ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rory Sutherland - Advertising guru
Rory Sutherland stands at the center of an advertising revolution in brand identities, designing cutting-edge, interactive campaigns that blur the line between ad and entertainment.

Why you should listen

From unlikely beginnings as a classics teacher to his current job as Vice Chairman of Ogilvy Group, Rory Sutherland has created his own brand of the Cinderella story. He joined Ogilvy & Mather's planning department in 1988, and became a junior copywriter, working on Microsoft's account in its pre-Windows days. An early fan of the Internet, he was among the first in the traditional ad world to see the potential in these relatively unknown technologies.

An immediate understanding of the possibilities of digital technology and the Internet powered Sutherland's meteoric rise. He continues to provide insight into advertising in the age of the Internet and social media through his blog at Campaign's Brand Republic site, his column "The Wiki Man" at The Spectator and his busy Twitter account.

00:43
a very interesting有趣 observation意見,
13
28000
2000
00:45
that actually其實 those strange奇怪 little signs跡象
14
30000
2000
00:47
that actually其實 flash "35" at you,

00:56
those are actually其實 more effective有效
19
41000
2000

01:01
which哪一個 come with the actual實際 threat威脅
21
46000
2000

01:05
So there seems似乎 to be a strange奇怪 disproportionality比例失調 at work,
23
50000
3000
01:08
I think, in many許多 areas of human人的 problem問題 solving,
24
53000
3000
01:11
particularly尤其 those which哪一個 involve涉及 human人的 psychology心理學,
25
56000
3000
01:14
which哪一個 is: The tendency趨勢
26
59000
2000
01:16
of the organization組織 or the institution機構
27
61000
2000
01:18
is to deploy部署 as much force as possible可能,
28
63000
3000
01:21
as much compulsion義務 as possible可能,
29
66000
2000
施加最大的壓力;
01:23
whereas actually其實, the tendency趨勢 of the person
30
68000
2000
01:25
is to be almost幾乎 influenced影響
31
70000
3000
01:28
in absolute絕對 reverse相反 proportion比例
32
73000
2000
01:30
to the amount of force being存在 applied應用的.
33
75000
3000
01:33
So there seems似乎 to be a complete完成 disconnect斷開 here.
34
78000
2000
01:35
So what I'm asking for is the creation創建 of a new job工作 title標題 --
35
80000
2000
01:37
I'll come to this a little later
36
82000
2000
01:39
and perhaps也許 the addition加成 of a new word
37
84000
2000
01:41
into the English英語 language語言.
38
86000
2000
01:43
Because it does seem似乎 to me that large organizations組織
39
88000
3000
01:46
including包含 government政府, which哪一個 is, of course課程, the largest最大 organization組織 of all,
40
91000
3000
01:49
have actually其實 become成為
41
94000
2000
01:53
with what actually其實 matters事項 to people.
43
98000
2000
01:55
Let me give you one example of this.
44
100000
2000
01:57
You may可能 remember記得 this as the AOL-Time美國在線 - 時代 Warner華納 merger合併, okay,
45
102000
3000
02:01
heralded預示 at the time as the largest最大
46
106000
2000
02:03
single deal合同 of all time.
47
108000
2000
02:05
It may可能 still be, for all I know.
48
110000
2000
02:07
Now, all of you in this room房間, in one form形成 or other,
49
112000
2000
02:09
are probably大概 customers顧客 of one or both
50
114000
2000
02:11
of those organizations組織 that merged合併的.
51
116000
2000
02:13
Just interested有興趣, did anybody任何人 notice注意 anything different不同
52
118000
3000
02:16
as a result結果 of this at all?
53
121000
2000
02:18
So unless除非 you happened發生 to be a shareholder股東
54
123000
2000
02:20
of one or the other organizations組織
55
125000
2000
02:22
or one of the dealmakers交易撮合者 or lawyers律師 involved參與 in the no-doubt毫無疑問 lucrative有利可圖 activity活動,
56
127000
3000
02:25
you're actually其實 engaging in a huge巨大 piece of activity活動
57
130000
3000
02:28
that meant意味著 absolutely絕對 bugger-all開溜,所有 to anybody任何人, okay?
58
133000
3000
02:32
By contrast對比, years年份 of marketing營銷 have taught me
59
137000
2000
02:34
that if you actually其實 want people to remember記得 you
60
139000
3000
02:37
and to appreciate欣賞 what you do,
61
142000
2000
02:39
the most potent有力的 things are actually其實 very, very small.
62
144000
3000
02:42
This is from Virgin處女 Atlantic大西洋 upper-class上層階級,
63
147000
2000
02:44
it's the cruet調味瓶 salt and pepper胡椒 set.
64
149000
2000
02:46
Quite相當 nice不錯 in itself本身, they're little, sort分類 of, airplane飛機 things.
65
151000
3000
02:49
What's really, really sweet is every一切 single person looking at these things
66
154000
3000
02:52
has exactly究竟 the same相同 mischievous惡作劇 thought,
67
157000
2000
02:54
which哪一個 is, "I reckon估計 I can heist搶劫 these."
68
159000
3000
02:57
However然而, you pick them up and underneath,
69
162000
2000
02:59
actually其實 engraved in the metal金屬, are the words,
70
164000
2000
03:04
(Laughter
72
169000
2000
03:06
Now, years年份 after
73
171000
2000
03:08
you remember記得 the strategic戰略 question
74
173000
2000
03:10
of whether是否 you're flying飛行 in a 777 or an Airbus空中客車公司,
75
175000
3000
03:13
you remember記得 those words and that experience經驗.
76
178000
3000
03:17
Similarly同樣, this is from a hotel旅館 in Stockholm斯德哥爾摩, the Lydmar萊德馬爾.
77
182000
2000
03:19
Has anybody任何人 stayed there?
78
184000
2000
03:21
It's the lift電梯, it's a series系列 of buttons鈕扣 in the lift電梯.
79
186000
3000
03:24
Nothing unusual異常 about that at all,
80
189000
3000
03:27
except that these are actually其實 not the buttons鈕扣 that take you to an individual個人 floor地板.
81
192000
3000
03:30
It starts啟動 with garage車庫 at the bottom底部, I suppose假設, appropriately適當,
82
195000
3000
最下面的按鈕是 「Garage(車庫)」,沒錯吧?
03:33
but it doesn't go up garage車庫, grand盛大 floor地板, mezzanine夾層, one, two, three, four.
83
198000
3000
03:36
It actually其實 says garage車庫, funk恐懼, rhythm韻律 and blues藍調.
84
201000
3000
03:40
You have a series系列 of buttons鈕扣. You actually其實 choose選擇 your lift電梯 music音樂.
85
205000
3000
03:44
My guess猜測 is that the cost成本 of installing安裝 this in the lift電梯
86
209000
3000
03:47
in the Lydmar萊德馬爾 Hotel旅館 in Stockholm斯德哥爾摩
87
212000
2000
03:49
is probably大概 500 to 1,000 pounds英鎊 max最大.
88
214000
3000
03:52
It's frankly坦率地說 more memorable難忘
89
217000
2000
03:54
than all those millions百萬 of hotels酒店 we've我們已經 all stayed at
90
219000
3000
03:57
that tell you that your room房間 has actually其實 been recently最近 renovated裝修
91
222000
3000
04:00
at a cost成本 of 500,000 dollars美元,
92
225000
2000
04:02
in order訂購 to make it resemble類似 every一切 other hotel旅館 room房間 you've ever stayed in
93
227000
3000
04:05
in the entire整個 course課程 of your life.
94
230000
3000
04:09
Now, these are trivial不重要的 marketing營銷 examples例子, I accept接受.
95
234000
3000
04:12
But I was at a TEDTED event事件 recently最近 and Esther以斯帖 Duflo迪弗洛,
96
237000
3000
Esther Duflo
04:15
probably大概 one of the leading領導 experts專家 in,
97
240000
2000
04:17
effectively有效, the eradication根除 of poverty貧窮 in the developing發展 world世界,
98
242000
2000
04:21
And she came來了 across橫過 a similar類似 example
100
246000
2000
04:23
of something that fascinated入迷 me
101
248000
2000
04:25
as being存在 something which哪一個, in a business商業 context上下文 or a government政府 context上下文,
102
250000
3000
04:28
would simply只是 be so trivial不重要的 a solution
103
253000
2000
04:30
as to seem似乎 embarrassing尷尬.
104
255000
2000
04:32
It was simply只是 to encourage鼓勵 the inoculation接種 of children孩子
105
257000
3000
04:35
by, not only making製造 it a social社會 event事件 --
106

04:37
I think good use of behavioral行為的 economics經濟學 in that,
107
262000
2000
04:39
if you turn up with several一些 other mothers母親

109
266000
2000
04:43
your sense of confidence置信度 is much greater更大 than if you turn up alone單獨.
110
268000
3000
04:46
But secondly其次, to incentivize激勵 that inoculation接種
111
271000
2000
04:48
by giving a kilo公斤 of lentils扁豆 to everybody每個人 who participated參加.
112
273000
3000
04:53
It's a tiny, tiny thing.
113
278000
2000
04:55
If you're a senior前輩 person at UNESCO聯合國教科文組織

05:18
And yet然而, what behavioral行為的 economics經濟學 shows節目 time after time after time
123
303000
3000
05:21
is in human人的 behavioral行為的 and behavioral行為的 change更改
124
306000
2000
05:23
there's a very, very strong強大 disproportionality比例失調 at work,
125
308000
3000
05:26
that actually其實 what changes變化 our behavior行為
126
311000
3000
05:29
and what changes變化 our attitude態度 to things
127
314000
2000
05:31
is not actually其實 proportionate均衡 to the degree
128
316000
2000
05:33
of expense費用 entailedentailed,
129
318000
2000
05:35
or the degree of force that's applied應用的.
130
320000
3000
05:38
But everything about institutions機構
131
323000
2000

05:42
with that disproportionality比例失調.
133
327000
2000
05:44
So what happens發生 in an institution機構
134
329000
2000
05:46
is the very person who has the power功率 to solve解決 the problem問題
135
331000
3000
05:49
also has a very, very large budget預算.
136
334000
2000
05:51
And once一旦 you have a very, very large budget預算,
137
336000
2000
05:53
you actually其實 look for expensive昂貴 things to spend it on.
138
338000
3000
05:57
What is completely全然 lacking不足 is a class of people
139
342000
2000
05:59
who have immense巨大 amounts of power功率, but no money at all.
140
344000

2000
06:04
It's those people I'd quite相當 like to create創建
142
349000
2000
06:06
in the world世界 going forward前鋒.
143
351000
2000
06:08
Now, here's這裡的 another另一個 thing that happens發生,
144
353000
2000
06:10
which哪一個 is what I call sometimes有時 "Terminal終奌站 5 syndrome綜合徵,"
145
355000
2000
06:12
which哪一個 is that big, expensive昂貴 things
146
357000
2000
06:17
and they're great, and Terminal終奌站 5 is absolutely絕對 magnificent華麗的,
148
362000
3000
06:20
until直到 you get down to the small detail詳情, the usability可用性,
149
365000
2000
06:22
which哪一個 is the signage標牌,
150
367000
2000
06:24
which哪一個 is catastrophic災難性的.
151
369000
2000
06:26
You come out of "Arrive到達" at the airport飛機場, and you follow跟隨
152
371000
2000
06:28
a big yellow黃色 sign標誌 that says "Trains火車" and it's in front面前 of you.
153
373000
3000
06:31
So you walk步行 for another另一個 hundred yards,
154
376000
2000
06:35
that might威力 courteously禮貌 be yellow黃色, in front面前 of you and saying "Trains火車."
156
380000
3000
06:38
No, no, no, the next下一個 one is actually其實 blue藍色, to your left,
157
383000
2000
06:40
and says "Heathrow希思羅機場 Express表現."
158
385000
2000
06:42
I mean, it could almost幾乎 be rather like that scene現場 from the film電影 "Airplane飛機."
159
387000
3000
06:45
A yellow黃色 sign標誌? That's exactly究竟 what they'll他們會 be expecting期待.
160
390000
3000
06:48
Actually其實, what happens發生 in the world世界 increasingly日益 --
161
393000
2000
06:50
now, all credit信用 to the British英國的 Airport飛機場 Authority權威.
162
395000
2000
06:52
I spoke about this before,
163
397000
2000
06:54
and a brilliant輝煌 person got in touch觸摸 with me and said, "Okay, what can you do?"
164
399000
3000
06:57
So I did come up with five suggestions建議, which哪一個 they are actually其實 actioningactioning.
165
402000
3000
07:00
One of them also being存在,
166
405000
2000
07:02
although雖然 logically邏輯 it's quite相當 a good idea理念
167
407000
2000
07:04
to have a lift電梯 with no up and down button按鍵 in it,
168
409000
2000
07:06
if it only serves供應 two floors地板,
169
411000
2000
07:08
it's actually其實 bloody血腥 terrifying可怕的, okay?
170
413000
3000
07:11
Because when the door closes關閉
171
416000
2000
07:13
and there's nothing for you to do,
172
418000
2000
07:15
you've actually其實 just stepped加強 into a Hammer錘子 film電影.
173
420000
2000
07:17
(Laughter
174
422000
2000
07:19
So these questions問題 ... what is happening事件 in the world世界
175
424000
2000
07:21
is the big stuff東東, actually其實,
176
426000
2000
07:23
is doneDONE magnificently輝煌 well.
177
428000
2000
07:25
But the small stuff東東, what you might威力 call the user用戶 interface接口,
178
430000
3000
07:28
is doneDONE spectacularly壯觀 badly.
179
433000
2000
07:30
But also, there seems似乎 to be a complete完成 sort分類 of gridlock僵局
180
435000
3000
07:33
in terms條款 of solving these small solutions解決方案.
181
438000
3000
07:36
Because the people who can actually其實 solve解決 them
182
441000
2000
07:38
actually其實 are too powerful強大 and too preoccupied斤斤計較
183
443000
2000
07:40
with something they think of as "strategy戰略" to actually其實 solve解決 them.
184
445000
3000
07:43
I tried試著 this exercise行使 recently最近, talking about banking銀行業.
185
448000
2000
07:45
They said, "Can we do an advertising廣告 campaign運動?
186
450000
2000
07:47
What can we do and encourage鼓勵 more online線上 banking銀行業?"
187
452000
3000
07:50
I said, "It's really, really easy簡單."
188
455000
2000
07:52
I said, "When people login登錄 to their online線上 bank銀行
189
457000
2000
07:54
there are lots and lots of things they'd他們會 probably大概 quite相當 like to look at.
190
459000
3000
07:57
The last thing in the world世界 you ever want to see is your balance平衡."
191
462000
3000
08:01
I've got friends朋友 who actually其實
192
466000
2000
08:03
never use their own擁有 bank銀行 cash現金 machines
193
468000
2000
08:05
because there's the risk風險 that it might威力 display顯示
194
470000
2000
08:07
their balance平衡 on the screen屏幕.
195
472000
2000
08:09
Why would you willingly甘心 expose暴露 yourself你自己 to bad news新聞?
196
474000
3000
08:12
Okay, you simply只是 wouldn't不會.
197
477000
2000
08:14
I said, "If you make, actually其實, 'Tell'告訴 me my balance平衡.'
198
479000
2000
08:16
If you make that an option選項 rather than the default默認,
199
481000
3000
08:19
you'll你會 find twice兩次 as many許多 people log日誌 on to online線上 banking銀行業,
200
484000
3000
08:22
and they do it three times as often經常."
201
487000
2000
08:24
Let's face面對 it, most of us -- how many許多 of you
202
489000
2000
08:26
actually其實 check your balance平衡 before you remove去掉 cash現金 from a cash現金 machine?
203
491000
3000
08:30
And you're pretty漂亮 rich豐富 by the standards標準 of the world世界 at large.
204
495000
3000
08:33
Now, interesting有趣 that no single person does that,
205
498000
2000
08:35
or at least最小 can admit承認 to being存在 so anal肛門 as to do it.
206
500000
3000
08:39
But what's interesting有趣 about that suggestion建議
207
504000
2000
08:41
was that, to implement實行 that suggestion建議 wouldn't不會 cost成本 10 million百萬 pounds英鎊;
208
506000
3000
08:44
it wouldn't不會 involve涉及 large amounts of expenditure支出;
209
509000
2000
08:46
it would actually其實 cost成本 about 50 quid.
210
511000
2000
08:48
And yet然而, it never happens發生.
211
513000
2000
08:50
Because there's a fundamental基本的 disconnect斷開, as I said,
212
515000
3000
08:53
that actually其實, the people with the power功率
213
518000
2000
08:55
want to do big expensive昂貴 things.
214
520000
2000
08:57
And there's to some extent程度 a big strategy戰略 myth神話
215
522000
2000
08:59
that's prevalent流行 in business商業 now.
216
524000
2000
09:01
And if you think about it, it's very, very important重要
217
526000
2000
09:03
that the strategy戰略 myth神話 is maintained保持.
218
528000
2000
09:05
Because, if the board of directors董事 convince說服 everybody每個人
219
530000
3000
09:08
that the success成功 of any organization組織
220
533000
2000
09:10
is almost幾乎 entirely完全 dependent依賴的 on the decisions決定 made製作 by the board of directors董事,
221
535000
3000
09:13
it makes品牌 the disparity差距 in salaries工資
222
538000
3000
09:16
slightly more justifiable合理的
223
541000
2000
09:18
than if you actually其實 acknowledge確認 that quite相當 a lot of the credit信用 for a company's公司 success成功
224
543000
3000
09:23
in small pieces of tactical戰術 activity活動.
226
548000
2000
09:26
But what is happening事件 is that effectively有效 --
227
551000
2000
09:28
and the invention發明 of the spreadsheet電子表格 hasn't有沒有 helped幫助 this;
228
553000
2000
09:30
lots of things haven't沒有 helped幫助 this --
229
555000
2000
09:32
business商業 and government政府 suffers患有 from a kind of physics物理 envy羨慕.
230
557000
3000
09:35
It wants the world世界 to be the kind of place地點 where
231
560000
3000
09:38
the input輸入 and the change更改 are proportionate均衡.
232
563000
3000
09:41
It's a kind of mechanistic機械 world世界
233
566000
2000
09:43
that we'd星期三 all love to live生活 in
234
568000
2000
09:45
where, effectively有效, it sits坐鎮 very nicely很好 on spreadsheets電子表格,
235
570000
3000
09:48
everything is numerically數字 expressible表達,
236
573000
2000
09:50
and the amount you spend on something is proportionate均衡
237
575000
3000
09:53
to the scale規模 of your success成功.
238
578000
2000
09:55
That's the world世界 people actually其實 want.
239
580000
2000
09:57
In truth真相, we do live生活 in a world世界 that science科學 can understand理解.
240
582000
2000
而實際上,我們也生活在一個以科學為基礎的世界;
09:59
Unfortunately不幸, the science科學 is probably大概 closer接近 to being存在 climatology氣候
241
584000
3000
10:02
in that in many許多 cases,
242
587000
2000
10:04
very, very small changes變化
243
589000
2000
10:06
can have disproportionately不成比例 huge巨大 effects效果,
244
591000
2000
10:08
and equally一樣, vast廣大 areas of activity活動, enormous巨大 mergers兼併,
245
593000
3000
10:11
can actually其實 accomplish完成 absolutely絕對 bugger-all開溜,所有.
246
596000
3000
10:15
But it's very, very uncomfortable不舒服 for us
247
600000
2000
10:17
to actually其實 acknowledge確認 that we're living活的 in such這樣 a world世界.
248
602000
3000
10:20
But what I'm saying is we could just make things
249
605000
2000
10:22
a little bit better for ourselves我們自己
250
607000
2000
10:24
if we looked看著 at it in this very simple簡單 four-way四向 approach途徑.
251
609000
3000
10:28
That is actually其實 strategy戰略, and I'm not denying否認 that strategy戰略 has a role角色.
252
613000
3000
10:31
You know, there are cases where you spend quite相當 a lot of money
253
616000
2000
10:33
and you accomplish完成 quite相當 a lot.
254
618000
2000
10:35
And I'd be wrong錯誤 to disDIS that completely全然.
255
620000
3000
10:38
Moving移動 over, we come, of course課程, to consultancy顧問.
256
623000
2000
10:40
(Laughter
257
625000
3000
10:44
I thought it was very indecent非禮 of Accenture埃森哲
258
629000
2000
10:46
to ditch Tiger Woods樹木 in such這樣
259
631000
2000
棄 Tiger Woods 不顧,
10:48
a sort分類 of hurried慌忙 and hasty way.
260
633000
2000
10:50
I mean, Tiger surely一定 was actually其實 obeying服從 the Accenture埃森哲 model模型.
261
635000
3000
10:53
He developed發達 an interesting有趣 outsourcing外包 model模型 for sexual有性 services服務,
262
638000
3000
10:56
(Laughter
263
641000
2000
10:58
no longer tied to a single monopoly壟斷 provider提供商,
264
643000
3000
11:01
in many許多 cases, sourcing採購 things locally本地,
265
646000
3000
11:04
and of course課程, the ability能力 to have between之間 one and three girls女孩 delivered交付 at any time
266
649000
3000
11:07
led for better load-balancing負載均衡.
267
652000
3000
11:10
So what Accenture埃森哲 suddenly突然 found發現 so unattractive沒有吸引力 about that, I'm not sure.
268
655000
3000
11:13
Then there are other things that don't cost成本 much and achieve實現 absolutely絕對 nothing.
269
658000
3000
11:16
That's called trivia
270
661000
2000
11:18
But there's a fourth第四 thing.
271
663000
2000
11:20
And the fundamental基本的 problem問題 is we don't actually其實 have a word for this stuff東東.
272
665000
3000
11:23
We don't know what to call it.
273
668000
2000
11:25
And actually其實 we don't spend nearly幾乎 enough足夠 money
274
670000
3000
11:28
looking for those things,
275
673000
2000
11:30
looking for those tiny things that may可能 or may可能 not work,
276
675000
3000
11:33
but which哪一個, if they do work,
277
678000
2000
11:35
can have a success成功 absolutely絕對 out of proportion比例
278
680000
2000
11:37
to their expense費用, their efforts努力
279
682000
2000
11:39
and the disruption瓦解 they cause原因.
280
684000
2000
11:41
So the first thing I'd like
281
686000
2000
11:43
is a competition競爭 -- to anybody任何人 watching觀看 this as a film電影 --

and business商業 actually其實 had Chief首席 Detail詳情 Officers長官,
299
726000
2000
12:23
then that fourth第四 quadrant象限,

12:25
