ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Theaster Gates - Artist, potter, community builder
Theaster Gates is a potter whose ambitions stretch far beyond the wheel and the kiln. In Chicago, his leadership of artist-led spaces has catalyzed interest and excitement in a formerly neglected neighborhood, as he uses culture as a transformational weapon.

Why you should listen

Theaster Gates is helping to define the future of artistic place-based efforts, in research and practice. Beginning with interventions in small-scale residences now known as Dorchester Projects, Gates’ houses in Greater Grand Crossing in Chicago have become a nexus for globally engaged experiments in structures of individual and collective living, working and art-making. Launched into the international art world at Documenta(13), the houses embodied a new system of values and celebrated both a flexible use of space and provided a way for artists, visitors and students to connect and collaborate.

The latest example of this kind of work is the Stony Island Arts Bank, set to open for the Chicago Architecture Biennial in October 2015. Gates will convert a formerly derelict bank on Chicago's south side to create an artwork -- and a communal and creative space.

At the University of Chicago, where he is a professor and the director of arts and public life, Gates leads the Arts Incubator in Washington Park. Gates also leads an urban research initiative known as the Place Lab, a team of social scientists, architects, creative professionals and business leaders. With support from the Knight Foundation, Gates and his team will create frameworks for reimagining the role that culture plays in the redevelopment of transforming African American communities.

Theaster Gates: How to revive a neighborhood: with imagination, beauty and art

00:14
I'm a potter,
0
2206

00:17
which seems like a fairly humble vocation.
1
5224
4525
o que parece ser uma vocação bem modesta.
00:21
I know a lot about pots.
2
9749
2880
Sei muito sobre vasos.
00:24
I've spent about 15 years making them.
3
12629

Gastei mais ou menos 15 anos fazendo-os.
Uma das coisas que me estimula
em minha atividade artística,
00:28
One of the things that really
excites me in my artistic practice
4
16309
3030
00:31
and being trained as a potter
5
19339
2717
e sendo treinado como oleiro,
00:34
is that you very quickly learn
how to make great things out of nothing;
6
22056
5444
é que você rapidamente aprende como fazer
coisas grandiosas a partir do nada;
00:39
that I spent a lot of time at my wheel
with mounds of clay trying stuff;
7
27500
6783
passei muito tempo na minha roda
tentando fazer coisas com argila;
00:46
and that the limitations
of my capacity, my ability,

e as limitações da minha capacidade,
minha habilidade,
00:49
was based on my hands and my imagination;
9
37775
2731
estavam nas minhas mãos
e minha imaginação;
00:52
that if I wanted to make
a really nice bowl
10
40506
2200
se quisesse fazer um vaso bem bonito
00:54
and I didn't know how to make a foot yet,
11
42706
2104
e não soubesse como fazer o pé ainda,
00:56
I would have to learn how to make a foot;
12
44810
3019
teria que aprender como fazê-lo;
esse processo de aprendizagem
tem sido muito, muito útil na minha vida.
00:59
that that process of learning
has been very, very helpful to my life.
13
47829
4104
01:04
I feel like, as a potter,
14
52983
1974
Eu sinto, como oleiro,
01:06
you also start to learn
how to shape the world.
15
54957
4110
que você também começa
a aprender a moldar o mundo.
01:11
There have been times
in my artistic capacity
16
59067
3111
Houve ocasiões,
em minha aptidão artística,
01:14
that I wanted to reflect
17
62178
2863
que quis refletir
01:17
on other really important moments
18
65041
2663
sobre outros momentos importantes
01:19
in the history of the U.S.,
the history of the world
19
67704
4110
na história dos EUA, na história do mundo
em que coisas árduas aconteceram,
01:23
where tough things happened,
20
71814
1591
01:25
but how do you talk about tough ideas
21
73405
2681
mas como você fala sobre ideias difíceis
01:28
without separating people
from that content?
22
76086
4110
sem separar as pessoas deste contexto?
Eu poderia usar a arte, como estas velhas
mangueiras de incêndio do Alabama,
01:32
Could I use art like these old,
discontinued firehoses from Alabama,
23
80196
5596
para falar sobre as complexidades
dos direitos civis nos anos 60?
01:37
to talk about the complexities of a moment
of civil rights in the '60s?
24
85792
6154
01:43
Is it possible to talk about my father
and I doing labor projects?
25
91946
4851
É possível falar sobre meu pai e eu
fazendo projetos de trabalho?
01:48
My dad was a roofer, construction guy,
he owned small businesses,
26
96797
4157
Meu pai era telhador, uma cara
da construção, tinha pequenos negócios
01:52
and at 80, he was ready to retire
and his tar kettle was my inheritance.
27
100954
5516
e nos anos 80, ao se aposentar, deixou
sua caldeira de asfalto como herança.
01:59
Now, a tar kettle doesn't sound
like much of an inheritance. It wasn't.
28
107850
3809
Bom, uma caldeira de asfalto não parecia
ser bem uma herança, e não era.
02:03
It was stinky and it took up
a lot of space in my studio,
29
111659
3947
Cheirava mal e ocupou bastante
espaço no meu estúdio.
02:07
but I asked my dad if he would be willing
to make some art with me,
30
115606
4295
Mas perguntei ao meu pai
se ele gostaria de fazer arte comigo,
02:11
if we could reimagine this kind
of nothing material
31
119901
3831
se poderíamos reinventar
este tipo de material inútil
02:15
as something very special.
32
123732
2485
como algo muito especial.
02:18
And by elevating the material
and my dad's skill,
33
126217
3390
E ao dar valor a este material,
e a habilidade do meu pai,
02:21
could we start to think about tar
just like clay, in a new way,
34
129607
5018
poderíamos pensar no piche
como barro, de um novo jeito,
02:27
shaping it differently,
helping us to imagine what was possible?
35
135905
4112
moldando-o de modo diferente, ajudando-nos
a imaginar o que seria possível?
02:33
After clay, I was then kind of turned on
to lots of different kinds of materials,
36
141607
4183
Depois do barro, fiquei interessado
em vários tipos de materiais diferentes
02:37
and my studio grew a lot
because I thought, well,
37
145790
2972
e meu estúdio cresceu muito
porque pensei: "Bem,
não é o material,
mas a capacidade de moldar coisas."
02:40
it's not really about the material,
it's about our capacity to shape things.
38
148762
4087
02:44
I became more and more interested in ideas
39
152849
2856
Fiquei cada vez mais
interessado nas ideias
02:47
and more and more things that
were happening just outside my studio.
40
155705
4832
e nas coisas que estavam
acontecendo fora do meu estúdio.
02:53
Just to give you a little bit of context,
I live in Chicago.
41
161897
3199
Só para dar um pouco de contexto,
eu moro em Chicago.
02:57
I live on the South Side now.
I'm a West Sider.
42
165104
3255
Eu moro no Lado Sul agora.
Eu era do Lado Oeste.
03:00
For those of you who are not Chicagoans,
that won't mean anything,
43
168359
3414
Para quem não é de Chicago,
isso não quer dizer nada.
Mas, se eu não dissesse
que era do Lado Oeste,
03:03
but if I didn't mention
that I was a West Sider,
44
171773
2252
muita gente na cidade
ficaria bem chateada.
03:06
there would be a lot of people
in the city that would be very upset.
45
174025
4179
03:10
The neighborhood that I live in
is Grand Crossing.
46
178204
2949
O bairro onde eu moro é Grand Crossing.
03:13
It's a neighborhood
that has seen better days.
47
181153
3042
É um bairro que já teve dias melhores.
03:16
It is not a gated community by far.
48
184976
4095
Está longe de ser um condomínio fechado.
03:21
There is lots of abandonment
in my neighborhood,
49
189071
3134
Há muito abandono em meu bairro,
03:24
and while I was kind of busy
making pots and busy making art
50
192205
3506
e enquanto eu estava ocupado
fazendo vasos e arte,
03:27
and having a good art career,
51
195711
1951
e fazendo uma boa carreira artística,
03:29
there was all of this stuff
that was happening
52
197662
2145
estavam acontecendo várias coisas
03:31
just outside my studio.
53
199807
1793
no lado de fora do meu estúdio.
03:34
All of us know about
failing housing markets
54
202460
3288
Todos nós sabemos sobre o fracasso
do mercado imobiliário
e os desafios da deterioração urbana,
03:37
and the challenges of blight,
55
205748
1832
e sinto que falamos mais sobre isso
em algumas cidades do que em outras,
03:39
and I feel like we talk about it
with some of our cities more than others,
56
207580
3477
mas eu penso que muitas
cidades nos EUA, e outras,
03:43
but I think a lot of our
U.S. cities and beyond
57
211057
2934
enfrentam o desafio da deterioração,
03:45
have the challenge of blight,
58
213991
2020
03:48
abandoned buildings that people
no longer know what to do anything with.
59
216011
4226
construções abandonadas
com as quais não se sabe o que fazer.
Então pensei: "Há uma maneira
de começar a ver
03:52
And so I thought, is there a way
that I could start to think
60
220237
2856
03:55
about these buildings as an extension
or an expansion of my artistic practice?
61
223093
5386
estes lugares como uma extensão
ou expansão da minha prática artística?"
04:00
And that if I was thinking
along with other creatives --
62
228479
3019
E se eu estivesse pensando
com outros criadores,
04:03
architects, engineers,
real estate finance people --
63
231498
3668
arquitetos, engenheiros,
financiadores imobiliários,
04:07
that us together might be able
to kind of think
64
235166
2880
que, juntos, seríamos capazes de pensar,
04:10
in more complicated ways
about the reshaping of cities.
65
238046
3669
de modo mais complexo,
sobre a reformulação das cidades?
04:15
And so I bought a building.
66
243085
1648
E então eu comprei um sobrado.
04:16
The building was really affordable.
67
244733
2740
O preço era acessível.
04:19
We tricked it out.
68
247473
1712
Nós o decoramos.
04:21
We made it as beautiful as we could
to try to just get some activity happening
69
249185
4435
Nós o deixamos o mais bonito possível
para ter alguma atividade acontecendo
04:25
on my block.
70
253620
2252
no meu quarteirão.
Depois que o comprei
por cerca de US$ 18 mil,
04:27
Once I bought the building
for about 18,000 dollars,
71
255872
2438
04:30
I didn't have any money left.
72
258310
2020
fiquei sem dinheiro.
04:32
So I started sweeping the building
as a kind of performance.
73
260330
4179
Então eu comecei a varrê-lo
como um tipo de performance.
04:37
This is performance art,
and people would come over,
74
265599
2742
Isto é performance artística,
e as pessoas chegariam
04:40
and I would start sweeping.
75
268341
1556
e eu começaria a varrer.
04:41
Because the broom was free
and sweeping was free.
76
269897
2647
Porque a vassoura era de graça
e varrer também.
04:44
It worked out.
77
272544
2159
E deu certo.
(Risos)
04:46
(Laughter)
78
274703
2235
04:48
But we would use the building, then,
to stage exhibitions, small dinners,
79
276938
5451
Usamos este lugar para organizar
exposições, pequenos jantares,
04:54
and we found that that building
on my block, Dorchester --
80
282389
3947
e descobrimos que aquele sobrado
no meu quarteirão, Dorchester,
nos referimos ao quarteirão agora
como "projeto Dorchester",
04:58
we now referred to the block
as Dorchester projects --
81
286336
2716
05:01
that in a way that building
became a kind of gathering site
82
289052
3483
poderia se tornar um tipo
de área de encontro
05:04
for lots of different kinds of activity.
83
292535
2234
para vários tipos
de atividades diferentes.
05:06
We turned the building into
what we called now the Archive House.
84
294769
4453
Transformamos o lugar
no que chamamos de "Casa do Arquivo".
05:11
The Archive House would do
all of these amazing things.
85
299222
3181
A Casa do Arquivo poderia
fazer várias coisas incríveis.
05:14
Very significant people
in the city and beyond
86
302403
3344
Pessoas importantes da cidade
e de outros lugares
05:17
would find themselves
in the middle of the hood.
87
305747
2675
se encontrariam no meio do gueto.
E foi quando eu senti
05:20
And that's when I felt like
88
308422
2368
que talvez houvesse uma relação
entre minha história com o barro
05:22
maybe there was a relationship
between my history with clay
89
310790
2812
05:25
and this new thing that was
starting to develop,
90
313602
2570
e esta coisa nova que estava
começando a desenvolver,
05:28
that we were slowly starting
91
316172
2342
que estávamos começando lentamente
05:30
to reshape how people imagined
the South Side of the city.
92
318514
3856
a remodelar o modo como as pessoas
imaginavam o Lado Sul da cidade.
Uma casa acabou virando várias,
05:35
One house turned into a few houses,
93
323440
2182
05:37
and we always tried to suggest
94
325622
2462
e sempre tentamos propor
05:40
that not only is creating
a beautiful vessel important,
95
328084
3924
que não basta apenas criar
um ambiente bonito,
05:44
but the contents of what happens
in those buildings is also very important.
96
332008
3876
mas o que acontece dentro
desses lugares também é importante.
05:47
So we were not only thinking
about development,
97
335884
2648
Não estávamos pensando
apenas em empreendimentos,
05:50
but we were thinking about the program,
98
338532
2322
mas estávamos pensando sobre o programa,
05:52
thinking about the kind of connections
that could happen
99
340854
3506
pensando sobre o tipo de conexões
que poderiam acontecer
05:56
between one house and another,
between one neighbor and another.
100
344360
4449
entre uma casa e outra;
entre um vizinho e outro.
Esse lugar se transformou
no que chamamos de "Casa da Escuta",
06:02
This building became what we call
the Listening House,
101
350159
3022
06:05
and it has a collection of discarded books
102
353181
3250
e tem uma coleção de livros descartados
06:08
from the Johnson Publishing Corporation,
103
356431
2671
da Johnson Publishing Corporation,
06:11
and other books from an old bookstore
that was going out of business.
104
359102
3993
e outro livros de uma antiga livraria
que estava fechando.
06:15
I was actually just wanting to activate
these buildings as much as I could
105
363095
4273
Na verdade, eu queria ativar
esses lugares o máximo possível
06:19
with whatever and whoever would join me.
106
367368
3320
com o que tivesse
e com quem quisesse se juntar a mim.
06:23
In Chicago, there's
amazing building stock.
107
371678
2934
Em Chicago há prédios incríveis.
06:26
This building, which had been
the former crack house on the block,
108
374612
4179
Este lugar havia sido
uma casa de drogados no quarteirão,
06:30
and when the building became abandoned,
109
378791
2554
e quando ela ficou abandonada,
06:33
it became a great opportunity to really
imagine what else could happen there.
110
381345
3901
se tornou uma grande oportunidade
para imaginar o que poderia acontecer lá.
06:37
So this space we converted into
what we call Black Cinema House.
111
385246
4052
Este espaço transformamos
no que chamamos de "Casa do Cinema Negro".
06:41
Black Cinema House was an opportunity
in the hood to screen films
112
389298
4121
A Casa do Cinema Negro
foi uma chance de exibir filmes no gueto
06:45
that were important and relevant
to the folk who lived around me,
113
393419
4214
que eram muito importantes e relevantes
para as pessoas que viviam ali;
se quiséssemos mostrar um filme antigo
do Melvin Van Peebles, nós podíamos;
06:49
that if we wanted to show
an old Melvin Van Peebles film, we could.
114
397633
3715
se quiséssemos mostrar
"Car Wash", tudo bem.
06:53
If we wanted to show "Car Wash," we could.
115
401348
2670
06:56
That would be awesome.
116
404018
1973
Isso seria incrível!
06:57
The building we soon outgrew,
117
405991
2555
O lugar logo ficou pequeno,
07:00
and we had to move to a larger space.
118
408546
2507
e tivemos que mudar para um espaço maior.
07:03
Black Cinema House, which was made
from just a small piece of clay,
119
411053
4435
A Casa do Cinema Negro, que foi feita
a partir de um pequeno pedaço de barro,
07:07
had to grow into a much larger
piece of clay, which is now my studio.
120
415488
7291
tinha se tornado algo muito maior,
que é agora o meu estúdio.
07:14
What I realized was that
for those of you who are zoning junkies,
121
422779
3809
Notei que, para quem
é viciado em zoneamento,
07:18
that some of the things that I was doing
122
426588
1994
algumas das coisas que eu estava fazendo
07:20
in these buildings
that had been left behind,
123
428582
3299
nesses lugares que tinham
sido abandonados,
07:23
they were not the uses by which
the buildings were built,
124
431881
3832
não eram a destinação
original dos prédios.
e que há políticas da cidade que dizem:
07:27
and that there are city policies that say,
125
435713
2228
"Ei, uma casa residencial
deve permanecer residencial."
07:29
"Hey, a house that is residential
needs to stay residential."
126
437941
3319
07:33
But what do you do in neighborhoods when
ain't nobody interested in living there?
127
441260
4807
Mas o que fazer em bairros
onde ninguém tem interesse em viver lá?
07:38
That the people who have
the means to leave have already left?
128
446067
3944
Onde as pessoas que têm condições
para sair, já saíram.
07:42
What do we do with
these abandoned buildings?
129
450011
2487
O que fazer com essas
construções abandonadas?
07:44
And so I was trying
to wake them up using culture.
130
452498
3205
Eu estava tentando reerguê-las
por meio da cultura.
07:47
We found that that
was so exciting for folk,
131
455703
3003
Descobrimos que isso era tão
animador para as pessoas
07:50
and people were so responsive to the work,
that we had to then find bigger buildings.
132
458706
4565
e elas eram tão receptivas ao trabalho,
que tivemos que encontrar lugares maiores.
07:55
By the time we found bigger buildings,
133
463271
2045
No momento em que
achamos lugares maiores,
07:57
there was, in part, the resources
necessary to think about those things.
134
465316
4253
havia, em parte os recursos necessários
para pensar sobre aquelas coisas.
08:01
In this bank that we called the Arts Bank,
it was in pretty bad shape.
135
469569
4332
Este banco, que chamamos de "Banco
das Artes", estava em mau estado.
08:05
There was about six feet
of standing water.
136
473901
3286
Havia dois metros de água parada.
08:09
It was a difficult project to finance,
137
477187
2462
Foi um projeto difícil de financiar,
08:11
because banks weren't interested
in the neighborhood
138
479649
2430
já que os bancos não tinham
interesse no bairro;
08:14
because people weren't interested
in the neighborhood
139
482079
2562
porque as pessoas não tinham
interesse no bairro;
08:16
because nothing had happened there.
140
484641
2101
porque nada acontecia lá.
08:18
It was dirt. It was nothing.
It was nowhere.
141
486742
3982
Era sujo, não tinha nada. Era um vazio.
08:22
And so we just started imagining,
what else could happen in this building?
142
490724
5657
Então começamos a imaginar,
o que mais poderia acontecer lá?
08:28
(Applause)
143
496381
5465
(Aplausos)
E agora que a fama
do meu quarteirão se espalhou,
08:33
And so now that the rumor
of my block has spread,
144
501846
2769
e muitas pessoas estão
começando a visitar,
08:36
and lots of people are starting to visit,
145
504615
1980
descobrimos que o banco
pode agora ser um centro
08:38
we've found that the bank
can now be a center
146
506595
2101
08:40
for exhibition, archives,
music performance,
147
508696
3212
para exposições, arquivos,
performances musicais;
08:43
and that there are people
who are now interested
148
511908
2778
e que agora há pessoas interessadas
08:46
in being adjacent to those buildings
because we brought some heat,
149
514686
3538
em ser vizinhas desses lugares
porque trouxemos calor,
08:50
that we kind of made a fire.
150
518224
2453
nós aquecemos o lugar.
08:52
One of the archives that we'll have there
is this Johnson Publishing Corporation.
151
520677
4249
Um dos arquivos que nós temos lá
é o Johnson Publishing Corporation.
08:56
We've also started to collect
memorabilia from American history,
152
524926
3599
Também começamos a juntar
“memorabilia” da historia americana,
09:00
from people who live
or have lived in that neighborhood.
153
528525
3831
de pessoas que vivem ou viveram no bairro.
09:04
Some of these images
are degraded images of black people,
154
532356
3738
Algumas dessas imagens
são imagens degradadas de pessoas negras,
09:08
kind of histories
of very challenging content,
155
536094
3274
histórias de conteúdo
bastante desafiador,
09:11
and where better than a neighborhood
156
539368
2461
e onde melhor do que um bairro,
09:13
with young people who are constantly
asking themselves about their identity
157
541829
4270
com jovens que estão constantemente
se perguntando sobre sua identidade,
09:18
to talk about some of the complexities
158
546099
2255
para falar sobre algumas das complexidades
09:20
of race and class?
159
548354
1842
de raça e classe?
09:22
In some ways, the bank represents a hub,
160
550896
3727
Em alguns aspectos
o Banco representa um centro,
09:26
that we're trying to create a pretty
hardcore node of cultural activity,
161
554623
5352
estamos tentando criar uma intensa
atmosfera de atividade cultural,
09:31
and that if we could start
to make multiple hubs
162
559975
2867
e se pudéssemos começar
a fazer vários centros
09:34
and connect some cool
green stuff around there,
163
562842
2949
e conectá-los com um pouco de verde,
09:37
that the buildings that we've
purchased and rehabbed,
164
565791
2949
os lugares que compramos e reformamos,
09:40
which is now around 60 or 70 units,
165
568740
3274
que agora são por volta
de 60 ou 70 unidades,
09:44
that if we could land
miniature Versailles on top of that,
166
572014
5433
se pudéssemos colocar
pequenas "Versalhes" por lá,
09:49
and connect these buildings
by a beautiful greenbelt --
167
577447
3483
e conectar esses lugares
com um belo cinturão verde...
09:52
(Applause) --
168
580930
2925
(Aplausos)
09:55
that this place where people
never wanted to be
169
583855
3460
Este lugar onde as pessoas
nunca quiseram estar,
09:59
would become an important destination
170
587315
2461
se tornaria um importante destino
10:01
for folk from all over
the country and world.
171
589776
2581
para as pessoas de todo o país e do mundo.
De algum modo, me pareço
muito com um oleiro,
10:05
In some ways, it feels
very much like I'm a potter,
172
593027
3785
10:08
that we tackle the things
that are at our wheel,
173
596812
3413
nós lidamos com as coisas
que estão na nossa roda,
10:12
we try with the skill that we have
174
600225
2263
tentamos, com a habilidade que temos,
10:14
to think about this next bowl
that I want to make.
175
602488
4540
pensar sobre o próximo vaso
que quero fazer.
10:19
And it went from a bowl to a singular
house to a block to a neighborhood
176
607028
4899
E foi de um vaso para uma casa,
para um bloco, para um bairro,
10:23
to a cultural district
to thinking about the city,
177
611927
2694
para um distrito cultural,
para pensar sobre a cidade,
10:26
and at every point, there were things
that I didn't know that I had to learn.
178
614621
4086
e a cada ponto, havia coisas
que eu não sabia que tinha que aprender.
10:30
I've never learned so much
about zoning law in my life.
179
618707
3042
Eu nunca aprendi tanto sobre
lei de zoneamento na minha vida.
Nunca pensei que precisasse aprender.
10:33
I never thought I'd have to.
180
621749
1780
Mas, como resultado disso,
estou achando que não há espaço apenas
10:35
But as a result of that, I'm finding
that there's not just room
181
623529
2957
10:38
for my own artistic practice,
182
626486
1741
para a minha atividade artística,
10:40
there's room for a lot of other
artistic practices.
183
628227
2536
há espaço para muitas
outras atividades artísticas.
Então as pessoas começaram a perguntar:
10:43
So people started asking us,
184
631803
1579
"Bom, Theaster, como você
vai escalar isso?"
10:45
"Well, Theaster, how are you
going to go to scale?"
185
633382
2471
"Qual é o seu plano de sustentabilidade?"
10:47
and, "What's your sustainability plan?"
186
635853
2135
(Risos)
(Aplausos)
10:49
(Laughter) (Applause)
187
637988
4751
E eu descobri
que eu não poderia me exportar,
10:54
And what I found was that
I couldn't export myself,
188
642739
3877
que o que parece necessário
em cidades como Akron em Ohio,
10:58
that what seems necessary
in cities like Akron, Ohio,
189
646616
3739
11:02
and Detroit, Michigan, and Gary, Indiana,
190
650355
2600
Detroit em Michigan e Gary em Indiana,
11:04
is that there are people in those places
who already believe in those places,
191
652955
3698
é que já existem pessoas
nesses lugares que acreditam neles,
11:08
that are already dying
to make those places beautiful,
192
656653
2926
que já estão dando o máximo
para torná-los belos;
11:11
and that often, those people
who are passionate about a place
193
659579
3459
e frequentemente, aquelas pessoas
que são apaixonadas por um lugar
11:15
are disconnected from the resources
necessary to make cool things happen,
194
663038
4412
estão desconectadas dos recursos
para fazer coisas legais acontecerem,
ou desconectadas de uma
contingência de pessoas
11:19
or disconnected from
a contingency of people
195
667450
2577
que poderiam ajudar
a fazer as coisas acontecerem.
11:22
that could help make things happen.
196
670027
1881
Então agora, começamos
a aconselhar, pelo país,
11:23
So now, we're starting to give advice
around the country
197
671908
4292
11:28
on how to start with what you got,
198
676200
2145
como começar com o que você tem;
11:30
how to start with the things
that are in front of you,
199
678345
2795
como começar com as coisas
que estão à sua frente;
11:33
how to make something out of nothing,
200
681140
2377
como criar algo do nada;
11:35
how to reshape your world
at a wheel or at your block
201
683517
4528
como remodelar o seu mundo
numa roda, ou no seu quarteirão
11:40
or at the scale of the city.
202
688045
2485
ou na escala da cidade.
11:42
Thank you so much.
203
690530
1695
Muito obrigado.
11:44
(Applause)
204
692225
5906
(Aplausos)
11:51
June Cohen: Thank you. So I think
many people watching this
205
699695
3506
June Cohen: Obrigada. Acho que muitas
pessoas que estão nos assistindo,
11:55
will be asking themselves
the question you just raised at the end:
206
703201
3205
estão se perguntando sobre a questão
que você levantou no final:
"Como elas podem fazer isso
em sua própria cidade?"
11:58
How can they do this in their own city?
207
706406
2182
12:00
You can't export yourself.
208
708588
1621
Você não pode se exportar.
12:02
Give us a few pages out of your playbook
about what someone who is inspired
209
710209
3673
Fale um pouco da sua estratégia
sobre o que alguém que se inspira
12:05
about their city can do
to take on projects like yours?
210
713882
2890
na própria cidade pode fazer
para adotar projetos como o seu?
12:08
Theaster Gates: One of the things
I've found that's really important
211
716772
3193
Theaster Gates: Uma das coisas
que acho importante
12:11
is giving thought to not just
the kind of individual project,
212
719965
4087
é pensar não apenas no projeto individual,
12:16
like an old house,
213
724052
2794
como uma casa velha,
12:18
but what's the relationship
between an old house,
214
726846
2871
mas qual é a relação entre a casa velha,
12:21
a local school, a small bodega,
215
729717
3158
uma escola, uma pequena mercearia;
12:24
and is there some kind of synergy
between those things?
216
732875
2996
há algum tipo de sinergia
entre essas coisas?
12:27
Can you get those folk talking?
217
735871
2298
Você consegue fazer
essas pessoas conversarem?
12:30
I've found that in cases
where neighborhoods have failed,
218
738169
4551
Eu descobri que mesmo em casos
onde os bairros fracassaram,
12:34
they still often have a pulse.
219
742720
2183
eles ainda pulsavam.
12:36
How do you identify the pulse
in that place, the passionate people,
220
744903
3459
Como você identifica o pulso
desse lugar, as pessoas apaixonadas
12:40
and then how do you get folk
who have been fighting,
221
748362
3005
e então, como você faz o povo
que esteve lutando,
12:43
slogging for 20 years, reenergized
about the place that they live?
222
751367
4391
trabalhando duro por 20 anos,
vibrar com o lugar que eles vivem?
12:47
And so someone has to do that work.
223
755758
2461
Alguém tem que fazer este trabalho.
12:50
If I were a traditional developer,
I would be talking about buildings alone,
224
758219
4273
Se eu fosse um empreendedor tradicional,
estaria falando somente sobre construções
12:54
and then putting
a "For Lease" sign in the window.
225
762492
3947
e então, colocando placas
de "Aluga-se" na janela.
Eu acho que você tem
que fazer mais do que isso;
12:58
I think that you actually
have to curate more than that,
226
766439
2647
13:01
that there's a way in which
you have to be mindful about,
227
769086
2698
que há coisas das quais
você deve estar atento,
13:03
what are the businesses
that I want to grow here?
228
771784
3056
quais os tipos de negócio
que eu quero que cresçam aqui?
E então, há pessoas nesse lugar
13:06
And then, are there people
who live in this place
229
774840
2442
querem desenvolver esses negócios comigo?
13:09
who want to grow those businesses with me?
230
777282
2020
Porque eu acho que não se trata
apenas de um espaço cultural ou habitação;
13:11
Because I think it's not just
a cultural space or housing;
231
779302
2833
13:14
there has to be the recreation
of an economic core.
232
782135
3042
tem que haver a recriação
de um núcleo econômico.
13:17
So thinking about those things
together feels right.
233
785177
3668
Então, pensar sobre essas coisas
juntas parece o certo.
JC: É difícil fazer com que as pessoas
se animem novamente
13:20
JC: It's hard to get people
to create the spark again
234
788845
2806
depois de trabalhar duro por 20 anos.
13:23
when people have been
slogging for 20 years.
235
791651
2047
Existem métodos que você descobriu
que tenha ajudado a romper com isso?
13:25
Are there any methods you've found
that have helped break through?
236
793698
3117
TG: Sim, eu creio que agora
há vários exemplos
13:28
TG: Yeah, I think that now
there are lots of examples
237
796815
2967
de pessoas que estão
fazendo um trabalho incrível,
13:31
of folk who are doing amazing work,
238
799782
1834
13:33
but those methods are sometimes like,
when the media is constantly saying
239
801616
4435
mas esses métodos são às vezes como...
Quando a mídia constantemente diz
13:38
that only violent things
happen in a place,
240
806051
2972
que apenas coisas violentas
acontecem num lugar,
então, com base nas suas habilidades
e no contexto particular,
13:41
then based on your skill set
and the particular context,
241
809023
3297
13:44
what are the things that you can do
in your neighborhood
242
812320
3320
quais são as coisas que você
pode fazer no seu bairro
13:47
to kind of fight some of that?
243
815640
2125
para lutar contra essas coisas?
13:49
So I've found that
if you're a theater person,
244
817765
2903
Eu descobri que se você
for uma pessoa do teatro,
13:52
you have outdoor street theater festivals.
245
820668
2275
pode fazer festivais de teatro
ao ar livre.
13:54
In some cases, we don't have
the resources in certain neighborhoods
246
822943
3924
Em alguns casos, não temos os recursos,
em determinados bairros,
13:58
to do things that are
a certain kind of splashy,
247
826867
3344
para fazer coisas deslumbrantes,
14:02
but if we can then find ways
of making sure that people
248
830211
3111
mas se pudermos encontrar formas
de assegurar que as pessoas
14:05
who are local to a place,
249
833322
1532
de um lugar se juntem àquelas
14:06
plus people who could be supportive
of the things that are happening locally,
250
834854
3832
que podem apoiar
as coisas que acontecem localmente,
e quando essas pessoas se juntam,
14:10
when those people get together,
251
838686
1764
acho que coisas incríveis podem acontecer.
14:12
I think really amazing things can happen.
252
840450
2136
JC: Interessante.
14:14
JC: So interesting.
253
842586
1486
Como se certificar que os projetos
que você está criando
14:16
And how can you make sure
that the projects you're creating
254
844072
2322
sejam realmente para os desfavorecidos,
14:18
are actually for the disadvantaged
255
846394
1765
14:20
and not just for the sort of
vegetarian indie movie crowd
256
848159
4040
e não apenas para um grupo
de vegetarianos de um filme hippie
que podem se mudar para lá
para tirar vantagem.
14:24
that might move in
to take advantage of them.
257
852199
2119
14:26
TG: Right on. So I think this is where
it starts to get into the thick weeds.
258
854318
5041
TG: Isso mesmo. Creio que aqui
é onde as coisas começam a ficar sérias.
14:31
JC: Let's go there.
TG: Right now, Grand Crossing
259
859359
2637
JC: Vamos lá!
TG: Neste momento, o Grand Crossing
14:33
is 99 percent black, or at least living,
260
861996
2997
é 99% negro, ou pelo menos
os que vivem ali,
14:36
and we know that maybe
who owns property in a place
261
864993
3320
e nós sabemos que talvez
quem seja dono do imóvel
14:40
is different from who walks
the streets every day.
262
868313
2461
não seja quem anda
pelas ruas todos os dias.
14:42
So it's reasonable to say
that Grand Crossing is already
263
870774
2856
Então é razoável dizer
que o Grand Crossing já está
14:45
in the process of being something
different than it is today.
264
873630
3855
no processo de ser algo
diferente do que é hoje.
14:49
But are there ways to think about
housing trusts or land trusts
265
877485
5595
Mas existem maneiras de pensar sobre
cooperativas de habitação
ou num empreendimento social
14:55
or a mission-based development
266
883080
2438
que comece a proteger
alguma parte do espaço,
14:57
that starts to protect
some of the space that happens,
267
885518
2763
15:00
because when you have
7,500 empty lots in a city,
268
888281
4319
porque quando você tem
7.500 lotes vazios numa cidade,
15:04
you want something to happen there,
269
892600
1951
você quer que alguma coisa aconteça ali,
15:06
but you need entities that are not
just interested in the development piece,
270
894551
4504
mas é necessário que haja
entidades não apenas interessadas
no empreendimento, mas na estabilização,
15:11
but entities that are interested
in the stabilization piece,

16:11
that sometimes culture is the thing
that helps to ignite,
289
959694

às vezes a cultura é algo
que ajuda a incentivar,
16:16
and that I can't do everything,
290

e eu não posso fazer tudo sozinho;
16:19
but I think that there's a way in which
if you can start with culture
291
967037

mas eu acho que há uma maneira
em que se pode começar com a cultura
16:22
and get people kind of
reinvested in their place,
292
970444

e levar as pessoas
a reinvestirem no seu lugar;

other kinds of adjacent
amenities start to grow,
293
973416

outras instalações adjacentes
começam a surgir,
16:29
and then people can make a demand
that's a poetic demand,
294

e, então, as pessoas podem fazer
uma exigência poética,

and the political demands that
are necessary to wake up our cities,

e as exigências políticas que são
necessárias para despertar nossas cidades

they also become very poetic.
