Kad bi vaš život bio knjiga,
00:06
and you were the author,

a vi njen autor,
00:10
how would you want your story to go?

kako biste željeli
da se vaša priča razvija?
da se vaša priča razvija?

That's the question
that changed my life forever.

To je pitanje koje mi je
zauvijek promijenilo život.
zauvijek promijenilo život.

Growing up in the hot Last Vegas desert,
4
15002
2998
Odrastajući u vrućoj pustinji Las Vegasa,
00:21
all I wanted was to be free.
5
18000
2992
sve što sam željela je da budem slobodna.
00:24
I would daydream about
traveling the world,
traveling the world,
6
21000
4000
Sanjarila bih o putovanjima po svijetu,
00:28
living in a place where it snowed,
7
25000
3000
da živim u mjestu gdje sniježi,
00:31
and I would picture all of the stories
8
28000
3000
i zamišljala bih sve te priče
00:34
that I would go on to tell.
9
31000
3000
koje bih u budućnosti ispričala.
00:37
At the age of 19,

Kad sam imala 19 godina,
00:39
the day after I graduated high school,

završila srednju školu,

00:42
I moved to a place where it snowed
12
39000
3000
zaista sam se preselila
na mjesto gdje sniježi
na mjesto gdje sniježi
00:45
and I became a massage therapist.
13
42000
2000
i postala sam maser-terapeut.
00:47
With this job all I needed were my hands
14
44000

00:56
For the first time in my life,

2755
Prvi put u živoru
00:59
I felt free, independent
18
56000

osjećala sam se slobodno, samostalno

ranije s posla kući,

osjećala sam se kao da su me skrpali
02:01
like a patchwork doll.
38
118682
3326
poput nekakve krpene lutke
sastavljene od raznih komada tkanine.
sastavljene od raznih komada tkanine.
02:05
I thought the worst was over
39
122008
1992
Mislila sam da je najgore iza mene
02:07
until weeks later when I saw my new legs
40
124607
2393
sve dok tjednima kasnije
nisam ugledala svoje noge
nisam ugledala svoje noge
02:10
for the first time.
41
127000
2000
po prvi put.
02:12
The calves were bulky blocks of metal
42
129000
4790
Listovi su bili glomazni blokovi metala
02:16
with pipes bolted together for the ankles
43
133792
3738
sa cijevima spojenim vijcima
koje su služile kao zglobovi,
koje su služile kao zglobovi,
02:20
and a yellow rubber foot
44
137530
2481
i žuto gumeno stopalo
02:23
with a raised rubber line
from the toe to the ankle
from the toe to the ankle
45
140011
3960
s podignutom gumenom linijom
od prsta do zgloba
od prsta do zgloba
02:26
to look like a vein.
46
143971
2029
kako bi izgledala kao vena.
02:29
I didn't know what to expect,
47
146000
3000
Nisam znala što očekivati,
02:32
but I wasn't expecting that.
48
149000
3000
ali nisam očekivala to.
02:35
With my mom by my side
49
152000
3000
Uz mamu
02:38
and tears streaming down our faces,
50
155000
5716
i uz suze koje su se
slijevale niz naša lica,
slijevale niz naša lica,
02:43
I strapped on these chunky legs
51
160716
3284
privezala sam te zdepaste noge
02:47
and I stood up.
52
164000
2997
i ustala .
02:50
They were so painful and so confining
53
167000
4280
Toliko su mi nanosile bol
i toliko su me sputavale
i toliko su me sputavale
02:54
that all I could think was,
54
171280
2730
da je jedino o čemu sam mogla
razmišljati bilo to
razmišljati bilo to
02:57
how am I ever going to travel the world
55
174010
2700
kako ću ikada moći putovati svijetom
02:59
in these things?
56
176710
1290
u ovome?
03:01
How was I ever going to live
57
178000
2000
Kako ću ikada moći živjeti
03:03
the life full of adventure and stories,
58
180000
2728
život pun pustolovina i priča
03:05
as I always wanted?
59
182728
2272
koji sam oduvijek željela?
03:08
And how was I going to snowboard again?
60
185000
4844
I kako ću ponovno snowboardati?
03:12
That day, I went home, I crawled into bed
61
189844
3156
Tog dana otišla sam kući,
uvukla se u krevet
uvukla se u krevet
03:16
and this is what my life looked like
62
193000
2000
i tako je moj život izgledao
03:18
for the next few months:
63
195000
2440
nekoliko narednih mjeseci:
03:20
me passed out, escaping from reality,
64
197441
4199
u nesvjestici, u bijegu od stvarnosti,
03:24
with my legs resting by my side.
65
201640
4373
uz noge odložene pokraj mene.
03:29
I was absolutely physically
and emotionally broken.
and emotionally broken.
66
206013
8277
Bila sam fizički i emocionalno
potpuno slomljena.
potpuno slomljena.
03:37
But I knew that in order to move forward,
67
214290
3710
Ali znala sam,
ako želim ići naprijed,
ako želim ići naprijed,
03:41
I had to let go of the old Amy
68
218000
5230
moram pustiti staru Amy
03:46
and learn to embrace the new Amy.
69
223230
5790
i naučiti prihvatiti novu Amy.
03:52
And that is when it dawned on me
70
229020
3330
I tada mi je svanulo
03:55
that I didn't have to be five-foot-five anymore.
71
232350
3730
da više ne moram biti samo 165 cm visoka.
03:59
I could be as tall as I wanted!
72
236080
2920
Mogu biti visoka koliko želim!
04:02
(Laughter) (Applause)
73
239000
5680
(Smijeh) (Pljesak)
04:07
Or as short as I wanted,
depending on who I was dating.
depending on who I was dating.
74
244680
3331
Ili niska koliko želim,
ovisno o tome s kime hodam.
ovisno o tome s kime hodam.
04:11
(Laughter)
75
248011
1989
(Smijeh)
04:13
And if I snowboarded again,
76
250000
2570
I ako ponovno počnem snowboardati,
04:15
my feet aren't going to get cold.
77
252570
1860
neće mi biti hladno nogama.
04:17
(Laughter)
78
254430
1784
(Smijeh)
04:19
And best of all, I thought,
79
256214
2236
I, mislila sam, što je najbolje od svega,
04:21
I can make my feet the size
of all the shoes
of all the shoes
80
258450
3726
mogu mijenjati veličinu svojih stopala
prema veličini cipela
prema veličini cipela
04:25
that are on the sales rack.
(Laughter)
(Laughter)
81
262176
2499
koje se nalaze na rasprodaji.
(Smijeh)
(Smijeh)
04:27
And I did!
82
264676
1914
I to sam i napravila!
04:29
So there were benefits here.
83
266590
2410
Tako da je bilo i prednosti.
04:32
It was this moment that I asked myself
84
269000
2665
Tada sam si postavila
04:34
that life-defining question:
85
271665
2925
pitanje koje mi je odredilo cijeli život:
04:37
If my life were a book
86
274592
2340
Da je moj život knjiga
04:39
and I were the author,
87
276932
3218
i da sam ja njen autor,
04:43
how would I want the story to go?
88
280150
2810
kako bih htjela da se ta priča razvija?
04:45
And I began to daydream.
89
282960
2490
I počela sam sanjariti.
04:48
I daydreamed like I did as a little girl
90
285450
2790
Sanjarila sam kao onda
kad sam bila mala djevojčica
kad sam bila mala djevojčica
04:51
and I imagined myself
91
288240
2760
i vidjela sam se
04:54
walking gracefully,
92
291000
3000
kako graciozno hodam,
04:57
helping other people through my journey
93
294000
2441
kako pomažem drugim ljudima na svom putu
04:59
and snowboarding again.
94
296441
2559
i kako ponovno snowboardam.
05:02
And I didn't just see myself
95
299000
2000
I nisam se vidjela
05:04
carving down a mountain of powder,
96
301000
2000
kako se usijecam niz planinu praha,
05:06
I could actually feel it.
97
303000
3000
već sam mogla sve uistinu osjetiti.
05:09
I could feel the wind against my face
98
306000
3000
Mogla sam osjetiti vjetar na svom licu
05:12
and the beat of my racing heart
99
309000
3000
i otkucaje svog ubrzanog srca
05:15
as if it were happening
in that very moment.
in that very moment.
100
312000
5010
kao da se to događa
upravo u tom trenutku.
upravo u tom trenutku.
05:20
And that is when a new chapter
in my life began.
in my life began.
101
317010
6390
I tada je započelo novo
poglavlje u mom životu.
poglavlje u mom životu.
05:26
Four months later
I was back up on a snowboard,
I was back up on a snowboard,
102
323400
3430
Četiri mjeseca kasnije bila sam
ponovno na snowboardu,
ponovno na snowboardu,
05:29
although things didn't go
quite as expected:
quite as expected:
103
326830
2590
iako nije sve išlo kako sam očekivala:
05:32
My knees and my ankles wouldn't bend
104
329420
2580
Koljena i zglobovi se nisu savijali
05:35
and at one point I traumatized
all the skiers on the chair lift
all the skiers on the chair lift
105
332000
4710
a jednom sam čak traumatizirala
sve skijaše na ski liftu
sve skijaše na ski liftu
05:39
when I fell and my legs,
106
336710
4360
kada sam pala i kada su moje noge
05:44
still attached to my snowboard —
107
341070
1930
još uvijek zakačene za snowboard —
05:46
(Laughter) —
108
343000
4000
(Smijeh) —
05:50
went flying down the mountain,
109
347000
3000
nastavile letjeti niz planinu
05:53
and I was on top of the mountain still.
110
350000
3000
dok sam ja još uvijek
bila na vrhu planine.
bila na vrhu planine.
05:56
I was so shocked,
111
353000
2000
Bila sam toliko šokirana,
05:58
I was just as shocked as everybody else,
and I was so discouraged,
and I was so discouraged,
112
355000
4308
bila sam šokirana poput svih ostalih,
i bila sam potpuno obeshrabrena,
i bila sam potpuno obeshrabrena,
06:02
but I knew that if I could find the right pair of feet
113
359308
3692
ali znala sam da ću,
ako nađem pravi par stopala,
ako nađem pravi par stopala,
06:06
that I would be able to do this again.
114
363000
2000
biti u stanju sve to ponovno raditi.
06:08
And this is when I learned
that our borders
that our borders
115
365000
3000
I tada sam naučila da nam naše granice
06:11
and our obstacles
can only do two things:
can only do two things:
116
368000
4028
i naše prepreke mogu učiniti
samo dvije stvari:
samo dvije stvari:
06:15
one, stop us in our tracks
117
372028
2972
jedan, zaustaviti nas na našem putu
06:18
or two, force us to get creative.
118
375000
4190
ili dva, prisiliti nas da
postanemo kreativni.
postanemo kreativni.
06:22
I did a year of research,
still couldn't figure out
still couldn't figure out
119
379190
2410
Godinu dana sam istraživala
i nisam mogla dokučiti
i nisam mogla dokučiti
06:24
what kind of legs to use,
120
381600
1400
kakvu vrstu nogu koristiti,
06:26
couldn't find any resources
that could help me.
that could help me.
121
383000
2287
nisam mogla pronaći izvore
koji bi mi mogli pomoći.
koji bi mi mogli pomoći.
06:28
So I decided to make a pair myself.
122
385287
3293
Pa sam odlučila
sama napraviti par nogu.
sama napraviti par nogu.
06:31
My leg maker and I
put random parts together
put random parts together
123
388580
3057
Moj prostetičar i ja smo
nasumično sastavljali dijelove
nasumično sastavljali dijelove
06:34
and we made a pair of feet
that I could snowboard in.
that I could snowboard in.
124
391637
3265
i napravili par nogu
s kojim sam mogla snowboardati.
s kojim sam mogla snowboardati.
06:37
As you can see,
125
394902
2098
Kao što možete vidjeti,
06:40
rusted bolts, rubber,
wood and neon pink duct tape.
wood and neon pink duct tape.
126
397000
7000
zahrđali vijci, guma, drvo i
neonsko roza ljepljiva traka.
neonsko roza ljepljiva traka.
06:47
And yes, I can change my toenail polish.
127
404000
3000
I da, mogu mijenjati lak na nogama.
06:50
It was these legs
128
407000
2000
Ove noge
06:52
and the best 21st birthday gift
I could ever receive —
I could ever receive —
129
409000
3965
i najbolji dar koji sam mogla
dobiti za 21. rođendan —
dobiti za 21. rođendan —
06:55
a new kidney from my dad —
130
412965
2487
novi bubreg od oca —
06:58
that allowed me to follow my dreams again.
131
415452
2548
omogućili su mi da
ponovno slijedim svoje snove.
ponovno slijedim svoje snove.
07:01
I started snowboarding,
132
418000
2000
Počela sam snowboardati,
07:03
then I went back to work,
then I went back to school.
then I went back to school.
133
420000
2916
vratila sam se na posao,
vratila sam se u školu.
vratila sam se u školu.
07:05
Then in 2005 I cofounded
a nonprofit organization
a nonprofit organization
134
422916
3689
Onda sam 2005. godine suosnovala
neprofitnu organizaciju
neprofitnu organizaciju
07:09
for youth and young adults
with physical disabilities

From there, I had the opportunity to go to South Africa,

Otada sam imala
priliku ići u Južnu Afriku,

I won two back-to-back

07:46
Eleven years ago, when I lost my legs,
146
463759
3241
Prije jedanaest godina,
kada sam izgubila obje noge,
kada sam izgubila obje noge,
07:50
I had no idea what to expect.
147
467000
3440
nisam znala što očekivati.
07:53
But if you ask me today,
148
470449
1551
Ali kada biste me pitali danas,
07:55
if I would ever want to
change my situation,
change my situation,
149
472000
2000
da li bih ikada htjela promijeniti
svoju situaciju,
svoju situaciju,
07:57
I would have to say no.
150
474000
3000
rekla bih ne.
08:00
Because my legs haven't disabled me,
151
477000
2000
Jer me moje noge nisu onesposobile,
08:02
if anything they've enabled me.
152
479000
2540
već su me osposobile.
08:04
They've forced me to rely on my imagination
153
481540
3460
Prisilile su me da se
oslanjam na svoju maštu
oslanjam na svoju maštu
08:08
and to believe in the possibilities,
154
485000
3000
i da vjerujem u mogućnosti,
08:11
and that's why I believe
155
488000
1780
i zato vjerujem
08:12
that our imaginations can be used as tools
156
489780
2220
da se naša mašta može koristiti kao alat
08:15
for breaking through borders,
157
492000
2000
za probijanje granica,
08:17
because in our minds,
we can do anything
we can do anything
158
494000
3000
jer u svojim glavama
možemo učiniti sve
možemo učiniti sve
08:20
and we can be anything.
159
497000
3000
i možemo biti sve.
08:23
It's believing in those dreams
160
500000
2000
Upravo vjera u te snove
08:25
and facing our fears head-on
161
502000
3000
i izravno suočavanje s našim strahovima
08:28
that allows us to live our lives
162
505000
2570
omogućava nam da živimo svoje živote
08:30
beyond our limits.
163
507570
2920
preko naših ograničenja.
08:33
And although today is about
innovation without borders,
innovation without borders,
164
510490
3370
I iako je današnjica obilježena
inovacijom bez granica,
inovacijom bez granica,
08:36
I have to say that in my life,
165
513860
3140
moram reći da je u mom životu
08:40
innovation has only been possible
166
517000
2428
inovacija bila moguća
08:42
because of my borders.
167
519428
3172
upravo zbog mojih granica.
08:45
I've learned that borders are where the actual ends,
168
522600
4405
Naučila sam da su granice mjesta
gdje 'stvarno' završava
gdje 'stvarno' završava
08:50
but also where the imagination
169
527005
2995
ali gdje mašta
08:53
and the story begins.
170
530000
2930
i priča počinju.
08:55
So the thought that I would like
to challenge you with today
to challenge you with today
171
532930
2986
I misao kojom bih vas htjela potaknuti
na razmišljanje danas
na razmišljanje danas
08:58
is that maybe instead of looking at
our challenges and our limitations
our challenges and our limitations
172
535916
4078
jest ta da umjesto na svoje izazove i
svoja ograničenja gledamo kao na nešto
svoja ograničenja gledamo kao na nešto
09:03
as something negative or bad,
173
540000
3000
negativno ili loše,
09:06
we can begin to look at them as blessings,
174
543000
3000
možemo početi gledati
na njih kao na blagoslov,
na njih kao na blagoslov,
09:09
magnificent gifts that can be used
to ignite our imaginations
to ignite our imaginations
175
546000
5525
veličanstvene darove koji se mogu
koristiti da zapale našu maštu
koristiti da zapale našu maštu
09:14
and help us go further
than we ever knew we could go.
than we ever knew we could go.
176
551525
5490
i pomognu nam da odemo dalje
nego što smo ikada znali da možemo ići.
nego što smo ikada znali da možemo ići.
09:20
It's not about breaking down borders.
177
557027
3973
Tu se ne radi o rušenju granica.
09:24
It's about pushing off of them
178
561000
3330
Radi se o odguravanju o te granice
09:27
and seeing what amazing places
179
564340
2660
i uviđavanju koja nam sva predivna mjesta
09:30
they might bring us.
180
567000
2000
one mogu donijeti.
09:32
Thank you.
181
569000

Hvala.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Amy Purdy - Pro snowboarderAmy Purdy became a professional snowboarder despite losing both her legs to meningitis. She encourages us to take control of our lives, and our limits.
Why you should listen
After bacterial meningitis took her legs, Amy Purdy struggled with depression, and only beat it when she learned to accept her new reality, but not any limitations. After being unable to find prosthetics that would allow her to snowboard, she built her own. Today, she is a world champion female adaptive snowboarder. In 2005, she co-founded Adaptive Action Sports, a non-profit dedicated to introducing people with physical challenges to action sports.
