that religion宗教 really properly正確 understood了解

01:00
is not about belief信仰, but about behavior行為.

3000
01:03
Perhaps也許 we should say the same相同 thing about optimism樂觀.
10
45000
4000
01:07
How dare we be optimistic
11
49000
4000
01:11
Optimism樂觀 is sometimes有時 characterized特徵 as a belief信仰, an intellectual知識分子 posture姿勢.
12
53000
8000
01:19
As Mahatma聖雄 Gandhi甘地 famously著名 said,
13
61000
3000
01:22
"You must必須 become成為 the change更改 you wish希望 to see in the world世界."

18
79000
6000
01:43
is also, I think, sometimes有時 misunderstood誤解 in this context上下文.
19
85000
4000
01:47
I'm a big advocate主張 of changing改變
20
89000
3000
01:50
the lightbulbs電燈泡 and buying購買 hybrids混合動力車,
21
92000
3000
01:53
and Tipper自卸車 and I put 33 solar太陽能 panels面板 on our house,
22
95000
4000
01:57
and dug the geothermal地熱 wells, and did all of that other stuff東東.
23
99000
5000
02:02
But, as important重要 as it is to change更改 the lightbulbs電燈泡,
24
104000
4000
02:06
it is more important重要 to change更改 the laws法律.
25
108000
2000
02:08
And when we change更改 our behavior行為 in our daily日常 lives生活,
26
110000
6000
02:14
we sometimes有時 leave離開 out the citizenship國籍 part部分
27
116000
3000
02:17
and the democracy民主 part部分. In order訂購 to be optimistic樂觀 about this,
28
119000
7000
02:24
we have to become成為 incredibly令人難以置信 active活性 as citizens公民 in our democracy民主.
29
126000
6000
02:30
In order訂購 to solve解決 the climate氣候 crisis危機,

2000
02:32
we have to solve解決 the democracy民主 crisis危機.
31
134000
3000
02:35
And we have one.
32
137000
2000
02:37
I have been trying to tell this story故事 for a long time.
33
139000
5000
02:42
I was reminded提醒 of that recently最近, by a woman女人

4000
02:46
who walked past過去 the table I was sitting坐在 at,

3000
02:49
just staring凝視 at me as she walked past過去. She was in her 70s,
36

02:53
looked看著 like she had a kind face面對. I thought nothing of it
37
155000
4000
02:57
until直到 I saw from the corner of my eye
38
159000
3000
03:00
she was walking步行 from the opposite對面 direction方向,
39
162000
2000
03:02
also just staring凝視 at me. And so I said, "How do you do?"
40
164000
4000
03:06
And she said, "You know, if you dyed染色 your hair頭髮 black黑色,
41
168000
3000
03:09
you would look just like Al Gore血塊." (Laughter笑聲)
42
171000
5000
03:19
Many許多 years年份 ago, when I was a young年輕 congressman眾議員,
43
181000
2000
03:21
I spent花費 an awful可怕 lot of time dealing交易 with the challenge挑戰

of nuclear arms武器 control控制 -- the nuclear arms武器 race種族.
45
187000

03:28
And the military軍事 historians歷史學家 taught me,
46
190000
3000
03:31
during that quest尋求, that military軍事 conflicts衝突 are typically一般
47
193000
5000
03:36
put into three categories類別: local本地 battles戰鬥,

03:51
And each level水平 of conflict衝突 requires要求 a different不同 allocation分配 of resources資源,

03:56
a different不同 approach途徑,

04:02
Environmental環境的 challenges挑戰 fall秋季 into the same相同 three categories類別,
54
224000
4000
04:06
and most of what we think about
55
228000
1000
But there are also
57

4000
04:14
regional區域性 environmental環境的 problems問題, like acid rain
58
236000
3000
04:17
from the Midwest中西部 to the Northeast東北, and from Western西 Europe歐洲

And there are lots of those. But the climate氣候 crisis危機
62

04:30

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Al Gore - Climate advocate
Nobel Laureate Al Gore focused the world’s attention on the global climate crisis. Now he’s showing us how we’re moving towards real solutions.

Why you should listen

Former Vice President Al Gore is co-founder and chairman of Generation Investment Management. While he’s is a senior partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and a member of Apple, Inc.’s board of directors, Gore spends the majority of his time as chair of The Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit devoted to solving the climate crisis.

He is the author of the bestsellers Earth in the Balance, An Inconvenient Truth, The Assault on Reason, Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis, and most recently, The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change. He is the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth and is the co-recipient, with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 for “informing the world of the dangers posed by climate change.”

Gore was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976, 1978, 1980 and 1982 and the U.S. Senate in 1984 and 1990. He was inaugurated as the 45th Vice President of the United States on January 20, 1993, and served eight years.
