Why you should listen

James Patten is an interaction designer, inventor and visual artist working at the intersection of the physical and digital worlds. Patten is a TED Fellow and the founder and principal of the design firm Patten Studio, where his clients have included Björk, Barneys New York, General Electric, Steelcase and Autodesk. Patten earned his doctorate at the MIT Media Lab where he studied in the Tangible Media Group under Hiroshi Ishii. His work has been exhibited or performed in venues such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Transmediale festival in Berlin, the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao and the Ars Electronica Center in Linz, Austria. Patten's work has been recognized in several international design competitions including the International Design Magazine's Annual Design Review, and the International Design Excellence Awards. Tour his Brooklyn workshop.

James Patten: The best computer interface? Maybe ... your hands

James Patten: A melhor "interface" de computador? Talvez... as suas mãos

Filmed:

"O computador é um meio incrivelmente poderoso de expressão criativa", afirma o "designer" James Patten. Mas, neste momento, interagimos com os computadores principalmente escrevendo e tocando. Nesta palestra e demonstração com estilo, Patten imagina uma forma mais visceral e física de dar vida aos seus pensamentos e ideias no mundo digital, tirando do ecrã a "interface" do computador e colocando-a nas suas mãos.

So my first attempttentativa at this

Assim, a minha primeira tentativa
02:53
was at the MITMIT MediaMeios de comunicação LabLaboratório
74

foi no Media Lab do MIT
02:55
with ProfessorProfessor HiroshiHiroshi IshiiIshii,

02:56

03:04
But the problemproblema with this
80
172836
1548
Mas o problema
03:06
was that these magnetsímãs
81
174384
1656
é que estes ímanes
03:08

82

custam mais de 10 000 dólares.
03:10
AlthoughEmbora eachcada one was prettybonita smallpequeno,
83

Embora cada um fosse bastante pequeno,
03:11
altogetherno total they weighedpesava so much

que a mesa em que estavam
03:14
startedcomeçado to sagSAG.
86
182830

03:16
So I wanted to buildconstruir something
87
184388
1332
Eu queria construir algo
03:17
where you could have this kindtipo of interactioninteração

03:21
So to exploreexplorar this ideaidéia,

Para explorar esta ideia,
03:24
I builtconstruído an armyexército of smallpequeno robotsrobôs,

03:28
They're these specialespecial wheelsrodas

São rodas especiais

e quando ligamos estes robôs
03:35
with a videovídeo projectorprojetor,
96

03:37
you have these physicalfisica toolsFerramentas

03:42
So here'saqui está an exampleexemplo of what I mean.
99
210153
1842
Aqui está um exemplo do que quero dizer.
03:43
This is a videovídeo editingeditando applicationaplicação
100
211995
1922
Isto é uma aplicação de edição de vídeo
03:45

102

03:49
So if we want to tweakTweak the colorcor,

Se quisermos ajustar a cor,
03:51
we just enterentrar the colorcor modemodo,
104

entramos no modo de cor,
03:52
and then we get threetrês differentdiferente dialsmostradores

e temos três botões diferentes
03:53
for tweakingajustes the colorcor,
106

1378
para ajustar a cor
03:55
or if we want to adjustajustar the audioáudio,
107
223318

ou se quisermos ajustar o som,
03:57
then we get two differentdiferente dialsmostradores
for that, these physicalfisica objectsobjetos.
108
225279
3341
temos dois botões diferentes para o fazer,
estes objectos físicos.
04:00
So here the left and right channelcanal stayfique in syncsincronizar,
109
228620
2846
Assim, os canais esquerdo e direito
ficam sincronizados,
04:03
but if we want to, we can overridesubstituir that
110
231466

mas se quisermos, podemos ultrapassar isso
04:05
by grabbingagarrando bothambos of them at the samemesmo time.
111
233209

04:08
So the ideaidéia is that we get the speedRapidez

A ideia é que conseguimos
