ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Clay Shirky - Social Media Theorist
Clay Shirky argues that the history of the modern world could be rendered as the history of ways of arguing, where changes in media change what sort of arguments are possible -- with deep social and political implications.

Why you should listen

Clay Shirky's work focuses on the rising usefulness of networks -- using decentralized technologies such as peer-to-peer sharing, wireless, software for social creation, and open-source development. New technologies are enabling new kinds of cooperative structures to flourish as a way of getting things done in business, science, the arts and elsewhere, as an alternative to centralized and institutional structures, which he sees as self-limiting. In his writings and speeches he has argued that "a group is its own worst enemy."

Shirky is an adjunct professor in New York Universityʼs graduate Interactive Telecommunications Program, where he teaches a course named “Social Weather.” Heʼs the author of several books. This spring at the TED headquarters in New York, he gave an impassioned talk against SOPA/PIPA that saw 1 million views in 48 hours.

I want to talk about the transformed改造 media媒體 landscape景觀,
0
0
4000
00:20
and what it means手段 for anybody任何人 who has a message信息 that they want to get out
1
4000
4000
00:24
to anywhere隨地 in the world世界.
2
8000
2000
00:26
And I want to illustrate說明 that by telling告訴 a couple一對 of stories故事
3
10000
2000
00:28
about that transformation轉型.
4
12000
2000
00:30
I'll start開始 here. Last November十一月 there was a presidential總統 election選舉.
5
14000
3000
00:33
You probably大概 read something about it in the papers文件.
6
17000
3000
00:36
And there was some concern關心 that in some parts部分 of the country國家
7
20000
3000
00:39
there might威力 be voter選民 suppression抑制.
8
23000
2000
00:41
And so a plan計劃 came來了 up to video視頻 the vote投票.
9
25000
2000
00:43
And the idea理念 was that individual個人 citizens公民
10
27000
3000
00:46
with phones手機 capable of taking服用 photos相片 or making製造 video視頻
11
30000
3000
00:49
would document文件 their polling輪詢 places地方,
12
33000
2000
00:51
on the lookout小心 for any kind of voter選民 suppression抑制 techniques技術,
13
35000
3000
00:54
and would upload上載 this to a central中央 place地點.
14
38000
2000
00:56
And that this would operate操作 as a kind of citizen公民 observation意見 --
15
40000
4000
01:00
that citizens公民 would not be there just to cast individual個人 votes,
16
44000
4000
01:04
but also to help ensure確保 the sanctity尊嚴 of the vote投票 overall總體.
17
48000
4000
01:08
So this is a pattern模式 that assumes假設 we're all in this together一起.
18
52000
4000
01:12
What matters事項 here
19
56000
2000
重點是
01:14
01:16
it's social社會 capital首都.
21
60000
2000
01:18
These tools工具 don't get socially社交上 interesting有趣
22
62000
3000
01:21
until直到 they get technologically技術 boring無聊.
23
65000
3000
01:24
It isn't when the shiny閃亮 new tools工具 show顯示 up
24
68000
4000
01:28
that their uses使用 start開始 permeating滲透 society社會.
25
72000
2000
01:30
It's when everybody每個人 is able能夠 to take them for granted理所當然.
26
74000
4000
01:34
Because now that media媒體 is increasingly日益 social社會,
27
78000
3000
01:37
innovation革新 can happen發生 anywhere隨地
28
81000
3000
01:40
that people can take for granted理所當然 the idea理念 that we're all in this together一起.
29
84000
4000
01:44
And so we're starting開始 to see a media媒體 landscape景觀
30
88000
3000
01:47
in which哪一個 innovation革新 is happening事件 everywhere到處,
31
91000
3000
01:50
and moving移動 from one spot to another另一個.
32
94000
2000
01:52
That is a huge巨大 transformation轉型.
33
96000
4000
01:56
Not to put too fine a point on it, the moment時刻 we're living活的 through通過 --
34
100000
3000
01:59
the moment時刻 our historical歷史的 generation is living活的 through通過 --
35
103000
3000
02:02
is the largest最大 increase增加 in expressive表現的 capability能力
36
106000
4000
02:06
in human人的 history歷史.
37
110000
2000
02:08
Now that's a big claim要求. I'm going to try to back it up.
38
112000
2000
02:10
There are only four periods in the last 500 years年份
39
114000
4000
02:14
where media媒體 has changed enough足夠 to qualify修飾 for the label標籤 "revolution革命."
40
118000
3000
02:17
The first one is the famous著名 one, the printing印花 press:
41
121000
3000
02:20
movable活動 type類型, oil-based油基 inks油墨, that whole整個 complex複雜 of innovations創新
42
124000
3000
02:23
that made製作 printing印花 possible可能
43
127000
2000
02:25
and turned轉身 Europe歐洲 upside-down上下翻轉, starting開始 in the middle中間 of the 1400s.
44
129000
3000
02:28
Then, a couple一對 of hundred years年份 ago,
45
132000
2000
02:30
there was innovation革新 in two-way雙向 communication通訊,
46
134000
2000
02:32
conversational對話的 media媒體: first the telegraph電報, then the telephone電話.
47
136000
3000

02:38
then real-time即時的 voice語音 based基於 conversations對話.
49
142000
2000
02:40
Then, about 150 years年份 ago,
50
144000
2000
02:42
there was a revolution革命 in recorded記錄 media媒體 other than print打印:
51
146000
3000
02:45
first photos相片, then recorded記錄 sound聲音,
52
149000
3000
02:48
then movies電影, all encoded編碼 onto physical物理 objects對象.
53
152000
3000
02:51
And finally最後, about 100 years年份 ago, the harnessing治理 of electromagnetic電磁 spectrum光譜
54
155000
3000
02:54
to send發送 sound聲音 and images圖片 through通過 the air空氣 -- radio無線電 and television電視.
55
158000
4000
02:58
This is the media媒體 landscape景觀 as we knew知道 it in the 20th century世紀.
56
162000
4000
03:02
This is what those of us of a certain某些 age年齡
57
166000
3000

03:08
But there is a curious好奇 asymmetry不對稱 here.
59
172000

03:10
The media媒體 that is good at creating創建 conversations對話

3000
03:13

03:32
That was the media媒體 landscape景觀
69

03:36
And this is what changed.
71
200000
2000

The second第二 big change更改
86
235000

04:13
is that, as all media媒體 gets得到 digitized數字化,

04:15
the Internet互聯網 also becomes the mode模式 of carriage運輸

04:25
And that means手段 that every一切 medium

04:35
media媒體 is increasingly日益 less just a source資源 of information信息,
95
259000
3000
04:38
and it is increasingly日益 more a site現場 of coordination協調,
96

10:57
Bundle up the message信息. Send發送 the same相同 message信息 to everybody每個人.

641000
4000

11:05
Very expensive昂貴 to do,
232
649000
2000
11:07
so there is not a lot of competition競爭.
233
651000
2000
11:09
This is how you reach達到 people.
234
653000

social社會, ubiquitous普及 and cheap低廉.
237
661000
3000
11:20
Now most organizations組織 that are trying to send發送 messages消息
238
664000
5000
11:25
to the outside world世界, to the distributed分散式 collection採集 of the audience聽眾,

4000
11:29
are now used to this change更改.
240
673000
2000
11:31
The audience聽眾 can talk back.
241
675000
2000
11:33
And that's a little freaky辣媽. But you can get used to it after a while, as people do.
242
677000
5000
11:38
But that's not the really crazy change更改 that we're living活的 in the middle中間 of.
243
682000
4000
11:42
The really crazy change更改 is here:
244
686000
3000
11:45
it's the fact事實 that they are no longer disconnected斷開的 from each other,
245
689000

11:49
the fact事實 that former前任的 consumers消費者 are now producers生產商,

11:52
the fact事實 that the audience聽眾 can talk directly to one another另一個;
247
696000

11:55
because there is a lot more amateurs業餘 than professionals專業人士,

11:58
and because the size尺寸 of the network網絡,
