is spreading Western culture
114
381679
2936
yang berkata, "Putrimu menyebarkan
budaya Barat
budaya Barat
06:36
in the honorable societies."
115
384615
1726
di tengah komunitas terhormat."
06:38
Our car was stoned at one point.
116
386341
2546
Mobil kami dirajam batu.
06:40
One day I went to the office
and found our metal signboard
and found our metal signboard
117
388887
3900
Ketika saya berangkat ke kantor
dan melihat palang besi kami
dan melihat palang besi kami
06:44
wrinkled and broken as if a lot of people
had been hitting it with something heavy.
had been hitting it with something heavy.
118
392787
4802
bengkok dan rusak seakan telah
dirajam dengan benda berat.
dirajam dengan benda berat.
06:49
Things got so bad that I had
to hide myself in many ways.
to hide myself in many ways.
119
397589
3627
Situasi bertambah buruk
sehingga saya harus bersembunyi.
sehingga saya harus bersembunyi.
06:53
I would put up the windows of the car,
120
401216
3077
Saya menutupi jendela mobil,
06:56
veil my face, not speak
while I was in public,
while I was in public,
121
404293
3932
menutupi muka saya,
tidak berbicara saat di depan umum,
tidak berbicara saat di depan umum,
07:00
but eventually situations got worse
when my life was threatened,
when my life was threatened,
122
408225
3977
namun situasi makin memburuk
ketika hidup saya mulai terancam.
ketika hidup saya mulai terancam.
07:04
and I had to leave, back to Karachi,
and our actions stopped.
and our actions stopped.
123
412202
4566
dan saya harus kembali ke Karachi,
dan semua kegiatan kami dihentikan.
dan semua kegiatan kami dihentikan.
07:09
Back in Karachi, as an 18-year-old,
124
417962
3373
Di Karachi, sebagai gadis
berusia 18 tahun,
berusia 18 tahun,
07:13
I thought this was the biggest
failure of my entire life.
failure of my entire life.
125
421335
4766
saya merasa inilah
kegagalan terbesar saya.
kegagalan terbesar saya.
07:18
I was devastated.
126
426101
1910
Saya merasa terpukul.
07:20
As a teenager, I was blaming
myself for everything that happened.
myself for everything that happened.
127
428011
3645
Sebagai orang muda, saya merasa bersalah
atas apa telah yang terjadi.
atas apa telah yang terjadi.
07:23
And it turns out,
when we started reflecting,
when we started reflecting,
128
431656
2136
Dan ketika kami mulai introspeksi diri,
07:25
we did realize that it was actually
me and my team's fault.
me and my team's fault.
129
433792
5874
kami menyadari bahwa
memang kamilah yang bersalah.
memang kamilah yang bersalah.
07:31
There were two big reasons
why our campaign had failed big time.
why our campaign had failed big time.
130
439666
5155
Ada dua alasan utama
mengapa kampanye kami gagal total.
mengapa kampanye kami gagal total.
07:36
One of those, the first reason,
131
444821
2250
Salah satunya, alasan pertama,
07:39
is we were standing
against core values of people.
against core values of people.
132
447071
2629
adalah bahwa kami menentang
nilai-nilai inti masyarakat.
nilai-nilai inti masyarakat.
07:42
We were saying no to something
that was very important to them,
that was very important to them,
133
450900
3512
Kami menentang sesuatu yang merupakan
hal paling penting bagi mereka,
hal paling penting bagi mereka,
07:46
challenging their code of honor,
134
454412
2347
menantang kode kehormatan mereka,
07:48
and hurting them deeply in the process.
135
456759
2267
dan melukai mereka dalam hal ini.
07:51
And number two, which was very
important for me to learn,
important for me to learn,
136
459026
2699
Dan alasan kedua yang sangat penting
dalam pembelajaran,
dalam pembelajaran,
07:53
and amazing, and surprising
for me to learn,
for me to learn,
137
461725
2205
mengesankan dan mengejutkan
untuk dipelajari,
untuk dipelajari,
07:55
was that we were not including
the true heroes
the true heroes
138
463930
3181
adalah bahwa kami tidak mengikutsertkan
para pahlawan sejati
para pahlawan sejati
07:59
who should be fighting for themselves.
139
467111
2206
yang seharusnya mereka
terlibat langsung.
terlibat langsung.
08:01
The women in the villages had no idea
we were fighting for them in the streets.
we were fighting for them in the streets.
140
469317
3957
Para wanita di desa tidak tahu kami
berkampanye untuk mereka.
berkampanye untuk mereka.
08:05
Every time I would go back,
141
473274
1437
Setiap kali saya kembali,
08:06
I would find my cousins and friends
with scarves on their faces,
with scarves on their faces,
142
474711
3007
saya mendapati sepupu dan
teman dengan luka di wajah mereka,
teman dengan luka di wajah mereka,
08:09
and I would ask, "What happened?"
143
477718
1794
dan saya bertanya,
"Apa yang terjadi?"
"Apa yang terjadi?"
08:11
And they'd be like,
"Our husbands beat us."
"Our husbands beat us."
144
479512
2390
Dan jawab mereka,
"Suami kami memukul kami."
"Suami kami memukul kami."
08:13
But we are working in the streets for you!
145
481902
2879
Tapi kami berkampanye untuk dirimu!
08:16
We are changing the policies.
146
484781
1602
Kami berusaha merubah kebijakan.
08:18
How is that not impacting their life?
147
486383
2972
Mengapa hidup mereka tidak terpengaruhi?
08:21
So then we found out something
which was very amazing for us.
which was very amazing for us.
148
489355
4851
Akhirnya kami menemukan sesuatu
yang sangat mengejutkan.
yang sangat mengejutkan.
08:26
The policies of a country
149
494206
2650
Kebijakan negara
08:28
do not necessarily always affect
the tribal and rural communities.
the tribal and rural communities.
150
496856
4611
tidak selalu mempengaruhi suku dan
penduduknya secara langsung.
penduduknya secara langsung.
08:33
It was devastating -- like, oh,
we can't actually do something about this?
we can't actually do something about this?
151
501467
4304
Sangat menyedihkan -- Tidakkah kami dapat
berbuat sesuatu dalam hal ini?
berbuat sesuatu dalam hal ini?
08:37
And we found out there's a huge gap
152
505771
3042
Dan kami baru menyadari bahwa
ada kesenjangan yang besar
ada kesenjangan yang besar
08:40
when it comes to official policies
and the real truth on the ground.
and the real truth on the ground.
153
508813
3836
antara kebijakan resmi dan
kenyataannya di lapangan.
kenyataannya di lapangan.
08:44
So this time, we were like,
we are going to do something different.
we are going to do something different.
154
512649
3312
Maka kali ini, kami akan melakukan
sesuatu yang berbeda.
sesuatu yang berbeda.
08:47
We are going to use strategy,
155
515961
1749
Kami akan menggunakan strategi,
08:49
and we are going to go back and apologize.
156
517710
2989
dan kami akan kembali dan meminta maaf.
08:52
Yes, apologize.
157
520699
1651
Ya, meminta maaf.
08:54
We went back to the communities
158
522350
1513
Kami kembali ke komunitas kami
08:55
and we said we are
very ashamed of what we did.
very ashamed of what we did.
159
523863
3248
dan meminta maaf atas
perbuatan kami yang memalukan.
perbuatan kami yang memalukan.
08:59
We are here to apologize, and in fact,
we are here to make it up to you.
we are here to make it up to you.
160
527111
4570
Kami ingin meminta maaf dan kami
justru ingin membantu kalian.
justru ingin membantu kalian.
09:03
How do we do that?
161
531681
1570
Bagaimana caranya?
09:05
We are going to promote
three of your main cultures.
three of your main cultures.
162
533251
2966
Kami akan mengkampanyekan
tiga elemen dari budaya kalian,
tiga elemen dari budaya kalian,
09:08
We know that it's music,
language, and embroidery.
language, and embroidery.
163
536217
3582
yaitu musik, bahasa, dan sulaman.
09:11
Nobody believed us.
164
539799
1526
Tak seorang pun percaya.
09:13
Nobody wanted to work with us.
165
541325
2738
Tak seorangpun ingin bekerja sama
dengan kami.
dengan kami.
09:16
It took a lot of convincing
and discussions with these communities
and discussions with these communities
166
544063
3555
Butuh waktu lama untuk
meyakinkan mereka dan berdiskusi
meyakinkan mereka dan berdiskusi
09:19
until they agreed that we are going
to promote their language
to promote their language
167
547618
3692
alhasil kami diperbolehkan
mempromosikan bahasa mereka
mempromosikan bahasa mereka
09:23
by making a booklet of their stories,
fables and old tales in the tribe,
fables and old tales in the tribe,
168
551310
4662
melalui buklet berisi kisah,
fabel dan cerita rakyat mereka,
fabel dan cerita rakyat mereka,
09:27
and we would promote their music
169
555972
2572
dan kami juga
mempromosikan musik mereka
mempromosikan musik mereka
09:30
by making a CD of the songs
from the tribe, and some drumbeating.
from the tribe, and some drumbeating.
170
558544
5511
dengan mengedarkan CD
lagu-lagu daerah dan tabuhan drum.
lagu-lagu daerah dan tabuhan drum.
09:36
And the third, which was my favorite,
171
564055
2161
Dan yang ketiga,
yang merupakan favorit saya,
yang merupakan favorit saya,
09:38
was we would promote their embroidery
by making a center in the village
by making a center in the village
172
566216
4011
adalah kampanye kami akan sulaman mereka
dengan mendirikan suatu senter didesa.
dengan mendirikan suatu senter didesa.
09:42
where women would come every day
to make embroidery.
to make embroidery.
173
570227
3135
dimana para wanita datang
setiap hari untuk menyulam.
setiap hari untuk menyulam.
09:46
And so it began.
174
574064
1974
Dan saat itulah
proyek kami dimulai.
proyek kami dimulai.
09:48
We worked with one village,
and we started our first center.
and we started our first center.
175
576038
4002
Kami melakukannya di suatu desa
yang merupakan senter pertama kami.
yang merupakan senter pertama kami.
09:52
It was a beautiful day.
176
580770
1498
Hari itu terasa indah.
09:54
We started the center.
177
582268
1104
Senter itu dimulai.
Para wanita datang untuk menyulam.
09:55
Women were coming to make embroidery,
178
583372
2069
09:57
and going through a life-changing
process of education,
process of education,
179
585441
3744
dan memulai proses pendidikan
yang mengubah hidup mereka,
yang mengubah hidup mereka,
10:01
learning about their rights,
what Islam says about their rights,
what Islam says about their rights,
180
589185
3050
belajar akan hak-hak mereka,
dari sudut pandang Islam,
dari sudut pandang Islam,
10:04
and enterprise development,
how they can create money,
how they can create money,
181
592235
2819
belajar mengembangkan usaha,
dan menciptakan nafkah,
dan menciptakan nafkah,
10:07
and then how they can create
money from money,
money from money,
182
595054
2252
bagaimana cara menciptakan
nafkah dari penghasilan tersebut,
nafkah dari penghasilan tersebut,
10:09
how they can fight the customs
that have been destroying their lives
that have been destroying their lives
183
597306
3878
bagaimana melawan tradisi yang telah
menghancurkan hidup mereka
menghancurkan hidup mereka
10:13
from so many centuries,
184
601184
1718
selama berabad-abad,
10:14
because in Islam, in reality,
185
602902
1856
karena kenyataannya,
dalam agama Islam,
dalam agama Islam,
10:16
women are supposed to be
shoulder to shoulder with men.
shoulder to shoulder with men.
186
604758
3615
wanita seharusnya berjalan
berdampingan bersama pria.
berdampingan bersama pria.
10:20
Women have so much status
that we have not been hearing,
that we have not been hearing,
187
608373
3752
Banyak sekali peran wanita
yang tidak pernah kami ketahui
yang tidak pernah kami ketahui
10:24
that they have not been hearing,
188
612125
1813
yang tidak pernah mereka ketahui
10:25
and we needed to tell them
that they need to know
that they need to know
189
613938
3018
dan kami perlu memberitahu
mereka agar mereka tahu
mereka agar mereka tahu
10:28
where their rights are
and how to take them by themselves,
and how to take them by themselves,
190
616956
2740
akan hak mereka dan bagaimana
cara mendapatkannya sendiri,
cara mendapatkannya sendiri,
10:31
because they can do it and we can't.
191
619696
2325
karena mereka mampu dan
kami tidak.
kami tidak.
10:34
So this was the model which actually
came out -- very amazing.
came out -- very amazing.
192
622021
2972
Cara ini menjadi model yang
dipraktekan -- luar biasa.
dipraktekan -- luar biasa.
10:36
Through embroidery
we were promoting their traditions.
we were promoting their traditions.
193
624993
2533
Melalui sulaman kami
mempromosikan tradisi mereka.
mempromosikan tradisi mereka.
10:39
We went into the village.
We would mobilize the community.
We would mobilize the community.
194
627526
2711
Kami mengunjungi desa-desa untuk
menggerakkan komunitas.
menggerakkan komunitas.
10:42
We would make a center inside
where 30 women will come
where 30 women will come
195
630237
3020
Kami mendirikan senter
dimana 30 wanita akan datang
dimana 30 wanita akan datang
10:45
for six months to learn about
value addition of traditional embroidery,
value addition of traditional embroidery,
196
633257
4108
mempelajari nilai-nilai sulaman
tradisional selama 6 bulan,
tradisional selama 6 bulan,
10:49
enterprise development,
life skills and basic education,
life skills and basic education,
197
637365
3739
cara mengembangkan usaha,
ketrampilan dan pendidikan dasar,
ketrampilan dan pendidikan dasar,
10:53
and about their rights
and how to say no to those customs
and how to say no to those customs
198
641104
3111
dan tentang hak-hak mereka
dan cara memerangi tradisi tersebut
dan cara memerangi tradisi tersebut
10:56
and how to stand as leaders
for themselves and the society.
for themselves and the society.
199
644215
3671
dan cara memimpin untuk
diri sendiri dan komunitas mereka.
diri sendiri dan komunitas mereka.
10:59
After six months, we would connect
these women to loans and to markets
these women to loans and to markets
200
647886
4812
Setelah 6 bulan, kami memperkenalkan
mereka kepada kreditor dan pasar
mereka kepada kreditor dan pasar
11:04
where they can become
local entrepreneurs in their communities.
local entrepreneurs in their communities.
201
652698
3910
dimana mereka dapat menjadi
pengusaha lokal dikomunitasnya.
pengusaha lokal dikomunitasnya.
11:08
We soon called this project Sughar.
202
656608
3257
Kami namakan proyek ini Sughar.
11:11
Sughar is a local word used
in many, many languages in Pakistan.
in many, many languages in Pakistan.
203
659865
4040
Sughar adalah kata umum yang
digunakan dalam banyak bahasa di Pakistan.
digunakan dalam banyak bahasa di Pakistan.
11:15
It means skilled and confident women.
204
663905
3436
Kata itu berarti wanita yang trampil
dan percaya diri.
dan percaya diri.
11:19
I truly believe, to create women leaders,
there's only one thing you have to do:
there's only one thing you have to do:
205
667341
5108
Saya percaya untuk menciptakan
pemimpin wanita, dibutuhan hanya 1 hal:
pemimpin wanita, dibutuhan hanya 1 hal:
11:24
Just let them know that they have
what it takes to be a leader.
what it takes to be a leader.
206
672449
4182
Beritahukan kepada mereka bahwa
mereka punya kemampuan untuk memimpin.
mereka punya kemampuan untuk memimpin.
11:28
These women you see here,
207
676631
1499
Para wanita ini,
11:30
they have strong skills
and potential to be leaders.
and potential to be leaders.
208
678130
4443
memiliki ketrampilan yang cakap
dan potensi untuk menjadi pemimpin.
dan potensi untuk menjadi pemimpin.
11:34
All we had to do was remove
the barriers that surrounded them,
the barriers that surrounded them,
209
682573
3042
Kita hanya perlu menyingkirkan
halangan yang mengelilingi mereka,
halangan yang mengelilingi mereka,
11:37
and that's what we decided to do.
210
685615
2539
dan itulah yang kami putuskan
untuk membantu mereka.
untuk membantu mereka.
11:40
But then while we were thinking
everything was going well,
everything was going well,
211
688154
3289
Tapi kemudian ketika kami berpikir
bahwa semuanya berjalan lancar,
bahwa semuanya berjalan lancar,
11:43
once again everything was fantastic,
212
691443
2600
lagi-lagi semuanya terasa fantastis,
11:46
we found our next setback:
213
694043
2067
kami mengalami kemunduran:
11:48
A lot of men started seeing
the visible changes in their wife.
the visible changes in their wife.
214
696110
3169
Banyak pria mulai mendapati
perubahan dalam diri istri mereka,
perubahan dalam diri istri mereka,
11:51
She's speaking more,
she's making decisions --
she's making decisions --
215
699279
2141
Mereka mulai bersuara dan
membuat keputusan --
membuat keputusan --
11:53
oh my gosh, she's handling
everything in the house.
everything in the house.
216
701420
2689
Ya ampun,
mereka melakukannya di rumah.
mereka melakukannya di rumah.
11:56
They stopped them
from coming to the centers,
from coming to the centers,
217
704109
4469
Para suami ini melarang
istri mereka datang ke senter,
istri mereka datang ke senter,
12:00
and this time, we were like,
okay, time for strategy two.
okay, time for strategy two.
218
708578
4044
dan kali ini, kami berpikir untuk
menjalankan strategi nomor dua.
menjalankan strategi nomor dua.
12:04
We went to the fashion
industry in Pakistan
industry in Pakistan
219
712622
2088
Kami menengok
industri fashion di Pakistan
industri fashion di Pakistan
12:06
and decided to do research
about what happens there.
about what happens there.
220
714710
3783
dan mencari tahu apa
yang sedang berlangsung di sana.
yang sedang berlangsung di sana.
12:10
Turns out the fashion industry in Pakistan
is very strong and growing day by day,
is very strong and growing day by day,
221
718493
4987
Ternyata industri fashion di Pakistan
semakin makmur kian hari,
semakin makmur kian hari,
12:15
but there is less contribution
from the tribal areas
from the tribal areas
222
723480
3566
namun kontribusi dari
suku didaerah ternyata menurun
suku didaerah ternyata menurun
12:19
and to the tribal areas, especially women.
223
727046
3075
dan juga untuk
suku-suku tersebut terutama wanita.
suku-suku tersebut terutama wanita.
12:22
So we decided to launch our first ever
tribal women's very own fashion brand,
tribal women's very own fashion brand,
224
730121
4434
Maka kami menciptakan merek fashion
bagi para wanita suku tersebut,
bagi para wanita suku tersebut,
12:26
which is now called Nomads.
225
734555
2630
yang dinamakan Nomads.
12:30
And so women started earning more,
226
738085
2182
Dan mereka pun mendapat
penghasilan tambahan,
penghasilan tambahan,
12:32
they started contributing more
financially to the house,
financially to the house,
227
740267
2806
mereka mulai memberikan
kontribusi lebih untuk rumah tangga,
kontribusi lebih untuk rumah tangga,
12:35
and men had to think again
before saying no to them
before saying no to them
228
743073
3231
Para pria kembali berpikir ulang
sebelum melarang istri mereka
sebelum melarang istri mereka
12:38
when they were coming to the centers.
229
746304
2059
saat istri mereka datang
ke tempat kami.
ke tempat kami.
12:43
(Applause)
230
751343
2763
(Tepuk tangan)
12:46
Thank you, thank you.
231
754106
2159
Terima kasih, terima kasih.
12:48
In 2013, we launched our first
Sughar Hub instead of a center.
Sughar Hub instead of a center.
232
756265
5177
Tahun 2013, kami membuka Sughar Hub
pertama, bukan sebuah senter.
pertama, bukan sebuah senter.
12:53

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Khalida Brohi - Women’s rights activist and entrepreneurIn the tribal region where she was born, Khalida Brohi founded an organization to end honor killings and empower Pakistani women.
Why you should listen
When she was a teenager in the Balochistan region of Pakistan, Khalida Brohi witnessed the honor killing of her friend, who had married for love. Today, she's the founder and executive director of the Sughar Empowerment Society. The nonprofit, whose name means "skilled and confident woman", provides Pakistani tribal women with the education, skills, and income opportunities to empower them to take a leadership role in their households, their communities, and the world.
As she works to reduce endemic violence against women at substantial personal risk, she says, "Not doing this work would kill me. Doing this work would keep me alive.”
