bezocht ik als toerist
as a tourist,
for the very first time,
voor de allereerste keer.
van het bos me het meest troffen.
of the forest that struck me the most.
een gewone neushoornvogel
a rhinoceros hornbill.
over grote afstand.
over a great distance.
was een gibbonreservaat.
was in fact a gibbon reserve,
was coming out of the forest that time
dat toen uit het oerwoud kwam,
had actually noticed it.
rehabiliteren ze gibbons,
rehabilitating gibbons,
to spend a lot of their time
tegen illegale houtkap.
that takes place on the side.
the insects, and the rest,
de insecten en de rest weg,
in recordings you heard,
op de achtergrond in de opnames
at great distance.
op grote afstand.
die postten in dit reservaat
who were posted around this sanctuary
to guard against illegal logging,
tegen illegale houtkap.
als toeristen, het bos in.
again as tourists, out into the forest,
die een boom aan het kappen was,
who was just sawing a tree down,
from the ranger station.
to hear the chainsaws,
het regenwoud erg luidruchtig is.
the forest is very, very loud.
dat in deze moderne tijd,
that in this modern time,
from a ranger station in a sanctuary,
vanaf de rangerbasis, in een reservaat,
someone who has a chainsaw gets fired up.
een kettingzaag start.
maar het was echt waar.
but in fact, it was quite true.
always to come up with a high-tech,
waanzinnige hightech-oplossingen,
it has to be scalable,
while were there was that
waarmee we het konden stoppen,
that would allow us to stop this
already in the forest?
dedicated, three full-time guards,
fulltime opzichters,
in het bos gaande was.
what was happening out in the forest.
out in the forest.
way out in the middle of nowhere.
from the nearest road,
vanaf de dichtstbijzijnde weg.
but they had very good cell phone service,
maar wel gsm-dekking.
were on Facebook all the time,
that in fact it would be possible
of het mogelijk was
met een app op te pikken,
of chainsaws programmatically,
to go up in the trees.
in de bomen hebben.
dat bosgeluiden beluistert,
to listen to the sounds of the forest,
network that's there,
voor het probleem kunnen zijn.
to this issue for them.
to talk about saving the rainforest,
over het redden van het regenwoud,
definitely all heard about forever.
horen al over het regenwoud redden
have heard about saving the rainforest
has never changed:
heel belangrijk,
it's super urgent,
zijn gisteren verwoest.
have been destroyed yesterday.
van het regenwoud over is,
about half of the rainforest remains,
problems like climate change.
zoals klimaatverandering.
heb ik me echter nooit gerealiseerd:
that I didn't realize at the time:
for more greenhouse gas
auto's en vrachtauto's en schepen samen.
trains, cars, trucks and ships combined.
van klimaatverandering.
to climate change.
in het regenwoud illegaal,
that takes place in the rainforest
like the illegal logging that we saw.
enforce the rules that are there,
kunnen helpen de regels te handhaven,
van die 17% afhalen,
into this 17 percent
in the short term.
zijn om klimaatverandering tegen te gaan.
fastest way to fight climate change.
in het bos te horen is,
is heard in the forest,
of the chainsaw,
dat al aanwezig is,
GSM network that's already there
om het kappen te stoppen.
and stop the logging.
and finding a tree that's been cut.
het zoeken van een gekapte boom.
a tree from a satellite
met een satelliet,
en snelste manier was,
and fastest way to do it,
they weren't able to do it,
zoals je net zag.
gsm's zouden zijn,
were actually cell phones,
met honderden miljoenen weggegooid.
by the hundreds of millions every year,
which of course we should do,
wat wel zou moeten.
to the sounds of the forest.
that you see here,
engineering challenges
onder een bladerdak,
under a tree canopy,
onder een bladerdak,
under a tree canopy,
zonnepaneelontwerp,
solar panel design that you see here,
bijproducten uit de industrie.
byproducts of an industrial process.
for allowing me to do that.
this is a device up in a tree.
is that they are pretty well obscured
they are able to hear chainsaw noises
tot op een kilometer afstand,
kunt controleren,
about three square kilometers,
is het gebied onbeschermd.
it would make the area unprotected.
we took it back to Indonesia,
ging het mee terug naar Indonesië.
by illegal logging.
werden zaaggeluiden opgepikt.
illegal chainsaw noises.
Everyone had just gotten back down.
en iedereen was net beneden.
iedereen werd stil.
and they all quiet down,
until that moment.
om de houtkappers te laten stoppen.
to actually stop these loggers.
op de plek waar de houtkappers waren.
arrived close to where the loggers are.
waarop ik spijt krijg
where I'm actually regretting
the other side of this hill.
aan de andere kant is.
dus ik moest wel.
been interrupted before --
event for them,
hoorden we.
they have not been back since.
the entire operation works,
on the spot was that
en de mensen stopt,
in real time and stop people,
they won't come back.
en ze komen niet meer terug.
because we told a lot of people,
omdat we het veel mensen vertelden,
amazing stuff started to happen.
gingen ons mailen en bellen.
started to send us emails, phone calls.
throughout Asia,
people throughout South America,
ook wel konden gebruiken,
we thought might be exceptional,
dat het niet bijzonder was,
pretty good cell phone service.
goede ontvangst hebt met je gsm.
die het kwetsbaarst zijn.
of the forests that are most under threat.
really amazing happened,
their own old cell phones.
mensen die er al zijn,
people who are already there,
and use the existing connectivity,
kunnen verbeteren.
die opgestuurd worden
that are being sent to us
tweede leven willen geven.
something else in their afterlife,
ook wordt hergebruikt,
can be completely recycled,
compleet opgewaardeerd is.
an entirely upcycled device.
met iets hightechs.
because of any sort of high-tech solution.
what's already there,
los van gsm's,
that if it's not phones,
going to be enough there
in een nieuwe context.
in new contexts.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Topher White - Conservation technologistThrough his startup Rainforest Connection, Topher White transforms used cell phones into guardians of the rainforest.
Why you should listen
In 2012, Topher White founded Rainforest Connection, a startup which converts recycled cell-phones into solar-powered listening devices to monitor and protect remote areas of the rainforest. Now an established NGO, Rainforest Connection has helped stop illegal logging and poaching operations in Sumatra, and the system is being expanded to three more rainforest reserves in Indonesia, the Amazon and Africa.
With a background in physics and engineering, White worked as web chief of ITER and co-founded Enthuse, a sports engagement and mobile rewards platform. For Rainforest Connection, he’s fashioned a simple device made of discarded cell phones and solar panels that detects and sends alerts when it picks up the sound of chainsaws in protected rainforests, allowing for intervention in real time.
