is the tiny village of Elle,
close to Lista.
close to Lista.
1
3760
4056
é a pequena aldea de Elle, preto de Lista.
00:19
It's right at the southernmost
tip of Norway.
tip of Norway.
2
7840
2360
Está no punto más ao sur de Noruega.
00:23
And on January 2 this year,
3
11320
2416
E o 2 de xaneiro deste ano
00:25
an elderly guy who lives in the village,
4
13760
2216
un ancián que vive nesta aldea,
00:28
he went out to see what was cast ashore
5
16000
2896
foi ver o que a marea trouxera
00:30
during a recent storm.
6
18920
1600
nunha tormenta recente.
00:34
And on a patch of grass
right next to the water's edge,
right next to the water's edge,
7
22080
3216
E nunha morea de herba
xusto á beira da auga,
xusto á beira da auga,
00:37
he found a wetsuit.
8
25320
2000
atopou un traxe de neopreno.
00:39
It was grey and black,
and he thought it looked cheap.
and he thought it looked cheap.
9
27920
3400
Era gris e negro
e pensou que parecía barato.
e pensou que parecía barato.
00:44
Out of each leg of the wetsuit
10
32240
2056
De cada perna do traxe
00:46
there were sticking two white bones.
11
34320
3000
estaban a saír dous ósos brancos.
00:50
It was clearly the remains
of a human being.
of a human being.
12
38120
2200
Eran claramente os restos dun ser humano.
00:54
And usually, in Norway,
dead people are identified quickly.
dead people are identified quickly.
13
42160
3136
E normalmente, en Noruega,
os mortos identifícanse rápido.
os mortos identifícanse rápido.
00:57
So the police started searching
14
45320
1536
A policía comezou a buscar entón
00:58
through missing reports
from the local area,
from the local area,
15
46880
2096
en informes de desaparecidos pola zona,
01:01
national missing reports,
16
49000
1216
en informes nacionais
01:02
and looked for accidents
with a possible connection.
with a possible connection.
17
50240
2456
e buscou accidentes
con posibles conexións.
con posibles conexións.
01:04
They found nothing.
18
52720
1200
Non atoparon nada.
01:06
So they ran a DNA profile,
19
54920
1496
Entón fixeron un perfil de ADN
01:08
and they started searching
internationally through Interpol.
internationally through Interpol.
20
56440
3136
e comezaron a buscar
internacionalmente a través da Interpol.
internacionalmente a través da Interpol.
01:11
Nothing.
21
59600
1200
Nada.
01:14
This was a person
that nobody seemed to be missing.
that nobody seemed to be missing.
22
62240
3520
Era unha persoa
que ninguén parecía botar a faltar.
que ninguén parecía botar a faltar.
01:18
It was an invisible life
heading for a nameless grave.
heading for a nameless grave.
23
66520
3640
Era unha vida invisible
que ía acabar nunha tumba anónima.
que ía acabar nunha tumba anónima.
01:24
But then, after a month,
24
72000
1736
Pero despois dun mes,
01:25
the police in Norway got a message
from the police in the Netherlands.
from the police in the Netherlands.
25
73760
4296
a policía de Noruega recibiu
unha mensaxe da policía holandesa.
unha mensaxe da policía holandesa.
01:30
A couple of months earlier,
they had found a body,
they had found a body,
26
78080
2616
Un par de meses antes, atoparan un corpo,
01:32
in an identical wetsuit,
and they had no idea who this person was.
and they had no idea who this person was.
27
80720
4280
cun traxe idéntico,
e non sabían quen era esa persoa.
e non sabían quen era esa persoa.
01:37
But the police in the Netherlands
managed to trace the wetsuit
managed to trace the wetsuit
28
85791
2905
Pero a policía holandesa
conseguiu rastrexar o traxe
conseguiu rastrexar o traxe
01:40
by an RFID chip that was sewn in the suit.
29
88720
3376
grazas a un chip RFID que tiña cosido.
01:44
So they were then able to tell
30
92120
2176
Así que puideron saber
01:46
that both wetsuits were bought
by the same customer at the same time,
by the same customer at the same time,
31
94320
5336
que os dous traxes os mercara
á vez o mesmo cliente,
á vez o mesmo cliente,
01:51
October 7, 2014,
32
99680
2456
o 7 de outubro de 2014,
01:54
in the French city of Calais
by the English Channel.
by the English Channel.
33
102160
2600
na cidade francesa de Calais
na Canle da Mancha.
na Canle da Mancha.
01:57
But this was all
they were able to figure out.
they were able to figure out.
34
105760
3176
Pero iso foi todo
o que conseguiron desvelar.
o que conseguiron desvelar.
02:00
The customer paid cash.
35
108960
1656
O cliente pagou en efectivo.
02:02
There was no surveillance
footage from the shop.
footage from the shop.
36
110640
2616
Non había gravacións da tenda.
02:05
So it became a cold case.
37
113280
1480
Quedou coma un caso aberto.
02:07
We heard this story,
38
115840
1216
Escoitamos esta historia,
02:09
and it triggered me and my colleague,
photographer Tomm Christiansen,
photographer Tomm Christiansen,
39
117080
3239
e chamounos a atención a min
e ao fotógrafo Tomm Christiansen
e ao fotógrafo Tomm Christiansen
02:12
and we of course had the obvious question:
who were these people?
who were these people?
40
120343
3073
e por suposto preguntámonos o obvio:
quen eran estas persoas?
quen eran estas persoas?
02:15
At the time, I'd barely
heard about Calais,
heard about Calais,
41
123440
2000
Daquela, nunca oíra nada sobre Calais,
02:17
but it took about two
or three seconds to figure out
or three seconds to figure out
42
125464
2831
pero levoume dous ou tres segundos
darme conta
darme conta
02:20
Calais is basically known for two things.
43
128320
2936
de que Calais é coñecida por dúas cousas:
02:23
It's the spot in continental Europe
closest to Britain,
closest to Britain,
44
131280
2816
É o lugar de Europa continental
máis próximo ao Reino Unido
máis próximo ao Reino Unido
02:26
and a lot of migrants and refugees
are staying in this camp
are staying in this camp
45
134120
3536
e moitos migrantes e refuxiados
están nestes campamentos
están nestes campamentos
02:29
and are trying desperately
to cross over to Britain.
to cross over to Britain.
46
137680
3216
e intentan desesperadamente
cruzar ao Reino Unido.
cruzar ao Reino Unido.
02:32
And right there was a plausible theory
about the identity of the two people,
about the identity of the two people,
47
140920
4936
E velaí unha teoría plausible
sobre a identidade das dúas persoas,
sobre a identidade das dúas persoas,
02:37
and the police made this theory as well.
48
145880
2376
teoría que a policía tamén postulou.
02:40
Because if you or I or anybody else
with a firm connection to Europe
with a firm connection to Europe
49
148280
3191
Porque se calquera de nós
con vínculos firmes en Europa
con vínculos firmes en Europa
02:43
goes missing off the coast of France,
people would just know.
people would just know.
50
151495
3201
desaparece da costa de Francia,
a xente saberíao.
a xente saberíao.
02:46
Your friends or family
would report you missing,
would report you missing,
51
154720
2256
A nosa familia e amigos
denunciaría a desaparición,
denunciaría a desaparición,
02:49
the police would come search for you,
the media would know,
the media would know,
52
157000
2776
a policía buscaríanos,
os medios saberíano,
os medios saberíano,
02:51
and there would be
pictures of you on lampposts.
pictures of you on lampposts.
53
159800
2256
e habería imaxes coa nosa cara nos farois.
02:54
It's difficult to disappear
without a trace.
without a trace.
54
162080
2048
É difícil desaparecer sen deixar rastro.
02:57
But if you just fled the war in Syria,
55
165120
1856
Pero se escapaches da guerra en Siria,
02:59
and your family,
if you have any family left,
if you have any family left,
56
167000
2976
e a túa familia, se aínda a tes,
03:02
don't necessarily know where you are,
57
170000
2056
non sabe necesariamente onde estás,
03:04
and you're staying here illegally
58
172080
2016
e estás aquí de forma ilegal
03:06
amongst thousands of others
who come and go every day.
who come and go every day.
59
174120
2840
no medio doutros miles
que van e veñen cada día.
que van e veñen cada día.
03:09
Well, if you disappear one day,
nobody will notice.
nobody will notice.
60
177440
3680
Ben, se desapareces un día,
ninguén o saberá.
ninguén o saberá.
03:13
The police won't come search for you
because nobody knows you're gone.
because nobody knows you're gone.
61
181600
3286
A policía non te buscará
porque ninguén sabe que desapareciches.
porque ninguén sabe que desapareciches.
03:18
And this is what happened
to Shadi Omar Kataf
to Shadi Omar Kataf
62
186160
2736
E isto é o que lle pasou
a Shadi Omar Kataf
a Shadi Omar Kataf
03:20
and Mouaz Al Balkhi from Syria.
63
188920
2320
e a Mouaz Al Balkhi de Siria.
03:24
Me and Tomm went to Calais
for the first time in April this year,
for the first time in April this year,
64
192768
3048
Tomm e máis eu fomos a Calais
por primeira vez en abril deste ano,
por primeira vez en abril deste ano,
03:27
and after three months of investigation,
we were able to tell the story
we were able to tell the story
65
195840
3336
e despois de tres meses de investigación,
puidemos contar a historia
puidemos contar a historia
03:31
about how these two young men
fled the war in Syria,
fled the war in Syria,
66
199200
2776
de como estes dous mozos
que escaparon da guerra de Siria,
que escaparon da guerra de Siria,
03:34
ended up stuck in Calais,
67
202000
1736
acabaron atoados en Calais,
03:35
bought wetsuits and drowned
in what seems to have been an attempt
in what seems to have been an attempt
68
203760
3376
compraron traxes de neopreno
e afogaron no que parece ser un intento
e afogaron no que parece ser un intento
03:39
to swim across the English Channel
in order to reach England.
in order to reach England.
69
207160
2960
de nadar a través da Canle da Mancha
para chegar a Inglaterra.
para chegar a Inglaterra.
03:43
It is a story about the fact
that everybody has a name,
that everybody has a name,
70
211280
3216
É unha historia sobre o feito
de que todos temos un nome,
de que todos temos un nome,
03:46
everybody has a story,
everybody is someone.
everybody is someone.
71
214520
2440
todos temos unha historia,
todos somos alguén.
todos somos alguén.
03:49
But it is also a story about what
it's like to be a refugee in Europe today.
it's like to be a refugee in Europe today.
72
217480
5616
Pero tamén é unha historia sobre
como é ser un refuxiado hoxe en Europa.
como é ser un refuxiado hoxe en Europa.
03:55
So this is where we started our search.
73
223120
1936
Aquí comezamos a nosa procura.
03:57
This is in Calais.
74
225080
1496
Isto é en Calais.
03:58
Right now, between 3,500
and 5,000 people are living here
and 5,000 people are living here
75
226600
3096
Agora mesmo, entre 3.500 e 5.000 persoas
viven aquí en condicións pésimas.
04:01
under horrible conditions.
76
229720
1576
04:03
It has been dubbed
the worst refugee camp in Europe.
the worst refugee camp in Europe.
77
231320
2976
É considerado
o peor campamento de refuxiados de Europa.
o peor campamento de refuxiados de Europa.
04:06
Limited access to food,
limited access to water,
limited access to water,
78
234320
3056
Acceso limitado a alimentos,
acceso limitado á auga,
acceso limitado á auga,
04:09
limited access to health care.
79
237400
1496
así como á atención médica.
04:10
Disease and infections are widespread.
80
238920
2280
As enfermidades e infeccións esténdense.
04:13
And they're all stuck here
because they're trying to get to England
because they're trying to get to England
81
241920
3176
E están todos atrapados aquí
porque intentan chegar a Inglaterra
porque intentan chegar a Inglaterra
04:17
in order to claim asylum.
82
245120
1416
para poder soliticar asilo.
04:18
And they do that by hiding in the back
of trucks headed for the ferry,
of trucks headed for the ferry,
83
246560
3536
E inténtano agochándose
detrás de camións que van ao ferry.
detrás de camións que van ao ferry.
04:22
or the Eurotunnel,
84
250120
1200
ou ao Eurotúnel,
04:24
or they sneak inside
the tunnel terminal at night
the tunnel terminal at night
85
252440
2336
ou cóanse de noite
dentro da terminal do túnel
dentro da terminal do túnel
04:26
to try to hide on the trains.
86
254800
1880
para intentar agocharse nos trens.
04:29
Most want to go to Britain
because they know the language,
because they know the language,
87
257519
2937
A maioría van ao Reino Unido
porque coñecen a lingua,
porque coñecen a lingua,
04:32
and so they figure it would be easier
to restart their lives from there.
to restart their lives from there.
88
260480
3496
e pensan que será máis sinxelo
comezar de novo as súas vidas alí.
comezar de novo as súas vidas alí.
04:36
They want to work, they want to study,
89
264000
1816
Queren traballar, queren estudar,
04:37
they want to be able
to continue their lives.
to continue their lives.
90
265840
2136
queren poder continuar coas súas vidas.
04:40
A lot of these people are
highly educated and skilled workers.
highly educated and skilled workers.
91
268000
2936
Moitos teñen boa formación
e son traballadores cualificados.
e son traballadores cualificados.
04:42
If you go to Calais and talk to refugees,
you'll meet lawyers, politicians,
you'll meet lawyers, politicians,
92
270960
3536
Se vas a Calais e falas cos refuxiados
atoparás avogados, políticos,
atoparás avogados, políticos,
04:46
engineers, graphic designers,
farmers, soldiers.
farmers, soldiers.
93
274520
2656
enxeñeiros, deseñadores gráficos,
agricultores, soldados.
agricultores, soldados.
04:49
You've got the whole spectrum.
94
277200
1429
Hai de todo.
04:51
But who all of these people are
95
279520
2376
Pero nunca dicimos quen son
04:53
usually gets lost in the way
we talk about refugees and migrants,
we talk about refugees and migrants,
96
281920
4456
cando falamos de refuxiados e migrantes,
04:58
because we usually do that in statistics.
97
286400
3016
xa que o adoitamos facer en estatísticas.
05:01
So you have 60 million refugees globally.
98
289440
2176
Hai 60 millóns de refuxiados no mundo.
05:03
About half a million
have made the crossing
have made the crossing
99
291640
2016
Cerca de medio millón
05:05
over the Mediterranean
into Europe so far this year,
into Europe so far this year,
100
293680
2456
cruzaron o Mediterráneo
cara a Europa este ano.
cara a Europa este ano.
05:08
and roughly 4,000 are staying in Calais.
101
296160
2256
e aproximadamente 4000 están en Calais.
05:10
But these are numbers,
102
298440
1496
Pero estes son só números,
05:11
and the numbers don't say anything
about who these people are,
about who these people are,
103
299960
3816
e os números non din ren
sobre quen son estas persoas,
sobre quen son estas persoas,
05:15
where they came from, or why they're here.
104
303800
2480
de onde veñen, ou por que están aquí.
05:19
And first, I want to tell you
about one of them.
about one of them.
105
307640
2239
E primeiro, quero falarvos dun deles.
05:22
This is 22-year-old
Mouaz Al Balkhi from Syria.
Mouaz Al Balkhi from Syria.
106
310520
3576
Este é Mouaz Al Balkhi, sirio de 22 anos.
05:26
We first heard about him
after being in Calais the first time
after being in Calais the first time
107
314120
2896
Soubemos del cando estivemos
en Calais por primeira vez
en Calais por primeira vez
05:29
looking for answers to the theory
of the two dead bodies.
of the two dead bodies.
108
317040
2776
buscando respostas
á teoría dos dous cadáveres.
á teoría dos dous cadáveres.
05:31
And after a while, we heard this story
109
319840
2136
E despois dun tempo, escoitamos a historia
05:34
about a Syrian man
who was living in Bradford in England,
who was living in Bradford in England,
110
322000
3296
dun home sirio
que vivía en Bradford en Inglaterra,
que vivía en Bradford en Inglaterra,
05:37
and had been desperately searching
for his nephew Mouaz for months.
for his nephew Mouaz for months.
111
325320
3776
e levaba meses buscando desesperadamente
ao seu sobriño Mouaz.
ao seu sobriño Mouaz.
05:41
And it turned out the last time
anybody had heard anything from Mouaz
anybody had heard anything from Mouaz
112
329120
3976
E a última vez que alguén
escoitou falar de Mouaz
escoitou falar de Mouaz
05:45
was October 7, 2014.
113
333120
2656
foi o 7 de outubro de 2014.
05:47
That was the same date
the wetsuits were bought.
the wetsuits were bought.
114
335800
2560
A mesma data en que se mercaron os traxes.
05:51
So we flew over there and we met the uncle
115
339240
2136
Así que voamos alí e falamos co tío
05:53
and we did DNA samples of him,
116
341400
2096
e tomamos mostras do seu ADN,
05:55
and later on got additional DNA samples
from Mouaz's closest relative
from Mouaz's closest relative
117
343520
3296
e máis tarde conseguimos mostras
do familiar máis cercano de Mouaz
do familiar máis cercano de Mouaz
05:58
who now lives in Jordan.
118
346840
1200
que vive en Xordania.
06:00
The analysis concluded
119
348600
2096
A análise concluíu
06:02
the body who was found in a wetsuit
on a beach in the Netherlands
on a beach in the Netherlands
120
350720
3496
que o corpo encontrado
nun traxe na praia en Holanda
nun traxe na praia en Holanda
06:06
was actually Mouaz Al Balkhi.
121
354240
1920
era Mouaz Al Balkhi.
06:09
And while we were doing
all this investigation,
all this investigation,
122
357720
2496
E mentres faciamos
toda esta investigación,
toda esta investigación,
06:12
we got to know Mouaz's story.
123
360240
1840
coñecemos a historia de Mouaz.
06:15
He was born in the Syrian capital
of Damascus in 1991.
of Damascus in 1991.
124
363320
3896
Naceu en Damasco, capital siria, en 1991.
06:19
He was raised in a middle class family,
125
367240
1858
Criouse nunha familia de clase media,
06:21
and his father in the middle there
is a chemical engineer
is a chemical engineer
126
369122
2667
e seu pai, no medio,
é un enxeñeiro químico
é un enxeñeiro químico
06:23
who spent 11 years in prison for belonging
to the political opposition in Syria.
to the political opposition in Syria.
127
371813
4283
que pasou 11 anos en prisión por pertencer
á oposición política en Siria.
á oposición política en Siria.
06:28
While his father was in prison,
128
376120
1616
Mentres o pai estaba en prisión,
06:29
Mouaz took responsibility
and he cared for his three sisters.
and he cared for his three sisters.
129
377760
3256
Mouaz responsabilizouse
e coidou das súas tres irmás.
e coidou das súas tres irmás.
06:33
They said he was that kind of guy.
130
381040
1976
Dixeron que era ese tipo de persoa.
06:35
Mouaz studied to become
an electrical engineer
an electrical engineer
131
383040
2776
Mouaz estudou para enxeñeiro eléctrico
06:37
at the University of Damascus.
132
385840
2576
na Universidade de Damasco.
06:40
So a couple of years into the Syrian war,
133
388440
1976
Uns anos despois
do comezo da guerra siria,
do comezo da guerra siria,
06:42
the family fled Damascus and went
to the neighboring country, Jordan.
to the neighboring country, Jordan.
134
390440
4136
a familia fuxiu de Damasco
e foi ao país veciño, Xordania.
e foi ao país veciño, Xordania.
06:46
Their father had problems
finding work in Jordan,
finding work in Jordan,
135
394600
2536
O pai tiña problemas
para atopar traballo en Xordania,
para atopar traballo en Xordania,
06:49
and Mouaz could not continue his studies,
136
397160
1976
e Mouaz non podía seguir cos estudos,
06:51
so he figured, "OK, the best thing
I can do to help my family
I can do to help my family
137
399160
3296
así que pensou: «Vale, o mellor
que podo facer para axudarlles
que podo facer para axudarlles
06:54
would be to go somewhere
where I can finish my studies
where I can finish my studies
138
402480
2736
é ir a algún lugar
onde poida rematar os meus estudos
onde poida rematar os meus estudos
06:57
and find work."
139
405240
1536
e encontrar traballo».
06:58
So he goes to Turkey.
140
406800
1416
Así que marcha a Turquía.
07:00
In Turkey, he's not accepted
at a university,
at a university,
141
408240
2640
En Turquía, non o aceptan na universidade,
07:03
and once he had left Jordan as a refugee,
he was not allowed to reenter.
he was not allowed to reenter.
142
411440
4776
e logo de deixar Xordania sendo refuxiado,
non lle permiten volver.
non lle permiten volver.
07:08
So then he decides to head for the UK,
143
416240
2616
Así que decide ir ao Reino Unido,
07:10
where his uncle lives.
144
418880
1536
onde vive seu tío.
07:12
He makes it into Algeria,
walks into Libya,
walks into Libya,
145
420440
3136
Chega a Alxeria, camiña por Libia,
07:15
pays a people smuggler to help him
with the crossing into Italy by boat,
with the crossing into Italy by boat,
146
423600
3816
págalle a un traficante de persoas
para cruzar a Italia en barco,
para cruzar a Italia en barco,
07:19
and from there on he heads to Dunkirk,
147
427440
1896
e dende aí vai a Dunkerque,
07:21
the city right next to Calais
by the English Channel.
by the English Channel.
148
429360
2680
a cidade próxima a Calais
pola Canle da Mancha.
pola Canle da Mancha.
07:25
We know he made at least 12 failed
attempts to cross the English Channel
attempts to cross the English Channel
149
433955
3381
Sabemos que intentou cruzar a Canle
sen éxito polo menos 12 veces
sen éxito polo menos 12 veces
07:29
by hiding in a truck.
150
437360
1600
agochándose nun camión.
07:31
But at some point,
he must have given up all hope.
he must have given up all hope.
151
439520
2680
Pero nalgún momento,
debeu perder calquera esperanza.
debeu perder calquera esperanza.
07:35
The last night we know he was alive,
152
443360
2056
A última noite que sabemos que estaba vivo
07:37
he spent at a cheap hotel
close to the train station in Dunkirk.
close to the train station in Dunkirk.
153
445440
3520
estivo nun hotel barato
cerca da estación de tren en Dunkerque.
cerca da estación de tren en Dunkerque.
07:41
We found his name in the records,
and he seems to have stayed there alone.
and he seems to have stayed there alone.
154
449520
3477
Atopamos o seu nome nos rexistros,
e parece que estivo alí só.
e parece que estivo alí só.
07:45
The day after, he went into Calais,
entered a sports shop
entered a sports shop
155
453680
3936
O día seguinte, foi a Calais,
entrou nunha tenda de deportes
entrou nunha tenda de deportes
07:49
a couple of minutes
before 8 o'clock in the evening,
before 8 o'clock in the evening,
156
457640
2456
un par de minutos antes das 8 da tarde
07:52
along with Shadi Kataf.
157
460120
1536
canda Shadi Kataf.
07:53
They both bought wetsuits,
158
461680
2016
Os dous compraron traxes de neopreno,
07:55
and the woman in the shop
159
463720
1416
e a muller da tenda
07:57
was the last person we know of
to have seen them alive.
to have seen them alive.
160
465160
2572
foi a última persoa
que sabemos que os viu vivos.
que sabemos que os viu vivos.
08:01
We have tried to figure out
where Shadi met Mouaz,
where Shadi met Mouaz,
161
469760
3296
Intentamos pescudar
onde Shadi coñeceu a Mouaz,
onde Shadi coñeceu a Mouaz,
08:05
but we weren't able to do that.
162
473080
2416
mais non o conseguimos.
08:07
But they do have a similar story.
163
475520
2096
Pero teñen unha historia similar.
08:09
We first heard about Shadi
after a cousin of his, living in Germany,
after a cousin of his, living in Germany,
164
477640
3896
Oímos falar de Shadi
grazas ao seu curmán, de Alemaña,
grazas ao seu curmán, de Alemaña,
08:13
had read an Arabic translation
of the story made of Mouaz on Facebook.
of the story made of Mouaz on Facebook.
165
481560
4456
que lera unha tradución árabe da historia
que se fixera de Mouaz en Facebook.
que se fixera de Mouaz en Facebook.
08:18
So we got in touch with him.
166
486040
1334
Así que falamos con el.
08:20
Shadi, a couple of years older than Mouaz,
167
488920
2536
Shadi, un par de anos maior que Mouaz,
08:23
was also raised in Damascus.
168
491480
2376
tamén se criou en Damasco.
08:25
He was a working kind of guy.
169
493880
1536
Era un home traballador.
08:27
He ran a tire repair shop
and later worked in a printing company.
and later worked in a printing company.
170
495440
3416
Tiña unha tenda de reparar pneumáticos
e logo traballou nunha imprenta.
e logo traballou nunha imprenta.
08:30
He lived with his extended family,
171
498880
1896
Vivía coa súa extensa familia,
08:32
but their house got bombed
early in the war.
early in the war.
172
500800
2936
pero bombardearan
a súa casa ao comezo da guerra.
a súa casa ao comezo da guerra.
08:35
So the family fled to an area
of Damascus known as Camp Yarmouk.
of Damascus known as Camp Yarmouk.
173
503760
4920
Así que a familia fuxiu á área de Damasco
coñecida como Campamento Yarmouk.
coñecida como Campamento Yarmouk.
08:43
Yarmouk is being described
as the worst place to live
as the worst place to live
174
511040
3896
Yarmouk foi descrito
como o peor lugar da Terra
como o peor lugar da Terra
08:46
on planet Earth.
175
514960
1199
onde pode un vivir.
08:49
They've been bombed by the military,
they've been besieged,
they've been besieged,
176
517240
2775
Son bombardeados polos militares,
sofren asedio
sofren asedio
08:52
they've been stormed by ISIS
177
520039
1382
atácaos o ISIS
08:53
and they've been cut off
from supplies for years.
from supplies for years.
178
521445
2851
e levan anos sen provisións.
08:56
There was a UN official
who visited last year,
who visited last year,
179
524320
2143
Había un oficial da ONU
que foi o ano pasado,
que foi o ano pasado,
08:58
and he said, "They ate all the grass
so there was no grass left."
so there was no grass left."
180
526487
5120
e dixo: «comeron toda a herba
así que xa non quedaba herba».
así que xa non quedaba herba».
09:05
Out of a population of 150,000,
181
533440
2376
Dunha poboación de 150.000
09:07
only 18,000 are believed
to still be left in Yarmouk.
to still be left in Yarmouk.
182
535840
4096
crese que só 18.000
están aínda en Yarmouk.
están aínda en Yarmouk.
09:11
Shadi and his sisters got out.
183
539960
2056
Shadi e as súas irmáns escaparon.
09:14
The parents are still stuck inside.
184
542040
2000
Os seus pais aínda están atrapados dentro.
09:18
So Shadi and one of his sisters,
they fled to Libya.
they fled to Libya.
185
546400
3536
Así que Shadi e unha das súas irmás
fuxiron a Libia.
fuxiron a Libia.
09:21
This was after the fall of Gaddafi,
186
549960
1667
Isto foi logo da caída de Gaddafi,
09:23
but before Libya turned
into full-blown civil war.
into full-blown civil war.
187
551651
3240
pero antes de que Libia caese
nunha total guerra civil.
nunha total guerra civil.
09:28
And in this last remaining
sort of stability in Libya,
sort of stability in Libya,
188
556000
3456
Nesta última pseudoestabilidade en Libia,
09:31
Shadi took up scuba diving, and he seemed
to spend most of his time underwater.
to spend most of his time underwater.
189
559480
5120
Shadi comezou a facer mergullo
e seica pasaba a maior parte do tempo
baixo a auga.
baixo a auga.
09:37
He fell completely in love with the ocean,
190
565800
2000
Namorouse por completo do océano,
09:40
so when he finally decided
that he could no longer be in Libya,
that he could no longer be in Libya,
191
568680
3216
así que cando finalmente decidiu
que non podía estar máis en Libia,
que non podía estar máis en Libia,
09:43
late August 2014,
192
571920
2256
a finais de agosto de 2014,
09:46
he hoped to find work
as a diver when he reached Italy.
as a diver when he reached Italy.
193
574200
2880
esperaba atopar traballo como mergullador
ao chegar a Italia.
ao chegar a Italia.
09:50
Reality was not that easy.
194
578600
1840
A realidade non era tan sinxela.
09:53
We don't know much about his travels
195
581520
1816
Non sabemos moito sobre as súas viaxes
09:55
because he had a hard time
communicating with his family,
communicating with his family,
196
583360
2696
porque tiña complicado
comunicarse coa súa familia,
comunicarse coa súa familia,
09:58
but we do know that he struggled.
197
586080
2016
pero sabemos que lle costou.
10:00
And by the end of September,
198
588120
1376
E a finais de setembro,
10:01
he was living on the streets
somewhere in France.
somewhere in France.
199
589520
2286
vivía na rúa nalgún lugar de Francia.
10:04
On October 7, he calls
his cousin in Belgium,
his cousin in Belgium,
200
592840
3016
O 7 de outubro chama
ao seu curmán en Bélxica,
ao seu curmán en Bélxica,
10:07
and explains his situation.
201
595880
1976
e explícalle a situación.
10:09
He said, "I'm in Calais. I need you
to come get my backpack and my laptop.
to come get my backpack and my laptop.
202
597880
5176
Dixo: «Estou en Calais, necesito
que me collas a mochila e o ordenador.
que me collas a mochila e o ordenador.
10:15
I can't afford to pay the people smugglers
to help me with the crossing to Britain,
to help me with the crossing to Britain,
203
603080
3936
Non podo pagarlles aos traficantes
de persoas para cruzar ao Reino Unido,
de persoas para cruzar ao Reino Unido,
10:19
but I will go buy a wetsuit
and I will swim."
and I will swim."
204
607040
2240
pero mercarei
un traxe de neopreno e nadarei».
un traxe de neopreno e nadarei».
10:22
His cousin, of course,
tried to warn him not to,
tried to warn him not to,
205
610560
2456
O curmán, por suposto,
intentou dicirlle que non,
intentou dicirlle que non,
10:25
but Shadi's battery
on the phone went flat,
on the phone went flat,
206
613040
2136
pero o móbil de Shadi descargouse,
10:27
and his phone was never switched on again.
207
615200
2800
e nunca se volveu acender.
10:31
What was left of Shadi
was found nearly three months later,
was found nearly three months later,
208
619520
4056
O que quedou de Shadi
atopouse case tres meses despois,
atopouse case tres meses despois,
10:35
800 kilometers away
209
623600
1936
a 800 quilómetros
10:37
in a wetsuit on a beach in Norway.
210
625560
2040
nun neopreno nunha praia de Noruega.
10:40
He's still waiting
for his funeral in Norway,
for his funeral in Norway,
211
628560
2136
Aínda espera polo seu funeral en Noruega,
10:42
and none of his family
will be able to attend.
will be able to attend.
212
630720
2560
e ninguén da súa familia poderá asistir.
10:47
Many may think that the story
about Shadi and Mouaz
about Shadi and Mouaz
213
635080
2536
Moitos poden pensar
que a historia de Shadi e Mouaz
que a historia de Shadi e Mouaz
10:49
is a story about death,
214
637640
1800
é unha historia sobre a morte,
10:52
but I don't agree.
215
640800
1216
pero non estou de acordo.
10:54
To me, this is a story about two questions
that I think we all share:
that I think we all share:
216
642040
5456
Para min, é unha historia
sobre 2 cuestións que todos compartimos:
sobre 2 cuestións que todos compartimos:
10:59
what is a better life,
217
647520
1776
que é unha vida mellor
11:01
and what am I willing to do to achieve it?
218
649320
2320
e que estou disposto a facer
para conseguila?
para conseguila?
11:04
And to me, and probably a lot of you,
219
652760
1776
E para min e para moitos de vós
11:06
a better life would mean
220
654560
1576
unha vida mellor significaría
11:08
being able to do more
of what we think of as meaningful,
of what we think of as meaningful,
221
656160
2896
ser capaz de facer
máis cousas con significado,
máis cousas con significado,
11:11
whether that be spending more time
with your family and friends,
with your family and friends,
222
659080
3000
aínda que iso poida ser
pasar máis tempo coa familia e amigos,
pasar máis tempo coa familia e amigos,
11:14
travel to an exotic place,
223
662104
1512
viaxar a un lugar exótico,
11:15
or just getting money
to buy that cool new device
to buy that cool new device
224
663640
2336
ou gañar cartos para comprar
un novo aparello chulo
un novo aparello chulo
11:18
or a pair of new sneakers.
225
666000
1696
ou un par de tenis novos.
11:19
And this is all
within our reach pretty easily.
within our reach pretty easily.
226
667720
2720
E isto é doado de acadar para nós.
11:23
But if you are fleeing a war zone,
227
671840
1936
Mais se foxes dunha zona de guerra,
11:25
the answers to those two questions
are dramatically different.
are dramatically different.
228
673800
3976
as respostas a estas dúas cuestións
son terriblemente diferentes.
son terriblemente diferentes.
11:29
A better life is a life in safety.
229
677800
2256
Unha vida mellor é unha vida segura.
11:32
It's a life in dignity.
230
680080
2336
É unha vida digna.
11:34
A better life means
not having your house bombed,
not having your house bombed,
231
682440
2656
Unha vida mellor é
que non bombardeen a túa casa,
que non bombardeen a túa casa,
11:37
not fearing being kidnapped.
232
685120
1536
non ter medo de que te secuestren.
11:38
It means being able
to send your children to school,
to send your children to school,
233
686680
2429
Significa ser capaz
de levar os nenos á escola,
de levar os nenos á escola,
11:41
go to university,
234
689133
1163
ir á universidade,
11:42
or just find work to be able to provide
for yourself and the ones you love.
for yourself and the ones you love.
235
690320
4416
ou simplemente atopar traballo
e sustentarte a ti e aos teus.
e sustentarte a ti e aos teus.
11:46
A better life would be
a future of some possibilities
a future of some possibilities
236
694760
3616
Unha vida mellor sería
un futuro dalgunhas posibilidades
un futuro dalgunhas posibilidades
11:50
compared to nearly none,
237
698400
2296
comparado a case ningunha
11:52
and that's a strong motivation.
238
700720
1760
e iso é unha forte motivación.
11:55
And I have no trouble imagining
239
703480
2096
E podo imaxinar facilmente
11:57
that after spending weeks or even months
240
705600
3496
que despois de pasar semanas ou ata meses
12:01
as a second-grade citizen,
241
709120
1896
coma un cidadán de segunda,
12:03
living on the streets
or in a horrible makeshift camp
or in a horrible makeshift camp
242
711040
4136
vivindo nas rúas
ou nun campamento provisional horrible
ou nun campamento provisional horrible
12:07
with a stupid, racist name
like "The Jungle,"
like "The Jungle,"
243
715200
3456
cun nome estúpido e racista
como «a Xungla»
como «a Xungla»

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Anders Fjellberg - JournalistFor the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, Anders Fjellberg investigated the story of "The Wetsuitman," along with his co-author, photographer Tomm Christiansen.
Why you should listen
In June and July 2015, Norwegian journalist Anders Fjellberg published a harrowing two-part investigation in Magasinet, the weekend magazine of daily newspaper Dagbladet, published in Oslo. Co-authored with photographer Tomm Christiansen, “The Wetsuitman” traced the origin of two dead bodies washed ashore in Norway and the Netherlands wearing wetsuits, identifying them as Syrian asylum seekers who had seemingly tried the inconceivable: swimming their way into the United Kingdom from the beach of Calais, France. Fjellberg has been a reporter since 2010. “The Wetsuitman” has been reprinted in newspapers across Europe.
