00:22
lies a community called Vila Cruzeiro,
4
10297
3062
00:25
and roughly 60,000 people live there.
5
13359
3060
00:28
Now, the people here in Rio mostly know
6
16419
2103
00:30
Vila Cruzeiro from the news,
7
18522
1875
00:32
and unfortunately, news
from Vila Cruzeiro often
from Vila Cruzeiro often
8
20397
3637
00:36
is not good news.
9
24034
2432
00:38
But Vila Cruzeiro is also the place
10
26466
2901
00:41
where our story begins.
11
29367
2025
00:43
Jeroen Koolhaas: Ten years
ago, we first came to Rio
ago, we first came to Rio
12
31392
2773
00:46
to shoot a documentary
about life in the favelas.
about life in the favelas.
13
34165
3627
00:49
Now, we learned that favelas
are informal communities.
are informal communities.
14
37792
2902
00:52
They emerged over the years
15
40694
1217
00:54
when immigrants from the countryside
16
41911
1860
00:55
came to the cities looking for work,
17
43771
2012
00:57
like cities within the cities,
18
45783
2246
01:00
known for problems like crime, poverty,
19
48029
2566
01:02
and the violent drug war between
20
50595
1761
01:04
police and the drug gangs.
21
52356
1412
01:05
So what struck us was that
22
53768
3245
01:09
these were communities that the people
23
57013
1557
01:10
who lived there had built
with their own hands,
with their own hands,
24
58570
2480
01:13
without a master plan
25
61050
1550
01:14
and like a giant work in progress.
26
62600
2900
01:17
Where we're from, in Holland,
27
65500
1874
01:19
everything is planned.
28
67374
2083
01:21
We even have rules for
how to follow the rules.
how to follow the rules.
29
69457
2664
01:24
(Laughter)
30
72121
1556
01:25
DU: So the last day of
filming, we ended up
filming, we ended up
31
73677
2118
01:27
in Vila Cruzeiro, and
we were sitting down
we were sitting down
32
75795
2149
01:30
and we had a drink,
33
77944
1388
01:31
and we were overlooking this hill
34
79332
1675
01:33
with all these houses,
35
81007
1610
01:34
and most of these houses looked unfinished,
36
82617
2335
01:37
and they had walls of bare brick,
37
84952
1430
01:38
but we saw some of these houses
38
86382
1750
01:40
which were plastered and painted,
39
88132
1942
01:42
and suddenly we had this idea:
40
90074
1696
01:43
what would it look like if all these houses
41
91770
2680
01:46
would be plastered and painted?
42
94450
2175
01:48
And then we imagined one big design,
43
96625
3042
01:51
one big work of art.
44
99667
3100
01:54
Who would expect something like that
45
102767
1656
01:56
in a place like this?
46
104423
1866
01:58
So we thought, would that even be possible?
47
106289
3163
02:01
So first we started to count the houses,
48
109452
2688
02:04
but we soon lost count.
49
112140
1898
02:06
But somehow the idea stuck.
50
114038
3196
02:09
JK: We had a friend.
51
117234
1675
02:11
He ran an NGO in Vila Cruzeiro.
52
118909
2611
02:13
His name was Nanko,
53
121520
1285
02:15
and he also liked the idea.
54
122805
2061
02:17
He said, "You know, everybody here
55
124866
1672
02:18
would pretty much love
to have their houses
to have their houses
56
126538
1873
02:20
plastered and painted.
57
128411
1451
02:22
It's when a house is finished."
58
129862
2235
02:24
So he introduced us to the right people,
59
132097
1969
02:26
and Vitor and Maurinho became our crew.
60
134066
3031
02:29
We picked three houses in
the center of the community
the center of the community
61
137097
2917
02:32
and we start here. We made a few designs,
62
140014
2480
02:34
and everybody liked this design
63
142494
1620
02:36
of a boy flying a kite the best.
64
144114
2413
02:38
So we started painting,
and the first thing we did
and the first thing we did
65
146527
2141
02:40
was to paint everything blue,
66
148668
2391
02:43
and we thought that looked
already pretty good.
already pretty good.
67
151059
2591
02:45
But they hated it. The people
who lived there really hated it.
who lived there really hated it.
68
153650
2531
02:48
They said, "What did you do?
69
156181
1643
02:50
You painted our house in
exactly the same color
exactly the same color
70
157824
1889
02:51
as the police station."
71
159713
1800
02:53
(Laughter)
72
161513
1913
02:55
In a favela, that is not a good thing.
73
163426
2226
02:57
Also the same color as the prison cell.
74
165652
3825
03:01
So we quickly went ahead
and we painted the boy,
and we painted the boy,
75
169477
3454
03:05
and then we thought we were finished,
76
172931
1208
03:06
we were really happy, but still,
77
174139
2537
03:08
it wasn't good because the little
kids started coming up to us,
kids started coming up to us,
78
176676
2393
03:11
and they said, "You know,
there's a boy flying the kite,
there's a boy flying the kite,
79
179069
2062
03:13
but where is his kite?"
80
181131
2047
03:15
We said, "Uh, it's art.
81
183178
2115
03:17
You know, you have to imagine the kite."
82
185293
2517
03:20
(Laughter)
83
187810
1052
03:21
And they said, "No, no, no,
we want to see the kite."
we want to see the kite."
84
188862
3664
03:24
So we quickly installed a kite
85
192526
1897
03:26
way up high on the hill,
86
194423
1365
03:27
so that you could see
the boy flying the kite
the boy flying the kite
87
195788
2132
03:30
and you could actually see a kite.
88
197920
2413
03:32
So the local news started writing about it,
89
200333
1855
03:34
which was great,
90
202188
1313
03:35
and then even The Guardian wrote about it:
91
203501
1587
03:37
"Notorious slum becomes open-air gallery."
92
205088
4176
03:41
JK: So, encouraged by this success,
93
209264
2918
03:44
we went back to Rio for a second project,
94
212182
3528
03:47
and we stumbled upon this street.
95
215710
2626
03:50
It was covered in concrete
to prevent mudslides,
to prevent mudslides,
96
218336
3273
03:53
and somehow we saw a sort of river in it,
97
221609
3351
03:57
and we imagined this river
to be a river in Japanese style
to be a river in Japanese style
98
224960
3484
04:00
with koi carp swimming upstream.
99
228444
2746
04:03
So we decided to paint that river,
100
231190
2101
04:05
and we invited Rob Admiraal,
101
233291
2622
04:08
who is a tattoo artist,
102
235913
1400
04:09
and he specialized in the Japanese style.
103
237313
3020
04:12
So little did we know that we would spend
104
240333
1687
04:14
almost an entire year painting that river,
105
242020
3435
04:17
together with Geovani
and Robinho and Vitor,
and Robinho and Vitor,
106
245455
3720
04:21
who lived nearby.
107
249175
2126
04:23
And we even moved into the neighborhood
108
251301
2070
04:25
when one of the guys that
lived on the street, Elias,
lived on the street, Elias,
109
253371
3363
04:28
told us that we could come
and live in his house,
and live in his house,
110
256734
2925
04:31
together with his family,
111
259659
1348
04:33
which was fantastic.
112
261007
1470
04:34
Unfortunately, during that time,
113
262477
1328
04:36
another war broke out between the police
114
263805
2281
04:38
and the drug gangs.
115
266086
1775
04:40
(Video) (Gunfire)
116
267861
4748
04:54
We learned that during those times,
117
282218
2906
04:57
people in communities
really stick together
really stick together
118
285124
2370
04:59
during these times of hardship,
119
287494
1788
05:01
but we also learned a
very important element,
very important element,
120
289282
2610
05:04
the importance of barbecues.
(Laughter)
(Laughter)
121
291892
3307
05:07
Because, when you throw a barbecue,
122
295199
1721
05:09
it turns you from a guest into a host,
123
296920
2441
05:11
so we decided to throw one
124
299361
1213
05:12
almost every other week,
125
300574
1223
05:13
and we got to know everybody
in the neighborhood.
in the neighborhood.
126
301797
3009
05:17
JK: We still had this
idea of the hill, though.
idea of the hill, though.
127
304806
2025
05:19
DU: Yeah, yeah, we were talking about
128
306831
1360
05:20
the scale of this, because this painting
129
308191
1946
05:22
was incredibly big,
130
310137
2261
05:24
and it was insanely detailed,
131
312398
2148
05:26
and this process almost drove
us completely insane ourselves.
us completely insane ourselves.
132
314546
5739
05:32
But we figured that maybe,
during this process,
during this process,
133
320285
3195
05:35
all the time that we had
spent in the neighborhood
spent in the neighborhood
134
323480
2171
05:37
was maybe actually even more important
135
325651
1574
05:39
than the painting itself.
136
327225
2701
05:42
JK: So after all that time,
137
329926
1518
05:43
this hill, this idea was still there,
138
331444
2429
05:46
and we started to make sketches,
139
333873
2385
05:48
models, and we figured something out.
140
336258
3184
05:51
We figured that our ideas, our designs
141
339442
2103
05:53
had to be a little bit more simple than that last project
142
341545
3769
05:57
so that we could paint with more people
143
345314
2144
05:59
and cover more houses at the same time.
144
347458
3656
06:03
And we had an opportunity to try that out
145
351114
2356
06:05
in a community in the central part of Rio,
146
353470
2570
06:08
which is called Santa Marta,
147
356040
1748
06:09
and we made a design for this place
148
357788
2183
06:12
which looked like this,
149
359971
1391
06:13
and then we got people to go along with it
150
361362
1545
06:15
because turns out that if
your idea is ridiculously big,
your idea is ridiculously big,
151
362907
4023
06:19
it's easier to get people to
go along with this. (Laughter)
go along with this. (Laughter)
152
366930
3570
06:22
And the people of Santa Marta
153
370500
2968
06:25
got together and in a little over a month
154
373468
2748
06:28
they turned that square into this.
155
376216
2373
06:30
(Applause)
156
378589
5238
06:37
And this image somehow
went all over the world.
went all over the world.
157
385676
3194
06:41
DU: So then we received
an unexpected phone call
an unexpected phone call
158
388870
3768
06:44
from the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program,
159
392638
3667
06:48
and they had this question
160
396305
1575
06:50
if this idea, our approach,
161
397880
1901
06:51
if this would actually
work in North Philly,
work in North Philly,
162
399781
2914
06:54
which is one of the poorest neighborhoods
163
402695
2431
06:57
in the United States.
164
405126
1652
06:58
So we immediately said yes.
165
406778
3060
07:02
We had no idea how,
166
409838
1910
07:03
but it seemed like a very
interesting challenge,
interesting challenge,
167
411748
2421
07:06
so we did exactly the
same as we did in Rio,
same as we did in Rio,
168
414169
2261
07:08
and we moved into the neighborhood
169
416430
1671
07:10
and started barbecuing.
170
418101
2142
07:12
(Laughter)
171
420243
4859
07:17
So the project took almost two years to complete,
172
425102
3769
07:21
and we made individual designs
173
428871
1890
07:22
for every single house on
the avenue that we painted,
the avenue that we painted,
174
430761
2543
07:25
and we made these designs together
175
433304
1604
07:27
with the local store owners,
the building owners,
the building owners,
176
434908
2613
07:29
and a team of about a dozen
young men and women.
young men and women.
177
437521
4938
07:34
They were hired, and then
they were trained as painters,
they were trained as painters,
178
442459
3499
07:38
and together they transformed
their own neighborhood,
their own neighborhood,
179
445958
3565
07:41
the whole street, into a
giant patchwork of color.
giant patchwork of color.
180
449523
4817
07:46
(Applause)
181
454340
3340
07:52
And at the end, the city of Philadelphia
182
460142
3623
07:55
thanked every single one of them
183
463765
2013
07:57
and gave them a merit for
their accomplishment.
their accomplishment.
184
465778
3316
08:01
JK: So now we had painted a whole street.
185
469094
3152
08:04
How about we do this whole hill now?
186
472246
3555
08:08
We started looking for funding,
187
475801
1878
08:09
but instead, we just ran into questions,
188
477679
3241
08:13
like, how many houses
are you going to paint?
are you going to paint?
189
480920
3419
08:16
How many square meters is that?
190
484339
2156
08:18
How much paint are you going to use,
191
486495
2051
08:20
and how many people are you going to employ?
192
488546
2643
08:23
And we did try for years to write plans
193
491189
2711
08:26
for the funding and answer
all those questions,
all those questions,
194
493900
3319
08:29
but then we thought,
195
497219
1540
08:30
in order to answer all those questions,
196
498759
1913
08:32
you have to know exactly
what you're going to do
what you're going to do
197
500672
2587
08:35
before you actually get there and start.
198
503259
3184
08:38
And maybe it's a mistake
to think like that.
to think like that.
199
506443
3251
08:41
It would lose some of the
magic that we had learned
magic that we had learned
200
509694
2528
08:44
about that if you go somewhere
201
512222
1626
08:46
and you spend time there,
202
513848
2415
08:48
you can let the project grow organically
203
516263
1968
08:50
and have a life of its own.
204
518231
3488
08:53
DU: So what we did is
205
521719
2212
08:56
we decided to take this
plan and strip it away
plan and strip it away
206
523931
3209
08:59
from all the numbers
207
527140
1890
09:01
and all the ideas and presumptions
208
529030
1969
09:03
and just go back to the base idea,
209
530999
2363
09:05
which was to transform this hill
210
533362
2002
09:07
into a giant work of art.
211
535364
2441
09:10
And instead of looking for funding,
212
537805
2402
09:12
we started a crowdfunding campaign,
213
540207
2890
09:15
and in a little over a month,
214
543097
1583
09:16
more than 1,500 people put together
215
544680
2172
09:19
and donated over 100,000 dollars.
216
546852
3275
09:22
So for us, this was an amazing
moment, because now —
moment, because now —
217
550127
3603
09:25
(Applause) —
218
553730
3516
09:29
because now we finally had the freedom
219
557246
3049
09:32
to use all the lessons that we had learned
220
560295
2171
09:34
and create a project that was built
221
562466
3096
09:37
the same way that the favela was built,
222
565562
1912
09:39
from the ground on up, bottom up,
223
567474
1654
09:41
with no master plan.
224
569128
2575
09:43
JK: So we went back,
and we employed Angelo,
and we employed Angelo,
225
571703
3097
09:47
and he's a local artist from Vila Cruzeiro,
226
574800
1922
09:48
very talented guy, and he
knows almost everybody there,
knows almost everybody there,
227
576722
2796
09:51
and then we employed Elias, our former landlord
228
579518
2422
09:54
who invited us into his house,
229
581940
1597
09:55
and he's a master of construction.
230
583537
2014
09:57
Together with them, we decided where to start.
231
585551
2441
10:00
We picked this spot in Vila Cruzeiro,
232
587992
1686
10:01
and houses are being plastered as we speak.
233
589678
2813
10:04
And the good thing about them is that
234
592491
1580
10:06
they are deciding which houses go next.
235
594071
1995
10:08
They're even printing t-shirts,
236
596066
1686
10:09
they're putting up banners
237
597752
1566
10:11
explaining everything to everybody,
238
599318
1984
10:13
and talking to the press.
239
601302
1841
10:15
This article about Angelo appeared.
240
603143
2467
10:17
DU: So while this is happening,
241
605610
1178
10:18
we are bringing this
idea all over the world.
idea all over the world.
242
606788
2185
10:21
So, like the project we
did in Philadelphia,
did in Philadelphia,
243
608973
3317
10:24
we are also invited to do workshops,
244
612290
2148
10:26
for instance in Curaçao,
245
614438
1912
10:28
and right now we're planning
a huge project in Haiti.
a huge project in Haiti.
246
616350
4106
10:32
JK: So the favela was not only the place
247
620456
2744
10:35
where this idea started:
248
623200
1587
10:36
it was also the place that made it possible
249
624787
3555
10:40
to work without a master plan,
250
628342
3126
10:43
because these communities are informal —
251
631468
2070
10:45
this was the inspiration —
252
633538
1439
10:47
and in a communal effort,
together with the people,
together with the people,
253
634977
2600
10:49
you can almost work like in an orchestra,
254
637577
1911
10:51
where you can have a hundred instruments
255
639488
1574
10:53
playing together to create a symphony.
256
641062
2353
10:55
DU: So we want to thank everybody who
257
643415
1957
10:57
wanted to become part of this dream
258
645372
1618
10:59
and supported us along the way,
259
646990
2184
11:01
and we are looking at continuing.
260
649174
2711
11:04
JK: Yeah. And so one day pretty soon,
261
651885
1811
11:05
when the colors start
going up on these walls,
going up on these walls,
262
653696
2509
11:08
we hope more people will join us,
263
656205
1979
11:10
and join this big dream,
264
658184
2813
11:13
and maybe one day, the
whole of Vila Cruzeiro
whole of Vila Cruzeiro
265
660997
2620
11:15
will be painted.
266
663617
1755
11:17
DU: Thank you.
267
665372
1912
11:19
(Applause)
268
667284
3261
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Haas&Hahn - Favela paintersWorking as Haas&Hahn, artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn splash color onto urban walls -- and train young painters in the process.
Why you should listen
It's an image seen around the world -- Praça Cantão, a square within the Santa Marta favela in Rio, blasted with stripes of rainbow colors that turn the jostling masonry walls into a brightly unified vision. Spurred on in 2010 by Dutch artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn in collaboration with the local group "Tudo de cor para você", the painting was accomplished by 25 young people from the neighborhood, and reframed the square as a place of shared pride. The locals have since continued the project, with monthly painting task forces and other activities that have involved 800 people and transformed the aesthetic and the social psychology of the whole favela.
Known as "favela painters", Haas&Hahn have been working on community projects in Rio for almost 10 years. They've also worked in Haiti and Curaçao, and in 2011, they moved north into a tough neighborhood in northern Philadelphia, where they trained the Philly Painting crew to cover a worn-out commercial corridor in massive color blocks. They've returned to Rio in 2014 for a new project in the Vila Cruzeiro favela.
