ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Marlene Zuk - Evolutionary biologist
Marlene Zuk studies insect behavior -- and how humans use animal behavior to think about how we behave ourselves.

Why you should listen

Marlene Zuk is a biologist and writer who researches animal behavior and evolution, mostly using insects as subjects. Zuk is interested in the ways that people use animal behavior to think about human behavior, and vice versa, as well as in the public's understanding of evolution. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior at the University of Minnesota -- including a seminar called “What’s the Alternative to Alternative Medicine?”

In addition to publishing numerous scientific articles, Zuk has published four books for a general audience: Sexual Selections: What We Can and Can’t Learn About Sex from AnimalsRiddled with Life: Friendly Worms, Ladybug Sex, and the Parasites That Make Us Who We AreSex on Six Legs: Lessons on Life, Love and Language from the Insect World; and most recently, Paleofantasy: What Evolution Really Tells Us About Sex, Diet and the Way We Live.

is break打破 a lot of the rules規則

04:48
of what males男性 and females女性 are like.
81
276872
1955
04:50
So that males男性 are always

82

05:07
because they not only transfer轉讓

88
295059
3225
05:10
they also give the female

99
330543

06:01
And indeed確實, neither也不 can the katydids螽斯.
104
349216
2401
06:04
And so what that means手段
105
352343
1912
06:06
is the katydid males男性 are very choosy挑三揀四
106
354279

about who they offer提供
these nuptial婚禮 gifts禮品 to.
107
358111
3080
06:13
Now, the gift禮品 is very nutritious有營養,
108
361215
1926
06:15
and the female eats it
during and after mating交配.
109
363165
2694
06:17
So, the bigger it is,
the better off the male is,
110
365883
2357
06:20
because that means手段 more time for his sperm精子
111
368264
2176
06:22
to drain排水 into her body身體
and fertilize施肥 her eggs.
112
370464
2448
06:25
But it also means手段 that the males男性
are very passive被動 about mating交配,
113
373521
4350
06:29
whereas the females女性
are extremely非常 aggressive侵略性 and competitive競爭的,
114
377895
3525

06:37
So, it's not exactly究竟

116

09:52
I think what that means手段

is that people just couldn't不能 see

180

10:07
But when we do that, we really miss小姐 out

181
595626
5439
