ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jose Miguel Sokoloff - Anti-guerrilla creative
Ad exec Jose Miguel Sokoloff has led a multi-year marketing campaign that's helped Colombian guerrillas realize that they are wanted back home.

Why you should listen
Jose Miguel Sokoloff knows what it's like to go into a jungle to make a commercial in a Black Hawk helicopter surrounded by soldiers with machine guns. In the last few years he has planned and realized pro-bono ad campaigns on behalf of the Ministry of Defense against the guerrilla war in Colombia -- to persuade FARC guerrillas to demoblize.

Realizing that a guerrillero is as much a prisoner of his organization as are his hostages, Sokoloff and his team played on the promise of freedom. At Christmas 2010, his agency, Lowe-SSP3 Colombia, placed nine decorated holiday trees in the jungle near a banner ad that read: "If Christmas can come to the jungle, you can come home. Demobilize." It won gold at Cannes Lions -- but the most important prize was that it succeeded in its intent, creating a spike in demobilization rates.

The following year the agency planned a poetic campaign called "Rivers of Light" (Operación Ríos de Luz), which floated a raft of glowing plastic balls, filled with gifts and messages from family, down rivers that the revolutionaries typically travel. Christmas 2012's campaign, "Operation Bethlehem," lit up wayfinding "stars" over local villages, offering defectors a route back.

Meanwhile, Sokoloff's agency also handles large global consumer clients like Unilever, as well as the Colombian newspaper El Espectador.

00:18
And the reason原因, I don't know
how many許多 of you have visited參觀 Colombia哥倫比亞,

00:39
But we have a few少數 problems問題.
8
27324
1728
00:41
You may可能 have heard聽說 of some of them.
9
29052
1670
00:42
We have the oldest最老的
standing常設 guerrilla游擊隊 in the world世界.
10
30722
3693
00:46
It's been around for over 50 years年份,
11
34415
1999
00:48
which哪一個 means手段 that in my lifetime一生,
12

00:51
I have never lived生活 one day
of peace和平 in my country國家.
13
39177
4675
00:56
This guerrilla游擊隊 -- and the main主要 group
is the FARCFARC guerrillas游擊隊,
14
43852
3873
01:02
they have financed資助 their war戰爭

01:13
There has been terrorism
There have been random隨機 bombs炸彈.
18
61480
3821
01:17
So it's not good.
It's not really good.
19
65301
4275
01:21
And if you look at the human人的 cost成本
of this war戰爭 over 50 years年份,
20
69576
4800
01:26
we have had more than
01:31
It's one of the biggest最大 displaced流離失所
populations人群 in the world世界,
22
79197
3068
01:34
and this conflict衝突 has cost成本
over 220,000 lives生活.
23
82265
4109
01:38
So it's a little bit like
the Bol波爾ívarVAR wars戰爭 again.
24
86374
3058
01:41
It's a lot of people who
01:44
We are now in the middle中間 of peace和平 talks會談,
26
92587
3078
01:47
and we've我們已經 been trying to help
resolve解決 this problem問題 peacefully安然,
27
95665
3293
01:51
and as part部分 of that,
28
98958
1560
01:52
we decided決定 to try something
completely全然 lateral and different不同:
29
100518
3909
01:58
So Christmas聖誕 lights燈火, and you're saying,
31
106471
2506
02:01
what the hell地獄 is this guy
going to talk about?
32
108977
2916
02:04
I am going to talk about gigantic巨大 trees樹木
33
112173
4612
02:08
that we put in nine strategic戰略
pathways途徑 in the jungle叢林
34
116785
5627
02:14
covered覆蓋 with Christmas聖誕 lights燈火.
35
122412
2009
02:16
These trees樹木 helped幫助 us
of the guerrilla游擊隊 force at the time.
37
130599
4498
02:27
These trees樹木 were lit發光的 up at night,
38
135097
2578
02:29
and they had a sign標誌 beside them
39
137675
2369
02:32
that said, "If Christmas聖誕 can come
to the jungle叢林, you can come home.
40
140044
4691
02:36
Demobilize復員.
41
144735
1700
02:38
At Christmas聖誕, everything is possible可能."
42
146435
2481
02:41
So how do we know these trees樹木 worked工作?
43
148916
3293
02:44
Well, we got 331, which哪一個 is okay,
44
152209
2006
02:46
but we also know that
not a lot of guerrillas游擊隊 saw them,
45
154215
5265
02:51
but we know that a lot of
guerrillas游擊隊 heard聽說 about them,
46
159480
2504
02:54
and we know this
47
161984
1207
02:55
because we are constantly經常 talking
02:58
So let me take you back
four years年份 before the trees樹木.
49
166295
2755
03:01
Four years年份 before the trees樹木,
we were approached接近 by the government政府
50
169050
3685
03:04
to help them come up with
a communications通訊 strategy戰略
51
172735
4147
03:09
to get as many許多 guerrillas游擊隊
as we could out of the jungle叢林.
52
176882
3200
03:12
The government政府 had a military軍事 strategy戰略,
53
180082
2452
03:14
it had a legal法律 strategy戰略,
54
182534
1328
03:16
it had a political政治 strategy戰略, but it said,
55
183862
2829
03:18
"We don't really have
a communications通訊 strategy戰略,
56
186691
2345
03:21
and it probably大概 would be
a good thing to have,"
57
189036
2951
03:24
so we decided決定 to
immediately立即 jump into this,
58
191987
4386
03:28
because it is an opportunity機會
to affect影響 the outcome結果 of the conflict衝突
59
196373
5215
03:33
with the things that we do,
with the tools工具 that we have.
60
201588
4096
03:38
But we didn't know very much about it.
61
206264
2229
03:40
We didn't understand理解 in Colombia哥倫比亞,
if you live生活 in the cities城市,
62
208493
3216
03:43
you're very far away from where
the war戰爭 is actually其實 happening事件,
63
211709
3094
03:47
so you don't really understand理解 it,
64
214803
2013
03:49
and we asked the government政府
to give us access訪問
65
216816
2166
03:51
to as many許多 demobilized復員
03:53
And we talked to about 60 of them
67
221524
2456
03:56
before we felt we fully充分
understood了解 the problem問題.
68
223980
5094
04:01
We talked about -- they told us why
they had joined加盟 the guerrillas游擊隊,
69
229074
3312
04:04
why the left the guerrillas游擊隊,
what their dreams were,
70
232386
2639
04:07
what their frustrations挫折 were,
71
235025
1688
04:08
and from those conversations對話
came來了 the underlying底層 insight眼光
72
236713
4460
04:13
that has guided引導 this whole整個 campaign運動,
73
241173
2497
04:15
which哪一個 is that guerrillas游擊隊 are as much
prisoners囚犯 of their organizations組織
74
243670
5390
04:21
as the people they hold保持 hostage人質.
75
249060
2473
04:23
And at the beginning開始, we were
so touched感動 by these stories故事,
76
251533
2780
04:26
we were so amazed吃驚 by these stories故事,
77
254313
2283
04:28
that we thought that maybe
the best最好 way to talk to the guerrillas游擊隊
78
256596
3139
04:31
was to have them talk to themselves他們自己,
79
259735
2835
04:34
so we recorded記錄 about a hundred
different不同 stories故事 during the first year,
80
262570
4784
04:39
and we put them on
the radio無線電 and television電視
81
267354
2368
04:41
so that the guerrillas游擊隊 in the jungle叢林
could hear stories故事, their stories故事,
82
269722
4345
04:46
or stories故事 similar類似 to theirs他們的,
83
274067
2348
04:48
and when they heard聽說 them,
they decided決定 to go out.
84
276415
2780
04:51
I want to tell you one of these stories故事.
85
279195
2594
04:53
This person you see here
when we took that picture圖片.
87
284443
2831
04:59
He had been seven years年份 in the guerrilla游擊隊,
and he had demobilized復員 very recently最近.
88
287274
4689
05:04
His story故事 is the following以下:
89
291963
2565
05:06
He was recruited應徵 when he was 17,
90
294528
3196
05:09
and sometime某時 later後來,
in his squadron, if you will,
91
297724
5185
05:15
this beautiful美麗 girl女孩 was recruited應徵,
and they fell下跌 in love.
92
302909
5176
05:20
Their conversations對話 were about
what their family家庭 was going to be like,
93
308085
3871
05:24
what their kids'孩子們 names would be,
94
311957
2331
05:26
how their life would be
when they left the guerrilla游擊隊.
95
314288
2597
05:29
But it turns out
96
316885
1457
05:30
that love is very strictly嚴格 forbidden被禁止
in the lower降低 ranks行列 of the guerrilla游擊隊,
97
318342
3593
05:34
so their romance浪漫 was discovered發現
and they were separated分離.
98
321935
3363
05:37
He was sent發送 very far away,
and she was left behind背後.
99
325298
3413
05:40
She was very familiar with the territory領土,
100
328711
2657
05:43
so one night, when she was on guard守衛,
101
331368
2581
05:46
she just left,
102
333949
1701
05:47
and she went to the army軍隊, she demobilized復員,
103
335650
3462
05:51
and she was one of the persons
that we had the fortune幸運 to talk to,
104
339112
3884
05:55
and we were really touched感動 by this story故事,
105
342996
2350
05:57
so we made製作 a radio無線電 spot,
106
345346
2368
05:59
and it turns out, by chance機會,
107
347714
2926
06:02
that far away, many許多,
many許多 kilometers公里 north,
108
350640
3483
06:06
he heard聽說 her on the radio無線電,
109
354123
3158
06:09
and when he heard聽說 her on the radio無線電,
he said, "What am I doing here?
110
357281
4570
06:14
She had the balls to get out.
I need to do the same相同 thing."
111
361851
5442
06:19
And he did.
112
367293
1398
06:20
He walked for two days and two nights,
113
368691
2898
06:23
and he risked冒險 his life and he got out,
114
371589
2363
06:26
and the only thing
he wanted was to see her.
115
373952
2961
06:29
The only thing that was
in his mind心神 was to see her.
116
376913
3526
06:32
The story故事 was, they did meet遇到.
117
380439
2917
06:35
I know you're wondering想知道 if they did meet遇到.
118
383356
2531
06:38
They did meet
119
385887
1249
06:39
She had been recruited應徵 when she was 15,
and she left when she was 17,
120
387136
4003
06:43
so there were a lot
of other complications並發症,
121
391139
2060
06:45
but they did eventually終於 meet遇到.
122
393199
1732
06:47
I don't know if they're together一起 now,
but I can find out. (Laughter笑聲)
123
394931
5275
06:52
But what I can tell you is that
our radio無線電 strategy戰略 was working加工.
124
400206
7971
07:00
The problem問題 is that it was working加工
in the lower降低 ranks行列 of the guerrilla游擊隊.
125
408177
3684
07:04
It was not working加工 with the commanders指揮官,
126
411861
2363
07:06
the people that are
more difficult to replace更換,
127
414224
2211
07:08
because you can easily容易 recruit
but you can't get the older舊的 commanders指揮官.
128
416435
5578
07:14
So we thought, well,
we'll use the same相同 strategy戰略.
129
422013
3683
07:17
We'll have commanders
talking to commanders指揮官.
130
425696
2566
07:20
And we even went as far
as asking ex-commanders前指揮官 of the guerrilla游擊隊
131
428262
3776
07:24
to fly on helicopters直升機 with microphones麥克風
132
432038
2735
07:26
telling告訴 the people that
used to fight鬥爭 with them,
133
434773
3461
07:30
"There is a better life out there,"
134
438234
2113
07:32
"I'm doing good,"
"This is not worth價值 it," etc等等.
135
440347
2577
07:35
But, as you can all imagine想像,
it was very easy簡單 to counteract抵消,
136
442924
5106
07:40
because what was
the guerrilla游擊隊 going to say?
137
448030
2553
07:42
"Yeah, right, if he doesn't do that,
he's going to get killed殺害."
138
450583
3208
07:45
So it was easy簡單, so we were
suddenly突然 left with nothing,
139
453791
4065
07:50
because the guerrilla游擊隊
were spreading傳播 the word
140
457856
2279
07:52
that all of those things are doneDONE
141
460135
2711
07:55
because if they don't do it,
they're in danger危險.
142
462846
5502
08:00
And somebody, some
brilliant輝煌 person in our team球隊,
143
468348
3164
08:03
came來了 back and said,
"You know what I noticed注意到?
144
471512
3638
08:07
I noticed注意到 that around Christmastime聖誕節的時候,
145
475150
3557
08:10
there have been peaks of demobilization復員
146
478707
2691
08:13
since以來 this war戰爭 has started開始."
147
481398
2995
08:16
And that was incredible
08:19
because that led us to think
that we needed需要 to talk to the human人的 being存在
149
487000
5481
08:24
and not to the soldier士兵.
150
492481
1571
08:26
We needed需要 to step away from talking
151
494052
2137
08:28
from government政府 to army軍隊,
from army軍隊 to army軍隊,
152
496189
5270
08:33
and we needed需要 to talk
about the universal普遍 values,
153
501459
3297
08:36
and we needed需要 to talk about humanity人性.
154
504756
2462
08:39
And that was when
the Christmas聖誕 tree happened發生.
155
507218
3374
08:42
This picture圖片 that I have here,

08:44
you see this is the planning規劃
of the Christmas聖誕 trees樹木,
157
512599
3192
08:47
and that man you see there
with the three stars明星,
158
515791
3749

08:58
to give us the helicopters直升機
and the support支持 we needed需要
161
526640
3863
09:02
to put these Christmas聖誕 trees樹木 up,
162
530503
2350
09:05
and he said in that meeting會議
something that I will never forget忘記.
163
532853
3292
09:08
He said, "I want to do this
because being存在 generous慷慨 makes品牌 me stronger,
164

09:17
And I get very emotional
when I remember記得 him
166
545691
2740
09:20
because he was killed殺害 later後來 in combat戰鬥
and we really miss小姐 him,
167
548431
4385
09:25
but I wanted you all to see him,
because he was really, really important重要.
168
552816
6276
09:31
He gave us all the support支持
to put up the first Christmas聖誕 trees樹木.
169
559092
4128
09:35
What happened發生 later後來 is that
the guerrillas游擊隊 who came來了 out
170
563220
2733
09:38
during the Christmas聖誕 tree
operation手術 and all of that
171
565953
3620
09:41
said, "That's really good,
Christmas聖誕 trees樹木 are really cool,
172
569573
3796
09:45
but you know what?
We really don't walk步行 anymore.
173
573369
2530
09:48
We use rivers河流."
174
575899
1452
09:49
So rivers河流 are the highways公路 of the jungle叢林,
175
577351
3387
09:52
and this is something we learned學到了,
176
580738
2197
09:55
and most of the recruiting招聘 was being存在 doneDONE
in and around the river villages村莊.
177
582935
5302
10:00
So we went to these river villages
178
588237
2283
10:02
and we asked the people,
179
590520
1901
10:04
and probably大概 some of them were
direct直接 acquaintances熟人 of the guerrillas游擊隊.
180
592421
3354
10:07
We asked them, "Can you send發送
10:11
We collected over 6,000 messages消息.
182
599769
3390
10:15
Some of them were notes筆記 saying, get out.
183
603159
2646
10:18
Some of them were toys
Some of them were candy
184
605805
2717
10:20
Even people took off their jewelry
their little crosses十字架 and religious宗教 things,
185
608522
4190
10:24
and put them in these floating漂浮的 balls
that we sent發送 down the rivers河流
186
612725
5415
10:30
so that they could be picked採摘的 up at night.
187
618140
2595
10:32
And we sent發送 thousands數千
of these down the rivers河流,
188
620735
2358
10:35
and then picked採摘的 them up
later後來 if they weren't.
189
623093
2170
10:37
But lots of them were picked採摘的 up.
190
625263
1532
10:38
This generated產生, on average平均,
a demobilization復員 every一切 six hours小時,
191
626795
4891
10:43
so this was incredible難以置信 and it was about:
Come home at Christmas
192
631686
4060
10:49
Then came來了 the peace和平 process處理,
193
636920
4081
10:53
and when the peace和平 process處理 started開始,
194
641001
2441
10:55
the whole整個 mindset心態
of the guerrilla游擊隊 changed.
195
643442
2320
10:57
And it changed because
196
645762
2325
11:00
it makes品牌 you think, "Well,
if there's a peace和平 process處理,
197
648087
2749
11:03
this is probably大概 going to be over.
198
650836
1942
11:04
At some point I'm going to get out."
199
652778
2112
11:07
And their fears恐懼 completely全然 changed,
200
654890
2206
11:09
and their fears恐懼 were not about,
"Am I going to get killed殺害?"
201
657096
3228
11:12
Their fears恐懼 were, "Am I
going to be rejected拒絕?
202
660324
3599
11:16
When I get out of this,
am I going to be rejected拒絕?"
203
663923
2809
11:18
So the past過去 Christmas聖誕,
what we did was we asked --
204
666732
3071
11:22
we found發現 27 mothers母親 of guerrillas游擊隊,
205
669803
3747
11:25
and we asked them to give us
pictures圖片 of their children孩子,
206
673550
4234
11:29
when they only could recognize認識 themselves他們自己,
so as not to put their lives生活 in danger危險,
207
677784
4205
11:34
and we asked them to give
the most motherly母愛 message信息 you can get,
208
681989
4276
11:38
which哪一個 is, "Before you were a guerrilla游擊隊,
you were my child兒童,
209
686265
4592
11:43
so come home, I'm waiting等候 for you."
210
690857
2252
11:45
You can see the pictures圖片 here.
I'll show顯示 you a couple一對.

11:55
And these pictures圖片 were placed放置
in many許多 different不同 places地方,
214
703552
5178
12:00
and a lot of them came來了 back,
215
708730
4162
12:05
and it was really, really beautiful美麗.
216
712892
2948
12:08
And then we decided決定 to work with society社會.
217
715840
3475
12:11
So we did mothers母親 around Christmastime聖誕節的時候.
218
719315
2657
12:14
Now let's talk about
the rest休息 of the people.
219
721972
2854
12:17
And you may可能 be aware知道的 of this or not,
but there was a World世界 Cup杯子 this year,
220
724826
5362
12:22
and Colombia哥倫比亞 played發揮 really well,
and it was a unifying統一 moment時刻 for Colombia哥倫比亞.
221
730190
7427
12:29
And what we did was tell the guerrillas
222
737617
3836
12:33
"Come, get out of the jungle叢林.
We're saving保存 a place地點 for you."
223
741453
4057
