ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Tyler DeWitt - Science enthusiast
Tyler DeWitt recognizes that textbooks are not the way to get young people interested in science. Instead, he teaches science by making it fun and fantastical.

Why you should listen

Tyler DeWitt has taught Biology, Chemistry and English at high schools in both the United States and South Korea, and believes that science could be every student’s favorite class if it weren’t for the long words and overly technical presentation. Instead, DeWitt focuses on creating engaging lessons that evoke a sense of wonder in kids and that encourage them to think critically.

Currently a Ph.D. student in Microbiology at MIT, DeWitt studies how bacteria transfer pieces of DNA to their neighbors. He is also a coordinator for the MIT+K12 video outreach project, which encourages MIT students to create educational videos for students of all ages in all subjects. DeWitt also has a full YouTube library of videos that teach everything from valence electrons to the chemistry of acids, all with an eye toward fun.

Tyler DeWitt: Hey science teachers -- make it fun

Tyler DeWitt: Hei, profesori de științe, faceți lecțiile distractive!

Filmed:

Here'sAici este what had to happenîntâmpla.

Iată ce a trebuit să se întâmple.
03:33
A virusvirus grabbedapucat ontope a bacteriumbacterie

And now that we'vene-am gottenajuns ridscăpa of the bacteriabacterii DNAADN-UL,

Acum că am scăpat de ADN-ul bacteriei,

and it tellsspune it to startstart makingluare more virusesviruși.
66

07:44
explosionsexplozii!
125
448652
3442
creăm explozii!
07:47
But if a textbookmanual seemspare too much fundistracţie,
126
452094
4150
Dar dacă un text e prea amuzant
07:52
it's somehowoarecum unscientificneştiinţifice.
127
456244
3752
pare oarecum neștiințific.
07:55
Now anothero alta problemproblemă was that
128
459996
3856
O altă problemă era limbajul
07:59
the languagelimba in theiral lor textbookmanual was trulycu adevărat incomprehensibleneînţeles.
129
463852
5640
folosit în manuale - era de neînțeles.
08:05
If we want to summarizerezuma that storypoveste that I told you earliermai devreme,
130
469492
2689
Dacă rezumăm povestea de mai devreme,
08:08
we could startstart by sayingzicală something like,
131
472181
1319
putem spune ceva de genul:
08:09
"These virusesviruși make copiescopii of themselvesînșiși
132
473500
2378
„Aceste virusuri se înmulțesc
08:11
by slippingalunecarea theiral lor DNAADN-UL into a bacteriumbacterie."
133
475878
2742
injectându-și ADN-ul în bacterii.”
08:14
The way this showeda arătat up in the textbookmanual, it lookedprivit like this:
134
478620
3441
Exprimarea dintr-un manual e următoarea:
08:17
"BacteriophageBacteriofag replicationreplică is initiatediniţiat
135
482061
3295
„Înmulțirea bacteriofagă începe
08:21

136
485356
3067
prin introducerea acidului nucleic viral
08:24
into a bacteriumbacterie."
137
488423
2542
într-o bacterie.”
08:26
That's great, perfectperfect for 13-year-oldstineri de An Nou.
138
490965
4695
Minunat! Perfect pentru elevii de 13 ani!
08:31
But here'saici e the thing. There are plentymulțime of people
139
495660
2640
Dar există numeroase persoane
08:34
in scienceştiinţă educationeducaţie who would look at this and say there's no way
140
498300
3207
din domeniul educației științifice care susțin
08:37
that we could ever give that to studentselevi,
141
501507
2945
08:40
because it containsconține some languagelimba that isn't completelycomplet accurateprecis.
142
504452
4920
fiindcă nu e extrem de precis.
08:45
For exampleexemplu, I told you that virusesviruși have DNAADN-UL.
143
509372
2456
V-am spus că virusurile au ADN.
08:47
Well, a very tinyminuscul fractionfracțiune of them don't.
144
511828
3129
O parte infimă din ele nu au.
08:50
They have something calleddenumit RNAARN insteadin schimb.
145
514957
2415
în schimb, au ceva numit ARN.
08:53
So a professionalprofesional scienceştiinţă writerscriitor would circlecerc that
146
517372
2352
08:55

147
519724
1146
și ar spune că trebuie să dispară.
08:56
We have to changeSchimbare it to something much more technicaltehnic."
148
520870
2150
08:58
And after a teamechipă of professionalprofesional scienceştiinţă editorseditori
