos
08:14
can release enormous, infinite potential
202
479000
2000
podem liberar enormes e infinitos potenciais
08:16
that exists in all of us.
203
481000
2000
que existem em todos nós.
08:18
One of the Acumen Fund fellows at my organization,
204
483000
2000
08:20
Suraj Sudhakar,
205
485000
2000
Suraj Sudhakar,
08:22
has what we call moral imagination --
206
487000
3000
tem o que nós chamamos imaginação moral -
08:25
the ability to put yourself in another person's shoes
207
490000
2000
a habilidade de se colocar no lugar do outro
08:27
and lead from that perspective.
208
492000
2000
e ver daquela perspectiva.
08:29
And he's been working with this young group of men
209
494000
4000
08:33
who come from the largest slum in the world, Kibera.
210
498000
3000
08:36
And they're incredible guys.
211
501000
2000
E eles são pessoas incríveis.
08:38
And together they started a book club
212
503000
2000
E juntos eles iniciaram um clube do livro
08:40
for a hundred people in the slums,
213
505000
2000
para cem pessoas nas favelas,
08:42
and they're reading many TED authors and liking it.
214
507000
3000
08:45
And then they created a business plan competition.
215
510000
3000
08:48
Then they decided that they would do TEDx's.
216
513000
3000
E aí eles decidiram que fariam parte do TEDx's.
08:51
And I have learned so much
217
516000
2000
E eu tenho aprendido tanto
08:53
from Chris and Kevin
218
518000
2000
do Chirs e do Kevin
08:55
and Alex and Herbert
219
520000
2000
do Alex e do Herbert
08:57
and all of these young men.
220
522000
2000
e de todos estes jovens.
08:59
Alex, in some ways, said it best.
221
524000
2000
Alex, de certa maneira, disse o melhor.
09:01
He said, "We used to feel like nobodies,
222
526000
2000
09:03
but now we feel like somebodies."
223
528000
2000
mas agora nós nos sentimos como alguém".
09:05
And I think we have it all wrong
224
530000
2000
E eu penso que nós temos a concepção errada
09:07
when we think that income is the link.
225
532000
2000
09:09
What we really yearn for as human beings
226
534000
2000
09:11
is to be visible to each other.
227
536000
3000
é sermos visíveis um ao outro.
09:14
And the reason these young guys
228
539000
2000
E a razão desses jovens garotos
09:16
told me that they're doing these TEDx's
229
541000
2000
me dizerem que eles estão fazendo estes TEDx's
09:18
is because they were sick and tired
230
543000
2000
é porque eles estavam doentes e cansados♫
09:20
of the only workshops coming to the slums
231
545000
3000
09:23
being those workshops focused on HIV,
232
548000
3000
serem aqueles eventos focados em HIV,
09:26
or at best, microfinance.
233
551000
2000
ou no melhor, em microfinanças.
09:28
And they wanted to celebrate
234
553000
2000
E eles queriam celebrar
09:30
what's beautiful about Kibera and Mathare --
235
555000
3000
09:33
the photojournalists and the creatives,
236
558000
2000
os fotojornalistas e os criativos,
09:35
the graffiti artists, the teachers and the entrepreneurs.
237
560000
3000
09:38
And they're doing it.
238
563000
2000
E eles estão conseguindo.
09:40
And my hat's off to you in Kibera.
239
565000
3000
E eu tiro o meu chapéu para Kibera.
09:43
My own work focuses
240
568000
2000
Meu trabalho é focado
09:45
on making philanthropy more effective
241
570000
3000
em fazer a filantropia mais eficiente
09:48
and capitalism more inclusive.
242
573000
3000
e o capitalimo mais inclusivo.
09:51
At Acumen Fund, we take philanthropic resources
243
576000
3000
No Fundo Acumen nós recebemos recursos filantrópicos
09:54
and we invest what we call patient capital --
244
579000
2000
09:56
money that will invest in entrepreneurs who see the poor
245
581000
3000
09:59
not as passive recipients of charity,
246
584000
2000
não como recipientes passivos para caridade
10:01
but as full-bodied agents of change
247
586000
2000
mas como agentes completos de mudança
10:03
who want to solve their own problems
248
588000
2000
que querem resolver seus próprios problemas
10:05
and make their own decisions.
249
590000
2000
e tomar suas próprias decisões.
10:07
We leave our money for 10 to 15 years,
250
592000
2000
Nós deixamos nosso dinheiro por 10 a 15 anos,
10:09
and when we get it back, we invest in other innovations
251
594000
2000
10:11
that focus on change.
252
596000
2000
focadas em mudaças.
10:13
I know it works.
253
598000
2000
Eu sei que funciona.
10:15
We've invested more than 50 million dollars in 50 companies,
254
600000
3000
10:18
and those companies have brought another 200 million dollars
255
603000
3000
E àquelas empresas trouxeram outros US$ 200 milhões
10:21
into these forgotten markets.
256
606000
2000
nestes mercados esquecidos.
10:23
This year alone, they've delivered 40 million services
257
608000
3000
10:26
like maternal health care and housing,
258
611000
2000
como saúde materna e habitação,
10:28
emergency services, solar energy,
259
613000
3000
serviços de emergência, energia solar.
10:31
so that people can have more dignity
260
616000
2000
10:33
in solving their problems.
261
618000
2000
em resolver seus problemas.
10:36
Patient capital is uncomfortable
262
621000
2000
Investimentos de longo prazo são desconfortáveis
10:38
for people searching for simple solutions,
263
623000
2000
para pessoas procurando por soluções simples,
10:40
easy categories,
264
625000
2000
categorias fáceis,
10:42
because we don't see profit as a blunt instrument.
265
627000
3000
10:45
But we find those entrepreneurs
266
630000
2000
Mas nós encontramos aqueles empresários
10:47
who put people and the planet
267
632000
2000
que colocam as pessoas e o planeta
10:49
before profit.
268
634000
2000
antes do lucro.
10:51
And ultimately, we want to be part of a movement
269
636000
3000
10:54
that is about measuring impact,
270
639000
2000
que é sobre avaliação de impacto
10:56
measuring what is most important to us.
271
641000
3000
10:59
And my dream is we'll have a world one day
272
644000
3000
11:02
where we don't just honor those who take money
273
647000
2000
11:04
and make more money from it,
274
649000
2000
e fazem mais dinheiro com ele,
11:06
but we find those individuals who take our resources
275
651000
3000
11:09
and convert it into changing the world
276
654000
2000
e os convertem mudando o mundo
11:11
in the most positive ways.
277
656000
2000
de maneiras mais positivas.
11:13
And it's only when we honor them
278
658000
2000
E é somente quando os honramos
11:15
and celebrate them and give them status
279
660000
2000
e os celebramos e lhes damos status
11:17
that the world will really change.
280
662000
3000
que o mundo irá realmente mudar.
11:20
Last May I had this extraordinary 24-hour period
281
665000
3000
11:23
where I saw two visions of the world
282
668000
2000
onde eu vi duas visões do mundo
11:25
living side-by-side --
283
670000
2000
vivendo lado a lado -
11:27
one based on violence
284
672000
2000
uma baseada na violência
11:29
and the other on transcendence.
285
674000
2000
e na outra na transcendência.
11:31
I happened to be in Lahore, Pakistan
286
676000
2000
Eu estava em Lahore, Paquistão
11:33
on the day that two mosques were attacked
287
678000
2000
11:35
by suicide bombers.
288
680000
2000
por terroristas suicídas.
11:37
And the reason these mosques were attacked
289
682000
2000
11:39
is because the people praying inside
290
684000
2000
era porque as pessoas que rezavam nelas
11:41
were from a particular sect of Islam
291
686000
2000
eram de uma seita particular do Islam
11:43
who fundamentalists don't believe are fully Muslim.
292
688000
3000
11:46
And not only did those suicide bombers
293
691000
2000
E aqueles terroristas suícidas não apenas
11:48
take a hundred lives,
294
693000
2000
tiraram uma centena de vidas
11:50
but they did more,
295
695000
2000
mas eles fizeram mais
11:52
because they created more hatred, more rage, more fear
296
697000
3000
porque eles criaram mais ódio, mais raiva, mais medo
11:55
and certainly despair.
297
700000
3000
e certamente desespero.
11:58
But less than 24 hours,
298
703000
2000
Porém menos de 24 horas
12:00
I was 13 miles away from those mosques,
299
705000
3000
eu estava a 20 quilômetros daquelas mesquitas,
12:03
visiting one of our Acumen investees,
300
708000
2000
visitando um dos investidores da nossa Fundação,
12:05
an incredible man, Jawad Aslam,
301
710000
2000
um homem incrível, Jawad Aslam,
12:07
who dares to live a life of immersion.
302
712000
3000
que ousa viver uma vida de imersão.
12:10
Born and raised in Baltimore,
303
715000
2000
Nascido e criado em Baltimore,
12:12
he studied real estate, worked in commercial real estate,
304
717000
3000
ele estudou negócios imobiliários, trabalhou em negócios imobiliários comerciais
12:15
and after 9/11 decided he was going to Pakistan to make a difference.
305
720000
3000
12:18
For two years, he hardly made any money, a tiny stipend,
306
723000
3000
12:21
but he apprenticed with this incredible housing developer
307
726000
3000
mas ele aprendeu com este incrível construtor
12:24
named Tasneem Saddiqui.
308
729000
3000
chamado Tasneem Saddiqui.
12:27
And he had a dream that he would build a housing community
309
732000
2000
12:29
on this barren piece of land
310
734000
2000
neste estéril pedaço de terra
12:31
using patient capital,
311
736000
2000
usando investimentos de longo prazo,
12:33
but he continued to pay a price.
312
738000
2000
mas ele continuou pagando um preço.
12:35
He stood on moral ground
313
740000
2000
Ele manteve a moralidade
12:37
and refused to pay bribes.
314
742000
2000
e recusou pagar propinas.
12:39
It took almost two years just to register the land.
315
744000
3000
12:42
But I saw how the level of moral standard can rise
316
747000
3000
12:45
from one person's action.
317
750000
3000
através da ação de uma pessoa.
12:48
Today, 2,000 people live in 300 houses
318
753000
3000
Hoje, duas mil pessoas vivem em 300 casas
12:51
in this beautiful community.
319
756000
2000
nesta bonita comunidade.
12:53
And there's schools and clinics and shops.
320
758000
3000
E há escolas e clínicas e lojas.
12:56
But there's only one mosque.
321
761000
2000
Mas há somente uma mesquita.
12:58
And so I asked Jawad,
322
763000
2000
E então eu perguntei a Jawad,
13:00
"How do you guys navigate? This is a really diverse community.
323
765000
3000
"Como vocês coordenam? Esta é uma comunidade diversa.
13:03
Who gets to use the mosque on Fridays?"
324
768000
2000
Quem utiliza a mesquita nas sextas-feiras?".
13:05
He said, "Long story.
325
770000
2000
Ele disse: "É uma longa história.
13:07
It was hard, it was a difficult road,
326
772000
3000
Foi duro. Foi uma jornada difícil,
13:10
but ultimately the leaders of the community came together,
327
775000
3000
13:13
realizing we only have each other.
328
778000
3000
13:16
And we decided that we would elect
329
781000
2000
E nós decidimos que iríamos eleger
13:18
the three most respected imams,
330
783000
2000
os três mais respeitados líderes religiosos
13:20
and those imams would take turns,
331
785000
2000
e àqueles líderes fariam rodízio,
13:22
they would rotate who would say Friday prayer.
332
787000
2000
eles iriam revezar quem faria as preces nas sextas-feiras.
13:24
But the whole community,
333
789000
2000
Mas toda a comunidade
13:26
all the different sects, including Shi'a and Sunni,
334
791000
3000
todas as diferentes seitas, incluindo Shia e Sunni,
13:29
would sit together and pray."
335
794000
3000
sentariam juntas e rezariam."
13:32
We need that kind of moral leadership and courage
336
797000
2000
Nós precisamos aquele tipo de liderança moral e coragem
13:34
in our worlds.
337
799000
2000
em nosso mundo.
13:36
We face huge issues as a world --
338
801000
3000
Nós enfrentamos enormes problemas mundiais -
13:39
the financial crisis,
339
804000
2000
a crise financeira,
13:41
global warming
340
806000
2000
o aquecimento global
13:43
and this growing sense of fear and otherness.
341
808000
3000
13:46
And every day we have a choice.
342
811000
3000
E a cada dia nós temos a escolha,
13:49
We can take the easier road,
343
814000
2000
nós podemos pegar o caminho fácil,
13:51
the more cynical road,
344
816000
2000
o mais cínico caminho
13:53
which is a road based on
345
818000
2000
que é um caminho baseado em
13:55
sometimes dreams of a past that never really was,
346
820000
3000
13:58
a fear of each other,
347
823000
3000
o medo uns dos outros,
14:01
distancing and blame.
348
826000
2000
distanciamento e censura,
14:03
Or we can take the much more difficult path
349
828000
3000
14:06
of transformation, transcendence,
350
831000
2000
de transcendente transformação,
14:08
compassion and love,
351
833000
2000
compaixão e amor,
14:10
but also accountability and justice.
352
835000
3000
mas também de responsabilidade e justiça.
14:14
I had the great honor
353
839000
2000
Eu tive a grande honra
14:16
of working with the child psychologist Dr. Robert Coles,
354
841000
3000
14:19
who stood up for change
355
844000
2000
que se levantou para uma mudança
14:21
during the Civil Rights movement in the United States.
356
846000
3000
14:24
And he tells this incredible story
357
849000
2000
E ele conta esta história incrível
14:26
about working with a little six-year-old girl named Ruby Bridges,
358
851000
3000
14:29
the first child to desegregate schools in the South --
359
854000
3000
a primeira criança a vencer a segregação nas escolas do Sul -
14:32
in this case, New Orleans.
360
857000
2000
neste caso New Orleans.
14:34
And he said that every day
361
859000
2000
E ele disse que todos os dias
14:36
this six-year-old, dressed in her beautiful dress,
362
861000
2000
14:38
would walk with real grace
363
863000
2000
caminhava com uma graça real
14:40
through a phalanx of white people
364
865000
3000
através de um grupo de pessoas brancas
14:43
screaming angrily, calling her a monster,
365
868000
2000
gritando irritadamente, chamando-a de monstro
14:45
threatening to poison her --
366
870000
2000
ameaçando envenena-lá -
14:47
distorted faces.
367
872000
2000
faces distorcidas.
14:49
And every day he would watch her,
368
874000
2000
e todos os dias ele a observava,
14:51
and it looked like she was talking to the people.
369
876000
2000
14:53
And he would say, "Ruby, what are you saying?"
370
878000
2000
14:55
And she'd say, "I'm not talking."
371
880000
2000
E ela disse. "Eu não estou falando"
14:57
And finally he said, "Ruby, I see that you're talking.
372
882000
2000
14:59
What are you saying?"
373
884000
2000
O que você está dizendo?".
15:01
And she said, "Dr. Coles, I am not talking;
374
886000
2000
E ela disse, "Dr. Coles, eu não estou falando.,
15:03
I'm praying."
375
888000
2000
Eu estou rezando".
15:05
And he said, "Well, what are you praying?"
376
890000
3000
15:08
And she said, "I'm praying, 'Father, forgive them,
377
893000
2000
E ela disse. "Eu estou rezando. Pai perdoe-os
15:10
for they know not what they are doing.'"
378
895000
3000
15:13
At age six,
379
898000
2000
Com seis anos de idade
15:15
this child was living a life of immersion,
380
900000
3000
15:18
and her family paid a price for it.
381
903000
2000
15:20
But she became part of history
382
905000
2000
Mas ela se tornou parte da história
15:22
and opened up this idea
383
907000
2000
e abriu esta idéia
15:24
that all of us should have access to education.
384
909000
3000
15:29
My final story is about a young, beautiful man
385
914000
2000
15:31
named Josephat Byaruhanga,
386
916000
2000
chamado Josepha Byaruhanga
15:33
who was another Acumen Fund fellow,
387
918000
2000
que era outro complanheiro na Fundação Acumen
15:35
who hails from Uganda, a farming community.
388
920000
3000
15:38
And we placed him in a company in Western Kenya,
389
923000
3000
15:41
just 200 miles away.
390
926000
2000
há 320 Km de distância.
15:43
And he said to me at the end of his year,
391
928000
3000
E ele me disse no final do ano,
15:46
"Jacqueline, it was so humbling,
392
931000
2000
"Jaqueline, era tão humilhante,
15:48
because I thought as a farmer and as an African
393
933000
3000
15:51
I would understand how to transcend culture.
394
936000
2000
eu iria entender como transcender a cultura.
15:53
But especially when I was talking to the African women,
395
938000
3000
15:56
I sometimes made these mistakes --
396
941000
2000
eu às vezes cometia estes erros -
15:58
it was so hard for me to learn how to listen."
397
943000
2000
16:00
And he said, "So I conclude that, in many ways,
398
945000
2000
16:02
leadership is like a panicle of rice.
399
947000
3000
liderança é como uma panícula de arroz.
16:05
Because at the height of the season,
400
950000
2000
Porque no alto da estação,
16:07
at the height of its powers,
401
952000
2000
no alto da sua potência,
16:09
it's beautiful, it's green, it nourishes the world,
402
954000
3000
é bonita, é verde, alimenta o mundo,
16:12
it reaches to the heavens."
403
957000
2000
ela chega aos céus."
16:14
And he said, "But right before the harvest,
404
959000
3000
E ele disse. "Mas logo antes da colheita,
16:17
it bends over
405
962000
2000
ela se curva
16:19
with great gratitude and humility
406
964000
2000
com grande gratidão e humildade
16:21
to touch the earth from where it came."
407
966000
3000
16:25
We need leaders.
408
970000
2000
Nós precisamos de líderes.
16:27
We ourselves need to lead
409
972000
3000
Nós mesmos precisamos liderar
16:30
from a place that has the audacity
410
975000
2000
de um lugar que tenha a audácia
16:32
to believe we can, ourselves,
411
977000
2000
para acreditar que nós podemos
16:34
extend the fundamental assumption
412
979000
2000
extender o pressuposto fundamental
16:36
that all men are created equal
413
981000
3000
que todos os homens são criados iguais
16:39
to every man, woman and child on this planet.
414
984000
3000
a cada homem, mulher e criança neste planeta.
16:42
And we need to have the humility to recognize
415
987000
3000
16:45
that we cannot do it alone.
416
990000
3000
que nós não podemos fazer isto sozinhos.
16:48
Robert Kennedy once said
417
993000
2000
Robert Kennedy uma vez disse
16:50
that "few of us have the greatness to bend history itself,
418
995000
3000
16:53
but each of us can work
419
998000
3000
mas cada um de nós pode trabalhar
16:56
to change a small portion of events."
420
1001000
3000
para mudar uma pequena parte dos eventos.
16:59
And it is in the total of all those acts
421
1004000
3000
17:02
that the history of this generation will be written.
422
1007000
3000
que a história desta geração será escrita."
17:05
Our lives are so short,
423
1010000
3000
Nossas vidas são tão curtas
17:08
and our time on this planet
424
1013000
2000
e nosso tempo neste planeta
17:10
is so precious,
425
1015000
2000
é tão precioso,
17:12
and all we have is each other.
426
1017000
3000
e tudo que nós temos é um ao outro.
17:15
So may each of you
427
1020000
2000
Então possam cada um de vocês
17:17
live lives of immersion.
428
1022000
3000
viver vidas de imersão.
17:20
They won't necessarily be easy lives,
429
1025000
3000
Elas não serão vidas necessariamente fáceis,
17:23
but in the end, it is all that will sustain us.
430
1028000
4000
17:27
Thank you.
431
1032000
2000
Muito obrigado

Aplausos.
