ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Drew Berry - Biomedical animator
Drew Berry creates stunning and scientifically accurate animations to illustrate how the molecules in our cell move and interact.

Why you should listen

Drew Berry is a biomedical animator whose scientifically accurate and aesthetically rich visualisations reveal the microscopic world inside our bodies to a wide range of audiences. His animations have exhibited at venues such as the Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Royal Institute of Great Britain and the University of Geneva. In 2010 he received a MacArthur Fellowship "Genius Award".

Drew Berry: Animirani posnetki nevidne biologije

Filmed:

S prostim očesom ne moremo opazovati molekul in njihovega delovanja. Drew Berry želi to spremeniti. Na TEDxSydney predstavi svoje animirane posnetke, ki ustrezajo znanstvenim podatkom in so hkrati zabavni, s tem pa omogoči raziskovalcem opazovanje nevidnih procesov znotraj naših celic.

And that's how I really beganzačel. So let's beginzačeti.
65
157000
3000
Tako sem torej začel. Pa poglejmo.
02:55
This is DNADNA in its classicklasika doubledvojno helixVijačnica formobrazec.

02:59
so it's an accuratenatančno modelmodel of DNADNA.
68

zato gre za pravilen model DNK.
03:01
If we unwindpočitek the doubledvojno helixVijačnica and unzipodpreti patentno zadrgo the two strandsprameni,
69
166000

Če dvojno vijačnico odvijemo in razpremo niza,
03:03
you see these things that look like teethzobje.
70

vidite majhne zobce.
03:05
Those are the lettersčrke of geneticgenetski codeKoda,
71

To so črke genskega zapisa,

03:10
This is what they typicallyobičajno talk about --
73

V mislih imamo torej to,

74

ko govorimo o genskem zapisu.
03:14
But I want to talk about a differentdrugačen aspectvidik of DNADNA scienceznanost,
75
179000
2000
A želel bi predstaviti drugačen pogled na znanost DNK,
03:16
and that is the physicalfizično naturenarava of DNADNA.
76
181000
3000
in sicer fizikalno naravo DNK.
03:19
It's these two strandsprameni that runteči in oppositenasprotno directionsnavodila

3000
Ta dva niza tečeta v nasprotnih smereh,

03:24
But they physicallyfizično runteči in oppositenasprotno directionsnavodila,

03:59
One strandsklop can be copiedkopirati directlyneposredno,
93
224000

En niz se lahko prepiše neposredno

04:04
But things aren'tne so simplepreprosto for the other strandsklop
95
229000

A pri drugem nizu je postopek bolj zapleten,
04:06
because it mustmoraš be copiedkopirati backwardsnazaj.

saj mora biti prepisan v nasprotni smeri.

04:36
This is work from a numberštevilka of yearslet agonazaj,

109
264000
3000
pokazal posodobljeno znanost in tehnologijo.
04:42
So again, we beginzačeti with DNADNA.
110
267000
2000
Še enkrat, začnemo z DNK.
04:44
And it's jigglingjiggling and wigglingwiggling there because of the surroundingokolico soupjuha of moleculesmolekule,
111
269000
3000
Tako miga zaradi mešanice molekul okrog nje,
04:47
whichki I've strippedodlepil away so you can see something.
112
272000
2000
ki pa smo jih odstranili, da lahko vidite bistveno.
04:49
DNADNA is about two nanometersnanometri acrossčez,
113
274000
2000
DNK v premeru meri okrog dva nanometra,
04:51
whichki is really quitečisto tinymajhen.
114
276000
2000
kar je resnično malo.
04:53
But in eachvsak one of your cellscelice,
115
278000
2000
A v vsaki vaši celici je vsak niz DNK
04:55
eachvsak strandsklop of DNADNA is about 30 to 40 millionmilijonov nanometersnanometri long.
116

Pri tem gre le za en sam niz DNK.
05:11
This hugeogromno packagepaket of DNADNA is calledpozval a chromosomekromosom.
122
296000
3000
Ta celoten velik paket DNK pa se imenuje kromosom.
05:14
And we'llbomo come back to chromosomeskromosomi in a minuteminuto.
123
299000
3000
K njim se bomo vrnili čez minuto.
05:17
We're pullingvlečenje out, we're zoomingpovečave out,

05:31
So we're not going to be ablesposoben to do that todaydanes?
130

Torej tega ne bomo mogli pokazati danes?
05:34
No, I'm beingbiti told, "No."

Nato se celice razpolovijo.
06:06
And again, you have billionsmilijarde of cellscelice
144
351000

Še enkrat, milijarda celic gre prav zdaj
06:08

145
353000

skozi ta postopek v vašem telesu.
06:11
Now we're going to rewindprevijanje nazaj and just focusosredotočiti on the chromosomeskromosomi
146
356000
3000
Vrnili se bomo nazaj in osredotočili na kromosome

Spet smo pri tem trenutku delitve.
06:19
The chromosomeskromosomi lineline up.

Kromosomi se poravnajo.
06:21
And if we isolateizolirati just one chromosomekromosom,

Osredotočimo se le na en kromosom,
06:23
we're going to pullpotegnite it out and have a look at its structurestrukturo.
151
368000
2000
ga izvzamemo in si ogledamo njegovo strukturo.
06:25
So this is one of the biggestnajvečji molecularmolekularno structuresstrukture that you have,

06:32
So this is a singlesamski chromosomekromosom.
154
377000

06:49
But what we're going to focusosredotočiti on is this redrdeča regionregija -- I've labeledz oznako it redrdeča here --
161
394000
3000
Osredotočili se bomo na to rdeče označeno območje,

It is obviouslyočitno centralcentralno to the movementpremikanje of the chromosomeskromosomi.
164

3000
To je ključno za gibanje kromosomov.
07:00
We have no ideaideja really as to how it's achievingdoseganje that movementpremikanje.
