ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Apollo Robbins - Gentleman thief
Apollo Robbins will take the phone from your pocket and the ring off your finger, then hand them back to you and (maybe) show you how he did it.

Why you should listen

Pickpocketing is a triumph of craft: a distracting touch with one hand, while the other hand gets to work, and the next thing you know ... where's my wallet? Apollo Robbins is a modern master of picking pockets, possessor of a subtle understanding of human attention, a taste for classic crime, and something he calls "grift sense" -- which, as he told the New Yorker , is “stepping outside yourself and seeing through the other person’s eyes, thinking through the other person’s mind, but it’s happening on a subconscious level.”

Robbins makes a living as an entertainer, speaker and television personality, and he also is the founder of Whizmob Inc., a collective of misdirection experts -- including reformed criminals -- that schools military and law enforcement leaders in fraud and scam tactics. Robbins has also collaborated with academics in his quest to understand how awareness and attention can be manipulated. He's co-author of a 2011 paper that explores something he noticed in his countless hours of practice: people's eyes are more easily misdirected to follow a curve than a straight line.

It's interestingintressant, isn't it? Some of us are a little bitbit

2219
Det är intressant, inte sant?
Några av oss är lite
02:00
more perceptiveklarsynt than othersandra. It seemsverkar that way.
42
108885
2003
mer uppmärksamma än andra. Det verkar så.
02:02
But I have a differentannorlunda theoryteori about that, that modelmodell of attentionuppmärksamhet.
43
110888
3014
Men jag har en annan teori om detta,
denna modell för uppmärksamhet.
02:05
They have fancyfint modelsmodeller of attentionuppmärksamhet, Posner'sPosners trinityTrinity modelmodell of attentionuppmärksamhet.
44
113902
3712
De har tjusiga modeller för uppmärksamhet,
till exempel Posners modell
av olika sorters uppmärksamhet.
02:09
For me, I like to think of it very simpleenkel, like a surveillanceövervakning systemsystemet.
45
117614
3187
Jag gillar att tänka på det mycket enkelt,
som ett övervakningssystem.
02:12
It's kindsnäll of like you have all these fancyfint sensorssensorer,
46
120801
2962
Det är ungefär som om du har
alla dessa högteknologiska sensorer,
02:15
and insideinuti your brainhjärna is a little securitysäkerhet guardvakt.
47
123763
2253
och inuti din hjärna
finns en liten säkerhetsvakt.
02:18
For me, I like to call him FrankFrank.
48
126016
2266
Jag kallar honom Frank.
02:20
So FrankFrank is sittingSammanträde at a deskskrivbord.
49
128282
2230
Så Frank sitter vid ett skrivbord.
02:22
He's got all sortssorterar of coolHäftigt informationinformation in frontfrämre of him,
50
130512
2218
Han har alla typer
av tuff information framför sig,
02:24
high-techavancerad equipmentUtrustning, he's got cameraskameror,
51
132730
2019
högteknologisk utrustning, han har kameror,
02:26
he's got a little phonetelefon that he can pickplocka up, listen to the earsöron,
52
134749
3130
han har en liten telefon
som han kan använda
för att lyssna på öronen,
02:29
all these senseskänner, all these perceptionsuppfattningar.
53
137879
2475
alla dessa sinnen, alla intryck.
02:32
But attentionuppmärksamhet is what steersstutar your perceptionsuppfattningar,
54
140354
2569
Men uppmärksamhet
är vad som styr dina uppfattningar,
02:34
is what controlskontroller your realityverklighet. It's the gatewayinkörsport to the mindsinne.
55
142923
3653
det som styr din verklighet.
Det är ingången till sinnena.
02:38
If you don't attenddelta to something, you can't be awaremedveten of it.
56
146576
2835
Om du inte är uppmärksam på något
kan du inte vara medveten om det.
02:41
But ironicallyironiskt, you can attenddelta to something withoututan beingvarelse awaremedveten of it.
57
149411
3511
Ironiskt nog kan du vara uppmärksam
på något utan att vara medveten om det.
02:44
That's why there's the cocktailcocktail effecteffekt:
58
152922
1487
Det är därför cocktaileffekten finns:
02:46
When you're in a partyfest, you're havinghar conversationskonversationer with someonenågon,
59
154409
2494
När du är på en fest
och samtalar med någon,
02:48
and yetän you can recognizeerkänna your namenamn
60
156903
1431
och ändå kan du känna igen ditt namn
02:50
and you didn't even realizeinse you were listeninglyssnande to that.
61
158334
2581
trots att du inte lyssnade efter det.
02:52
Now, for my jobjobb, I have to playspela with techniquestekniker to exploitutnyttja this,
62
160915
2943
I mitt jobb måste jag använda
olika metoder för att utnyttja detta,
02:55
to playspela with your attentionuppmärksamhet as a limitedbegränsad resourceresurs.
63
163858
3061
att använda din uppmärksamhet
som en begränsad resurs.
02:58
So if I could controlkontrollera how you spendspendera your attentionuppmärksamhet,
64
166919
3135
Så om jag kan kontrollera
hur du spenderar din uppmärksamhet,
03:02
if I could maybe stealstjäla your attentionuppmärksamhet throughgenom a distractiondistraktion.
65
170054
3033
om jag kanske kunde stjäla
din uppmärksamhet genom en distraktion.
03:05
Now, insteadistället of doing it like misdirectionvilseledning
66
173087
2784
Istället för att göra det som vilseledning
03:07
and throwingkasta it off to the sidesida,
67
175871
1452
och kasta den åt sidan,
03:09
insteadistället, what I choosevälja to focusfokus on is FrankFrank,
68
177323
2580
väljer jag att fokusera på Frank,
03:11
to be ablestånd to playspela with the FrankFrank insideinuti your headhuvud,
69
179903
2600
att kunna lura Frank inuti ditt huvud,
din lilla säkerhetsvakt,
03:14
your little securitysäkerhet guardvakt,
70
182503
940
03:15
and get you, insteadistället of focusingfokusera on your externalextern senseskänner,
71
183443
3037
och få dig att istället för
att fokusera på dina yttre sinnen,
03:18
just to go internalinre for a secondandra.
72
186480
2885
att bara gå in i dig själv en sekund.
03:21
So if I askfråga you to accesstillgång a memoryminne, like, what is that?
73
189365
3210
Om jag ber dig att leta efter ett minne,
till exempel, vad är det?
03:24
What just happenedhände? Do you have a walletplånbok?
74
192575
1612
Vad hände? Har du en plånbok?
03:26
Do you have an AmericanAmerikansk ExpressExpress in your walletplånbok?
75
194187
1891
Har du ett American Express-kort
i plånboken?
03:28
And when I do that, your FrankFrank turnsvarv around.
76
196078
3772
Och när jag gör det,
vänder sig din Frank om.
03:31
He accessesåtkomster the filefil. He has to rewindspola tillbaka the tapetejp.
77
199850
2255
Han öppnar filen.
Han måste spola tillbaka bandet.
03:34
And what's interestingintressant is, he can't rewindspola tillbaka the tapetejp
78
202105
2163
Och det intressanta är,
han inte kan spola tillbaka bandet
03:36
at the samesamma time that he's tryingpåfrestande to processbearbeta newny datadata.
79
204268
2930
samtidigt som han försöker
behandla ny information.
03:39
Now, I mean, this soundsljud like a good theoryteori,
80
207198
1355
Detta låter som en bra teori,
03:40
but I could talk for a long time and tell you lots of things,
81
208553
2718
jag skulle kunna prata länge
och berätta massor av saker,
03:43
and they mayMaj be truesann, a portiondel of them,
82
211271
1986
och de kan vara sanna, en del av dem,
03:45
but I think it's better if I triedförsökte to showshow that to you here liveleva.
83
213257
2730
men jag tror det är bättre
om jag visar er här på scen.
03:47
So if I come down, I'm going to do a little bitbit of shoppinghandla.
