ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rory Sutherland - Advertising guru
Rory Sutherland stands at the center of an advertising revolution in brand identities, designing cutting-edge, interactive campaigns that blur the line between ad and entertainment.

Why you should listen

From unlikely beginnings as a classics teacher to his current job as Vice Chairman of Ogilvy Group, Rory Sutherland has created his own brand of the Cinderella story. He joined Ogilvy & Mather's planning department in 1988, and became a junior copywriter, working on Microsoft's account in its pre-Windows days. An early fan of the Internet, he was among the first in the traditional ad world to see the potential in these relatively unknown technologies.

An immediate understanding of the possibilities of digital technology and the Internet powered Sutherland's meteoric rise. He continues to provide insight into advertising in the age of the Internet and social media through his blog at Campaign's Brand Republic site, his column "The Wiki Man" at The Spectator and his busy Twitter account.

2000
00:37
that what we create創建 in advertising廣告,
8
22000
3000
00:40
which哪一個 is intangible無形 value -- you might威力 call it perceived感知 value,

00:42
you might威力 call it badge徽章 value, subjective主觀 value,

If you think about it, if you want to live生活 in a world世界 in the future未來

00:55
You can either live生活 in a world世界 which哪一個 is poorer,

00:57
which哪一個 people in general一般 don't like.
16
42000
2000
00:59
Or you can live生活 in a world世界 where actually其實 intangible無形 value
17
44000
3000
01:02
constitutes構成 a greater更大 part部分 of overall總體 value,
18

4000
01:06
that actually其實 intangible無形 value, in many許多 ways方法
19
51000
2000
01:08
is a very, very fine substitute替代
20
53000
2000

01:15
Here is one example. This is a train培養 which哪一個 goes from London倫敦 to Paris巴黎.
23
60000
3000
01:18
The question was given特定 to a bunch of engineers工程師,
24
63000
2000
01:20
about 15 years年份 ago, "How do we make the journey旅程 to Paris巴黎 better?"
25
65000
4000
01:24
And they came來了 up with a very good engineering工程 solution,
26
69000
2000
01:26
which哪一個 was to spend six billion十億 pounds英鎊
27
71000
2000

01:32
and knocking敲門 about 40 minutes分鐘 off a three-and-half-hour三和半小時 journey旅程 time.
30
77000
4000
01:36
Now, call me Mister先生 Picky挑剔. I'm just an ad廣告 man ...
31
81000
2000
01:38
... but it strikes罷工 me as a slightly unimaginative缺乏想像力 way of improving提高 a train培養 journey旅程
32
83000
4000
01:42
merely僅僅 to make it shorter.
33
87000
2000
01:44
Now what is the hedonic享樂 opportunity機會 cost成本
34
89000
3000
01:47
on spending開支 six billion十億 pounds英鎊 on those railway鐵路 tracks軌道?
35
92000
2000
01:49
Here is my naive幼稚 advertising廣告 man's男人的 suggestion建議.
36
94000
3000
01:52
What you should in fact事實 do is employ採用 all of the world's世界 top最佳 male
37
97000
2000
01:54
and female supermodels超級名模,
38

2000

02:02
(Laughter
41
107000
2000
02:04
(Applause
42
109000
1000
02:05
Now, you'll你會 still have about three billion十億 pounds英鎊 left in change更改,
43
110000
4000
02:09
and people will ask for the trains火車 to be slowed放緩 down.
44
114000
3000
02:12
(Laughter
45
117000
1000
02:13
Now, here is another另一個 naive幼稚 advertising廣告 man's男人的 question again.
46
118000
4000
02:17
And this shows節目 that engineers工程師,
47
122000
2000
02:19
medical people, scientific科學 people,
48
124000
2000
02:21
have an obsession困擾 with solving the problems問題 of reality現實,
49
126000
3000
02:24
when actually其實 most problems問題, once一旦 you reach達到 a basic基本 level水平 of wealth財富
50
129000
3000
02:27
in society社會, most problems問題 are actually其實 problems問題 of perception知覺.
51
132000
3000
02:30
So I'll ask you another另一個 question.
52
135000
2000
02:32
What on earth地球 is wrong錯誤 with placebos安慰劑?
53
137000
2000
02:34
They seem似乎 fantastic奇妙 to me. They cost成本 very little to develop發展.
54
139000
2000
02:36
They work extraordinarily異常 well.
55
141000
3000
02:39
They have no side effects效果,
56
144000
2000
02:41
or if they do, they're imaginary假想, so you can safely安然 ignore忽視 them.
57
146000
2000
02:43
(Laughter
58
148000
2000
02:45
So I was discussing討論 this. And I actually其實 went to the Marginal邊緣 Revolution革命 blog博客
59
150000
2000
02:47
by Tyler泰勒 Cowen考恩. I don't know if anybody任何人 knows知道 it.
60
152000
2000
02:49
Someone有人 was actually其實 suggesting提示 that you can take this concept概念 further進一步,
61
154000
3000
02:54
The point is that education教育 doesn't actually其實 work by teaching教學 you things.
63
159000
4000
02:58
It actually其實 works作品 by giving you the impression印象
64
163000
2000
03:00
that you've had a very good education教育, which哪一個 gives you an insane sense
65
165000
2000
03:04
which哪一個 then makes品牌 you very, very successful成功 in later後來 life.
67
169000
3000
03:07
So, welcome歡迎 to Oxford牛津, ladies女士們 and gentlemen紳士.
68
172000
3000
03:10
(Laughter
69
175000
2000
03:12
(Applause
70
177000
1000
03:13
But, actually其實, the point of placebo安慰劑 education教育 is interesting有趣.
71
178000
3000
03:16
How many許多 problems問題 of life can be solved解決了
72
181000
2000
03:18
actually其實 by tinkering修修補補 with perception知覺,
73
183000
2000
03:20
rather than that tedious乏味, hardworking用功 and messy business商業
74
185000
2000
03:22
of actually其實 trying to change更改 reality現實?
75
187000
3000
03:25
Here's這裡的 a great example from history歷史. I've heard聽說 this attributed由於 to several一些 other kings國王,
76
190000
3000
03:28
but doing a bit of historical歷史的 research研究,
77
193000
2000
03:30
it seems似乎 to be Fredrick弗雷德里克 the Great.
78
195000
2000
03:32
Fredrick弗雷德里克 the Great of Prussia普魯士 was very, very keen敏銳
79
197000
2000
03:34
for the Germans德國 to adopt採用 the potato土豆 and to eat it,
80
199000
3000
03:37
because he realized實現 that if you had two sources來源 of carbohydrate醣類,
81
202000
2000
03:39
wheat小麥 and potatoes土豆, you get less price價錢 volatility揮發性 in bread麵包.
82
204000
4000
03:43
And you get a far lower降低 risk風險 of famine飢荒,
83
208000
2000
03:45
because you actually其實 had two crops作物 to fall秋季 back on, not one.
84
210000
2000
03:47
The only problem問題 is: potatoes土豆, if you think about it, look pretty漂亮 disgusting討厭.
85
212000
3000
03:50
And also, 18th century世紀 Prussians普魯士人 ate very, very few少數 vegetables蔬菜 --
86
215000
4000
03:54
rather like contemporary現代的 Scottish蘇格蘭的 people.
87
219000
2000
03:56
(Laughter
88
221000
2000
03:58
So, actually其實, he tried試著 making製造 it compulsory義務.
89
223000
3000
04:01
The Prussian普魯士 peasantry農民 said,
90
226000
2000
04:03
"We can't even get the dogs小狗 to eat these damn該死的 things.
91
228000
2000
04:05
They are absolutely絕對 disgusting討厭 and they're good for nothing."
92
230000
2000
04:07
There are even records記錄 of people being存在 executed執行
93
232000
2000
04:09
for refusing拒不 to grow增長 potatoes土豆.
94
234000
2000
04:11
So he tried試著 plan計劃 B.
95
236000
2000
04:13
He tried試著 the marketing營銷 solution, which哪一個 is he declared聲明 the potato土豆
96
238000
2000
04:15
as a royal王室的 vegetable蔬菜, and none沒有 but the royal王室的 family家庭 could consume消耗 it.
97
240000
3000
04:18
And he planted種植的 it in a royal王室的 potato土豆 patch補丁,
98
243000
2000
04:20
with guards衛士 who had instructions說明
99
245000
2000
04:22
to guard守衛 over it, night and day,
100
247000
2000
04:24
but with secret秘密 instructions說明 not to guard守衛 it very well.
101
249000
3000
04:27
(Laughter
102
252000
1000
04:28
Now, 18th century世紀 peasants農民 know that there is one
103
253000
2000
04:30
pretty漂亮 safe安全 rule規則 in life, which哪一個 is if something is worth價值 guarding守著,
104
255000
2000
04:32
it's worth價值 stealing偷竊行為.
105
257000
2000
04:34
Before long, there was a massive大規模的 underground地下
106
259000
2000
04:38
What he'd他會 effectively有效 doneDONE is he'd他會 re-branded重新命名 the potato土豆.
108
263000
4000
04:42
It was an absolute絕對 masterpiece傑作.
109
267000
2000
04:44
I told this story故事 and a gentleman紳士 from Turkey火雞 came來了 up to me and said,
110
269000
2000
04:46
"Very, very good marketer營銷, Fredrick弗雷德里克 the Great. But not a patch補丁 on Ataturk阿塔圖爾克."
111
271000
4000
04:52
was very keen敏銳 to discourage不鼓勵 the wearing穿著 of a veil面紗,
113
277000
2000
04:54
in Turkey火雞, to modernize現代化 it.
114
279000
2000
04:56
Now, boring無聊 people would have just simply只是 banned取締 the veil面紗.
115
281000
3000
04:59
But that would have ended結束 up with a lot of awful可怕 kickback回扣
116
284000
2000
05:01
and a hell地獄 of a lot of resistance抵抗性.
117
286000
2000
05:03
Ataturk阿塔圖爾克 was a lateral thinker思想家.
118
288000
2000
Ataturk
05:05
He made製作 it compulsory義務 for prostitutes妓女 to wear穿 the veil面紗.
119
290000
3000

11:18
The reason原因 is that the interface接口 fundamentally從根本上 determines確定
271
663000
2000
11:20
the behavior行為. Okay?
272
665000
2000
11:22
Now, marketing營銷 has doneDONE a very, very good job工作 of creating創建
273
667000
3000
11:25
opportunities機會 for impulse衝動 buying購買.
274
670000
2000
11:27
Yet然而 we've我們已經 never created創建 the opportunity機會 for impulse衝動 saving保存.
275
672000
4000
11:31
If you did this, more people would save保存 more.
276
676000

11:34
It's simply只是 a question of changing改變 the interface接口
277
679000
2000
11:36
by which哪一個 people make decisions決定,
278

11:38
and the very nature性質 of the decisions決定 changes變化.
279
683000
2000
11:40
Obviously明顯, I don't want people to do this,
280
685000
2000
11:42
because as an advertising廣告 man I tend趨向 to regard看待 saving保存 as just

But if anybody任何人 did want to do that,
284

3000
11:50
that's the kind of thing we need to be thinking思維 about, actually其實:
285
695000
3000
11:55
Now, I've got an example here from Canada
