ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Timothy Prestero - Designer
Timothy Prestero loves a flashy "concept car." But in his own work, he aims to design products for social impact, keeping users in mind.

Why you should listen

Timothy Prestero is the founder and CEO of Design that Matters, a nonprofit that collaborates with social entrepreneurs and volunteers to design products for the poor in developing countries. A former Peace Corps volunteer and MIT graduate, Tim has worked in West Africa, Latin America and Asia. He is a Martin Fellow at the MIT Laboratory for Energy and the Environment, a Draper Richards Kaplan Fellow, and was named an Ashoka Affiliate in 2004. His awards include the 2007 Social Venture Network Innovation Award, and the 2009 World Technology Award. This year, Design That Matters was named the winner of the National Design Award in Corporate and Institutional Achievement.

Tim and his team made a splash when they created the NeoNurture Infant Incubator, named one of TIME Magazine's "50 Best Inventions of 2010." However, the product wasn't a hit with manufacturers or with hospitals in developing countries and forever remained a prototype. Design That Matters learned an important lesson from the experience -- that good design must keep in mind who will procure equipment, who will be using it, as well as the myriad ways it could be used incorrectly. As Timothy says, "There's no such thing as a dumb user; there are only dumb products.

(Registrato a TEDxBoston).

I'm going to startinizio with an exampleesempio from some work that we did on newbornneonato healthSalute.
18
45698
4117
01:05
So here'secco a problemproblema:

1984
Ecco il problema:
01:07
FourQuattro millionmilione babiesbambini around the worldmondo,
20
51799
2534
4 milioni di bambini nel mondo,
01:10

01:16
It turnsgiri out halfmetà of those kidsbambini, or about 1.8 millionmilione newbornsneonati around the worldmondo,
24
60350
3479
01:19
would make it if you could just keep them warmcaldo
25
63829
2636
01:22

Tutti questi bambini nelle coperte dovrebbero stare in incubatrice --
01:32

01:38
This is what we want.
31

Questo è quello che vogliamo.
01:41
ProbablyProbabilmente what happenedè accaduto is a hospitalospedale in JapanGiappone upgradedAggiornato theirloro equipmentattrezzatura

33

01:47
The problemproblema is, withoutsenza technicianstecnici, withoutsenza sparescorta partsparti,
34
91532
3683
01:51
donationsdonazioni like this very quicklyvelocemente turnturno into junkgiunca.
35
95215
3605
01:54
So this seemedsembrava like a problemproblema that we could do something about.
36
98820
3060
01:57
KeepingMantenendo a babybambino warmcaldo for a weeksettimana,

02:00
that's not rocketrazzo sciencescienza.
38
104380
2000
non è poi così difficile.
02:02
So we got startediniziato.
39
106380
1783
Così abbiamo iniziato
02:04
We partneredha collaborato with a leadingprincipale medicalmedico researchricerca institutionistituzione here in BostonBoston.
40

3118
02:07
We conductedcondotto monthsmesi of userutente researchricerca overseasall'estero,
41

Abbiamo portato avanti mesi di ricerche oltreoceano,
02:10
tryingprovare to think like designersprogettisti, human-centeredumano-centrato designdesign.
42
114998
2634
cercando di pensare come designer, designer concentrati sull'uomo
02:13
Let's figurefigura out what people want.
43
117632
2943
Cerchiamo di capire cosa vuole la gente.
02:16
We killeducciso thousandsmigliaia of Post-itPost-it notesgli appunti.
44
120575
1954
Abbiamo strappato migliaia di Post-it.
02:18
We madefatto dozensdozzine of prototypesprototipi to get to this.
45
122529
2933
02:21
So this is the NeoNurtureNeoNurture InfantInfante IncubatorIncubatrice,
46
125462
3217
l'incubatrice per neonati "NeoNurture",
02:24
and this has a lot of smartsSmarts builtcostruito into it. And we feltprovato great.
47
128679
4150
Eravamo molto soddisfatti.
02:28
So the ideaidea here is, unlikea differenza di the conceptconcetto carauto,
48
132829
2200
02:30
we want to marrysposare something beautifulbellissimo
49
135029
2016
di sposare qualcosa di bello
02:32
with something that actuallyin realtà workslavori.
50
137045
2201
con qualcosa che funzioni veramente.
02:35
And our ideaidea is that this designdesign
51
139246
1916
02:37
would inspireispirare manufacturersproduttori and other people of influenceinfluenza
52
141162
3984
possa ispirare produttori e altre persone influenti
02:41
to take this modelmodello and runcorrere with it.
53
145146
2533
a prendere il modello e produrlo.
02:43
Here'sQui è the badcattivo newsnotizia:
54
147679
3518
Ma ecco la cattiva notizia:
02:47
The only babybambino ever actuallyin realtà put insidedentro the NeoNurtureNeoNurture IncubatorIncubatrice
55
151197
3348
02:50
was this kidragazzo duringdurante a Time magazinerivista photofoto shootsparare.
56
154545
3917
è questo bambino fotografato dalla rivista Time.
02:54
So recognitionriconoscimento is fantasticfantastico.
57
158462
2432
Il riconoscimento è fantastico.
02:56
We want designdesign to get out for people to see it.
58
160894
3100
02:59
It wonha vinto lots of awardspremi.
59
163994
1234
Ha vinto tantissimi premi.
03:01
But it feltprovato like a boobyBooby prizepremio.
60
165228
2048
Ma erano premi di consolazione.
03:03
We wanted to make beautifulbellissimo things that are going to make the worldmondo a better placeposto,
61
167276
6515
03:09
and I don't think this kidragazzo was even in it long enoughabbastanza to get warmcaldo.
62
173791
3377
03:13
So it turnsgiri out that designdesign for inspirationispirazione
63
177168
2899
03:15
doesn't really --
64
180067
2518
non lo fa --
03:18
I guessindovina what I would say is, for us, for what I want to do,
65
182585
3549
03:22
it's eithero too slowlento or it just doesn't work, it's ineffectiveinefficace.
66
186134
4050
è troppo lento o semplicemente non funziona, è inefficace.
03:26
So really I want to designdesign for outcomesrisultati.
67
190184
2800
Quindi voglio progettare per un risultato.
03:28
I don't want to make beautifulbellissimo stuffcose.
68
192984
1500
Non voglio fare cose belle.
03:30
I want to make the worldmondo a better placeposto.
69
194484
1734
Voglio rendere il mondo un posto migliore.
03:32
So when we were designingprogettazione NeoNurtureNeoNurture,
70
196218
2350
Quando progettavamo NeoNurture,
03:34
we paidpagato a lot of attentionAttenzione to the people who are going to use this thing --
71
198568
2923
03:37
for exampleesempio, poorpovero familiesfamiglie, ruralrurale doctorsmedici,

03:43
We thought we had all our basesbasi coveredcoperto, we'dsaremmo donefatto everything right.
74
207701
2649
03:46
Well it turnsgiri out there's this wholetotale constellationcostellazione of people
75
210350
2950
03:49
who have to be involvedcoinvolti in a productprodotto for it to be successfulriuscito:
76
213300
3100

04:01
And I have to askChiedere the questiondomanda --
80
225880
2184
E devo fare una domanda --
04:03
VC'sDi VC always askChiedere, "SirSir, what is your businessattività commerciale, and who is your customercliente?"
81
228064
3021
04:06
Who is our customercliente? Well here'secco an exampleesempio.
82
231098
3022
Chi è il nostro cliente? Ecco un esempio.
04:10
This is a BangladeshiBangladeshi hospitalospedale directordirettore outsideal di fuori his facilityservizio, struttura.
83

04:13
It turnsgiri out he doesn't buyacquistare any of his equipmentattrezzatura.
84

Pare che non acquisti nessuna attrezzatura.
04:15
Those decisionsdecisioni are madefatto by the MinistryMinistero of HealthSalute

04:20
and it just kindgenere of showsSpettacoli up.

04:21
SimilarlyAllo stesso modo, here'secco a multinationalmultinazionale medicalmedico devicedispositivo manufacturerfabbricante.

04:25
It turnsgiri out they'veessi hanno got to fishpesce where the fishpesce are.
89
249315
2766
04:27
So it turnsgiri out that in emergingemergente marketsmercati, where the fishpesce are,
90
252081
3633
04:31
are the emergingemergente middlein mezzo classclasse of these countriespaesi --
91

3201

92
258915

04:38
So it turnsgiri out that designdesign for outcomesrisultati in one aspectaspetto
93
262416
4832
04:43
really meanssi intende thinkingpensiero about designdesign for manufactureproduzione and distributiondistribuzione.
94
267248
3117
04:46
Okay, that was an importantimportante lessonlezione.
95
270365
1883
Ok, quella è stata una lezione importante.
04:48
SecondSecondo, we tookha preso that lessonlezione and triedprovato to pushspingere it into our nextIl prossimo projectprogetto.
96
272248
4883
04:53
So we startediniziato by findingscoperta a manufacturerfabbricante,
97
277131
2599
04:55
an organizationorganizzazione calledchiamato MTTSMTT in VietnamVietnam,

L'altro nostro partner è East Meets West.
05:02
This is an AmericanAmericano foundationfondazione that distributesdistribuisce that technologytecnologia
101

05:05
to poorpovero hospitalsospedali around that regionregione.
102
289847
2667
negli ospedali poveri della zona.
05:08
So we startediniziato with them sayingdetto, "Well what do you want?
103
292514
2769
Abbiamo cominciato dicendo loro, "Voi cosa volete?
05:11
What's a problemproblema you want to solverisolvere?"
104
295283
1465
Qual è un problema che volete risolvere?"
05:12
And they said, "Well let's work on newbornneonato jaundiceittero."
105
296748
2432
05:15
So this is anotherun altro one of these mind-bogglingda capogiro globalglobale problemsi problemi.
106
299180
3437
Questo è un altro grosso problema globale.
05:18
So jaundiceittero affectscolpisce two-thirdsdue terzi of newbornsneonati around the worldmondo.
107
302617
4164
05:22
Of those newbornsneonati, one in 10 roughlyapprossimativamente,
108
306781

In questi neonati, in circa 1 caso su 10,
05:27
if it's not treatedtrattati, the jaundiceittero getsprende so severegrave

05:33

111
317293

05:35
There's one way to treattrattare jaundiceittero,
112
319177
2334
05:37
and that's what's calledchiamato an exchangescambio transfusiontrasfusione.
113
321511
2549
05:39
So as you can imagineimmaginare, that's expensivecostoso and a little bitpo dangerouspericoloso.
114
324060
3336
Come potete immaginare, è costosa e anche abbastanza pericolosa.
05:43
There is anotherun altro curecura.
115
327396
2364
C'è un'altra cura.
05:45
It's very technologicaltecnologico, it's very complexcomplesso, a little dauntingscoraggiante.
116
329760
5400

08:21
So this is the FireflyLucciola PhototherapyFototerapia DeviceDispositivo,

08:26
So from the very beginninginizio we startediniziato by talkingparlando to manufacturersproduttori.

08:42
So that's the designdesign for manufactureproduzione questiondomanda.
182
506918
3102
Questo è il design adatto alla produzione.
08:45
When we think about actualeffettivo use,

08:47
you'llpotrai noticeAvviso that FireflyLucciola has a singlesingolo bassinetculla.

185
513768

08:51
And the ideaidea here is it's obviousevidente how you oughtdovere to use this devicedispositivo.
186
515834
4333
E l'idea qui è che l'uso corretto diventi ovvio.
08:56
If you try to put more than one kidragazzo in,
187
520167
1518
08:57
you're stackingaccatastamento them on topsuperiore of eachogni other.

09:00
So the ideaidea here is we say, you want to make it harddifficile to use wrongsbagliato.
190
524354
4214
L'idea è di rendere difficile l'uso scorretto.
09:04
In other wordsparole, you want to make the right way to use it
191
528568
1983
09:06
the easiestpiù semplice way to use it.
192
530551
2468
sia il modo più facile.
09:08
AnotherUn altro exampleesempio: Again, sillysciocco mommamma.
193
533019
2932
09:11
SillySciocco mommamma thinkspensa her babybambino lookssembra coldfreddo, wants to put a blanketcoperta over the babybambino.
194
535951

09:14
Well that's why we have lightsluci abovesopra and belowsotto the babybambino in FireflyLucciola.
195
538951
3067
09:17
So if mommamma does put a blanketcoperta over the babybambino,
196
542018
2084
Così se la mamma mette una coperta,
09:20
it's still receivingricevente effectiveefficace phototherapyfototerapia from belowsotto.
197
544102
3184
