that go in parallel stripes across the sky?

u stvari samo neprestani talas tog objekta
05:25
poked through into our world?
49
310042

05:29
The Earth is neither flat nor round.
50
313523
4377
Zemlja nije ni ravna ni okrugla.
05:33
It's wavy.
51
317900
4423
Talasasta je.
05:38
It sounds good, but I'll bet you know in your gut that it's not the whole truth,
52
322323
5498
Zvuči dobro, ali kladim se da vam osećaj
govori da to nije kompletna istina,
govori da to nije kompletna istina,
05:43
and I'll tell you why.
53
327821
1558
i reći ću vam zašto.
05:45
I have a two-year-old daughter who's the best thing ever.
54
329379
1996
Imam dvogodišnju ćerku
koja je najbolja na svetu.
koja je najbolja na svetu.
05:47
And I'm just going to come out and say it:
55
331375
2083
I samo ću vam reći:
05:49
My daughter is not a wave.
56
333458
3535
moja ćerka nije talas.
05:52
And you might say, "Surely, Rueben, if you took even just the slightest step back,
57
336993
4580
I vi ćete možda reći: "Stvarno Rubene,
da si makar napravio jedan korak unazad,
da si makar napravio jedan korak unazad,
05:57
the cycles of hunger and eating,
58
341573
2760
ciklusi gladi i hranjenja,
06:00
waking and sleeping, laughing and crying
59
344333
2840
šetanja i spavanja, smeha i plača
06:03
would emerge as pattern."
60
347173
2611
bi se izdvojili kao šablon."
06:05
But I would say, "If I did that,
61
349784
2627
Ali ja bih rekao: "Ako bih to uradio,
06:08
too much would be lost."
62
352411
3489
previše bi se izgubilo."
06:11
This tension between the need to look deeper
63
355900
4729
Ova tenzija između potrebe
da se dublje pogleda
da se dublje pogleda
06:16
and the beauty and immediacy of the world,
64
360629
2954
i lepote i trenutnosti sveta,
06:19
where if you even try to look deeper you've already missed what you're looking for,
65
363583
3702
gde i ako pokušate da pogledate dublje,
već ste izgubili ono što tražite,
već ste izgubili ono što tražite,
06:23
this tension is what makes the sculptures move.
66
367285
3071
ova tenzija je ono što pokreće skulpture.
06:26
And for me, the path between these two extremes
67
370356
2511
I za mene, putanja između
ova dva ekstrema
ova dva ekstrema
06:28
takes the shape of a wave.
68
372867
2735
dobija oblik talasa.
06:31
Let me show you one more.
69
375602
3067
Dozvolite da vam pokažem još jednu.

Džun Koen:
Gledajući svaku od tvojih skulptura,
Gledajući svaku od tvojih skulptura,
07:29
they evoke so many different images.
75
433179
2428
izazivaju toliko različitih slika.
07:31
Some of them are like the wind and some are like waves,
76
435607
2535
Neke su kao vetar, a neke kao talasi,
07:34
and sometimes they look alive and sometimes they seem like math.
77
438142
2885
i nekada one izgledaju živo,
a nekada izgledaju kao matematika.
a nekada izgledaju kao matematika.
07:36
Is there an actual inspiration behind each one?
78
441027
2504
Da li postoji stvarna inspiracija
iza svake?
iza svake?
07:39
Are you thinking of something physical or somthing tangible as you design it?
79
443531
3556
Da li si mislio o nečemu fizičkom ili
nečemu opipljivom dok si ih dizajnirao?
nečemu opipljivom dok si ih dizajnirao?
07:42
RM: Well some of them definitely have a direct observation --
80
447087
3140
RM: Pa neke od njih
definitivno imaju direktnu opservaciju
definitivno imaju direktnu opservaciju
07:46
like literally two raindrops falling,
81
450227
2815
bukvalno kao dve kišne kapi koje padaju,
07:48
and just watching that pattern is so stunning.
82
453042
2875
i samo posmatranje šablona je prelepo.
07:51
And then just trying to figure out how to make that using stuff.
83
455917
5689
I zatim samo pokušavanje da skapiram
kako da napravim to koristeći stvari.
kako da napravim to koristeći stvari.
07:57
I like working with my hands.
84
461621
2529
Ja volim da radim sa svojim rukama.
08:00
There's nothing better than cutting a piece of wood
85
464165
2210
Nema ništa bolje od sečenja parčeta drveta
08:02
and trying to make it move.
86
466375
1750
i pokušavanja da ga pokrenete.
08:04
JC: And does it ever change?
87
468125
1750
DžK: Da li se to ikada menja?
Misliš li da dizajniraš jedno,
08:05
Do you think you're designing one thing,
88
469875
1125
08:06
and then when it's produced it looks like something else?
89
471000
1750
i zatim kada je proizvedeno
to izgleda drugačije?
to izgleda drugačije?
08:08
RM: The "Double Raindrop" I worked on for nine months,
90
472750
3458
RM: Na "Duploj kišnoj kapi" sam radio
devet meseci,
devet meseci,
08:12
and when I finally turned it on,
91
476208
2326
i kada sam je na kraju najzad upalio,
08:14
I actually hated it.
92
478565
3643
zapravo sam je mrzeo.
08:18
The very moment I turned it on, I hated it.
93
482208
4125
Istog trenutka kad sam je upalio,
zamrzeo sam je.
zamrzeo sam je.
08:22
It was like a really deep-down gut reaction, and I wanted to throw it out.
94
486333
3348
To je bio duboki instinkt,
i želeo sam da je bacim.
i želeo sam da je bacim.
08:25
And I happened to have a friend who was over,
95
489681
2144
I zadesilo se
da mi je prijatelj bio u poseti,
da mi je prijatelj bio u poseti,
08:27
and he said, "Why don't you just wait."
96
491825
2012
i on je rekao: "Zašto samo ne sačekaš?"
08:29
And I waited, and the next day I liked it a bit better,
97
493837
4369
I ja sam sačekao i sledećeg dana
mi se malo više sviđala,
mi se malo više sviđala,
08:34
the next day I liked it a bit better, and now I really love it.
98
498206
2961
sledećeg dana još malo više,
i sad je stvarno volim.
i sad je stvarno volim.
08:37
And so I guess, one, the gut reactions a little bit wrong sometimes,
99
501167
4666
I zato pretpostavljam, pod jedan,
instinkt pomalo greši nekada,
instinkt pomalo greši nekada,
08:41
and two, it does not look like as expected.
100
505833
2542
pod dva, ne izgleda kako sam očekivao.
08:44
JC: The relationship evolves over time.
101
508375
2417
DžK: Odnos evoluira vremenom.
Puno ti hvala.
To je bila prelepa poslastica za nas.
To je bila prelepa poslastica za nas.
08:46
Well thank you so much. That was a gorgeous treat for us.
102
510792
875
08:47
RM: Thanks. (JC: Thank you, Reuben.)
103

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Reuben Margolin - Kinetic sculptorReuben Margolin's moving sculptures combine the logic of math with the sensuousness of nature.
Why you should listen
Reuben Margolin makes wave-like sculptures that undulate, spiral, bob and dip in gloriously natural-seeming ways, driven by arrays of cogs and gears. As a kid, Margolin was into math and physics; at college, he switched to liberal arts and ended up studying painting in Italy and Russia. Inspired by the movement of a little green caterpillar, he began trying to capture movements of nature in sculptural form. Now, at his studio in Emeryville, California, he makes large-scale undulating installations of wood and recycled stuff. He also makes pedal-powered rickshaws and has collaborated on several large-scale pedal-powered vehicles.
