as a tourist,
for the very first time,
deštné pralesy Bornea.
of the forest that struck me the most.
které mě nejvíc zasáhly.
a rhinoceros hornbill.
dvojzoborožec velký.
over a great distance.
velkou vzdálenost zpívají.
was in fact a gibbon reserve,
je gibonní rezervací,
was coming out of the forest that time
který přicházel z lesa,
had actually noticed it.
rehabilitating gibbons,
to spend a lot of their time
that takes place on the side.
dějící se z dohledu.
the insects, and the rest,

in recordings you heard,
at great distance.

again as tourists, out into the forest,
stále jako turisté, do lesa
who was just sawing a tree down,
kdo zrovna kácel strom.
from the ranger station.
jen několik set metrů od stanice strážců.
to hear the chainsaws,
the forest is very, very loud.
les je velmi, velmi hlasitý.
that in this modern time,
že v této moderní době,
from a ranger station in a sanctuary,
od stanice strážců této rezervace,
someone who has a chainsaw gets fired up.
nastartování motorové pily.
but in fact, it was quite true.
ale je to pravda.
always to come up with a high-tech,
je vždy lákavé přijít s technologickým,
it has to be scalable,
musí to být škálovatelné.
while were there was that
that would allow us to stop this
který by nám pomohl těžbu zastavit,
already in the forest?
dedicated, three full-time guards,

what was happening out in the forest.
co se děje v lese.
velké překvapení,
out in the forest.
way out in the middle of nowhere.
from the nearest road,
od nejbližší silnice,
but they had very good cell phone service,
ale měli výborné mobilní pokrytí.

to go up in the trees.

to listen to the sounds of the forest,
k poslechu lesa přístroje,
network that's there,
to this issue for them.
to talk about saving the rainforest,
o záchraně pralesa,
definitely all heard about forever.
o čem jsme už mnohokrát slyšeli.
have heard about saving the rainforest
o záchraně deštných pralesů
has never changed:
je to opravdu naléhavé,
it's super urgent,
have been destroyed yesterday.
about half of the rainforest remains,
polovina z deštného pralesa,
problems like climate change.
problémy, jako je změna klimatu.

ke změně klimatu.
that takes place in the rainforest
like the illegal logging that we saw.

a tree from a satellite
and fastest way to do it,
a nejrychlejší způsob,
they weren't able to do it,
nejsou schopni to zastavit,
were actually cell phones,
byly opravdu mobily,
by the hundreds of millions every year,
po stovkách milionů ročně,
which of course we should do,
to the sounds of the forest.
that you see here,
engineering challenges
z největších technických výzev,
under a tree canopy,
pod korunami stromů,
pod korunami stromů,
under a tree canopy,
solar panel design that you see here,
byproducts of an industrial process.
vedlejších produktů průmyslu.
for allowing me to do that.
this is a device up in a tree.
toto je zařízení na stromě.
is that they are pretty well obscured
they are able to hear chainsaw noises
ačkoli slyší zvuk pily
about three square kilometers,
asi tři kilometry čtvereční,
it would make the area unprotected.
nechalo by to oblast nechráněnou.
we took it back to Indonesia,
vzali jsme to zpět do Indonésie,
by illegal logging.
ilegální těžbou dřeva.
illegal chainsaw noises.
to našlo zvuky řetězových pil.
Everyone had just gotten back down.
and they all quiet down,
a oni všichni utichli,
slyšet řetězové pily,
until that moment.
to actually stop these loggers.
arrived close to where the loggers are.
where I'm actually regretting
na druhé straně toho kopce.
the other side of this hill.
taky jít nahoru.
been interrupted before --
event for them,
they have not been back since.
se už nikdy nevrátili.
the entire operation works,
on the spot was that
in real time and stop people,
they won't come back.
because we told a lot of people,
protože jsme o tom řekli mnoha lidem,
amazing stuff started to happen.
started to send us emails, phone calls.
lidé z celého světa.
throughout Asia,
people throughout South America,
we thought might be exceptional,
pretty good cell phone service.
of the forests that are most under threat.
především okraje pralesa.
really amazing happened,
their own old cell phones.
people who are already there,
and use the existing connectivity,
vylepšit současné připojení,
that are being sent to us
something else in their afterlife,
i po své smrti,
can be completely recycled,
může být zcela recyklován,
an entirely upcycled device.
to plně využitý materiál.
because of any sort of high-tech solution.
nějaké hi-tech řešení.
co už je k dispozici.
what's already there,
that if it's not phones,
pokud to nebudou staré telefony,
going to be enough there
in new contexts.
v nových souvislostech.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Topher White - Conservation technologistThrough his startup Rainforest Connection, Topher White transforms used cell phones into guardians of the rainforest.
Why you should listen
In 2012, Topher White founded Rainforest Connection, a startup which converts recycled cell-phones into solar-powered listening devices to monitor and protect remote areas of the rainforest. Now an established NGO, Rainforest Connection has helped stop illegal logging and poaching operations in Sumatra, and the system is being expanded to three more rainforest reserves in Indonesia, the Amazon and Africa.
With a background in physics and engineering, White worked as web chief of ITER and co-founded Enthuse, a sports engagement and mobile rewards platform. For Rainforest Connection, he’s fashioned a simple device made of discarded cell phones and solar panels that detects and sends alerts when it picks up the sound of chainsaws in protected rainforests, allowing for intervention in real time.
