ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Wendy Freedman - Astronomer
Wendy Freedman led the construction of the Giant Magellan Telescope, a massive earthbound observatory.

Why you should listen
Wendy Freedman and her colleagues raced to build the world’s first next-generation telescope. The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), in northern Chile, is one of three mega-telescopes currently under construction in the Atacama desert region (The others are the ALMA and the European Extremely Large Telescope, E-ELT).

The GMT will have 10 times more resolution than the Hubble Space Telescope. When it is finished, Freedman could be among those who answer one of astronomy’s greatest riddles: are there any other Earth-like planets out there? No stranger to big questions, Freedman and her colleagues at the Carnegie Observatories are also refining the measurement of the Hubble Constant, which could change our understanding of the speed of our expanding universe.

01:03
It's a wonderful精彩 combination組合

01:11
And our ancestors祖先, for as long
as there's been recorded記錄 history歷史,
17
59508
3592
01:15
have looked看著 at the night sky天空
and pondered沉吟 the nature性質 of our existence存在.
18
63124

01:20
And we're no exception例外, our generation.
19
68506

01:23
The only difficulty困難 is
that the night sky天空 now is blocked受阻
20

01:26
by the glare強光 of city lights燈火.
21
74656

01:29
And so astronomers天文學家 go
to these very remote遠程 mountaintops山頂
22
77058

02:47
It's called the Giant巨人

46
155489
3656
02:51
This telescope望遠鏡 is going to have mirrors鏡子
that are 8.4 meters in diameter直徑 --
47

03:03
Each of the seven mirrors

03:06
will be almost幾乎 27 feet in diameter直徑.
52
174898
3784
03:10
Together一起, the seven mirrors鏡子

03:16
So, essentially實質上 the size尺寸
of this entire整個 auditorium禮堂.
55

03:20
The whole整個 telescope望遠鏡 will stand
about 43 meters high,
56
188448

它們的大小差不多;
03:32
in fact事實, it's smaller

60
200328
3237
03:36
It's comparable可比 to the size尺寸

61
204192
3088

03:48
It will have open打開 windows視窗 to the sky天空,

04:27

04:29
It's a telescope望遠鏡 that's

04:37
the first black黑色 holes in the universe宇宙,
the first galaxies星系.
79
265350
3341
04:41
Now, for thousands數千 of years年份,
we have been studying研究 the cosmos宇宙,
80
269690
4608
04:46
we've我們已經 been wondering想知道
about our place地點 in the universe宇宙.
81
274322
2654
04:49
The ancient Greeks希臘人 told us
82
277000
1665
04:50
that the Earth地球 was the center中央
of the universe宇宙.
83
278689
2482
04:53
Five hundred years年份 ago,
04:56
and put the Sun太陽
at the heart of the cosmos宇宙.
85
284845
2791
05:00
And as we've我們已經 learned學到了 over the centuries百年,
86
288785
2054
05:05
first turned轉身, in that time, a two-inch兩英寸,
very small telescope望遠鏡, to the sky天空,
88
293605
5250
05:10
every一切 time we have built內置
larger telescopes望遠鏡,
89
298879
3015
05:13
we have learned學到了 something
about the universe宇宙;
90
301918
2199
我們對宇宙就有更多認識;
05:16
we've我們已經 made製作 discoveries發現, without exception例外.
91
304141
2826
05:20
We've我們已經 learned學到了 in the 20th century世紀
that the universe宇宙 is expanding擴大
92
308908
3737
05:24
and that our own擁有 solar太陽能 system系統
is not at the center中央 of that expansion擴張.
93
312669
4724
05:29
We know now that the universe
is made製作 of about 100 billion十億 galaxies星系
94
317757
5279
05:35
that are visible可見 to us,
95
323060
1650
05:36
and each one of those galaxies星系
has 100 billion十億 stars明星 within it.
96
324734
5411
05:43
So we're looking now
at the deepest最深 image圖片 of the cosmos宇宙
97
331234
2862
05:46
that's ever been taken採取.
98
334120
1499
05:48
It was taken採取 using運用
05:50
and by pointing指點 the telescope望遠鏡 at what
was previously先前 a blank空白 region地區 of sky天空,
100
338857
4890
05:55
before the launch發射 of Hubble哈勃.
101
343771
1599
05:57
And if you can imagine想像 this tiny area,
102
345394
2263
05:59
it's only one-fiftieth五十分之一
of the size尺寸 of the full充分 moon月亮.
103
347681
3330
06:03
So, if you can imagine想像 the full充分 moon月亮.
104
351035
2040
06:05
And there are now 10,000 galaxies星系
visible可見 within that image圖片.
105
353099
4138
06:09
And the faintness模糊 of those images圖片
and the tiny size尺寸 is only a result結果
106
357782
4678
06:14
of the fact事實 that those galaxies星系
are so far away, the vast廣大 distances距離.
107
362484
4407
06:18
And each of those galaxies星系
may可能 contain包含 within it
108
366915
2933
06:21
a few少數 billion十億 or even hundreds數以百計
of billions數十億 of individual個人 stars明星.
109
369872
5009
06:27
Telescopes望遠鏡 are like time machines.
110
375591
2019
06:29
So the farther更遠 back we look in space空間,
the further進一步 back we see in time.
111
377634
4463
06:34
And they're like light buckets
literally按照字面, they collect蒐集 light.
112
382470
3186
06:37
So larger the bucket,
the larger the mirror鏡子 we have,
113
385680
3234
桶子越大,鏡面也越大;
06:40
the more light we can see,
and the farther更遠 back we can view視圖.
114
388938
3410
06:45
So, we've我們已經 learned學到了 in the last century世紀
115
393610
2271
06:47
that there are exotic異國情調 objects對象
in the universe宇宙 -- black黑色 holes.
116
395905
2934
06:50
We've我們已經 even learned學到了
that there's dark黑暗 matter and dark黑暗 energy能源
117
398863
2777
06:53
that we can't see.
118
401664
1211
06:55
So you're looking now
at an actual實際 image圖片 of dark黑暗 matter.
119
403218
3558
06:58
(Laughter
120
406800
1150
06:59
You got it. Not all audiences觀眾 get that.
121
407974
2643
07:02
(Laughter
122
410641
1765
07:04
So the way we infer推斷
the presence存在 of dark黑暗 matter --
123
412430
2724
07:07
we can't see it -- but there's
an unmistakable明白的 tug拖船, due應有 to gravity重力.
124
415178
4695
07:13
We now can look out,
we see this sea of galaxies星系
125
421302
3378
07:16
in a universe宇宙 that's expanding擴大.
126
424704
1777
07:18
What I do myself is to measure測量
the expansion擴張 of the universe宇宙,
127
426862
3303
07:22
and one of the projects項目
that I carried攜帶的 out in the 1990s
128
430189
3141
07:25
used the Hubble哈勃 Space空間 Telescope望遠鏡 to measure測量
how fast快速 the universe宇宙 is expanding擴大.
129
433354
5116
07:31
We can now trace跟踪 back to 14 billion十億 years年份.
130
439356
3966
07:35
We've我們已經 learned學到了 over time
that stars明星 have individual個人 histories歷史;
131
443731
4336
都有自己的一段歷史;
07:40
that is, they have birth分娩,
they have middle中間 ages年齡
132
448091
2929
07:43
and some of them
even have dramatic戲劇性 deaths死亡.
133
451044
2330
07:45
So the embers餘燼 from those stars明星 actually其實
then form形成 the new stars明星 that we see,
134
453829
6115
07:51
most of which哪一個 turn out to have
planets行星 going around them.
135
459968
3811
07:56
And one of the really surprising奇怪 results結果
in the last 20 years年份
136
464272
4035
08:00
has the been the discovery發現
of other planets行星 going around other stars明星.
137
468331
4126
08:04
These are called exoplanets
08:06
And until直到 1995, we didn't even know
the existence存在 of any other planets行星,
139
474411
4996
08:11
other than going around our own擁有 sun太陽.
140
479431
2334
08:14
But now, there are almost
other planets行星 orbiting軌道 other stars明星
141
482360
6421
08:20
that we can now detect檢測,
measure測量 masses群眾 for.
142
488805
2560
08:23
There are 500 of those
that are multiple-planet多個行星 systems系統.
143
491389
3672
08:27
And there are 4,000 --
and still counting數數 -- other candidates候選人
144
495085
3960
08:31
for planets行星 orbiting軌道 other stars明星.
145
499069
2214
08:33
They come in a broolingbrooling variety品種
of different不同 kinds.
146
501790
2973
08:37
There are Jupiter-like木星般的
planets行星 that are hot,
147
505134
3286
08:40
there are other planets行星 that are icy冷冰冰,
there are water worlds世界
148
508444
4258
08:44
and there are rocky岩石 planets行星
like the Earth地球, so-called所謂 "super-Earths超級地球,"
149
512726
3254
08:48
and there have even been planets行星
that have been speculated推測 diamond鑽石 worlds世界.
150
516004
4687
08:53
So we know there's at least最小 one planet行星,
our own擁有 Earth地球, in which哪一個 there is life.
151
521794
4955
08:58
We've我們已經 even found發現 planets行星
that are orbiting軌道 two stars明星.
152
526773
4160
09:02
That's no longer the province
of science科學 fiction小說.
153
530957
3181
09:07
So around our own擁有 planet行星,
we know there's life,
154
535211
2214
09:09
we've我們已經 developed發達 a complex複雜 life,
we now can question our own擁有 origins起源.
155
537449
5716
09:15
And given特定 all that we've我們已經 discovered發現,
the overwhelming壓倒 numbers數字 now suggest建議
156
543728
4220
09:19
that there may可能 be millions百萬, perhaps也許 --
maybe even hundreds數以百計 of millions百萬 --
157
547972
4072
09:24
of other stars明星 that are close enough足夠 --
158
552068
2779
09:26
just the right distance距離 from their stars明星
that they're orbiting軌道 --
159
554871
3290
09:30
to have the existence存在 of liquid液體 water
and maybe could potentially可能 support支持 life.
160
558185
5536
09:36
So we marvel奇蹟 now at those odds可能性,
09:40
and the amazing驚人 thing
is that within the next下一個 decade,
162
568319
2943
09:43
the GMT格林威治標準時間 may可能 be able能夠 to take spectra
of the atmospheres氣氛 of those planets行星,
163
571286
5230
09:48
and determine確定 whether是否 or not
they have the potential潛在 for life.
164
576540
3512
09:53
So, what is the GMT格林威治標準時間 project項目?
165
581702
1780
09:55
It's an international國際 project項目.
166
583506
1874
and I'm happy快樂 to say, being存在 here in Rio里約熱內盧,
167
585404
5849
10:03
that the newest最新 partner夥伴
in our telescope望遠鏡 is Brazil巴西.
168
591277
3035
10:06
(Applause
169
594825
4459
10:11
It also includes包括 a number of institutions機構
10:19
the Smithsonian史密森
and the Carnegie卡內基 Institutions機構,
172
607242
2944
10:22
and the Universities高校 of Arizona亞利桑那, Chicago芝加哥,
Texas-Austin德克薩斯州奧斯汀 and Texas德州 A&M University大學.
173
610210
6467
10:29
It also involves涉及 Chile智利.
174
617074
1887
10:32
So, the making製造 of the mirrors鏡子
in this telescope望遠鏡 is also fascinating迷人
175
620723
3212
10:35
in its own擁有 right.
176
623959
1365
10:37
Take chunks of glass玻璃, melt熔化 them
in a furnace that is itself本身 rotating旋轉.
177
625348
4635
10:42
This happens發生 underneath
10:44
at the University大學 of Arizona亞利桑那.
179
632866
2042
10:46
It's tucked away under 52,000 seats.
180
634932
2936
10:49
Nobody沒有人 know it's happening事件.
181
637892
1401
10:51
And there's essentially實質上
a rotating旋轉 cauldron.
182
639738
3324
10:55
The mirrors鏡子 are cast
and they're cooled冷卻 very slowly慢慢地,
183
643086
3035
10:58
and then they're polished
to an exquisite精美 precision精確.
184
646145
2913
11:01
And so, if you think
about the precision精確 of these mirrors鏡子,
185
649637
3077
11:04
the bumps顛簸 on the mirror鏡子,
over the entire整個 27 feet,
186
652738
4553
11:09
amount to less
than one-millionth百萬分之一 of an inch英寸.
187
657315
3679
11:13
So, can you visualize想像 that?
188
661018
1524
11:15
Ow!
189
663089
1151
噢!
11:16
(Laughter
190
664264
1324
11:17
That's one five-thousandths
of the width寬度 of one of my hairs,
191
665612
6271
11:23
over this entire整個 27 feet.
192
671907
2137
11:26
It's a spectacular壯觀 achievement成就.
193
674068
1870
11:27
It's what allows允許 us to have
the precision精確 that we will have.
194
675962
3315
11:32
So, what does that precision精確 buy購買 us?
195
680876
2417
11:35
So the GMT格林威治標準時間, if you can imagine想像 --
196
683843
2739
11:38
if I were to hold保持 up a coin硬幣,
which哪一個 I just happen發生 to have,
197
686606
4449
11:43
and I look at the face面對 of that coin硬幣,
I can see from here
198
691079
4991
11:48
the writing寫作 on the coin硬幣;
I can see the face面對 on that coin硬幣.
199
696094
3985
11:52
My guess猜測 that even in the front面前 row,
you can't see that.
200
700103
3114
11:55
But if we were to turn
11:58
all 80-feet-feet diameter直徑
that we see in this auditorium禮堂,
202
706531
3373
12:01
and point it 200 miles英里 away,
203
709928
3069
12:05
if I were standing常設 in São Paulo聖保羅,
we could resolve解決 the face面對 of this coin硬幣.
204
713021
5868
12:10
That's the extraordinary非凡 resolution解析度
and power功率 of this telescope望遠鏡.
205
718913
3607
12:15
And if we were --
206
723761
2698
12:18
(Applause
207
726483
3870
12:22
If an astronaut宇航員 went up to the Moon月亮,
a quarter25美分硬幣 of a million百萬 miles英里 away,
208
730377
4601
12:27
and lit發光的 a candle蠟燭 -- a single candle蠟燭 --
209
735002
2916
12:29
then we would be able能夠
to detect檢測 it, using運用 the GMT格林威治標準時間.
210
737942
2810
12:37
This is a simulated模擬 image圖片
of a cluster in a nearby附近 galaxy星系.
212
745334
5681
12:43
"Nearby附近" is astronomical天文,
it's all relative相對的.
213
751039
2585
12:45
It's tens of millions百萬 of light-years光年 away.
214
753648
2503
12:48
This is what this cluster would look like.
215
756175
2014
12:50
So look at those four bright objects對象,
216
758213
2168
12:52
and now lets讓我們 compare比較 it with a camera相機
on the Hubble哈勃 Space空間 Telescope望遠鏡.
217
760405
4007
12:56
You can see faint detail詳情
that starts啟動 to come through通過.
218
764436
3179
12:59
And now finally最後 -- and look how dramatic戲劇性
this is -- this is what the GMT格林威治標準時間 will see.
219
767639
6295
13:05
So, keep your eyes眼睛 on those
bright images圖片 again.
220
773958
2370
13:08
This is what we see on one of the most
powerful強大 existing現有 telescopes望遠鏡 on the Earth地球,
221
776352
4418
13:12
and this, again, what the GMT格林威治標準時間 will see.
222
780794
2881
13:18
So, where are we?
224
786975
1322
13:20
We have now leveled夷為平地 the top最佳
of the mountaintop山頂 in Chile智利.
225
788321
3182
13:23
We blasted炮轟 that off.
226
791527
1763
13:25
We've我們已經 tested測試 and polished
the first mirror鏡子.
227
793314
2719
13:28
We've我們已經 cast the second第二
and the third第三 mirrors鏡子.
228
796057
2589
13:30
And we're about to cast the fourth第四 mirror鏡子.
229
798670
2269
13:32
We had a series系列 of reviews評論 this year,
230
800963
1887
that came來了 in and reviewed回顧 us,
231
802874
2542
13:37
and said, "You're ready準備
to go to construction施工."
232
805440
2531
13:39
And so we plan計劃 on building建造 this telescope望遠鏡
with the first four mirrors鏡子.
233
807995
3349
13:43
We want to get on the air空氣 quickly很快,
and be taking服用 science科學 data數據 --
234
811368
4129
13:47
what we astronomers天文學家 call
"first light," in 2121.
235
815521
4579
13:53
And the full充分 telescope望遠鏡 will be finished
in the middle中間 of the next下一個 decade,
236
821031
3446
13:56
with all seven mirrors鏡子.
237
824501
1396
13:58
So we're now poised準備 to look back
at the distant遙遠 universe宇宙,
238
826542
3558
14:03
We'll be able能夠 to study研究 other planets行星
in exquisite精美 detail詳情.
240
831804
4133
14:08
But for me, one of the most
exciting扣人心弦 things about building建造 the GMT格林威治標準時間
241
836424
3737
14:12
is the opportunity機會
to actually其實 discover發現 something
242
840185
2830
14:15
that we don't know about --
that we can't even imagine想像 at this point,
243
843039
3270
14:18
something completely全然 new.
244
846333
1642
14:20
And my hope希望 is that with the construction施工
of this and other facilities設備,
245
848713
3630
14:24
that many許多 young年輕 women婦女 and men男人
will be inspired啟發 to reach達到 for the stars明星.
246
852367
5210
14:30
Thank you very much.
247
858036
1272
14:31
ObrigadoObrigado.

14:40
Stay with me, because
I have a question for you.
251
868374
2267
14:42
You mentioned提到 different不同 facilities設備.
252
870665
2397
14:45
So the Magellan麥哲倫 Telescope望遠鏡 is going up,
but also ALMAALMA and others其他 in Chile智利
253
873086
4853
14:49
and elsewhere別處, including包含 in Hawaii夏威夷.
254
877963
2136
14:52
Is it about cooperation合作
and complementarity互補性, or about competition競爭?
255
880772
4076
14:56
I know there's competition競爭 in terms條款
of funding資金, but what about the science科學?
256
884872
3722
15:00
Wendy溫迪 Freedman弗里德曼: In terms條款 of the science科學,
they're very complementary補充.
257
888618
3217
15:03
The telescopes望遠鏡 that are in space空間,
