One of my favorite喜爱 cartoon动画片 characters人物 is Snoopy史努比.
0
1000
5000
00:18
I love the way he sits坐镇 and lies on his kennel狗窝 and contemplates预期了 the great things of life.
1
6000
7000
00:25
So when I thought about compassion同情,
2
13000
2000
00:27
my mind心神 immediately立即 went to one of the cartoon动画片 strips带子,
3
15000
4000
00:31
where he's lying说谎 there and he says,
4
19000
4000
00:35
"I really understand理解, and I really appreciate欣赏
5
23000
3000
“我十分了解并且十分欣赏
00:38
how one should love one's那些 neighbor邻居 as one love's爱的 oneself自己.
6
26000
5000
00:43
The only trouble麻烦 is the people next下一个 door; I can't stand them."
7
31000
5000
00:48
This, in a way, is one of the challenges挑战
8
36000
5000
00:53
of how to interpret a really good idea理念.
9
41000
4000
00:57
We all, I think, believe in compassion同情.
10
45000
3000
01:00
If you look at all the world世界 religions宗教, all the main主要 world世界 religions宗教,
11
48000
4000
01:04
you'll你会 find within them some teaching教学 concerning关于 compassion同情.
12
52000
5000
01:09
So in Judaism犹太教, we have, from our Torah托拉,
13
57000
3000
01:12
that you should love your neighbor邻居 as you love yourself你自己.
14
60000
4000
01:16
And within Jewish犹太 teachings教导, the rabbinic拉比 teachings教导, we have Hillel希勒尔,
15
64000
5000
01:21
who taught that you shouldn't不能 do to others其他 what you don't like being存在 doneDONE to yourself你自己.
16
69000
5000
01:26
And all the main主要 religions宗教 have similar类似 teachings教导.
17
74000
5000
01:31
And again, within Judaism
18
79000
2000
01:33
we have a teaching教学 about God,
19
81000
3000
01:36
who is called the compassionate富于同情心的 one, Ha-rachaman哈rachaman.
20
84000
3000
01:39
After all, how could the world世界 exist存在 without God being存在 compassionate富于同情心的?
21
87000
5000
01:44
And we, as taught within the Torah托拉 that we are made制作 in the image图片 of God,
22
92000
5000
01:49
so we too have to be compassionate富于同情心的.
23
97000
4000
01:53
But what does it mean? How does it impact碰撞 on our everyday每天 life?
24
101000
4000
01:57
Sometimes有时, of course课程, being存在 compassionate富于同情心的
25
105000
4000
02:01
can produce生产 feelings情怀 within us that are very difficult to control控制.
26
109000
7000
02:08
I know there are many许多 times when I've gone走了 and conducted进行 a funeral葬礼,
27
116000
6000
02:14
or when I have been sitting坐在 with the bereaved失去亲人, or with people who are dying垂死,
28
122000
6000
02:20
and I am overwhelmed不堪重负 by the sadness, by the difficulty困难,
29
128000
9000
02:29
the challenge挑战 that is there for the family家庭, for the person.
30
137000
4000
02:33
And I'm touched感动, so that tears眼泪 come to my eyes眼睛.
31
141000
5000
02:38
And yet然而, if I just allowed允许 myself to be overwhelmed不堪重负 by these feelings情怀,
32
146000
5000
02:43
I wouldn't不会 be doing my job工作 --
33
151000
3000
02:46
because I have to actually其实 be there for them
34
154000
2000
02:48
and make sure that rituals仪式 happen发生, that practicalities实用性 are seen看到 to.
35
156000
8000
02:56
And yet然而, on the other hand, if I didn't feel this compassion同情,
36
164000
5000
03:01
then I feel that it would be time for me to hang up my robe长袍
37
169000
5000
03:06
and give up being存在 a rabbi拉比.
38
174000
3000
03:09
And these same相同 feelings情怀 are there for all of us as we face面对 the world世界.
39
177000
5000
03:14
Who cannot不能 be touched感动 by compassion同情
40
182000
4000
03:18
when we see the terrible可怕 horrors恐怖 of the results结果 of war战争,
41
186000
7000
03:25
or famine饥荒, or earthquakes地震, or tsunamis海啸?
42
193000
5000
03:30
I know some people who say
43
198000
2000
03:32
"Well, you know there's just so much out there -- I can't do anything,
44
200000
4000
“这样的悲剧日日上演,我对此无能为力,
03:36
I'm not going to even begin开始 to try."
45
204000
4000
03:40
And there are some charity慈善机构 workers工人 who call this compassion同情 fatigue疲劳.
46
208000
6000
03:46
There are others其他 who feel they can't confront面对 compassion同情 anymore,
47
214000
7000
03:53
and so they turn off the television电视 and don't watch.
48
221000
5000
03:58
In Judaism犹太教, though虽然, we tend趋向 to always say, there has to be a middle中间 way.
49
226000
7000
04:05
You have to, of course课程, be aware知道的 of the needs需求 of others其他,
50
233000
7000
04:12
but you have to be aware知道的 in such这样 a way that you can carry携带 on with your life
51
240000
5000
04:17
and be of help to people.
52
245000
3000
04:20
So part部分 of compassion同情 has to be an understanding理解 of what makes品牌 people tick.
53
248000
9000
04:29
And, of course课程, you can't do that unless除非 you understand理解 yourself你自己 a bit more.
54
257000
3000
04:32
And there's a lovely可爱 rabbinic拉比 interpretation解释 of the beginnings开始 of creation创建,
55
260000
7000
04:39
which哪一个 says that when God created创建 the world世界,
56
267000
4000
04:43
God thought that it would be best最好 to create创建 the world世界
57
271000
6000
04:49
only with the divine神圣 attribute属性 of justice正义.
58
277000
4000
04:53
Because, after all, God is just.
59
281000
2000
04:55
Therefore因此, there should be justice正义 throughout始终 the world世界.
60
283000
5000
05:00
And then God looked看着 to the future未来 and realized实现,
61
288000
2000
05:02
if the world世界 was created创建 just with justice正义, the world世界 couldn't不能 exist存在.
62
290000
5000
05:07
So, God thought, "Nope, I'm going to create创建 the world世界 just with compassion同情."
63
295000
6000
05:13
And then God looked看着 to the future未来 and realized实现 that,
64
301000
4000
05:17
in fact事实, if the world世界 were just filled填充 with compassion同情,
65
305000
4000
05:21
there would be anarchy无政府状态 and chaos混沌.
66
309000
4000
05:25
There had to be limits范围 to all things.
67
313000
3000
05:28
The rabbis拉比 describe描述 this as being存在 like a king国王
68
316000
5000
05:33
who has a beautiful美丽, fragile脆弱 glass玻璃 bowl.
69
321000
6000
05:39
If you put too much cold water in, it will shatter
70
327000
4000
05:43
If you put boiling沸腾 water in, it will shatter打碎.
71
331000
2000
05:45
What do you have to do? Put in a mixture混合物 of the two.
72
333000
5000
05:50
And so God put both of these possibilities可能性 into the world世界.
73
338000
8000
05:58
There is something more though虽然 that has to be there.
74
346000
4000
06:02
And that is the translation翻译 of the feelings情怀
75
350000
5000
06:07
that we may可能 have about compassion同情
76
355000
3000
06:10
into the wider更宽的 world世界, into action行动.
77
358000
4000
06:14
So, like Snoopy史努比, we can't just lie谎言 there
78
362000
3000
06:17
and think great thoughts思念 about our neighbors邻居.
79
365000
3000
06:20
We actually其实 have to do something about it.
80
368000
3000
06:23
And so there is also, within Judaism犹太教, this notion概念 of love and kindness善良
81
371000
5000
06:28
that becomes very important重要: "chesedchesed."
82
376000
5000
06:33
All these three things, then, have to be melded融合在一起 together一起.
83
381000
5000
06:38
The idea理念 of justice正义, which哪一个 gives boundaries边界 to our lives生活
84
386000
6000
06:44
and gives us a feeling感觉 of what's right about life, what's right about living活的,
85
392000
7000
06:51
what should we be doing, social社会 justice正义.
86
399000
4000
06:55
There has to be a willingness愿意 to do good deeds行为,
87
403000
5000
07:00
but not, of course课程, at the expense费用 of our own拥有 sanity明智.
88
408000
4000
07:04
You know, there's no way that you can do anything for anyone任何人
89
412000
3000
07:07
if you overdo过度 things.
90
415000
2000
07:09
And balancing平衡 them all in the middle中间 is this notion概念 of compassion同情,
91
417000
6000
07:15
which哪一个 has to be there, if you like, at our very roots.
92
423000
6000
07:21
This idea理念 of compassion同情 comes to us
93
429000
5000
07:26
because we're made制作 in the image图片 of God,
94
434000
3000
07:29
who is ultimately最终 the compassionate富于同情心的 one.
95
437000
4000
07:33
What does this compassion同情 entail意味着?
96
441000
2000
07:35
It entails限嗣继承 understanding理解 the pain疼痛 of the other.
97
443000
5000
07:40
But even more than that,
98
448000
2000
07:42
it means手段 understanding理解 one's那些 connection连接 to the whole整个 of creation创建:
99
450000
8000
07:50
understanding理解 that one is part部分 of that creation创建,
100
458000
4000
07:54
that there is a unity统一 that underliesunderlies all that we see,
101
462000
4000
07:58
all that we hear, all that we feel.
102
466000
4000
08:02
I call that unity统一 God.
103
470000
3000
08:05
And that unity统一 is something that connects所连接 all of creation创建.
104
473000
5000
08:10
And, of course课程, in the modern现代 world世界, with the environmental环境的 movement运动,
105
478000
3000
08:13
we're becoming变得 even more aware知道的 of the connectivity连接 of things,
106
481000
5000
08:18
that something I do here actually其实 does matter in Africa非洲,
107
486000
5000
08:23
that if I use too much of my carbon allowance津贴,
108
491000
4000
08:27
it seems似乎 to be that we are causing造成
109
495000
2000
08:29
a great lack缺乏 of rain in central中央 and eastern Africa非洲.
110
497000
7000
08:36
So there is a connectivity连接,
111
504000
2000
08:38
and I have to understand理解 that -- as part部分 of the creation创建,
112
506000
6000
08:44
as part部分 of me being存在 made制作 in the image图片 of God.
113
512000
5000
08:49
And I have to understand理解 that my needs需求
114
517000
4000
08:53
sometimes有时 have to be sublimated升华 to other needs需求.
115
521000
4000
08:57
This "18 minutes分钟" business商业, I find quite相当 fascinating迷人.
116
525000
5000
09:02
Because in Judaism犹太教, the number 18, in Hebrew希伯来语 letters,
117
530000
5000
09:07
stands站立 for life -- the word "life."
118
535000
3000
09:10
So, in a sense, the 18 minutes分钟 is challenging具有挑战性的 me to say,
119
538000
5000
09:15
"In life, this is what's important重要 in terms条款 of compassion同情."
120
543000
4000
09:19
But, something else其他 as well:
121
547000
2000
09:21
actually其实, 18 minutes分钟 is important重要.
122
549000
3000
09:24
Because at Passover逾越节, when we have to eat unleavened无酵 bread面包,
123
552000
6000
09:30
the rabbis拉比 say, what is the difference区别 between之间 dough面团 that is made制作 into bread面包,
124
558000
4000
09:34
and dough面团 that is made制作 into unleavened无酵 bread面包, or "matzahmatzah的"?
125
562000
3000
09:37
And they say "It's 18 minutes分钟."
126
565000
3000
09:40
Because that's how long they say it takes for this dough面团 to become成为 leaven.
127
568000
5000
09:45
What does it mean, "dough面团 becomes leaven"?
128
573000
3000
09:48
It means手段 it gets得到 filled填充 with hot air空气.
129
576000
3000
09:51
What's matzahmatzah的? What's unleavened无酵 bread面包? You don't get it.
130
579000
4000
09:55
Symbolically象征, what the rabbis拉比 say is that at Passover逾越节,
131
583000
5000
10:00
what we have to do is try to get rid摆脱 of our hot air空气 -- our pride自豪,
132
588000
6000
10:06
our feeling感觉 that we are the most important重要 people in the whole整个 entire整个 world世界,
133
