Why you should listen

Larry Smith is a professor of economics at University of Waterloo. The most notable start-up he advised in its infancy is Research in Motion (RIM), maker of the BlackBerry.

"What you see in the TED Talk is essentially thirty years of Smith’s frustrations reaching a boiling point," wrote Carmine Gallo in Forbes. “'Wasted talent is a waste I cannot stand,' Smith told me."

Those tryingproberen to have good careerscarrières are going to failmislukken,
10
38020
2046
Zij die een goede carrière willen, zullen falen,
00:42
because, really, good jobsjobs are now disappearingverdwijnen.
11
40066
3976
want goede jobs zijn aan het verdwijnen.
00:46
There are great jobsjobs and great careerscarrières,
12
44042
3025
Er zijn fantastische jobs en fantastische carrières.
00:49
and then there are the high-workloadhoge werkdruk, high-stressHigh-stress,
13

En er zijn jobs met hoge werkdruk, veel stress,

00:56
and practicallybijna nothing in betweentussen.
15
54083
1934
En vrijwel niets ertussenin.
00:58
So the people looking for good jobsjobs are going to failmislukken.
16
56017
2035
Dus zij die goede jobs zoeken, zullen falen.
01:00
I'm going to talk about those looking for great jobsjobs, great
17
58052
2996
Ik ga praten over hen die een fantastische job

18
61048
4002
en carrière zoeken
en waarom jullie zullen falen.
01:07
First reasonreden is that no matterer toe doen how manyveel timestijden people tell you,
19
65050
6025
Eerste reden: hoe vaak anderen ook zeggen:
01:13
"If you want a great careercarrière, you have to pursuena te streven your passionpassie,
20
71075
3953
"Een fantastische carrière betekent
01:17
you have to pursuena te streven your dreamsdromen, you have to pursuena te streven,
21
75028
3003
je passie, dromen en
01:20
the greatestbeste fascinationfascinatie in your life,"
22
78031
3016
je grootste fascinatie volgen."
01:23
you hearhoren it again and again and then you decidebesluiten
23
81047
2032
Je hoort het telkens opnieuw en dan beslis je om
01:25
not to do it. It doesn't matterer toe doen how manyveel timestijden you downloaddownloaden
24
83079
4008
het niet te doen. Het maakt niet uit hoe vaak je
01:29
StevenSteven J.'s's StanfordStanford commencementaanvang addressadres,
25
87087
4926
Steve Jobs openingsspeech in Stanford downloadt.
01:34
you still look at it and decidebesluiten not to do it.
26
92013
3030
Je bekijkt hem en doet niets.
01:37
I'm not quiteheel sure why you decidebesluiten not to do it.
27
95043
2039
Ik weet niet echt waarom.
01:39
You're too lazylui to do it. It's too hardhard.
28
97082
2000
Je bent te lui. Het is te moeilijk.
01:41
You're afraidbang if you look for your passionpassie and don't find it,
29
99082
2949
Je bent bang dat als je je passie niet vindt,
01:44
you'llje zult feel like you're an idiotidioot, so then you make excusesexcuses
30
102031
3010
je voor schut staat.
Je verzint excuses
01:47
about why you're not going to look for your passionpassie.
31
105041
2994
waarom je niet op zoek gaat naar je passie.
01:50
And they are excusesexcuses, ladiesDames and gentlemenmijne heren.
32
108035
1062
En het zijn excuses.
01:51
We're going to go throughdoor a wholegeheel long listlijst, your creativitycreativiteit,
33
109097
2978
Je spit een hele lijst
met creatieve excuses door.
01:54
and thinkinghet denken of excusesexcuses not to do what you really
34
112075
2992
Excuses waarom je echt niet zou doen wat je
01:57
need to do if you want to have a great careercarrière.
35
115067
2997
moet doen voor een fantastische carrière.
02:00
So, for examplevoorbeeld, one of your great excusesexcuses is,
36
118064
6005
Eén van jullie fantastische excuses is
02:06
"Well, great careerscarrières are really and trulywerkelijk, for mostmeest people,
37
124069
5001
dat een fantastische carrière
02:11
just a matterer toe doen of luckgeluk, so I'm going to standstand around,
38
129070
3948
een kwestie van geluk is.
02:15
I'm going to try to be luckyLucky, and if I'm luckyLucky,
39
133018
2068
En je staat te wachten op geluk.
02:17
I'll have a great careercarrière. If not, I'll have a good careercarrière."
40
135086
2998
Heb je geluk, dan krijg je een fantastische carrière
en anders een goede.
02:20
But a good careercarrière is an impossibilityonmogelijkheid, so that's not going to work.
41
138084
3948
Maar er zijn geen goede carrières,
dus dat werkt niet.
02:24
Then, your other excuseexcuus is, "Yes, there are specialspeciaal people
42
142032
3987
Een ander excuus: "Er zijn mensen die
02:28
who pursuena te streven theirhun passionspassies, but they are geniusesgenieën.
43
146019
3997
hun passies volgen, maar zij zijn genieën.
02:32
They are StevenSteven J. I'm not a geniusgenie.
44
150016
3027
Zij zijn Steve Job. Ik ben geen genie.
02:35
When I was fivevijf, I thought I was a geniusgenie,
45
153043
2959
Toen ik vijf was, dacht ik van wel,
02:38
but my professorsprofessoren have beatengeslagen that ideaidee
46
156002
2002
maar op school sloegen ze dat idee
02:40
out of my headhoofd long sincesinds." (LaughterGelach) MmMm?
47
158004
3018
er al snel uit." (Gelach)
02:43
"And now I know I am completelyhelemaal competentcompetent."
48
161022
4058
"Ik weet nu dat ik volledig competent ben."
02:47
Now, you see, if this was 1950,
49
165080
2972
In 1950
02:50
beingwezen completelyhelemaal competentcompetent,
50
168052
2967
leverde volledig competent zijn
02:53
that would have givengegeven you a great careercarrière.
51
171019
2023
je een fantastische carrière op.
02:55
But guessraden what? This is almostbijna 2012, and sayinggezegde
52
173042
4005
Maar nu, bijna in 2012,
02:59
to the worldwereld-, "I am totallyhelemaal, completelyhelemaal competentcompetent,"
53
177047
4013
is "Ik ben volledig competent"
03:03
is damningvernietigend yourselfjezelf with the faintestflauw of praiselof.
54
181060
4025
niet genoeg.
03:07
And then, of courseCursus, anothereen ander excuseexcuus:
55
185085
2933
Nog een excuus:
03:10
"Well, I would do this, I would do this, but, but,
56
188018
3037
"Ik zou dit willen maar,
03:13
well, after all, I'm not weirdvreemd.
57
191055
4042
ik ben niet raar."
03:17
EverybodyIedereen knowsweet that people who pursuena te streven theirhun passionspassies
58
195097
2954
Iedereen weet dat mensen die hun dromen najagen
03:20
are somewhatenigszins obsessiveobsessief. A little strangevreemd? MmMm? MmMm? Okay?
59
198051
4977
wat obsessief en een beetje vreemd zijn.
03:25
You know, a fine linelijn betweentussen madnesswaanzin and geniusgenie.
60
203028
3021
De lijn tussen waanzin en genialiteit is dun.
03:28
I'm not weirdvreemd. I've readlezen StevenSteven J.'s's biographybiografie.
61
206049
4046
Ik ben niet raar.
Ik heb Steve Jobs biografie gelezen.
03:32
Oh my goodnessgoedheid. I am not that personpersoon. I am niceleuk.
62
210095
3952
Zo ben ik niet. Ik ben aardig.
03:36
I am normalnormaal. I'm a niceleuk, normalnormaal personpersoon,
63
214047
3004
Ik ben een normale en aardige mens.
03:39
and niceleuk, normalnormaal people
64
217051
2013
Aardige, normale mensen
03:41
don't have passionpassie.
65
219064
3968
hebben geen passie.
03:45
AhAh. But I still want a great careercarrière.
66
223032
2981
Maar ik wil nog steeds een fantastische carrière.
03:48
I'm not preparedbereid to pursuena te streven my passionpassie, so I know
67
226013
2024
Ik ga mijn passie niet volgen. Maar ik weet
03:50
what I'm going to do, because I have, I have a solutionoplossing,
68
228037
2972
wat ik ga doen, want ik heb een oplossing.
03:53
I have a strategystrategie.
69
231009
1999
Ik heb een strategie.
03:55
It's the one MommyMama and DaddyPapa told me about.
70
233008
2018
Het is die waar mama en papa over vertelden.
03:57
MommyMama and DaddyPapa told me that if I workedwerkte hardhard,
71
235026
3027
Mama en papa zeiden dat als ik hard werkte,
04:00
I'd have a good careercarrière. So, if you work hardhard
72
238053
3957
ik een goede carrière zou hebben.
04:04
and have a good careercarrière, if you work really, really, really hardhard,
73
242010
3018
Als je dus heel, heel, heel hard werkt,
04:07
you'llje zult have a great careercarrière. Doesn't that, like,
74
245028
2020
moet je wel een fantastische carrière krijgen.
04:09
mathematicallywiskundig make sensezin?"
75
247048
1962
Dat klinkt logisch, toch?
04:11
HmmHmm. Not. (LaughterGelach)
76
249010
1050
Hmm. Nee. (Gelach)
04:12
But you've managedbeheerd to talk yourselfjezelf into that.
77
250060
2980
Maar dit heb je jezelf wijsgemaakt.
04:15
You know what? Here'sHier is a little secretgeheim.
78
253040
2001
Weet je wat? Hier is een geheimpje.
04:17
You want to work? You want to work really, really, really hardhard?
79
255041
3014
Wil je werken? Heel, heel, heel hard werken?
04:20
You know what? You'llU zult succeedslagen. The worldwereld- will give you
80
258055
2014
Dan zul je slagen. De wereld zal je de
04:22
the opportunitykans to work really, really, really, really hardhard,
81
260069
4990
mogelijkheid geven om heel hard te werken.
04:27
but are you so sure that that's going to give you
82
265059
4973
Maar ben je zeker dat je er een fantastische
04:32
a great careercarrière when all the evidencebewijsmateriaal is to the contrarytegendeel?
83
