ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Antonio Damasio - Neuroscientist
Antonio Damasio's research in neuroscience has shown that emotions play a central role in social cognition and decision-making. His work has had a major influence on current understanding of the neural systems, which underlie memory, language, consciousness.

Why you should listen

Antonio Damasio is a leader in understanding the biological origin of consciousness. He also argues that emotions, far from being barriers to it, are a crucial component of decision-making. He is founder and director of the USC Brain and Creativity Institute, which draws on partners across academic disciplines to use the explosion of new neuroscience results to tackle issues from mental health to societal and global change.

Damasio is the author of Self Comes to Mind: Constructing the Conscious Brain, which was adapted into a musical composition performed by Yo-Yo Ma at the American Museum of Natural History.

2000
00:17
the wonder奇蹟 and the mystery神秘
1
2000
3000
00:20
of conscious意識 minds頭腦.
2
5000
3000
00:23
The wonder奇蹟 is about the fact事實
3
8000
2000
00:25
that we all woke醒來 up this morning早上
4
10000
2000
00:27
and we had with it
5
12000
2000
00:29
the amazing驚人 return返回 of our conscious意識 mind心神.
6
14000
3000
00:32
We recovered恢復 minds頭腦 with a complete完成 sense of self
7
17000
3000
00:35
and a complete完成 sense of our own擁有 existence存在,
8
20000
3000
00:38
yet然而 we hardly幾乎不 ever pause暫停 to consider考慮 this wonder奇蹟.
9
23000
2000
00:40
We should, in fact事實,
10
25000
2000
00:42
because without having this possibility可能性 of conscious意識 minds頭腦,
11
27000
4000
00:46
we would have no knowledge知識 whatsoever任何
12
31000
2000
00:48
about our humanity人性;
13
33000
2000
關於我們人性的知識;
00:50
we would have no knowledge知識 whatsoever任何 about the world世界.
14
35000
3000
00:53
We would have no pains辛勞, but also no joys歡樂.
15
38000
2000
00:55
We would have no access訪問 to love
16
40000
3000
00:58
or to the ability能力 to create創建.
17
43000
3000
01:01
And of course課程, Scott斯科特 Fitzgerald菲茨杰拉德 said famously著名
18
46000
3000
01:04
that "he who invented發明 consciousness意識
19
49000
3000
01:07
would have a lot to be blamed指責 for."
20
52000
3000
01:10
But he also forgot忘記
21
55000
2000
01:12
that without consciousness意識,
22
57000
2000
01:14
he would have no access訪問 to true真正 happiness幸福
23
59000
3000
01:17
and even the possibility可能性 of transcendence超越.
24
62000
2000
01:19
So much for the wonder奇蹟, now for the mystery神秘.
25
64000
3000
01:22
This is a mystery神秘
26
67000
2000
01:24
that has really been extremely非常 hard to elucidate闡發.
27
69000
3000
01:27
All the way back into early philosophy哲學
28
72000
3000
01:30
and certainly當然 throughout始終 the history歷史 of neuroscience神經科學,
29
75000
3000
01:33
this has been one mystery神秘
30
78000
3000
01:36
that has always resisted抵制 elucidation澄清,
31
81000
2000
01:38
has got major重大的 controversies爭議.
32
83000
2000
01:40
And there are actually其實 many許多 people
33
85000
2000
01:42
that think we should not even touch觸摸 it;
34
87000
2000
甚至覺得我們不該碰它;
01:44
we should just leave離開 it alone單獨, it's not to be solved解決了.
35
89000
2000
01:46
I don't believe that,
36
91000
2000
01:48
and I think the situation情況 is changing改變.
37
93000
2000
01:50
It would be ridiculous荒謬 to claim要求
38
95000
2000
01:52
that we know how we make consciousness意識
39
97000
3000
01:55
in our brains大腦,
40
100000
2000
01:57
but we certainly當然 can begin開始
41
102000
2000
01:59
to approach途徑 the question,
42
104000
2000
02:01
and we can begin開始 to see the shape形狀 of a solution.
43
106000
3000
02:04
And one more wonder奇蹟 to celebrate慶祝
44
109000
3000
02:07
is the fact事實 that we have imaging成像 technologies技術
45
112000
4000
02:11
that now allow允許 us to go inside the human人的 brain
46
116000
4000
02:15
and be able能夠 to do, for example,
47
120000
2000
02:17
what you're seeing眼看 right now.
48
122000
2000
02:19
These are images圖片 that come from Hanna漢娜 Damasio's達馬西奧的 lab實驗室,
49
124000
3000
02:22
and which哪一個 show顯示 you, in a living活的 brain,
50
127000
3000
02:25
the reconstruction重建 of that brain.
51
130000
2000
02:27
And this is a person who is alive.
52
132000
2000
02:29
This is not a person
53
134000
2000
02:31
that is being存在 studied研究 at autopsy屍檢.
54
136000
3000
02:34
And even more --
55
139000
2000
02:36
and this is something that one can be really amazed吃驚 about --
56
141000
3000
02:39
is what I'm going to show顯示 you next下一個,
57
144000
2000
02:41
which哪一個 is going underneath the surface表面 of the brain
58
146000
3000
02:44
and actually其實 looking in the living活的 brain
59
149000
3000
02:50
So all of those colored有色 lines
61
155000
3000
02:53
correspond對應 to bunches of axons軸突,
62
158000
3000
02:56
the fibers纖維 that join加入 cell細胞 bodies身體
63
161000
2000
02:58
to synapses突觸.
64
163000
3000
03:01
And I'm sorry to disappoint辜負 you, they don't come in color顏色.
65
166000
2000
03:03
But at any rate, they are there.
66
168000
3000
03:06
The colors顏色 are codes代碼 for the direction方向,
67
171000
2000
03:08
from whether是否 it is back to front面前
68
173000
2000
03:10
or vice versa反之亦然.
69
175000
2000
03:12
At any rate, what is consciousness意識?
70
177000
3000
03:15
What is a conscious意識 mind心神?
71
180000
2000
03:17
And we could take a very simple簡單 view視圖
72
182000
2000
03:19
and say, well, it is that which哪一個 we lose失去
73
184000
4000
03:23
when we fall秋季 into deep sleep睡覺 without dreams,
74
188000
5000
03:28
or when we go under anesthesia麻醉,
75
193000
2000
03:30
and it is what we regain恢復
76
195000
2000
03:32
when we recover恢復 from sleep睡覺
77
197000
2000
03:34
or from anesthesia麻醉.
78
199000
2000
03:36
But what is exactly究竟 that stuff東東 that we lose失去 under anesthesia麻醉,
79
201000
4000
03:40
or when we are in deep, dreamless sleep睡覺?
80
205000
2000
03:42
Well first of all,
81
207000
2000
03:44
it is a mind心神,
82
209000
2000
03:46
which哪一個 is a flow of mental心理 images圖片.
83
211000
2000
03:48
And of course課程 consider考慮 images圖片
84
213000
2000
03:50
that can be sensory感覺的 patterns模式,
85
215000
2000
03:52
visual視覺, such這樣 as you're having right now
86
217000
2000
03:54
in relation關係 to the stage階段 and me,
87
219000
2000
03:56
or auditory聽覺 images圖片,
88
221000
2000
03:58
as you are having now in relation關係 to my words.
89
223000
2000
04:00
That flow of mental心理 images圖片
90
225000
2000
04:02
is mind心神.
91
227000
2000
04:04
But there is something else其他
92
229000
2000
04:06
that we are all experiencing經歷 in this room房間.
93
231000
2000
04:08
We are not passive被動 exhibitors參展商
94
233000
2000
04:10
of visual視覺 or auditory聽覺
95
235000
3000
04:13
or tactile images圖片.
96
238000
2000
04:15
We have selves自我.
97
240000
2000
04:17
We have a Me
98
242000
2000
04:19
that is automatically自動 present當下
99
244000
2000
04:21
in our minds頭腦 right now.
100
246000
2000
04:23
We own擁有 our minds頭腦.
101
248000
2000
04:25
And we have a sense that it's everyone大家 of us
102
250000
3000
04:28
that is experiencing經歷 this --
103
253000
2000
04:30
not the person who is sitting坐在 next下一個 to you.
104
255000
3000
04:33
So in order訂購 to have a conscious意識 mind心神,
105
258000
3000
04:36
you have a self within the conscious意識 mind心神.
106
261000
4000
04:40
So a conscious意識 mind心神 is a mind心神 with a self in it.
107
265000
3000
04:43
The self introduces介紹 the subjective主觀 perspective透視 in the mind心神,
108
268000
3000
04:46
and we are only fully充分 conscious意識
109
271000
2000
04:48
when self comes to mind心神.
110
273000
2000
04:50
So what we need to know to even address地址 this mystery神秘
111
275000
3000
04:53
is, number one, how are minds頭腦 are put together一起 in the brain,
112
278000
3000
04:56
and, number two, how selves自我 are constructed.
113
281000
4000
05:00
Now the first part部分, the first problem問題,
114
285000
3000
05:03
is relatively相對 easy簡單 -- it's not easy簡單 at all --
115
288000
3000
05:06
but it is something that has been approached接近 gradually逐漸 in neuroscience神經科學.
116
291000
4000
05:10
And it's quite相當 clear明確 that, in order訂購 to make minds頭腦,
117
295000
3000
05:13
we need to construct構造 neural神經 maps地圖.
118
298000
3000
05:16
So imagine想像 a grid, like the one I'm showing展示 you right now,
119
301000
3000
05:19
and now imagine想像, within that grid,
120
304000
2000
05:21
that two-dimensional二維 sheet,
121
306000
2000
05:25
And picture圖片, if you will,
123
310000
2000
05:27
a billboard廣告牌, a digital數字 billboard廣告牌,
124
312000
2000
05:29
where you have elements分子
125
314000
2000
05:31
that can be either lit發光的 or not.
126
316000
2000
05:33
And depending根據 on how you create創建 the pattern模式
127
318000
3000
05:36
of lighting燈光 or not lighting燈光,
128
321000
3000
05:39
the digital數字 elements分子,
129
324000
2000
05:41
or, for that matter, the neurons神經元 in the sheet,
130
326000
2000
05:43
you're going to be able能夠 to construct構造 a map地圖.
131
328000
2000
05:45
This, of course課程, is a visual視覺 map地圖 that I'm showing展示 you,
132
330000
3000
05:48
but this applies適用 to any kind of map地圖 --
133
333000
2000
05:50
auditory聽覺, for example, in relation關係 to sound聲音 frequencies頻率,
134
335000
3000
05:53
or to the maps地圖 that we construct構造 with our skin皮膚
135
338000
3000
05:56
in relation關係 to an object目的 that we palpate觸診.
136
341000
3000
05:59
Now to bring帶來 home the point
137
344000
2000
06:01
of how close it is --
138
346000
2000
06:03
the relationship關係 between之間 the grid of neurons神經元
139
348000
3000
06:06
and the topographical地形 arrangement安排
140
351000
2000
06:08
of the activity活動 of the neurons神經元
141
353000
2000
06:10
and our mental心理 experience經驗 --
142
355000
2000
06:12
I'm going to tell you a personal個人 story故事.
143
357000
2000
06:14
So if I cover my left eye --
144
359000
3000
06:17
I'm talking about me personally親自, not all of you --
145
362000
2000
06:19
if I cover my left eye,
146
364000
2000
06:21
I look at the grid -- pretty漂亮 much like the one I'm showing展示 you.
147
366000
3000
06:24
Everything is nice不錯 and fine and perpendicular垂直.
148
369000
3000
06:27
But sometime某時 ago, I discovered發現
149
372000
2000
06:29
that if I cover my left eye,
150
374000
3000
06:32
instead代替 what I get is this.
151
377000
2000
06:34
I look at the grid and I see a warping
152
379000
3000
06:37
at the edge邊緣 of my central-left中央偏左 field領域.
153
382000
3000
06:40
Very odd -- I've analyzed分析 this for a while.
154
385000
2000
06:42
But sometime某時 ago,
155
387000
3000
06:45
through通過 the help of an opthamologist眼科醫生 colleague同事 of mine,
156
390000
3000
06:50
who developed發達 a laser激光 scanner掃描器 of the retina視網膜,
158
395000
3000
06:53
I found發現 out the the following以下.
159
398000
2000
06:55
If I scan掃描 my retina視網膜
160
400000
2000
06:57
through通過 the horizontal plane平面 that you see there in the little corner,
161
402000
3000
07:00
what I get is the following以下.
162
405000
2000
07:02
On the right side, my retina視網膜 is perfectly完美 symmetrical對稱.
163
407000
3000
07:05
You see the going down towards the fovea小窩
164
410000
3000
07:08
where the optic視神經 nerve神經 begins開始.
165
413000
2000
07:10
But on my left retina視網膜 there is a bump磕碰,
166
415000
2000
07:12
which哪一個 is marked there by the red arrow箭頭.
167
417000
2000
07:14
And it corresponds對應 to a little cyst囊腫
168
419000
2000
07:16
that is located位於 below下面.
169
421000
2000
07:18
And that is exactly究竟 what causes原因
170
423000
3000
07:21
the warping翹曲 of my visual視覺 image圖片.
171
426000
3000
07:24
So just think of this:
172
429000
2000
07:26
you have a grid of neurons神經元,
173
431000
2000
07:28
and now you have a plane平面 mechanical機械 change更改
174
433000
4000
07:32
in the position位置 of the grid,
175
437000
2000
07:34
and you get a warping翹曲 of your mental心理 experience經驗.
176
439000
2000
07:36
So this is how close
177
441000
2000
07:38
your mental心理 experience經驗
178
443000
2000
07:40
and the activity活動 of the neurons神經元 in the retina視網膜,
179
445000
3000
07:43
which哪一個 is a part部分 of the brain located位於 in the eyeball眼球,
180
448000
3000
07:46
or, for that matter, a sheet of visual視覺 cortex皮質.
181
451000
3000
07:49
So from the retina
182
454000
2000
07:51
you go onto visual視覺 cortex皮質.
183
456000
2000
07:53
And of course課程, the brain adds增加 on
184
458000
2000
07:55
a lot of information信息
185
460000
2000
07:57
to what is going on
186
462000
2000
07:59
in the signals信號 that come from the retina視網膜.
187
464000
2000
08:01
And in that image圖片 there,
188
466000
2000
08:03
you see a variety品種 of islands島嶼
189
468000
2000
08:05
of what I call image-making形象塑造 regions地區 in the brain.
190
470000
3000
08:08
You have the green綠色 for example,
191
473000
2000
08:10
that corresponds對應 to tactile information信息,
192
475000
2000
08:12
or the blue藍色 that corresponds對應 to auditory聽覺 information信息.
193
477000
3000
08:15
And something else其他 that happens發生
194
480000
2000
08:17
is that those image-making形象塑造 regions地區
195
482000
3000
08:20
where you have the plotting繪製
196
485000
2000
08:22
of all these neural神經 maps地圖,
197
487000
2000
08:24
can then provide提供 signals信號
198
489000
2000
08:26
to this ocean海洋 of purple紫色 that you see around,
199
491000
3000
08:29
which哪一個 is the association協會 cortex皮質,
200
494000
2000
08:31
where you can make records記錄 of what went on
201
496000
3000
08:34
in those islands島嶼 of image-making形象塑造.
202
499000
2000
08:36
And the great beauty美女
203
501000
2000
08:38
is that you can then go from memory記憶,
204
503000
3000
08:41
out of those association協會 cortices皮層,
205
506000
2000
08:43
and produce生產 back images圖片
206
508000
3000
08:46
in the very same相同 regions地區 that have perception知覺.
207
511000
3000
08:49
So think about how wonderfully奇妙 convenient方便 and lazy
208
514000
3000
08:52
the brain is.
209
517000
2000
08:54
So it provides提供 certain某些 areas
210
519000
2000
08:56
for perception知覺 and image-making形象塑造.
211
521000
2000
08:58
And those are exactly究竟 the same相同
212
523000
2000
09:00
that are going to be used for image-making形象塑造
213
525000
3000
09:03
when we recall召回 information信息.
214
528000
3000
09:06
So far the mystery神秘 of the conscious意識 mind心神
215
531000
3000
09:09
is diminishing逐漸縮小的 a little bit
216
534000
2000
09:11
because we have a general一般 sense
217
536000
2000
09:13
of how we make these images圖片.
218
538000
2000
09:15
But what about the self?
219
540000
2000
09:17
The self is really the elusive難以捉摸 problem問題.
220
542000
3000
09:20
And for a long time,
221
545000
2000
09:22
people did not even want to touch觸摸 it,
222
547000
2000
09:24
because they'd他們會 say,
223
549000
2000
09:26
"How can you have this reference參考 point, this stability穩定性,
224
551000
3000
09:29
that is required需要 to maintain保持
225
554000
2000
09:31
the continuity連續性 of selves自我 day after day?"
226
556000
3000
09:34
And I thought about a solution to this problem問題.
227
559000
3000
09:37
It's the following以下.
228
562000
2000
09:39
We generate生成 brain maps地圖
229
564000
2000
09:41
of the body's身體的 interior室內
230
566000
2000
09:43
and use them as the reference參考 for all other maps地圖.
231
568000
3000
09:46
So let me tell you just a little bit about how I came來了 to this.
232
571000
3000
09:49
I came來了 to this because,
233
574000
2000
09:51
if you're going to have a reference參考 that we know as self --
234
576000
4000
09:55
the Me, the I
235
580000
2000
09:57
in our own擁有 processing處理 --
236
582000
3000
10:00
we need to have something that is stable穩定,
237
585000
2000
10:02
something that does not deviate偏離 much
238
587000
3000
10:05
from day to day.
239
590000
2000
10:07
Well it so happens發生 that we have a singular單數 body身體.
240
592000
2000
10:09
We have one body身體, not two, not three.
241
594000
3000
10:12
And so that is a beginning開始.
242
597000
2000
10:14
There is just one reference參考 point, which哪一個 is the body身體.
243
599000
2000
10:16
But then, of course課程, the body身體 has many許多 parts部分,
244
601000
3000
10:19
and things grow增長 at different不同 rates利率,
245
604000
2000
10:21
and they have different不同 sizes大小 and different不同 people;
246
606000
2000
大小會不同,異人而已;
10:23
however然而, not so with the interior室內.
247
608000
3000
10:26
The things that have to do
248
611000
2000
10:28
with what is known已知 as our internal內部 milieu環境 --
249
613000
2000
10:30
for example, the whole整個 management管理
250
615000
2000
10:32
of the chemistries化學品 within our body身體
251
617000
2000
10:34
are, in fact事實, extremely非常 maintained保持
252
619000
2000
10:36
day after day
253
621000
2000
10:38
for one very good reason原因.
254
623000
2000
10:40
If you deviate偏離 too much
255
625000
2000
10:42
in the parameters參數
256
627000
2000
10:44
that are close to the midline中線
257
629000
2000
參數
10:46
of that life-permitting生命許可 survival生存 range範圍,
258
631000
3000
10:49
you go into disease疾病 or death死亡.
259
634000
2000
10:51
So we have an in-built內置 system系統
260
636000
3000
10:54
within our own擁有 lives生活
261
639000
2000
10:56
that ensures確保 some kind of continuity連續性.
262
641000
3000
10:59
I like to call it an almost幾乎 infinite無窮 sameness千篇一律 from day to day.
263
644000
3000
11:02
Because if you don't have that sameness千篇一律, physiologically生理,
264
647000
4000
11:06
you're going to be sick生病 or you're going to die.
265
651000
2000
11:08
So that's one more element元件 for this continuity連續性.
266
653000
3000
11:11
And the final最後 thing
267
656000
2000
11:13
is that there is a very tight coupling耦合
268
658000
2000
11:15
between之間 the regulation of our body身體 within the brain
269
660000
4000
11:19
and the body身體 itself本身,
270
664000
2000
11:21
unlike不像 any other coupling耦合.
271
666000
3000
11:24
So for example, I'm making製造 images圖片 of you,
272
669000
2000
11:26
but there's no physiological生理 bond
273
671000
3000
11:29
between之間 the images圖片 I have of you as an audience聽眾
274
674000
3000
11:32
and my brain.
275
677000
2000
11:34
However然而, there is a close, permanently永久 maintained保持 bond
276
679000
4000
11:38
between之間 the body身體 regulating調節 parts部分 of my brain
277
683000
3000
11:41
and my own擁有 body身體.
278
686000
2000
11:43
So here's這裡的 how it looks容貌. Look at the region地區 there.
279
688000
3000
11:46
There is the brain stem in between之間 the cerebral顱內 cortex皮質
280
691000
3000
11:49
and the spinal cord.
281
694000
2000
11:51
And it is within that region地區
282
696000
2000
11:53
that I'm going to highlight突出 now
283
698000
2000
11:55
that we have this housing住房
284
700000
3000
11:58
of all the life-regulation生活調節 devices設備
285
703000
3000
12:01
of the body身體.
286
706000
2000
12:03
This is so specific具體 that, for example,
287
708000
3000
12:06
if you look at the part部分 that is covered覆蓋 in red
288
711000
3000
12:09
in the upper part部分 of the brain stem,
289
714000
2000
12:11
if you damage損傷 that as a result結果 of a stroke行程, for example,
290
716000
3000
12:14
what you get is coma昏迷
291
719000
2000
12:16
or vegetative營養 state,
292
721000
2000
12:18
which哪一個 is a state, of course課程,
293
723000
2000
12:20
in which哪一個 your mind心神 disappears消失,
294
725000
2000
12:22
your consciousness意識 disappears消失.
295
727000
3000
12:25
What happens發生 then actually其實
296
730000
2000
12:27
is that you lose失去 the grounding接地 of the self,
297
732000
3000
12:30
you have no longer access訪問 to any feeling感覺 of your own擁有 existence存在,
298
735000
3000
12:33
and, in fact事實, there can be images圖片 going on,
299
738000
3000
12:36
being存在 formed形成 in the cerebral顱內 cortex皮質,
300
741000
2000
12:38
except you don't know they're there.
301
743000
2000
12:40
You have, in effect影響, lost丟失 consciousness意識
302
745000
3000
12:43
when you have damage損傷 to that red section部分 of the brain stem.
303
748000
4000
12:47
But if you consider考慮 the green綠色 part部分 of the brain stem,
304
752000
3000
12:50
nothing like that happens發生.
305
755000
2000
12:52
It is that specific具體.
306
757000
2000
12:54
So in that green綠色 component零件 of the brain stem,
307
759000
3000
12:57
if you damage損傷 it, and often經常 it happens發生,
308
762000
3000
13:00
what you get is complete完成 paralysis麻痺,
309
765000
2000
13:02
but your conscious意識 mind心神 is maintained保持.
310
767000
3000
13:05
You feel, you know, you have a fully充分 conscious意識 mind心神
311
770000
3000
13:08
that you can report報告 very indirectly間接.
312
773000
3000
13:11
This is a horrific可怕的 condition條件. You don't want to see it.
313
776000
3000
13:14
And people are, in fact事實, imprisoned囚禁
314
779000
2000
13:16
within their own擁有 bodies身體,
315
781000
2000
13:18
but they do have a mind心神.
316
783000
2000
13:20
There was a very interesting有趣 film電影,
317
785000
2000
13:22
one of the rare罕見 good films影片 doneDONE
318
787000
2000
13:24
about a situation情況 like this,
319
789000
2000
13:26
by Julian朱利安 Schnabel施納貝爾 some years年份 ago
320
791000
2000
13:28
about a patient患者 that was in that condition條件.
321
793000
3000
13:31
So now I'm going to show顯示 you a picture圖片.
322
796000
2000
13:33
I promise諾言 not to say anything about this,
323
798000
2000
13:35
except this is to frighten嚇唬 you.
324
800000
2000
13:37
It's just to tell you
325
802000
2000
13:39
that in that red section部分 of the brain stem,
326
804000
3000
13:42
there are, to make it simple簡單,
327
807000
2000
13:44
all those little squares廣場 that correspond對應 to modules模塊
328
809000
3000
13:47
that actually其實 make brain maps地圖
329
812000
3000
13:50
of different不同 aspects方面 of our interior室內,
330
815000
3000
13:53
different不同 aspects方面 of our body身體.
331
818000
2000
13:55
They are exquisitely玲瓏 topographic地形
332
820000
3000
13:58
and they are exquisitely玲瓏 interconnected互聯
333
823000
2000
14:00
in a recursive遞歸 pattern模式.
334
825000
2000
14:02
And it is out of this and out of this tight coupling耦合
335
827000
3000
14:05
between之間 the brain stem and the body身體
336
830000
2000
14:07
that I believe -- and I could be wrong錯誤,
337
832000
2000
14:09
but I don't think I am --
338
834000
2000
14:11
that you generate生成 this mapping製圖 of the body身體
339
836000
3000
14:14
that provides提供 the grounding接地 for the self
340
839000
3000
14:17
and that comes in the form形成 of feelings情懷 --
341
842000
2000
14:19
primordial原始 feelings情懷, by the way.
342
844000
2000
14:21
So what is the picture圖片 that we get here?
343
846000
2000
14:23
Look at "cerebral顱內 cortex皮質," look at "brain stem,"
344
848000
2000
14:25
look at "body身體,"
345
850000
2000
14:27
and you get the picture圖片 of the interconnectivity互聯互通
346
852000
3000
14:30
in which哪一個 you have the brain stem providing提供 the grounding接地 for the self
347
855000
4000
14:34
in a very tight interconnection互連 with the body身體.
348
859000
3000
14:37
And you have the cerebral顱內 cortex皮質
349
862000
2000
14:39
providing提供 the great spectacle場面 of our minds頭腦
350
864000
3000
14:42
with the profusion豐富 of images圖片
351
867000
2000
14:44
that are, in fact事實, the contents內容 of our minds頭腦
352
869000
3000
14:47
and that we normally一般 pay工資 most attention注意 to,
353
872000
3000
14:50
as we should, because that's really
354
875000
2000
14:52
the film電影 that is rolling壓延 in our minds頭腦.
355
877000
2000
14:54
But look at the arrows
356
879000
2000
14:56
They're not there for looks
357
881000
2000
14:58
They're there because there's this very close interaction
15:01
You cannot不能 have a conscious意識 mind心神
359
886000
2000
15:03
if you don't have the interaction相互作用
360
888000
2000
15:05
between之間 cerebral顱內 cortex皮質 and brain stem.
361
890000
2000
15:07
You cannot不能 have a conscious意識 mind心神
362
892000
2000
15:09
if you don't have the interaction相互作用
363
894000
2000
15:11
between之間 the brain stem and the body身體.
364
896000
2000
15:13
Another另一個 thing that is interesting有趣
365
898000
2000
15:15
is that the brain stem that we have
366
900000
2000
15:17
is shared共享 with a variety品種 of other species種類.
367
902000
2000
15:21
the design設計 of the brain stem is very similar類似 to ours我們的,
369
906000
3000
15:24
which哪一個 is one of the reasons原因 why I think
370
909000
2000
15:26
those other species種類 have conscious意識 minds頭腦 like we do.
371
911000
3000
15:29
Except that they're not as rich豐富 as ours我們的,
372
914000
3000
15:32
because they don't have a cerebral顱內 cortex皮質 like we do.
373
917000
2000
15:34
That's where the difference區別 is.
374
919000
2000
15:36
And I strongly非常 disagree不同意 with the idea理念
375
921000
3000
15:39
that consciousness意識 should be considered考慮
376
924000
3000
15:42
as the great product產品 of the cerebral顱內 cortex皮質.
377
927000
2000
15:44
Only the wealth財富 of our minds頭腦 is,
378
929000
2000
15:46
not the very fact事實 that we have a self
379
931000
3000
15:49
that we can refer參考
380
934000
2000
15:51
to our own擁有 existence存在,
381
936000
2000
15:53
and that we have any sense of person.
382
938000
4000
15:57
Now there are three levels水平 of self to consider考慮 --
383
942000
3000
16:00
the proto, the core核心 and the autobiographical自傳.
384
945000
3000
16:03
The first two are shared共享
385
948000
2000
16:05
with many許多, many許多 other species種類,
386
950000
2000
16:07
and they are really coming未來 out
387
952000
2000
16:09
largely大部分 of the brain stem
388
954000
2000
16:11
and whatever隨你 there is of cortex皮質 in those species種類.
389
956000
3000
16:14
It's the autobiographical自傳 self
390
959000
2000
16:16
which哪一個 some species種類 have, I think.
391
961000
2000
16:18
Cetaceans鯨類 and primates靈長類動物 have also
392
963000
3000
16:21
an autobiographical自傳 self to a certain某些 degree.
393
966000
2000
16:23
And everybody's每個人的 dogs小狗 at home
394
968000
2000
16:25
have an autobiographical自傳 self to a certain某些 degree.
395
970000
3000
16:28
But the novelty新奇 is here.
396
973000
2000
16:30
The autobiographical自傳 self is built內置
397
975000
2000
16:32
on the basis基礎 of past過去 memories回憶
398
977000
2000
16:34
and memories回憶 of the plans計劃 that we have made製作;
399
979000
3000
還有我們所做計畫的記憶上;
16:37
it's the lived生活 past過去 and the anticipated預期 future未來.
400
982000
3000
16:40
And the autobiographical自傳 self
401
985000
2000
16:47
And out of that came來了 the instruments儀器 of culture文化 --
404
992000
3000
16:54
And it is within that culture文化
407
999000
2000
16:56
that we really can get --
408
1001000
2000
16:58
and this is the novelty新奇 --
409
1003000
2000
17:00
something that is not entirely完全 set by our biology生物學.
410
1005000
4000
17:04
It is developed發達 in the cultures文化.
411
1009000
2000
17:06
It developed發達 in collectives集體 of human人的 beings眾生.
412
1011000
4000
17:10
And this is, of course課程, the culture文化
413
1015000
2000
17:12
where we have developed發達 something that I like to call
414
1017000
3000
17:17
And finally最後, you could rightly正當地 ask,
416
1022000
2000
17:19
why care關心 about this?
417
1024000
2000
17:21
Why care關心 if it is the brain stem or the cerebral顱內 cortex皮質
418
1026000
3000
17:24
and how this is made製作?
419
1029000
2000
17:26
Three reasons原因. First, curiosity好奇心.
420
1031000
2000
17:30
and humans人類 most of all.
422
1035000
2000
17:32
And if we are interested有興趣, for example,
423
1037000
3000
17:35
in the fact事實 that anti-gravity反重力
424

2000

17:39
why should we not be interested有興趣 in what is going on
426
1044000
2000
17:41
inside of human人的 beings眾生?
427
1046000
3000
17:46

17:52

17:54
