ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Alan Eustace - Stratospheric explorer
Alan Eustace leapt to Earth from the edge of the stratosphere wearing only a spacesuit, shattering skydiving records and potentially revolutionizing the commercial space industry.

Why you should listen

Two years after Felix Baumgartner jumped from a capsule in the stratosphere for Red Bull, a quiet group led by now-retired Google exec Alan Eustace beat the height record -- without a capsule. (Neither livestreamed nor promoted, the jump record was announced the next day.) In a custom 500-pound spacesuit, Eustace was strapped to a weather balloon, and rose to a height of over 135,000 feet, where he dove to Earth at speeds exceeding 821 mph -- breaking both the sound barrier and previous records for high-altitude jumps.

Leading up to this jump, Eustace and his partners in StratEx had spent years solving a key problem of stratosphere exploration: returning human beings to Earth from the edge of space using minimal life-support systems. In the process, they’ve opened the door to cheaper and safer near-space travel.

03:32
So in scuba水肺 diving潜水,
61
200120
1696
03:33
you have a self-contained自足 system系统.
62
201840

03:35
You have everything
that you could ever need.
63
203680
2336
03:38
You have a scuba水肺 tank坦克.
64
206040
2040
03:40
You have a wetsuit
65
208480
2656
03:43
You have visibility
66
211160
1736
03:44
And that scuba水肺 is exactly究竟 this system系统,
67
212920
2736
03:47
and we're going to launch发射 it
into the stratosphere平流层.
68
215680
2440
03:50
Three years年份 later后来, this is what we have.
69
218920
2160
03:54
We've我们已经 got an amazing惊人 suit适合
that was made制作 by ILCILC Dover多佛.
70
222160
4696
ILC Dover
03:58
ILCILC Dover多佛 was the company公司

72
230360
2416
04:04
They had never sold出售 a suit适合 commercially商业,
73
232800
3256
04:08
only to the government政府,
74
236080
1576
04:09
but they sold出售 one to me,
which哪一个 I am very grateful感激 for.
75
237680
3616
04:13
Up here we have a parachute
This was all about safety安全.
76
241320
3160
04:17
Everyone大家 on the team球队 knew知道
77
245240
4816
04:22
that I have a wife妻子
and two small children孩子 --
78
250080

04:27
and I wanted to come back safely安然.
80
255440
2055
04:29
So there's a main主要 parachute降落伞
and a reserve保留 parachute降落伞,
81
257519
2430
04:31
and if I do nothing,
82
259973
1200
04:33
the reserve保留 parachute降落伞 is going to open打开
because of an automatic自动 opening开盘 device设备.
83
261760
3667
04:38
The suit适合 itself本身
can protect保护 me from the cold.
84
266160
2136
04:40
This area in the front面前 here
has thermal protection保护.
85
268320
2936
04:43
It will actually其实 heat water
that will wrap around my body身体.
86
271280
3176
04:46
It has two redundant oxygen tanks
87
274480
2456
04:48
Even if I was to get
a quarter-inch四分之一英寸 hole in this suit适合,
88
276960
3056
04:52
which哪一个 is extremely非常 unlikely不会,
89
280040
2576
04:54
this system系统 would still protect保护 me
from the low pressure压力 of space空间.
90
282640
3800
04:59
The main主要 advantage优点 of this system系统
is weight重量 and complexity复杂.
91
287320
3656
05:03
So the system系统 weighs about 500 pounds英镑,
92
291000
2976
05:06
and if you compare比较 it to the other attempt尝试
recently最近 to go up in the stratosphere平流层,
93
294000
3816
05:09
they used a capsule胶囊.
94
297840
1256
05:11
And to do a capsule胶囊, there's an amazing惊人
amount of complexity复杂 that goes into it,
95
299120
3976
05:15
and it weighed称重 about 3,000 pounds英镑,
96
303120
1936
05:17
and to raise提高 3,000 pounds英镑
to an altitude高度 of 135,000 feet,
97
305080
4696
05:21
which哪一个 was my target目标 altitude高度,
98
309800
2136
05:23
it would have taken采取 a balloon气球
that was 45 to 50 million百万 cubic立方体 feet.
99
311960
5160
05:30
Because I only weighed称重
500 pounds英镑 in this system系统,
100
318840
3336
05:34
we could do it with a balloon气球
that was five times smaller than that,
101
322200
3216
05:37
and that allowed允许 us to use a launch发射 system系统
that was dramatically显着 simpler简单
102
325440
4416
05:41
than what needs需求 to be doneDONE
for a much larger balloon气球.
103
329880
2640
05:45
So with that, I want to take you
to Roswell罗斯威尔, New Mexico墨西哥, on October十月 24.
104
333480
4656
05:50
We had an amazing惊人 team球队
that got up in the middle中间 of the night.
105
338160
3696
05:53
And here's这里的 the suit适合.
106
341880
2576
05:56
Again, this is using运用 the front面前 loader装载机
that you'll你会 see in a second第二,
107
344480
3136
05:59
and I want to play you a video视频
of the actual实际 launch发射.
108
347640
3216
06:02
Roswell's罗斯维尔 a great place地点
to launch发射 balloons气球,
109
350880
2016
06:04
but it's a fantastic奇妙 place地点
to land土地 under a parachute降落伞,
110
352920
3176
06:08
especially特别 when you're going to land土地
70 miles英里 away from the place地点 you started开始.
111
356120
4400
06:13

06:20
And then here you see the suit适合 going on.
115
368880

06:24
It takes about an hour小时 to get the suit适合 on.

So I want to tell you one thing

658840
1496
11:12
that you might威力 not have seen看到
in that video视频,
185
660360
2296
11:14
but one of the most critical危急 parts部分
of the entire整个 thing was the release发布
186
662680
3856
11:18
and what happens发生 right after you release发布.
187
666560
2856
11:21
And what we tried试着 to do was use
something called a drogue锥套 parachute降落伞,
188
669440
4296
11:25
and a drogue锥套 parachute降落伞
was there to stabilize稳定 me.
189
673760
2696
11:28
And I'll show显示 you one of those right now.
190
676480
2056
11:30
If any of you have ever
11:34
you probably大概 used one of these.
192
682120
1520
11:38
But the problem问题 with one of these things
193
686200
1936
11:40
is right when you release发布,
you're in zero gravity重力.
194
688160
2936
11:43
So it's very easy简单 for this
to just turn right around you.
195
691120
3616
11:46
And before you know it,
you can be tangled up or spinning纺织,
196
694760
3280
11:51
or you can release发布 this drogue锥套 late晚了,
197
699320
2656
11:54
in which哪一个 case案件 what happens发生
is you're going down at 800 miles英里 an hour小时,
198
702000
4056
11:58
and this thing is going to destroy破坏 itself本身
199
706080
2496
12:00
and not be very useful有用.
200
708600
1200
12:03
But the guys at United联合的 Parachute降落伞
Technologies技术 came来了 up with this idea理念,
201
711400
4296
12:07
and it was a roll that looks容貌 like that,
202
715720
1936
12:09
but watch what happens发生 when I pull it out.
203
717680
2680
12:13
It's forming成型 a pipe.
204
721560
1600
12:16
This pipe is so solid固体
205
724680
2200
12:20
that you can take this drogue锥套 parachute降落伞
and wrap it around,
206
728360
3776
12:24
and there's no way
it will ever tangle纠纷 with you.
207
732160
2320
12:27
And that prevented防止
a very serious严重 potential潜在 problem问题.
208
735680
3240
12:31
So nothing is possible可能
without an amazing惊人 team球队 of people.
209
739560
2936
12:34
The core核心 of this was about 20 people

12:37

My daughter女儿 KatelynKatelyn, my 15-year-old-岁,
