as a tourist,
for the very first time,
dažďový prales na Borneu,
of the forest that struck me the most.
bol ohromujúci zvuk pralesa.
a rhinoceros hornbill.
– zobákorožec veľký,
over a great distance.
was in fact a gibbon reserve,
bola gibonia rezervácia,
was coming out of the forest that time
ktorý z pralesa vtedy vychádzal,
had actually noticed it.
v skutočnosti nepostrehol.
bola to gibonia rezervácia.
rehabilitating gibbons,
rehabilitácii gibonov,
to spend a lot of their time
that takes place on the side.
ťažbou dreva, ktorá tam prebiehala.
the insects, and the rest,
in recordings you heard,
čo ste po celý čas počúvali
at great distance.
who were posted around this sanctuary
rozostavených okolo rezervácie,
to guard against illegal logging,
pred ilegálnou ťažbou.
again as tourists, out into the forest,
išli na prechádzku do lesa,
who was just sawing a tree down,
kto práve pílil strom,
from the ranger station.
od stanice rangerov.
to hear the chainsaws,
the forest is very, very loud.
prales je veľmi, veľmi hlučný.
that in this modern time,
že v dnešnej dobe,
from a ranger station in a sanctuary,
rangerov v rezervácii,
someone who has a chainsaw gets fired up.
ako niekto naštartuje motorovú pílu.
but in fact, it was quite true.
always to come up with a high-tech,
vždy prísť s high-tech,
it has to be scalable,
musí to byť škálovateľné,
while were there was that
bolo už tam.
that would allow us to stop this
ktorý by nám to umožnil zastaviť,
already in the forest?
Čo už bolo v pralese?
dedicated, three full-time guards,
troch strážcov na plný úväzok,
what was happening out in the forest.
čo sa deje v pralese.
out in the forest.
way out in the middle of nowhere.
ďaleko, uprostred ničoho.
from the nearest road,
od najbližšej cesty,
but they had very good cell phone service,
ale mali veľmi dobré mobilné pokrytie.
were on Facebook all the time,
boli celú dobu na Facebooku,
that in fact it would be possible
priviedlo na myšlienku,
of chainsaws programmatically,
zvuk motorových píl,
to go up in the trees.
s ktorým môžete ísť hore na stromy.
to listen to the sounds of the forest,
ktoré by počúvalo zvuky pralesa,
network that's there,
ktorá tam je,
to this issue for them.
riešením tohto problému.
to talk about saving the rainforest,
o záchrane dažďového pralesa,
definitely all heard about forever.
všetci sústavne počúvame.
have heard about saving the rainforest
počúvali o záchrane pralesa
has never changed:
it's super urgent,
je to super urgentné,
have been destroyed yesterday.
ktoré sa zničili za včerajšok,
about half of the rainforest remains,
zostala asi polovica pralesa,
problems like climate change.
ako napr. klimatické zmeny.
that I didn't realize at the time:
ktorý som si ani ja vtedy neuvedomoval:
for more greenhouse gas
za viac skleníkových plynov
trains, cars, trucks and ships combined.
nákladiaky a lode na Zemi spolu.
to climate change.
pôvodcom klimatických zmien.
that takes place in the rainforest
v dažďových pralesoch,
like the illegal logging that we saw.
ako tá, ktorú sme videli.
enforce the rules that are there,

v reálnom čase a zastaviť ťažbu.
and finding a tree that's been cut.

and fastest way to do it,
najlacnejšie a najrýchlejšie riešenie,
they weren't able to do it,
oni to nevedeli spraviť,
až také lacné a rýchle.
were actually cell phones,
vlastne mobilné telefóny,
by the hundreds of millions every year,
po stovkách miliónov každý rok,
Spojených štátoch,
which of course we should do,
čo by sme samozrejme mali,
sú vynikajúce.
to the sounds of the forest.

ako vidíte tu,
engineering challenges

for allowing me to do that.
že mi to dovolili robiť.
this is a device up in a tree.
hore na strome.
is that they are pretty well obscured
they are able to hear chainsaw noises
dokážu zachytiť zvuk píly
about three square kilometers,
it would make the area unprotected.
územie by zostalo nechránené.
we took it back to Indonesia,
zobrali sme to späť do Indonézie,
by illegal logging.
ilegálnou ťažbou.
illegal chainsaw noises.
zvuky motorových píl.
v reálnom čase.
Everyone had just gotten back down.
a všetci sa práve dostali späť dolu.
and they all quiet down,
a oni všetci stíchli,
until that moment.
to actually stop these loggers.
zastaviť tých drevorubačov.
arrived close to where the loggers are.
do blízkosti miesta, kde sa nachádzali.
where I'm actually regretting
že už aj ľutujem
the other side of this hill.
na druhej strane kopca.
kráčal som hore
been interrupted before --
event for them,
sa tam už odvtedy neukázali.
they have not been back since.
the entire operation works,
on the spot was that
in real time and stop people,
a zastavíte tých ľudí,
they won't come back.
aby sa nikdy nevrátili.
(potlesk)
because we told a lot of people,
že sme to povedali mnohým ľuďom,
amazing stuff started to happen.
skutočne úžasné veci.
started to send us emails, phone calls.
posielať e-maily, telefonovať.
throughout Asia,
people throughout South America,
we thought might be exceptional,
považovali za výnimku,
pretty good cell phone service.
mobilný signál,
že to nie je nič výnimočné.
of the forests that are most under threat.
ktoré sú práve najviac ohrozené.
really amazing happened,
their own old cell phones.
ich vlastné staré mobilné telefóny.
people who are already there,
ľudí, ktorí sú už tam,
and use the existing connectivity,
existujúce pripojenie na sieť,
that are being sent to us
ktoré nám posielajú
something else in their afterlife,
robili niečo iné vo svojom druhom živote.
can be completely recycled,
kompletne recyklovať,
an entirely upcycled device.
plne znovu použité zariadenie.
because of any sort of high-tech solution.
ako nejaké high-tech riešenie.
what's already there,
čo už existuje,
that if it's not phones,
že ak by to neboli mobilné telefóny,
going to be enough there
v novom kontexte.
in new contexts.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Topher White - Conservation technologistThrough his startup Rainforest Connection, Topher White transforms used cell phones into guardians of the rainforest.
Why you should listen
In 2012, Topher White founded Rainforest Connection, a startup which converts recycled cell-phones into solar-powered listening devices to monitor and protect remote areas of the rainforest. Now an established NGO, Rainforest Connection has helped stop illegal logging and poaching operations in Sumatra, and the system is being expanded to three more rainforest reserves in Indonesia, the Amazon and Africa.
With a background in physics and engineering, White worked as web chief of ITER and co-founded Enthuse, a sports engagement and mobile rewards platform. For Rainforest Connection, he’s fashioned a simple device made of discarded cell phones and solar panels that detects and sends alerts when it picks up the sound of chainsaws in protected rainforests, allowing for intervention in real time.
