ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Emma Marris - Environmental writer
Emma Marris is a writer focusing on environmental science, policy and culture, with an approach that she paints as being "more interested in finding and describing solutions than delineating problems, and more interested in joy than despair."

Why you should listen

Emma Marris has written among others for Nature, Discover and the New York Times. She challenges the notion that nature can only be preserved in its pristine, pre-human state, a too-narrow characterization "that thwarts bold new plans to save the environment and prevents us from having a fuller relationship with nature." Humans have changed the landscape they inhabit since prehistory, and climate change means even the remotest places now bear the fingerprints of humanity. In her book Rambunctious Garden: Saving Nature in the Post-Wild World, she argues that we need different strategies for saving nature and champions a blurring of the lines between nature and people for a responsible care of our humanized planet.

Emma Marris: Nature is everywhere -- we just need to learn to see it

00:16
Now, when I say this, I don't mean
that we are destroying銷毀 nature性質

00:19
that they will have wanted us to preserve保留,

00:22
although雖然 that is
unfortunately不幸 also the case案件.
3

2656
00:25
What I mean here is that we've我們已經 started開始
to define確定 nature性質 in a way
4
13000
3816
00:28
that's so purist純粹的 and so strict嚴格
5
16840
3016
00:31
that under the definition定義
we're creating創建 for ourselves我們自己,
6
19880
2736
00:34
there won't慣於 be any nature性質
left for our children孩子
7

00:37
when they're adults成年人.
8
25040
1200
00:39
But there's a fix固定 for this.
9
27120
2536
00:41
So let me explain說明.
10
29680
1240
00:43
Right now, humans人類 use half of the world世界
11
31680
3456
00:47
to live生活, to grow增長 their crops作物
and their timber木材,
12
35160
2696
00:49
to pasture牧場 their animals動物.
13
37880
1896
00:51
If you added添加 up all the human人的 beings眾生,
14
39800
1816
00:53
we would weigh稱重 10 times as much
as all the wild野生 mammals哺乳動物 put together一起.
15
41640
4240
00:58
We cut roads道路 through通過 the forest森林.
16
46800
2320
01:01
We have added添加 little plastic塑料 particles粒子
to the sand on ocean海洋 beaches海灘.
17
49680
4336
01:06
We've我們已經 changed the chemistry化學 of the soil
with our artificial人造 fertilizers化肥.
18
54040
5096
01:11
And of course課程, we've我們已經 changed
the chemistry化學 of the air空氣.
19
59160
3216
01:14
So when you take your next下一個 breath呼吸,
20
62400
1856
01:16
you'll你會 be breathing呼吸 in
42 percent百分 more carbon dioxide二氧化碳
21
64280
3856
01:20
than if you were breathing呼吸 in 1750.
22
68160
2200
01:23
So all of these changes變化, and many許多 others其他,
23
71280
2456
01:25
have come to be kind of lumped集總 together一起
under this rubric專欄 of the "Anthropocene人類世."
24
73760
4080
01:30
And this is a term術語
that some geologists地質學家 are suggesting提示
25
78480
2536
01:33
we should give to our current當前 epoch時代,
26
81040
1816
01:34
given特定 how pervasive無處不在
human人的 influence影響 has been over it.
27
82880
2760
01:38
Now, it's still just a proposed建議 epoch時代,
but I think it's a helpful有幫助 way
28
86320
3856
01:42
to think about the magnitude大小
of human人的 influence影響 on the planet行星.
29
90200
3680
01:46
So where does this put nature性質?
30
94800
1696
01:48
What counts計數 as nature性質 in a world世界
where everything is influenced影響 by humans人類?
31
96520
3720
01:53
So 25 years年份 ago, environmental環境的 writer作家
Bill法案 McKibben麥吉 said
32
101400
4176
01:57
that because nature性質
was a thing apart距離 from man
33
105600
4496
02:02
and because climate氣候 change更改 meant意味著
34
110120
1576
02:03
that every一切 centimeter厘米 of the Earth地球
was altered改變 by man,
35
111720
3616
02:07
then nature性質 was over.
36
115360
2096
02:09
In fact事實, he called his book
"The End結束 of Nature性質."
37
117480
2360
02:14
I disagree不同意 with this.
I just disagree不同意 with this.
38
122000
2256
02:16
I disagree不同意 with this definition定義 of nature性質,
because, fundamentally從根本上, we are animals動物.
39
124280
4336
02:20
Right? Like, we evolved進化 on this planet行星
40
128639
2817
02:23
in the context上下文 of all the other animals動物
with which哪一個 we share分享 a planet行星,
41
131480
4096
02:27
and all the other plants植物,
and all the other microbes微生物.
42
135600
2576
02:30
And so I think that nature性質
43
138200
2296
02:32
is not that which哪一個 is untouched不變
by humanity人性, man or woman女人.
44
140520
4056
02:36
I think that nature性質
is anywhere隨地 where life thrives蓬勃發展,
45
144600
4136
02:40
anywhere隨地 where there are
02:43
anywhere隨地 that's green綠色 and blue藍色
and thriving and filled填充 with life
47
151800
3216
02:47
and growing生長.
48
155040
1200
02:49
And under that definition定義,
49
157600
1896
02:51
things look a little bit different不同.
50
159520
2536
02:54
Now, I understand理解 that there
are certain某些 parts部分 of this nature性質
51
162080
3696
02:57
that speak說話 to us in a special特別 way.
52
165800
2616
03:00
Places地方 like Yellowstone黃石,
53
168440
1656
03:02
or the Mongolian steppe草原,
54
170120
1696
03:03
or the Great Barrier屏障 Reef
55
171840
1336
03:05
or the Serengeti塞倫蓋蒂.
56
173200
1496
03:06
Places地方 that we think of
as kind of Edenic伊甸園 representations交涉
57
174720
4016
03:10
of a nature性質 before
we screwed everything up.
58
178760
2600
03:14
And in a way, they are less impacted影響
by our day to day activities活動.
59
182560
4016
03:18
Many許多 of these places地方
have no roads道路 or few少數 roads道路,
60
186600
2696
03:21
so on, like such這樣.
61
189320
1576
03:22
But ultimately最終, even these Edens伊登斯
are deeply influenced影響 by humans人類.
62
190920
5776
03:28
Now, let's just take
North America美國, for example,
63
196720
2256
03:31
since以來 that's where we're meeting會議.
64
199000
1616
03:32
So between之間 about 15,000 years年份 ago
when people first came來了 here,
65
200640
3416
03:36
they started開始 a process處理
of interacting互動 with the nature性質
66
204080
2496
03:38
that led to the extinction滅絕
of a big slew of large-bodied體型大 animals動物,
67
206600
4376
03:43
from the mastodon乳齒象
to the giant巨人 ground地面 sloth懶惰,
68
211000
2256
03:46
all of these cool animals動物
that unfortunately不幸 are no longer with us.
70
214560
3616
03:50
And when those animals動物 went extinct絕種,
71
218200
1816
03:52
you know, the ecosystems生態系統
didn't stand still.
72
220040
2576
changed grasslands草原 into forests森林,
73
222640
3616
03:58
changed the composition組成 of forest森林
from one tree to another另一個.
74
226280
2800
04:02
So even in these Edens
75
230000
1656
04:03
even in these perfect-looking完美的外觀 places地方
76
231680
1816
04:05
that seem似乎 to remind提醒 us
of a past過去 before humans人類,
77
233520
3496
04:09
we're essentially實質上 looking
at a humanized人性化 landscape景觀.
78
237040
3080
04:12
Not just these prehistoric史前 humans人類,
but historical歷史的 humans人類, indigenous土著 people
79
240960
3576
04:16
all the way up until直到 the moment時刻
when the first colonizers殖民者 showed顯示 up.
80
244560
3240
04:20
And the case案件 is the same相同
for the other continents大陸 as well.
81
248480
2776
04:23
Humans人類 have just been involved參與 in nature性質
82
251280
2816
04:26
in a very influential有影響 way
for a very long time.
83
254120
2880
04:30
Now, just recently最近, someone有人 told me,
84
258440
1776
04:32
"Oh, but there are still wild野生 places地方."
85
260240
1856
04:34
And I said, "Where? Where? I want to go."
86
262120
2216
04:36
And he said, "The Amazon亞馬遜."
87
264360
1896
04:38
And I was like, "Oh, the Amazon亞馬遜.
I was just there.
88
266280
3456
04:41
It's awesome真棒.
sent發送 me to Manú National國民 Park公園,
89
269760
3136
04:44
which哪一個 is in the Peruvian秘魯 Amazon亞馬遜,
90
272920
1576
04:46
but it's a big chunk of rainforest雨林,
04:50
protected保護 as a national國民 park公園,
92
278200
1616
04:51
one of the most, in fact事實,
biodiverse生物多樣性 parks公園 in the world世界.
93
279840
2696
04:54
And when I got in there with my canoe
what did I find, but people.
94
282560
4120
04:59
People have been living活的 there
for hundreds數以百計 and thousands數千 of years年份.
95
287640
3816
05:03
People live生活 there, and they don't
just float浮動 over the jungle叢林.
96
291480
2856
05:06
They have a meaningful富有意義的 relationship關係
with the landscape景觀.
97
294360
2600
05:09
They hunt打獵. They grow增長 crops作物.
98
297480
2296
05:11
They domesticate crops作物.
99
299800
1496
05:13
They use the natural自然 resources資源
to build建立 their houses房屋,
100
301320
2896
05:16
to thatch their houses房屋.
101
304240
1256
05:17
They even make pets寵物 out of animals動物
that we consider考慮 to be wild野生 animals動物.
102
305520
4016
05:21
These people are there
103
309560
2096
05:23
and they're interacting互動
with the environment環境
104
311680
2096
05:25
in a way that's really meaningful富有意義的
and that you can see in the environment環境.
105
313800
3496
05:29
Now, I was with
an anthropologist人類學家 on this trip,
106
317320
2216
05:31
and he told me, as we were
floating漂浮的 down the river,
107
319560
2856
05:34
he said, "There are
no demographic人口 voids空隙 in the Amazon亞馬遜."
108
322440
4656
05:39
This statement聲明 has really stuck卡住 with me,
109
327120
1936
05:41
because what it means手段
is that the whole整個 Amazon亞馬遜 is like this.
110
329080
2856
05:43
There's people everywhere到處.
111
331960
1280
05:45
And many許多 other
tropical熱帶 forests森林 are the same相同,
112
333880
2336
05:48
and not just tropical熱帶 forests森林.
113
336240
1576
05:49
People have influenced影響
ecosystems生態系統 in the past過去,
114
337840
3216
05:53
and they continue繼續
to influence影響 them in the present當下,
115
341080
2776
05:55
even in places地方 where
they're harder更難 to notice注意.
116
343880
3160
05:59
So, if all of the definitions定義 of nature性質
that we might威力 want to use
117
347720
5216
06:04
that involve涉及 it being存在
untouched不變 by humanity人性
118
352960
2976
06:07
or not having people in it,
119
355960
1336
06:09
if all of those actually其實 give us
a result結果 where we don't have any nature性質,
120
357320
5336
06:14
then maybe they're the wrong錯誤 definitions定義.
121
362680
2416
06:17
Maybe we should define確定 it
by the presence存在 of multiple species種類,
122
365120
3496
06:20
by the presence存在 of a thriving life.
123
368640
2040
06:23
Now, if we do it that way,
124
371440
2016
06:25
what do we get?
125
373480
1456
06:26
Well, it's this kind of miracle
126
374960
2376
06:29
All of a sudden突然,
there's nature性質 all around us.
127
377360
2280
06:32
All of a sudden突然,
we see this Monarch君主 caterpillar毛蟲
128
380160
2696
06:34
munching大嚼 on this plant,
129
382880
1856
06:36
and we realize實現 that there it is,
130
384760
1816
06:38
and it's in this empty lot in Chattanooga查塔努加.
131
386600
2800
06:42
And look at this empty lot.
132
390320
1336
06:43
I mean, there's, like, probably大概,
133
391680
1776

13:18
These children孩子 have, that --

13:20
You know, under my definition定義,
280
788240
1456
13:21
there's a lot of the planet行星
that counts計數 as nature性質,
281
789720
2376
13:24
but this would be one of the few少數 places地方
that wouldn't不會 count計數 as nature性質.
282
792120

13:27
There's nothing there except humans人類,
no other plants植物, no other animals動物.
283

3376
13:30
And what I really wanted to do
284
798880
1456
13:32
was just, like,
throw a ladder階梯 over the side
285
800360
2096
13:34
and get all these kids孩子 to come up with me
into this cool meadow草地.
286
802480
3536
13:38
In a way, I feel like this is
the choice選擇 that faces面孔 us.
287
806040
3296
13:41
If we dismiss解僱 these new natures本性
as not acceptable接受 or trashy沒用 or no good,
288
809360
4600
13:47
we might威力 as well just pave鋪平 them over.
289
815040
2576
13:49
And in a world世界 where
everything is changing改變,
290
817640
2536
13:52
we need to be very careful小心
about how we define確定 nature性質.
291
820200
2800
13:55
In order訂購 not to steal it
from our children孩子,
292
823800
2056
13:57
we have to do two things.
293
825880
1936
13:59
First, we cannot不能 define確定 nature性質
as that which哪一個 is untouched不變.
294
827840
3840
14:04
This never made製作 any sense anyway無論如何.
295
832360
1576
14:05
Nature性質 has not been untouched不變
for thousands數千 of years年份.
296
833960
2496
14:08
And it excludes排除 most of the nature性質
that most people can visit訪問
297
836480
3816
14:12
and have a relationship關係 with,
298
840320
1976
14:14
including包含 only nature性質
that children孩子 cannot不能 touch觸摸.
299
842320
3400
14:18
Which哪一個 brings帶來 me to the second第二 thing
that we have to do,
300
846360
2616
14:21
which哪一個 is that we have to
14:23
because that which哪一個
is untouched不變 is unloved沒人愛.
302
851520
2496

14:39

14:47
we need people --

309
