ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jose Miguel Sokoloff - Anti-guerrilla creative
Ad exec Jose Miguel Sokoloff has led a multi-year marketing campaign that's helped Colombian guerrillas realize that they are wanted back home.

Why you should listen
Jose Miguel Sokoloff knows what it's like to go into a jungle to make a commercial in a Black Hawk helicopter surrounded by soldiers with machine guns. In the last few years he has planned and realized pro-bono ad campaigns on behalf of the Ministry of Defense against the guerrilla war in Colombia -- to persuade FARC guerrillas to demoblize.

Realizing that a guerrillero is as much a prisoner of his organization as are his hostages, Sokoloff and his team played on the promise of freedom. At Christmas 2010, his agency, Lowe-SSP3 Colombia, placed nine decorated holiday trees in the jungle near a banner ad that read: "If Christmas can come to the jungle, you can come home. Demobilize." It won gold at Cannes Lions -- but the most important prize was that it succeeded in its intent, creating a spike in demobilization rates.

The following year the agency planned a poetic campaign called "Rivers of Light" (Operación Ríos de Luz), which floated a raft of glowing plastic balls, filled with gifts and messages from family, down rivers that the revolutionaries typically travel. Christmas 2012's campaign, "Operation Bethlehem," lit up wayfinding "stars" over local villages, offering defectors a route back.

Meanwhile, Sokoloff's agency also handles large global consumer clients like Unilever, as well as the Colombian newspaper El Espectador.

So, I thought a lot about
the first word I'd say today,
0
813
2828
Então, pensei muito sobre a primeira
palavra que iria dizer hoje,
00:15
and I decided to say "Colombia."
1
3641
2514
e decidi dizer "Colômbia".
00:18
And the reason, I don't know
how many of you have visited Colombia,
2
6155
4059
E a razão, eu não sei quantos
de vocês já visitaram a Colômbia,
00:22
but Colombia is just north
of the border with Brazil.
3
10214
2850
mas a Colômbia fica ao norte do Brasil.
00:25
It's a beautiful country
4
13064
1207
É um país lindo
00:26
with extraordinary people,
like me and others -- (Laughter) --
5
14271
3456
com pessoas extraordinárias,
como eu e outros... (Risos)
00:29
and it's populated
with incredible fauna, flora.
6
17727
5430
E é povoado com uma fauna
e flora incríveis.
00:35
It's got water; it's got everything
to be the perfect place.
7
23157
4167
Tem água, tem tudo para ser
um lugar perfeito.
00:39
But we have a few problems.
8
27324
1728
Mas temos alguns problemas.
Devem ter ouvido sobre alguns deles.
00:41
You may have heard of some of them.
9
29052
1670
00:42
We have the oldest
standing guerrilla in the world.
10
30722
3693
Temos a mais longa guerrilha no mundo.
00:46
It's been around for over 50 years,
11
34415
1999
Existe há mais de 50 anos,
00:48
which means that in my lifetime,
12
36414
2763
o que significa que em minha vida inteira,
00:51
I have never lived one day
of peace in my country.
13
39177
4675
eu não vivi um dia de paz em meu país.
00:56
This guerrilla -- and the main group
is the FARC guerrillas,
14
43852
3873
A guerrilha; e o grupo principal
são as guerrilhas FARC,
00:59
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia --
15
47725
2417
Forças Armadas
Revolucionárias da Colômbia,
01:02
they have financed their war
by kidnapping, by extortion,
16
50142
7489
eles financiaram sua guerra,
por meio de sequestro, extorsão,
01:09
by getting into the drug trade,
by illegal mining.
17
57631
3849
entrando no tráfico de drogas,
mineração ilegal.
01:13
There has been terrorism.
There have been random bombs.
18
61480
3821
Houve terrorismo. Houve bombas aleatórias.
01:17
So it's not good.
It's not really good.
19
65301
4275
Então, não é bom. Não é bom, mesmo.
01:21
And if you look at the human cost
of this war over 50 years,
20
69576
4800
E se você olhar para o custo humano
desta guerra de 50 anos,
01:26
we have had more than
5.7 million displaced population.
21
74376
4821
temos mais de 5,7 milhões
de pessoas desalojadas.
01:31
It's one of the biggest displaced
populations in the world,
22
79197
3068
É uma das maiores populações
desalojadas do mundo,
01:34
and this conflict has cost
over 220,000 lives.
23
82265
4109
e esse conflito já custou
mais de 220 mil vidas.
01:38
So it's a little bit like
the Bolívar wars again.
24
86374
3058
Então, é mais ou menos,
como as guerras bolivarianas de novo.
01:41
It's a lot of people who
have died unnecessarily.
25
89432
3155
São muitas pessoas mortas
desnecessariamente.
01:44
We are now in the middle of peace talks,
26
92587
3078
Agora estamos no meio
de uma conversa de paz,
01:47
and we've been trying to help
resolve this problem peacefully,
27
95665
3293
e temos tentado ajudar a resolver
o problema de forma pacífica,
01:51
and as part of that,
28
98958
1560
e, como parte disso,
01:52
we decided to try something
completely lateral and different:
29
100518
3909
decidimos tentar
algo completamente diferente:
01:56
Christmas lights.
30
104427
2044
luzes de Natal.
01:58
So Christmas lights, and you're saying,
31
106471
2506
Então as luzes de Natal,
e você está dizendo,
02:01
what the hell is this guy
going to talk about?
32
108977
2916
de que diabos este cara está falando?
02:04
I am going to talk about gigantic trees
33
112173
4612
Vou falar de árvores imensas
02:08
that we put in nine strategic
pathways in the jungle
34
116785
5627
que em nove trilhas
estratégicas na floresta
02:14
covered with Christmas lights.
35
122412
2009
foram cobertas com luzes de Natal.
02:16
These trees helped us
demobilize 331 guerrillas,
36
124421
6178
Estas árvores nos ajudaram
a desmobilizar 331 guerrilheiros,
02:22
roughly five percent
of the guerrilla force at the time.
37
130599
4498
mais ou menos, 5% da força
de guerrilha daquela época.
02:27
These trees were lit up at night,
38
135097
2578
Estas árvores eram acesas à noite,
02:29
and they had a sign beside them
39
137675
2369
e tinham uma placa embaixo delas
02:32
that said, "If Christmas can come
to the jungle, you can come home.
40
140044
4691
que dizia: "Se o Natal pode
ir à floresta, você pode vir para casa.
02:36
Demobilize.
41
144735
1700
Desmobilize-se.
02:38
At Christmas, everything is possible."
42
146435
2481
No Natal, tudo é possível."
02:41
So how do we know these trees worked?
43
148916
3293
Então, como sabemos
que as árvores funcionaram?
02:44
Well, we got 331, which is okay,
44
152209
2006
Bem, nós recebemos 331, que é bom,
02:46
but we also know that
not a lot of guerrillas saw them,
45
154215
5265
mas também sabemos
que não muitos guerrilheiros as viram,
02:51
but we know that a lot of
guerrillas heard about them,
46
159480
2504
mas que muitos ouviram falar delas.
02:54
and we know this
47
161984
1207
e sabemos disso
02:55
because we are constantly talking
to demobilized guerrillas.
48
163191
3104
porque sempre conversamos
com guerrilheiros desmobilizados.
02:58
So let me take you back
four years before the trees.
49
166295
2755
Então, voltemos a quatro anos
antes das árvores.
03:01
Four years before the trees,
we were approached by the government
50
169050
3685
Quatro anos antes das árvores,
fomos procurados pelo governo
03:04
to help them come up with
a communications strategy
51
172735
4147
para ajudá-los a elaborar
uma estratégia de comunicação
03:09
to get as many guerrillas
as we could out of the jungle.
52
176882
3200
para tirar o máximo
de guerrilheiros da floresta.
03:12
The government had a military strategy,
53
180082
2452
O governo tinha uma estratégia militar,
03:14
it had a legal strategy,
54
182534
1328
tinha uma estratégia legal,
03:16
it had a political strategy, but it said,
55
183862
2829
tinha uma estratégia política, mas disse:
03:18
"We don't really have
a communications strategy,
56
186691
2345
"Nós não temos uma estratégia
de comunicação,
03:21
and it probably would be
a good thing to have,"
57
189036
2951
e talvez seria bom ter,"
03:24
so we decided to
immediately jump into this,
58
191987
4386
então decidimos nos debruçar
sobre isso logo
03:28
because it is an opportunity
to affect the outcome of the conflict
59
196373
5215
porque é a oportunidade de influir
no resultado do conflito
03:33
with the things that we do,
with the tools that we have.
60
201588
4096
com as coisas que fazemos,
com as ferramentas que temos.
03:38
But we didn't know very much about it.
61
206264
2229
Mas não sabíamos muito a respeito.
03:40
We didn't understand in Colombia,
if you live in the cities,
62
208493
3216
Nós não entendíamos na Colômbia,
se moramos nas cidades,
03:43
you're very far away from where
the war is actually happening,
63
211709
3094
estamos muito longe
de onde as guerras acontecem,
03:47
so you don't really understand it,
64
214803
2013
então, na verdade, não entendemos direito,
03:49
and we asked the government
to give us access
65
216816
2166
e pedimos que o governo nos desse acesso
03:51
to as many demobilized
guerrillas as possible.
66
218982
2542
ao máximo possível de guerrilheiros
desmobilizados.
03:53
And we talked to about 60 of them
67
221524
2456
E conversamos com uns 60 deles.
antes de termos certeza que entendíamos
o problema na totalidade.
03:56
before we felt we fully
understood the problem.
68
223980
5094
Conversamos sobre... Nos falaram
porque se juntaram às guerrilhas,
04:01
We talked about -- they told us why
they had joined the guerrillas,
69
229074
3312
porque saíram das guerrilhas,
quais eram os sonhos deles,
04:04
why the left the guerrillas,
what their dreams were,
70
232386
2639
04:07
what their frustrations were,
71
235025
1688
quais eram suas frustrações,
04:08
and from those conversations
came the underlying insight
72
236713
4460
e com essas conversas vieram
as principais inspirações
04:13
that has guided this whole campaign,
73
241173
2497
que orientaram toda esta campanha,
04:15
which is that guerrillas are as much
prisoners of their organizations
74
243670
5390
que os guerrilheiros são tão prisioneiros
de sua própria organização
04:21
as the people they hold hostage.
75
249060
2473
quanto as pessoas mantidas refém.
04:23
And at the beginning, we were
so touched by these stories,
76
251533
2780
E no começo, ficamos emocionados
com estas histórias,
04:26
we were so amazed by these stories,
77
254313
2283
ficamos tão maravilhados
com estas histórias,
04:28
that we thought that maybe
the best way to talk to the guerrillas
78
256596
3139
que achamos que, talvez, o melhor jeito
de conversar com eles
04:31
was to have them talk to themselves,
79
259735
2835
era deixá-los conversar com eles mesmos,
04:34
so we recorded about a hundred
different stories during the first year,
80
262570
4784
então gravamos cerca de cem histórias
ao longo do primeiro ano,
04:39
and we put them on
the radio and television
81
267354
2368
e as colocamos no rádio e TV
04:41
so that the guerrillas in the jungle
could hear stories, their stories,
82
269722
4345
para que os guerrilheiros na floresta
pudessem ouvir suas histórias,
04:46
or stories similar to theirs,
83
274067
2348
histórias parecidas às deles,
04:48
and when they heard them,
they decided to go out.
84
276415
2780
e quando as ouvissem, decidissem sair.
04:51
I want to tell you one of these stories.
85
279195
2594
Quero contar uma dessas histórias.
04:53
This person you see here
is Giovanni Andres.
86
281789
2654
Este que vocês vêem aqui
é Giovanni Andres.
04:56
Giovanni Andres is 25
when we took that picture.
87
284443
2831
Giovanni Andres tinha 25 anos
quando esta foto foi tirada.
04:59
He had been seven years in the guerrilla,
and he had demobilized very recently.
88
287274
4689
Ele já estava na guerrilha há sete anos,
e saiu recentemente.
05:04
His story is the following:
89
291963
2565
A história dele é a seguinte:
05:06
He was recruited when he was 17,
90
294528
3196
Ele foi recrutado quando tinha 17 anos,
05:09
and sometime later,
in his squadron, if you will,
91
297724
5185
e mais tarde, no esquadrão dele,
por assim dizer,
05:15
this beautiful girl was recruited,
and they fell in love.
92
302909
5176
uma garota linda foi recrutada,
eles se apaixonaram.
05:20
Their conversations were about
what their family was going to be like,
93
308085
3871
As conversas eram sobre como
seria a família deles,
05:24
what their kids' names would be,
94
311957
2331
quais seriam os nomes dos filhos,
05:26
how their life would be
when they left the guerrilla.
95
314288
2597
como seriam suas vidas
ao abandonarem a guerrilha.
05:29
But it turns out
96
316885
1457
Mas acontece que
05:30
that love is very strictly forbidden
in the lower ranks of the guerrilla,
97
318342
3593
amor é estritamente proibido
entre soldados rasos da guerrilha,
05:34
so their romance was discovered
and they were separated.
98
321935
3363
então o namoro foi descoberto
e eles foram separados.
05:37
He was sent very far away,
and she was left behind.
99
325298
3413
Ele foi mandado para muito longe
e ela permaneceu.
05:40
She was very familiar with the territory,
100
328711
2657
Ela estava muito
familiarizada com o lugar.
05:43
so one night, when she was on guard,
101
331368
2581
Então, uma noite, ela estava de sentinela,
05:46
she just left,
102
333949
1701
e simplesmente fugiu
05:47
and she went to the army, she demobilized,
103
335650
3462
e foi ao exército, se desmobilizou,
05:51
and she was one of the persons
that we had the fortune to talk to,
104
339112
3884
e ela é uma das pessoas com as quais
tivemos a sorte de conversar,
05:55
and we were really touched by this story,
105
342996
2350
e ficamos muito tocados com sua história,
05:57
so we made a radio spot,
106
345346
2368
então arrumamos um espaço no rádio,
05:59
and it turns out, by chance,
107
347714
2926
e acabou que, por acaso,
06:02
that far away, many,
many kilometers north,
108
350640
3483
longe muitos quilômetros ao norte,
06:06
he heard her on the radio,
109
354123
3158
ele a ouviu no rádio,
06:09
and when he heard her on the radio,
he said, "What am I doing here?
110
357281
4570
e quando ele a ouviu no rádio, ele disse:
"O que estou fazendo aqui?
06:14
She had the balls to get out.
I need to do the same thing."
111
361851
5442
Ela teve a coragem de sair.
Preciso fazer a mesma coisa."
06:19
And he did.
112
367293
1398
E ele fez.
06:20
He walked for two days and two nights,
113
368691
2898
Ele caminhou por dois dias e duas noites,
06:23
and he risked his life and he got out,
114
371589
2363
e arriscou sua vida e escapou,
06:26
and the only thing
he wanted was to see her.
115
373952
2961
e a única coisa que ele queria era vê-la.
06:29
The only thing that was
in his mind was to see her.
116
376913
3526
A única coisa que ele tinha
em mente era vê-la.
06:32
The story was, they did meet.
117
380439
2917
A história era: ele se encontraram.
06:35
I know you're wondering if they did meet.
118
383356
2531
Sei que estão se perguntando
se eles se encontraram.
06:38
They did meet.
119
385887
1249
Sim, eles se encontraram.
06:39
She had been recruited when she was 15,
and she left when she was 17,
120
387136
4003
Ela foi recrutada quando tinha 15 anos,
e partiu quando tinha 17,
06:43
so there were a lot
of other complications,
121
391139
2060
então havia muitas outras complicações,
06:45
but they did eventually meet.
122
393199
1732
mas eles, enfim, se encontraram.
06:47
I don't know if they're together now,
but I can find out. (Laughter)
123
394931
5275
Não sei se estão juntos agora,
mas posso descobrir. (Risos)
06:52
But what I can tell you is that
our radio strategy was working.
124
400206
7971
Mas o que posso dizer é que nossa
estratégia do rádio estava funcionando.
07:00
The problem is that it was working
in the lower ranks of the guerrilla.
125
408177
3684
O problema é que estava funcionando
para as menores patentes da guerrilha.
07:04
It was not working with the commanders,
126
411861
2363
Não estava funcionando para o comando,
07:06
the people that are
more difficult to replace,
127
414224
2211
as pessoas mais difíceis de substituir,
07:08
because you can easily recruit
but you can't get the older commanders.
128
416435
5578
porque é muito fácil recrutar
mas não se conseguem
comandantes mais antigos.
07:14
So we thought, well,
we'll use the same strategy.
129
422013
3683
Então, pensamos, bem,
usaremos a mesma estratégia.
07:17
We'll have commanders
talking to commanders.
130
425696
2566
Teremos comandantes conversando
com comandantes.
07:20
And we even went as far
as asking ex-commanders of the guerrilla
131
428262
3776
E chegamos até a pedir
a ex-comandantes da guerrilha
07:24
to fly on helicopters with microphones
132
432038
2735
para voarem de helicópteros
com alto-falantes
07:26
telling the people that
used to fight with them,
133
434773
3461
dizendo às pessoas
que costumavam lutar com eles:
07:30
"There is a better life out there,"
134
438234
2113
"Existe uma vida melhor lá fora",
07:32
"I'm doing good,"
"This is not worth it," etc.
135
440347
2577
"Estou bem", "Isso não vale a pena", etc.
07:35
But, as you can all imagine,
it was very easy to counteract,
136
442924
5106
Mas, como podem imaginar,
foi muito fácil neutralizar,
07:40
because what was
the guerrilla going to say?
137
448030
2553
porque o que a guerrilha iria fazer?
07:42
"Yeah, right, if he doesn't do that,
he's going to get killed."
138
450583
3208
"Bom, se ele não fizer isso,
eles o matam."
07:45
So it was easy, so we were
suddenly left with nothing,
139
453791
4065
Então, foi fácil, ficamos desarmados,
07:50
because the guerrilla
were spreading the word
140
457856
2279
porque a guerrilha estava espalhando
07:52
that all of those things are done
141
460135
2711
que todas aquelas coisas eram ditas
07:55
because if they don't do it,
they're in danger.
142
462846
5502
porque se não dissessem,
estavam em perigo.
08:00
And somebody, some
brilliant person in our team,
143
468348
3164
E alguém, alguma pessoa
brilhante de nossa equipe,
08:03
came back and said,
"You know what I noticed?
144
471512
3638
voltou e disse: "Sabem o que notei?
08:07
I noticed that around Christmastime,
145
475150
3557
Notei que no período de Natal,
08:10
there have been peaks of demobilization
146
478707
2691
há picos de desmobilização
08:13
since this war has started."
147
481398
2995
desde que a guerra começou."
08:16
And that was incredible,
148
484393
2607
E isso foi incrível,
08:19
because that led us to think
that we needed to talk to the human being
149
487000
5481
porque nos levou a pensar que
precisávamos conversar com seres humanos
08:24
and not to the soldier.
150
492481
1571
e não com os soldados.
08:26
We needed to step away from talking
151
494052
2137
Tínhamos que parar de conversar
08:28
from government to army,
from army to army,
152
496189
5270
de governo para exército,
de exército para exército,
08:33
and we needed to talk
about the universal values,
153
501459
3297
e precisávamos conversar
sobre valores universais,
08:36
and we needed to talk about humanity.
154
504756
2462
e precisávamos conversar sobre humanidade.
08:39
And that was when
the Christmas tree happened.
155
507218
3374
E foi quando as árvores de Natal surgiram,
08:42
This picture that I have here,
156
510592
2007
Nesta foto que tenho aqui,
08:44
you see this is the planning
of the Christmas trees,
157
512599
3192
vocês veem que é o planejamento
das árvores de Natal,
08:47
and that man you see there
with the three stars,
158
515791
3749
e o homem que vocês veem lá
com as três estrelas,
08:51
he's Captain Juan Manuel Valdez.
159
519540
2129
ele é Capitão Juan Manuel Valdez.
08:53
Captain Valdez was the first
high-ranking official
160
521669
4971
Capitão Manuel Valdez foi
o primeiro oficial de alta patente
08:58
to give us the helicopters
and the support we needed
161
526640
3863
que nos deu helicópteros
e o apoio de que precisávamos
09:02
to put these Christmas trees up,
162
530503
2350
para montar estas árvores de Natal,
09:05
and he said in that meeting
something that I will never forget.
163
532853
3292
e ele disse nessa reunião
algo que nunca esquecerei.
09:08
He said, "I want to do this
because being generous makes me stronger,
164
536145
7194
Ele disse: "Quero fazer isso porque
ser generoso me deixa mais forte,
09:15
makes my men feel stronger."
165
543339
2352
faz meus soldados
sentirem-se mais fortes."
09:17
And I get very emotional
when I remember him
166
545691
2740
E me emociono bastante
quando me lembro dele,
09:20
because he was killed later in combat
and we really miss him,
167
548431
4385
pois foi morto depois em combate
e sentimos muita falta dele,
09:25
but I wanted you all to see him,
because he was really, really important.
168
552816
6276
mas queria que vocês o vissem,
pois ele foi muito, muito importante.
09:31
He gave us all the support
to put up the first Christmas trees.
169
559092
4128
Ele nos deu todo o apoio para montarmos
as primeiras árvores de Natal.
09:35
What happened later is that
the guerrillas who came out
170
563220
2733
O que houve depois é que
os guerrilheiros que chegaram
09:38
during the Christmas tree
operation and all of that
171
565953
3620
durante a operação
das árvores de Natal e tudo mais
09:41
said, "That's really good,
Christmas trees are really cool,
172
569573
3796
disseram: "Isso é muito bom,
árvores de Natal são muito legais,
09:45
but you know what?
We really don't walk anymore.
173
573369
2530
mas, quer saber?
Nós, na verdade, não andamos mais.
09:48
We use rivers."
174
575899
1452
Nós usamos os rios."
09:49
So rivers are the highways of the jungle,
175
577351
3387
Então os rios são as rodovias da floresta,
09:52
and this is something we learned,
176
580738
2197
e isso é algo que aprendemos,
09:55
and most of the recruiting was being done
in and around the river villages.
177
582935
5302
e muitos dos recrutamentos
estão sendo feitos
nos vilarejos ao redor dos rios,
Então, fomos até os vilarejos dos rios,
10:00
So we went to these river villages,
178
588237
2283
10:02
and we asked the people,
179
590520
1901
e perguntamos às pessoas,
10:04
and probably some of them were
direct acquaintances of the guerrillas.
180
592421
3354
e, talvez, muitas delas conhecidas
dos guerrilheiros.
10:07
We asked them, "Can you send
guerrillas a message?"
181
595775
3994
Perguntamos a elas: "Você pode escrever
uma mensagem aos guerrilheiros?"
10:11
We collected over 6,000 messages.
182
599769
3390
E coletamos mais de 6 mil mensagens.
10:15
Some of them were notes saying, get out.
183
603159
2646
Muitas delas, bilhetes dizendo: "Saiam."
10:18
Some of them were toys.
Some of them were candy.
184
605805
2717
Algumas delas eram brinquedos.
Algumas delas eram doces.
10:20
Even people took off their jewelry,
their little crosses and religious things,
185
608522
4190
As pessoas até tiraram suas joias,
suas pequenas cruzes e coisas religiosas,
10:24
and put them in these floating balls
that we sent down the rivers
186
612725
5415
e colocaram-nas em bolas flutuantes
que desceram rio abaixo,
10:30
so that they could be picked up at night.
187
618140
2595
para que os presentes
pudessem ser coletados à noite.
10:32
And we sent thousands
of these down the rivers,
188
620735
2358
E enviamos milhares destes rio abaixo,
10:35
and then picked them up
later if they weren't.
189
623093
2170
e pegávamos mais tarde
se não foram coletados.
10:37
But lots of them were picked up.
190
625263
1532
Mas vários foram coletados.
10:38
This generated, on average,
a demobilization every six hours,
191
626795
4891
Isso gerou, mais ou menos,
uma desmobilização a cada seis horas,
10:43
so this was incredible and it was about:
Come home at Christmas.
192
631686
4060
então isso foi incrível e era para dizer:
"Venham para casa no Natal."
10:49
Then came the peace process,
193
636920
4081
Então veio o processo de pacificação
10:53
and when the peace process started,
194
641001
2441
e o processo de pacificação começou,
10:55
the whole mindset
of the guerrilla changed.
195
643442
2320
toda a mentalidade
dos guerrilheiros mudou.
10:57
And it changed because
196
645762
2325
E mudou porque
11:00
it makes you think, "Well,
if there's a peace process,
197
648087
2749
faz pensar:
"Bem, se tem um processo de paz,
11:03
this is probably going to be over.
198
650836
1942
isso, com certeza, vai acabar.
11:04
At some point I'm going to get out."
199
652778
2112
Uma hora vou sair."
11:07
And their fears completely changed,
200
654890
2206
E os seus medos mudaram completamente,
11:09
and their fears were not about,
"Am I going to get killed?"
201
657096
3228
e os medos deles não eram mais:
"Será que vou ser morto?"
11:12
Their fears were, "Am I
going to be rejected?
202
660324
3599
Os medos deles eram:
"Será que ou ser rejeitado?
11:16
When I get out of this,
am I going to be rejected?"
203
663923
2809
Quando sair daqui,
será que vou ser rejeitado?"
11:18
So the past Christmas,
what we did was we asked --
204
666732
3071
Então no último Natal nós pedimos;
11:22
we found 27 mothers of guerrillas,
205
669803
3747
encontramos 27 mães de guerrilheiros,
11:25
and we asked them to give us
pictures of their children,
206
673550
4234
e pedimos que nos dessem
fotos de seus filhos,
11:29
when they only could recognize themselves,
so as not to put their lives in danger,
207
677784
4205
que só eles conseguiriam reconhecer,
para não pôr suas vidas em perigo,
11:34
and we asked them to give
the most motherly message you can get,
208
681989
4276
e pedimos que enviassem a mensagem
mais maternal possível,
11:38
which is, "Before you were a guerrilla,
you were my child,
209
686265
4592
que é: "Antes de ser guerrilheiro,
você era meu filho,
11:43
so come home, I'm waiting for you."
210
690857
2252
então venha para casa.
Estou esperando você."
11:45
You can see the pictures here.
I'll show you a couple.
211
693109
3152
Você pode ver as fotos aqui.
Mostrarei algumas.
11:48
(Applause)
212
696261
1344
(Aplausos)
11:49
Thank you.
213
697605
2198
Obrigado.
11:55
And these pictures were placed
in many different places,
214
703552
5178
Estas fotos foram colocadas
em vários lugares,
12:00
and a lot of them came back,
215
708730
4162
e muitas delas voltaram,
12:05
and it was really, really beautiful.
216
712892
2948
e foi muito, muito bonito.
12:08
And then we decided to work with society.
217
715840
3475
E decidimos trabalhar com a sociedade.
12:11
So we did mothers around Christmastime.
218
719315
2657
Trabalhamos com as mães
durante o período do Natal.
12:14
Now let's talk about
the rest of the people.
219
721972
2854
Agora vamos falar sobre as outras pessoas.
12:17
And you may be aware of this or not,
but there was a World Cup this year,
220
724826
5362
E talvez vocês saibam disso ou não,
mas houve Copa do Mundo este ano,
12:22
and Colombia played really well,
and it was a unifying moment for Colombia.
221
730190
7427
e a Colômbia jogou superbem,
foi um momento unificador para a Colômbia.
12:29
And what we did was tell the guerrillas,
222
737617
3836
E o que fizemos foi falar
para os guerrilheiros:
12:33
"Come, get out of the jungle.
We're saving a place for you."
223
741453
4057
"Venham, saiam das florestas.
Estamos guardando um lugar para vocês."
12:37
So this was television, this was
all different types of media saying,
224
745510
5065
E foi na TV, foi em diversas
mídias dizendo:
12:42
"We are saving a place for you."
225
750575
2462
"Estamos guardando um lugar para vocês."
12:45
The soldier here in the commercial says,
226
753037
3019
O soldado aqui no comercial diz:
12:48
"I'm saving a place for you
right here in this helicopter
227
756056
2865
"Estou guardando um lugar para vocês
aqui neste helicóptero
12:51
so that you can get out of this jungle
and go enjoy the World Cup."
228
758921
3813
para que você saia da floresta
e curta a Copa do Mundo."
12:54
Ex-football players, radio announcers,
229
762734
3167
Ex-jogadores de futebol, radialistas,
12:58
everybody was saving
a place for the guerrilla.
230
765901
2294
todos guardando
um lugar para os guerrilheiros.
13:00
So since we started this work
a little over eight years ago,
231
768195
4775
Então, desde que começamos este trabalho,
há pouco mais de oito anos,
13:05
17,000 guerrillas have demobilized.
232
772970
3427
17 mil guerrilheiros desmobilizaram-se.
13:08
I do not -- (Applause)
233
776397
4039
Eu não... (Aplausos)
13:12
Thank you.
234
780436
2581
Obrigado.
13:15
I don't want to say in any way
that it only has to do with what we do,
235
783017
8697
Não quero dizer
que foi tudo pelo que fazemos,
13:23
but what I do know is that our work
and the work that we do
236
791714
6574
mas o que sei é que nosso trabalho
e o trabalho que fazemos
13:30
may have helped a lot of them
start thinking about demobilization,
237
798288
4672
pode ter ajudado muitos deles
a começarem a pensar sobre desmobilizar.
13:35
and it may have helped a lot of them
take the final decision.
238
802960
4008
e pode ter ajudado muitos deles
a tomarem a decisão final.
13:39
If that is true, advertising is still
one of the most powerful tools of change
239
806968
6530
Se isso é verdade, a publicidade é ainda
uma das ferramentas mais poderosas
de mudança de que dispomos.
13:45
that we have available.
240
813498
2242
13:47
And I speak not only my behalf,
241
815740
2891
E eu não falo só por mim,
13:50
but on behalf of all
the colleagues I see here
242
818631
2344
mas por todos colegas que vejo aqui
13:53
who work in advertising,
243
820975
1664
que trabalham em publicidade,
13:54
and of all the team that has
worked with me to do this,
244
822639
4026
e em nome de todas as equipes
que trabalharam comigo nisso,
13:58
that if you want to change the world,
245
826665
3249
que se você quiser mudar o mundo,
14:02
or if you want to achieve
peace, please call us.
246
829914
2461
se quiser alcançar paz,
por favor nos chame.
14:04
We'd love to help.
247
832375
1500
Adoraríamos ajudar.
14:06
Thank you.
248
833875
1363
Obrigado.
