ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Marjan van Aubel - Solar designer
Marjan van Aubel promotes extreme energy efficiency through intelligent design.

Why you should listen

Marjan van Aubel is an award-winning solar designer whose innovative practice spans the fields of sustainability, design and technology. In collaboration with scientists, engineers and institutions -- such as Swarovski and ECN.TNO, the Dutch Energy Centre -- van Aubel works to promote extreme energy efficiency through intelligent design. From working with expandable materials to domestically integrating solar cells that mimic the process of photosynthesis in plants, she adds a double function to objects and puts them to work: a table is not just a table, but also a producer of electricity.

Van Aubel strives to redefine our current relationship with solar technology and accelerate its transition to ubiquity. Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2012 and the Rietveld Academy DesignLAB in 2009, she has since exhibited at world-class institutions, including the V&A (London), the Design Museum (London) and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam). Her work is also part of the permanent collection at the MoMA in New York, the Vitra Design Museum, Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, The Montreal Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia.

00:17
And there, on top最佳, I saw
this beautiful美麗, stone, remote遠程 hut棚屋,

00:24
And every一切 time I see solar太陽能 panels面板,
I get very enthusiastic
3
12792
3809
00:28
It's this technology技術 that takes sunlight陽光,
which哪一個 is free自由 and available可得到,

00:50
I work in the triangle三角形 of design設計,

11
38708
4643
00:55
I strive努力 for extreme極端 efficiency效率,
12

16
56167
3184
01:11
And, I mean, it all went quite相當 well,
17
59375
3476
01:14
but it always felt
that something was missing失踪.
18
62875
2583
01:18
And it was, until直到 I read the book
called the "Solar太陽能 Revolution革命,"
19
66583
4268
01:22
where it says that within one hour小時
we receive接收 enough足夠 sunlight陽光
20
70875
4518
01:27
to provide提供 the world世界

21
75417
2267

01:32
One hour小時.
23

01:34
And since以來 then, I realized實現
I just want to focus焦點 on solar太陽能.
24
82083
4268
01:38
Scientists科學家們 all over the world世界
25
86375
1476
01:39
have been focusing調焦 on making製造
solar太陽能 panels面板 more efficient高效 and cheaper便宜.
26
87875
4726
01:44
So the price價錢 of solar太陽能
has dropped下降 enormously巨大.
27
92625
2851
01:47
And this is because China中國
started開始 producing生產 them on a large scale規模.
28
95500
4667
01:53
And also their efficiency效率
has increased增加 a lot.
29
101667
2351
01:56
They now even have an efficiency效率
of 44.5 percent百分.
30
104042
3833
02:01
But if you think
about the image圖片 of solar太陽能 cells細胞,
31
109292
3267
02:04
it's kind of stayed the same相同
for the last 60 years年份.
32
112583
3375
02:09
It's still this technology技術
just stacked堆疊 onto something.
33
117333
3209
02:13
And solar太陽能 cells細胞 need to be much better
integrated集成 into our environment環境.
34
121708
3792
02:19
Climate氣候 change更改 is the biggest最大
problem問題 of our time.
35
127292
3476
02:22
And we can't rely依靠 on the others其他 --
the government政府, the engineers工程師 --
36
130792
3184
02:26
to make positive changes變化.
37
134000
1351
02:27
We all can contribute有助於 towards change更改.
38
135375
2500
02:31
Like I said, I'm a designer設計師
39
139000
1518
02:32
and I would like to change更改
things through通過 design設計.
40
140542
2500
02:36
Let me give you some examples例子 of my work.
41
144458
2726
02:39
I'm collaborating合作 with Swarovski施華洛世奇,
the crystal水晶 company公司.
42
147208
3435
02:42
And if you cut crystals晶體 in a certain某些 way,
43
150667
2351
02:45
you are able能夠 to bend彎曲 and direct直接 the light
onto a certain某些 place地點.
44
153042
4226
02:49
So I use these crystals晶體
to focus焦點 the light onto a solar太陽能 panel面板,
45
157292
3976
02:53
making製造 them more efficient高效,
but using運用 aesthetics美學.
46
161292
2791
02:57
So you take the solar太陽能 crystal水晶
with you in the light,
47
165125
2476
02:59
there's a battery電池 in the solar太陽能 cell細胞,
48
167625
2101
03:01
you put it in a docking對接 station
49
169750
1726
03:03
and you are able能夠 to power功率
these chandeliers吊燈.
50
171500
2393
03:05
So you're literally
bringing使 the light indoors在室內.
51
173917
2416
03:10
I got completely全然 hooked迷上 on solar太陽能
when I came來了 across橫過 this technology技術
52
178500
3518
03:18
and they are based基於
on photosynthesis光合作用 in plants植物.
55
186583
3125
03:22
Where the green綠色 chlorophyl葉綠素
converts轉換 light into sugar for plants植物,
56
190667
3392
03:26
these cells細胞 convert兌換 light
into electricity電力.
57
194083
2584
03:31
The best最好 thing is, they even work indoors在室內.
58
199042
2791
03:34
So different不同 colors顏色
have different不同 efficiency效率,
59
202792
2184
03:37
depending根據 on their place地點
on the color顏色 spectrum光譜.
60
205000
2191
03:39
So, for example,
red is more efficient高效 than blue藍色.
61
207215
3917
03:44
So if I hear this as a designer
62
212708
1976
03:46
a colored有色 surface表面,
a glass玻璃 colored有色 surface表面,
63
214708
3018
03:49
color顏色 that's mostly大多
just used for esthetics美學,
64
217750
2684
03:52
now gets得到 an extra額外 function功能
and is able能夠 to harvest收成 electricity電力,
65
220458
4393
03:56
I think, where can we apply應用 this, then?
66
224875
3184
04:00
This is Current當前 Table,
67
228083
1768
這是 Current 桌,
04:01
where the whole整個 tabletop桌上
consists of these colored有色 solar太陽能 cells細胞.
68
229875
3750
04:06
There are batteries電池 in the legs
69
234667
1684
04:08
where you can charge收費 your phone電話
through通過 USBUSB ports港口.
70
236375
2958
04:13
And in my work,
it's always very important重要,
71
241000
2059
04:15
the balance平衡 between之間
efficiency效率 and aesthetics美學.
72
243083
2310
04:17
So that's why the table is orange
73
245417
1620
04:19
because it is a very stable穩定
04:24
And this is always
the most asked question I get:
75
252042
2351
04:26
"OK, great, but how many許多 phones手機
can I charge收費 from this, then?"
76
254417
2916
04:30
And before I go to this
complicated複雜 answer回答 of like,
77
258500
2434
04:32
"Well, where is the table,
does it have enough足夠 light,
78
260958
2518
04:35
is it next下一個 to a window窗口?"
79
263500
1559
04:37
The table now has sensors
that read the light intensity強度 of the room房間.
80
265083
3893
04:41
So through通過 an app應用 we developed發達
81
269000
1934
04:42
you can literally按照字面 follow跟隨
how much light it's getting得到,
82
270958
2518
04:45
and how full充分 the battery電池 is.
83
273500
1750
04:48
I'm actually其實 proud驕傲,
because yesterday昨天 we installed安裝 a table
84
276750
3476
04:52
at Stichting斯蒂奇亭 Doen's杜恩的 offices辦事處 in Amsterdam阿姆斯特丹
85
280250
2684
04:54
and, right at this moment時刻,
86
282958
1268
04:56
our Queen女王 Maxima極大 is charging充電
a phone電話 from this table.
87
284250
3768
05:00
It's cool.
88
288042
1309
05:01
(Applause
89
289375
4893
05:06
So the more surface表面 you have,
the more energy能源 you can harvest收成.
90
294292
4184
05:10
These are Current當前 Windows視窗,
91
298500
1601
這是 Current 窗,
05:12
where we replaced更換 all windows視窗
in a gallery畫廊 in London倫敦, in Soho蘇荷,
92
300125
4851
05:17
with this modern現代 version of stained染色 glass玻璃.
93
305000
3101
05:20
So people from the street
could come and charge收費 their phones手機
94
308125
2976
05:23
through通過 the window窗口 ledges列格斯.
95
311125
1333
05:25
So I'm giving extra額外 functions功能 to objects對象.
96
313833
2226
05:28
A window窗口 doesn't have to be
just a window窗口 anymore.
97
316083
2518
05:30
It can also function功能
as a little power功率 station.
98
318625
3000
05:35
So, here I am, talking
about how much I love solar太陽能,
99
323583
4726
05:40
but I don't have solar太陽能 panels面板 on my roof屋頂.
100
328333
2935
05:43
I live生活 in the center中央 of Amsterdam阿姆斯特丹,
101
331292
1726
05:45
I don't own擁有 the house and it's a monument紀念碑,
102
333042
2017
05:47
so it's not possible可能 and not allowed允許.
103
335083
2209
05:50
So how can you make solar太陽能 cells細胞
more accessible無障礙 and for everyone大家,
104
338542
4142
05:54
and not only for the people
that can afford給予 a sustainable可持續發展 lifestyle生活方式?
105
342708
3375
05:59
We now have the opportunity機會
106
347708
1476
06:01
to integrate整合 solar太陽能 on the place地點
where we directly need it.
107
349208
3268
06:04
And there are so many許多
amazing驚人 technologies技術 out there.
108
352500
3434
06:07
If I look around now,
I see every一切 surface表面 as an opportunity機會.
109
355958
3667
06:13
For example, I was driving主動
in the train培養 through通過 the Westland韋斯特蘭,
110

06:16
the area in the Netherlands荷蘭

111
364125
3309
06:19
There I saw all this glass玻璃 and thought,
112
367458
2560
06:22
what if we integrate整合 those
06:25
What if we integrate整合 traditional傳統 farming農業
114
373750

that requires要求 a lot of energy能源
115
376583
