ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Antonio Damasio - Neuroscientist
Antonio Damasio's research in neuroscience has shown that emotions play a central role in social cognition and decision-making. His work has had a major influence on current understanding of the neural systems, which underlie memory, language, consciousness.

Why you should listen

Antonio Damasio is a leader in understanding the biological origin of consciousness. He also argues that emotions, far from being barriers to it, are a crucial component of decision-making. He is founder and director of the USC Brain and Creativity Institute, which draws on partners across academic disciplines to use the explosion of new neuroscience results to tackle issues from mental health to societal and global change.

Damasio is the author of Self Comes to Mind: Constructing the Conscious Brain, which was adapted into a musical composition performed by Yo-Yo Ma at the American Museum of Natural History.

And we could take a very simple単純 view見る

it is a mindマインド,
82

2000

whichどの is a flowフロー of mental精神的な imagesイメージ.
83
211000

03:48
And of courseコース consider検討する imagesイメージ
84
213000
2000
03:50
that can be sensory感覚 patternsパターン,
85
215000

91
227000
2000
心です
04:04
But there is something elseelse
92
229000
2000
04:06
that we are all experiencing経験する in this roomルーム.
93
231000
2000
04:08
We are not passive受動的 exhibitors出展者
94
233000
2000
04:10
of visualビジュアル or auditory聴覚
95
235000
3000
04:15
We have selves自己.
97
240000
2000
04:17
We have a Me
98
242000
2000
04:19
that is automatically自動的に presentプレゼント
99
244000
2000
04:21
in our minds right now.
100
246000
2000
04:23
We own自分の our minds.
101
248000
2000
04:25
And we have a senseセンス that it's everyoneみんな of us
102
250000
3000
04:28
that is experiencing経験する this --
103
253000
2000
04:30
not the person who is sitting座っている next to you.
104
255000
3000
04:33
So in order注文 to have a conscious意識的な mindマインド,
105
258000
3000
04:36
you have a self自己 within以内 the conscious意識的な mindマインド.
106
261000
4000
04:40
So a conscious意識的な mindマインド is a mindマインド with a self自己 in it.
107
265000
3000
04:43
The self自己 introduces紹介する the subjective主観的 perspective視点 in the mindマインド,
108
268000
3000
04:46
and we are only fully完全に conscious意識的な
109
271000
2000
04:48
when self自己 comes来る to mindマインド.
110
273000
2000
04:50
So what we need to know to even address住所 this mystery神秘
111
275000
3000
04:53
is, number one, how are minds are put together一緒に in the brain,
112
278000
3000
04:56
and, number two, how selves自己 are constructed建設された.
113
281000
4000
05:00
Now the first part, the first problem問題,
114
285000
3000
05:03
is relatively比較的 easy簡単 -- it's not easy簡単 at all --
115
288000
3000
05:06
but it is something that has been approachedアプローチした gradually徐々に in neuroscience神経科学.
116
291000
4000
05:10
And it's quiteかなり clearクリア that, in order注文 to make minds,
117
295000
3000
05:13
we need to construct構成する neuralニューラル maps地図.
118
298000
3000
05:16
So imagine想像する a gridグリッド, like the one I'm showing表示 you right now,

05:25
And picture画像, if you will,
123
310000

you're going to be ableできる to construct構成する a map地図.

This, of courseコース, is a visualビジュアル map地図 that I'm showing表示 you,

We generate生成する brain maps地図

So let me tell you just a little bitビット about how I came来た to this.
232
571000
3000
09:49
I came来た to this because,
233
574000
2000
09:51
if you're going to have a reference参照 that we know as self自己 --
234
576000

we need to have something that is stable安定した,

10:02
something that does not deviate逸脱する much
238

10:05
from day to day.
239
590000
2000
10:07
Well it so happens起こる that we have a singular特異な body.
240
592000
2000
10:09
We have one body, not two, not three.
241
594000
3000
10:12
And so that is a beginning
242
597000
2000
10:14
There is just one reference参照 pointポイント, whichどの is the body.
243
599000

10:16
But then, of courseコース, the body has manyたくさんの parts部品,

254
623000

10:40
If you deviate逸脱する too much

259
634000

10:51
So we have an in-built内蔵 systemシステム
260
636000
3000
10:54
within以内 our own自分の lives人生
261
639000
2000
10:56
that ensures確実に some kind種類 of continuity連続.
262
641000
3000
10:59
I like to call it an almostほぼ infinite無限 sameness同一性 from day to day.
263
644000
3000
11:02
Because if you don't have that sameness同一性, physiologically生理学的に,
264
647000

11:06
you're going to be sick病気 or you're going to die死ぬ.
265
651000
2000
11:08
So that's one more element素子 for this continuity連続.
266
653000
3000
11:11
And the final最後の thing
267
656000
2000
11:13
is that there is a very tightタイト couplingカップリング

271
666000

11:24
So for example, I'm making作る imagesイメージ of you,

11:34
Howeverしかしながら, there is a close閉じる, permanently永久に maintained維持された bondボンド
276
